Dog Health Questions: Can I become a Dog Trainer?

A friend of mine is a very talented dog trainer. He wants to go to the UK to further pursue his career. But he doesn't have any formal education on the subject. But he is damn talented...its like he was born to do this. He trained my dog for me and I can tell you he has done one hell of a job.
So can he, with no formal education from a dog training school or no certificate, be able to train people's dogs in the UK and hopefully earn a decent living by it? Or will all pet owners want to see some kind of qualification before they hand their dogs over? Can't he start in a very informal way...like by advertising himself through home-made flyers on bulletin boards?

No, you don't 'need' to have any paper qualification to become a trainer in the UK...he could get employed and be a class trainer or other, but if he wants to be a personal trainer people do like to see bits of paper, even if they don't know what they mean!

  You will find very few people, except people with more money than sense that will hand their dogs over to just anyone. Trainers need to be PROVEN before they can start trying to sell their services - proven championships in obedience. Several of them. Consistent stream of winners for years. NOT just "Oh I trained someone's dog I must be awesome lol". It doesn't work like that.
  
  And I can tell you for one I wouldn't hand ANY dog of mine over to some random person on Craigslist who thinks they can teach a puppy to sit better than I can.


• You don't necessarily 'need' a qualification but it helps, with no certificates it would be best to start off with training friends dogs, friends of friends etc to build a reputation and go from there. I have a qualification and it's been helpful, I mean you can't just walk into a store and ask for a job without a resume. The course was great, I already knew how to train a dog, anyone can do that but it taught me the scientific side of how dogs learn too and how all the senses work and so on, it really opened my eyes as to why some dogs do the things they do. Your friend could get a lot out of doing a course, not only as tool to get business but he could learn a great deal from it.

i rephrased this because some people assumed i was having it out with my father...when in truth i am not.

alright i have a pembroke corgi named Melly

i had her since she was 8 weeks, i took her to handling classes, dog training seminars ect ect parks and visits with my cousins dog club essentially i bring her everywhere i still do.

i walk her twice a day , i feed her water her, bathe her brush her and pay for her vet bills and she sleeps in her own bed beside my own. or rather she did.
she doesnt respond when i call her. my father can be standing right beside me and i will call and nothing he calls and she is running towards him.

she will no longer go to bed in my room and if i put her in my room and lock the door she will howl all night until he gives in and comes and gets her.

she refuses to sit in my lap anymore and instead will struggle to be free from me and rush to him and promptly sprawl out on his stomach.

now when i come home she doesnt greet me instead she remains out by the fence staring at my dads parking spot and begins to cry loudly and jump around when he gets home. ive tried treats but she eats them then runs to him.

my dad is asking to keep her since i will be transferring and we are all worried that she will mourn herself to death.

she refuses to eat until he is home and will just lay their keening ever so often.

would giving her to my dad be a good idea? im thinking so.

my parents had already agreed years ago and changed some things when i graduated and went to college that when i transfer they plan to help me get a dog so i wont be alone when i transfer. he however is giving me some of the money early due to the fact that he wants to keep Mel. im not sure why he is giving it to me early but it makes me feel like he is buying her which is why i said it.

when we go on walks she will even keep looking back at the house unless my dad comes with us

when he doesnt provide her with food and isnt in command how can she see him as pack leader? his own dog doesnt see him as pack leader nor does my mothers the other dogs do not treat him as leader.

i said in the other that it felt like he was buying her from me and i felt guilty about accepting it. why? because i truly cant live without a pet i get very depressed i have been diagnosed with depression and dogs help me cope.

Dog Health Questions: Potty Training your puppy?

How long does it approx. take until a puppy is fully potty trained?

I am doing the ring the bell to go outside method. She understands to ring the bell, but she rings the bell not to go pee, but to play outside, and inside she pees/poops.

When I take her out to see if she has to go, she will either start to bite the leash like crazy, which I try to correct but she could do it for hours because its all a game or she will eat the grass. (literally rip the grass out of the ground.) So it is very difficult to even take her outside.

It becomes very frustrating. She is 10weeks old today, and got her 2 weeks ago. Can anyone give me advice that could help?

A 10 week old puppy is a long way from being fully house trained, so be patient. You've obviously made ringing the bell the precursor to fun and games outside. If she's not paying attention outside, you need to find somewhere less exciting as her potty area. Ignore her when she starts tugging at the leash, and she should soon learn that such behaviour will only get her ignored. A martingale collar will also help you if you give it a quick 'pop' when she misbehaves.

Have you tried crate training? Ringing a bell is only part of house training - it shouldn't be the only method used. An internet search should get you lots of info on crate training, but you can download a good guide her to start: http://www.cratetraining.net

So we put paper down all through the house and she learnt to pee on that and eventually we put down less paper and then put it by the back door and then the garden. so, i have a 2 year old Weimaraner. i show him in AKC and 4H, and at dog shows and other classes, hes a perfect little angel. just since hes turned two, he has been acting a little odd. the other day, we were sitting outside a hair salon, waiting for my grandma to get done. a few people would walk by, and he would bark at them. he is a big dog, and has a scary bark. i know for a FACT he wouldnt bite anyone, but i just know if i was walking and a dog that size started barking at me, i'd be freaked out.. if there anything i can do to make him chill out? If the dog is at level seven you have to go to 8 etc. The sooner you show the dog how you want it to be the easier it will be to "fix".

Some Less Obvious Benefits of Dog Training - Help For Owners of Older Dogs

• You need to get a crate. You get a crate just large enough for him to stand up, turn around and lay down. A dog will not go where he has to sit or lay down in it. You put the dog in the crate when you are not paying attention to him. You put him in the crate overnight if he goes in the house then. Do not leave him in the crate all the time, or even most of the time. A few hrs at a time is enough, but when he is out you have to pay attention to him all the time until he catches on and get house trained. . Keep him in the room with you, you can even attach a lead to him and to your belt loop. Don't let him go off somewhere. When he gets out of the crate take him out. About a half hour after he eats take him out. If he whines or starts sniffing around take him out. Reward him, praise him when he goes outside. Crate training works and is not cruel. Dogs are comfortable in a crate, they are den animals by nature and like their own space. He will probably whine and make a fuss when you first put him in, but when he gets used to it he will be fine. Feed him dog food. When he is hungry enough he will eat it. You can mix some canned food in with the dry, but again when he gets used to it he will get to like it and it is much healthier. You are spoiling the dog, you will wind up with a dog your mom won't let you keep, and he will wind up in a shelter.


• Well, seeing as your dog sometimes pees outside, when he does, shower him with praise. Make sure he understands that its GOOD to pee outside. Pet him, give him a treat etc. But when he pees inside, speak to him in a stern voice and don't give him a treat. He may eventually understand whats right and whats wrong. Try and make a schedule, feed him at a precise time every day, so there will be a rough time every day when he needs to go, so you'll have a bit of an idea when to let him out. If that still doesn't work, try this. When he pees/poops inside, there will probably be a main spot where he does it, when you figure out where this spot is, lay out some newspaper in the area. Then he should eventually get used to using the newspaper, which saves a lot of cleaning up.


• Oh dear, please dont say Pugshire. It sounds so stupid. Just say what it actually is.AT LEAST TWICE A DAY? Thats not enough. Damn it hes a puppy! Take him out EVERY HOUR. until he has understood where to go. Dont take him indoors if he doesnt pee. Take him to a post and wait. Wait until he DOES pee. Then we he has gone praise him excitedly and give a small treat.
  
  STOP FRIGHTENING HIM TOO. You dont shover their noses in their mess. WTF.
  
  Would you shover your childs face in their wee if they wet the bed?! NO! you wouldnt. It makes no sense to the dog, no wonder it is cowering it is frightened of you.
  
  YOUR DOG is pooping and peeing in secret places out of your sight because it is frightened because it knows what you will do. but hey, he had no choice as he was BURSTING and youre not letting ihm out enough.DONT GIVE YOUR DOG MILK.
  
  Put his food down morning and night.
  
  I have Pugs but i divide their daily amount of food into three small meals.
  
  9am (left down for 15 minutes)
  2pm (left down for 15 minutes)
  7pm Very small meal (left down for 15 minutes)
  
  If the dog doesnt touch its food in those 15 minutes, fine, pick it up. They can wait til their next meal. Stop creating a fussy dog.

i have 2 minautre schauzers that are in desperate need of help. We ve tried everything from the adive from the dog whisper( cesar millan) to all the tricks in the book. We found out about bark busters and called and it will cost around 700 dollars for the two of them and its a lifetime waranty so if the problems reappear they come back no charge. Dog Health Questions: I need specific dog training help!?

I have 2male dogs: (A) 1 year and (B) 8 month old, I need help training them (my house doesnt show consistent obidence) I think ive established dominace (with lots of love and atention) they follow me everywhere, (A) has a playful jumping nibling habit, but his frist reaction is always a lite bit i worry he might become agressive one day, he also barks constantly when we ignor, say no or put him outside, he has also become slightly agressive jeulos with (B) when it comes to my affection. Your household has to be consistent with the training you are doing with the dogs - even your brothers and your dad.

With dog A - do not allow the jumping or nipping even if it is playful. You have to establish what is acceptable and what is not - not gray areas. When dog A is getting a little too rough during play and starts to nip - The best thing to do is yell OUCH!!! in a high pitched voice, immediately get up and walk out of the room, giving dog A no attention. 30-60 seconds later, go back into the room and resume in play, but if this happens again - yelp and walk out.

Jumping? Turn your back to the dog and fold your arms - ignore your dog until they are sitting or all four paws are on the floor. Do not give him any attention until the jumping stops. Remember dogs jump for a number of reasons - play, attention, greeting, because you allow it.

When your dog is sitting nicely (instead of jumping) giving the reward of your praise and belly rubs.

Dog B - is just a puppy and is trying to find his place in the household. As for the trash digging - when you catch him in the trash - use a short, sharp noise "EH EH EH!" make it loud. It will instantly get his attention and time for you to redirect him. Put the lid on the trash or put it out of reach of dog B. After using the "EH EH EH" reward your dog for coming to you - treat him.

I would reccommend training classes - they provide good dog to dog socialization with unfamiliar dogs, not just everyday dog A. It is fun and will give your dogs something to focus on. Dog Health Questions: Brutal dog training......................…

i would just like to share what i witnessed last night. there is this man who was teaching his dog to jump in a very brutal way. he is literally torturing the dog! he was whipping the dog like there's no tomorrow, choking it to death, and shooting with pellet gun! my heart was like being broken into pieces. i couldn't stand what he's doing. the dog was crying out loud! why does he have to do that?! and what bothers me is the fact that he was only teaching the dog to jump meaning there's more to come when he starts teaching other things. :'(

Dog Health Questions: Koheler method of dog training?

I am going to start koehler training my basset/beagle mix tonight. Any pointers/tips? He is 1.5 years old, and cannot focus when I have treats, but only performs when I do. I need a reliable dog. When we are done with koehler will he be able to pass a cgc test? What about doing rally? I know he is a mutt but I am going to sign him up for the akc thing where he can do agility/rally/obedience. He screams in his kennel, any suggestions to calm him down? Should I ignore him and wait it out? Thanks.

Hi..I answered your last question about e collars. Thank you for posting this question..I had not heard about this method and googled them to find out what it was all about. One of the reasons I like YA is that it gives me the opportunity to learn as well as share what I can.
I too have a Basset mix...the nose is definitely something we have to overcome. I did a lot of research before I chose my trainer..the one I chose is familiar with and uses different methods. I have not heard the name Koehler, but I have seen them leash train some dogs and it appears to be very similar. Is this a method you do yourself at home? Or do you get some guidance from a trainer of this method, or a book or cd?
This might be a good method for your dog. Just want to say as in ANY training...it all comes down to timing and consistency. If you begin working with someone who can help you perfect your timing and then you practice, practice, you should get good results.
Again, do you do this alone or in a group? Having other dogs around as distraction will help prove your dog and will surely benefit him in order to pass his cgc. My dog was able to pass after 3 group sessions. The test is not for perfect obedience but more for perfect demeanor. And when taking the test,and you heel your dog near another dog...that other dog is selected to be neutral.
See how the training goes first before you sign up for rally obedience, but agility is fun and sure to get him tired from the extra exercise. If you see he does well with this training method, by all means, join rally....we don't do akc, but we do rally events for fun...we both enjoy it! Being part Basset, his best rally is "under". (haha)
There are a number of things you can do to keep him crate happy, but why is he doing this? Is he throwing a doggie temper tantrum? Is he having separation anxiety? If you ignore him and wait it out , how long does it take? If this remains a problem, I would start back at square one... make sure he is WELL exercised before being crated. Take your time and relax while inviting him to enter. Stay with him and treat him and let him out. Do it again, spend less time with him and leave the room for increasing amounts of time. Leave him a special treat...a kong with frozen peanut butter or something that will take him a long time to worry at...this way he will be interacting with a treat and not focused on your leaving. And use his nose!! Spray the bedding in the crate with lavender or vanilla.

  No one method of training is right for all dogs. Kholer may be good for some dogs, but I could tell you, I would get no where fast with those methods.
  
  Oh and I own and train dachshunds. I have trained with a combination of clicker, treats, ball and tug and the occasional fair correction. My adult dachshund is currently training towards his AKC UD, he's got his AKC AX agiilty title and equivielent in other venues and he's got his RE.

Dog Health Questions: Dog training social problems?

I know the title dosen't make much sense...

I have a dog, Scooby, he's a Blue Heeler and German Shepard mix, and I want him to go through training at the local PetsMart. They have a really good trainer that works there, she's really nice. But she can also be very dominant when training dogs.

But more of my dog's past... my Dad and I found them when coming home on the highway, in the middle of NOWHERE, in a Louisiana swamp. There were six puppies, two pairs of each were different. Two looked like blue heeler, two looked like german shepards, and the other two looked like rat terrier mixes. (Female dogs can get pregnant at the same time with different dogs.) And we saved them, nursed them back to health, they had worms, got rid of them, took them all to the vet, got shots, de-wormed, neutered and spayed, and we managed to give two away to good homes. I kept one of them myself, and he was the blue heeler/german shepard.
Anyways, we live wayyy out in the country so they've got a lot of room to play in, even though it's fenced. A couple of acres of fenced land. And the only socializing any of them get it with each other or when going to the vet. They're ten months old now, so they're pretty much full grown. And they don't socialize well at all. Especially Scooby. When people come over he will NOT go near them, won't sniff them, etc. And if I kinda nudge him over to them he'll force himself back as much as I allow and start growling. He's NEVER bitten anyone, never tried to. I think the growling is just a warning.
But I take him for walks down the road and he loves it, until the vet that lives down the road jogs past him. Or the kids playing ball talk sweet to him. He also has a bad habit of peeing on himself when he gets scared, so I haven't tried to get him to be more social, therefore I won't have to get peed on when he gets nervous.

I'm sorry for telling you his whole life story -_- I must be bored, lol. But I was just wondering if I all of a sudden enroll him in training at PetsMart, will it make his behavior worse? Should I slowly introduce him to people? How? Will he stay this way the rest of his life because it's all he knows now?

I wouldn't just thrust him into training without socializing him first. Take him in the car for rides to public park, let him see people without being too close to them and then get him out of the car after a few trips and walk him around. When he acts nervous or barks, just keep walking, drag him along pretend he isn't barking or nervous. If you give into that type of behavior, they get worse and worse. Just keep walking like there is nothing wrong and nothing to be afraid of. But don't leave any slack in the leash/get close enough to people so he can bight them. And have some treats to distract him when he starts crying or barking. I like to watch Cesar Milano the dog whisperer. It has really helped with my dogs, they barked and lunged at people/cars/bicycles... my yorkie also would pee on himself when he was nervous. It would upset me a lot and I felt so bad for him, then when I took him to the groomers one day, she said he was a totally different dog when I left and didn't bark or growl at all. Then I realized what an enabler I really was!! lol Good luck!

• German Shepherds and ACD, are not supposed to be indiscriminately friendly, one of myGSD would not go to people for petting but if put on a Stand/Stay would be fine while examined even by the vet or at dog shows. Pushing him to people will guarantee he'll hate people more and someone will get bitten. A proper obed class should be fine but most PetsMart suck and an outside one would be much better.In class the dogs are NOT encouraged to socialize, the point is to be obedient when faced with many temptations or distractions. Invite a person over who he is most interested in or fears the least and you both sit on the porch talking and have the person not look at Scooby but toss yummy treats at him.As he gets more comfy with that person you use a diff one. Then when he goes near the person the person can tell him sit then toss the treat. If the vet scares him ask him to not run past Scooby but walk casually and throw food his way. While walking past kids keep him away from them but feed him yummy treats only when the kids are in sight. If he is ball crazy have the person toss a ball to him, underhanded and casually. Basically you want him to see "people near me=FOOD or my BALL". But an aloof dog is an aloof dog and pushing him will get someone bitten or give him a nervous breakdown. You can expect him to hold a stand/stay while someone examines him however, that is a command and not his choice and he will learn the diff. We had a severely shy GSD who would never approach anyone but the family and worked at class for a yr b4 he held the Stand/stay well enough to be shown and get his AKC CD. Also doing an obed routine while going past the kids will focus him on you not them. A well trained dog can not focus on his obed routine and praise and do well and be worried of kids at the same time. ACD standard The Cattle Dog's loyalty and protective instincts make it a self-appointed guardian to the Stockman, his herd and his property. Whilst naturally suspicious of strangers, must be amenable to handling, particularly in the Show ring. Any feature of temperament or structure foreign to a working dog must be regarded as a serious fault.

• I don't really like Petsmart training classes myself. There are plenty of horror stories out there, since I don't believe there are a lot of requirements for a trainer to meet, so they can be quite ignorant. Someone on another website had a trainer try to drag her dog across the little training area, because he was afraid. She left.
  
  Now, you can get a good trainer, that knows their stuff and isn't abuse, but, for me, it is too big of a gamble so I just stick with going to training clubs/classes where I *know* what methods the trainer uses.


• I'd recommend you observe a few classes and see what you think of the trainer and how she or he works with animals and people. If you like what you see, ask how long they have been a trainer and what they did to become one. I've seen a PetSmart trainer that was stellar. I saw another one who seemed to be learning herself as she was teaching the classes. She was trained within PetSmart and I would not have gone to her or recommended her. Pet smart trainers are certainly given the opportunity to become amazing trainers...some do and some dont. Many pet smarts offer 1 or more trainers so if I were you I would learn the about the individual trainers and meet with them...learn their credentials, their background, ask them why they are there (the answer needs to be about passion for dogs/training not "uh...i was offered the job and we get commission" or anything similar), get references for them.
  
  Pet smart training can be great its cheap, it is effective. they send their students away for weeks to training with a highly credited professional trainer. some pet smart trainers have even furthered their studies with other opportunities for training schools.
  
  so keep that in mind no matter where you go....its about the individual trainer and how they match with you and your dog, and how much they give a care.
  
  i was a trainer and i had students that loved me and had great results...but remember to meet your trainer. i private trained one couple...and i had never received a complaint and we were laughing and having a good time with their dog...and they came back and told the head that i was too goofy and a jokester and that i was rude to them often. which was out of left field...and the head just laughed and rolled her eyes...because i had always gotten good reviews. and the main point is...that couple should have said something before wasting 8 weeks of class with me! lol so have a trainer whom you have good communication with too.
  
  i think pet smart gets a bad rep cause its easier to get a job there and they pay retail so some trainers are just there because it was a last resort and they dont really care...i think that will be obvious when you meet those guys...and the people who get trainers like that are the ones that generally just signed up without researching. then they turn around and complain about petsmart!

As far as the out of control one, my dog has never been out of control but i would say either try to get him in control and that goes along with training or some people bring there dog to obedience classes. If your dog is sick you usually know, either they throw up, they have a loose stool, and you know your dog best so sometimes if they act funny like not themselves that could be a sign. But i knew this little kid who got his first puppy and it seemed a little skinny but depending on the dog sometimes they look that way. but he was always playing and seemed fine until they brought him to the vet and he had liver failer and ended up dying from it. So not all the time people are able to tell with signs if its something internal unless the dog is in a lot of pain.
