Dog Health Questions: Dog training?

I have 2 dogs, and I also train my friends 3 dogs. Her dogs are my dog's puppies.(Labradors). Their mother comes and stays around just fine outside. but they don't. neither does my other dog. The training methods I used for my Lab work wonders for the other 4 but not this. I just can't seem to get them to stay around. Stay means Stay, and come means come.
Not when you're done sniffing whatever you're sniffing, not later, but NOW.

You need to make sure that it is NEVER okay for them not to listen to these commands-this means first working with them on a long leash. Take it back to step one and make sure they know what each command means. Once that is done, you can start working with distractions. When you say come, and they don't listen, you reel them into you using the long leash-don't ever let them get away with not listening. This is very important-once they learn that they only have to listen "sometimes" then they WILL only listen sometimes.
When they DO listen, give them tons and tons and tons of praise-it's the best thing in the world when you listen to commands!

Also, if you don't think they are going to listen, and you don't have a way to correct them so they DO listen-do not give the command. Again, they cannot get away with it, and giving the command while you know they won't listen will only reassure them that sometimes it is okay to not listen.

Dog Health Questions: Hand signal for stay and high five are the same - dog training?

i'm training my 7 month old puppy. shes doing really well except gets confused when i tell her to stay or give me a high five because the hand signal looks the same.
how do i change this to make them look different? i don't want to confuse her any more.

p.s.- i dont want to put my hand up close to her face when i tell her to stay because that wouldn't be realistic if i'm out somewhere or need to tell her to stay in a hurry, without running up to her to put my hand in her face. i want to be able to tell her to stay from across the room. and she's picked up well with the stop sign hand signal, its just that i use that also when i ask her for a high five.

This is understandable and even I stumbled upon this conflict while training my dog.

The "stay" command is fine. Putting your hand up and shouting stay is great.

Now for "high-five" - I have a solution. I called my "high-five" - "Paw". I put my hand lower than the dog's head with my palm facing up wards and said "paw". Training the dog into responding to paw is just as effective. Paw and high five are basically the same thing. Once the dog has adapted to "paw" with your hand below the head and palm upwards - when you say paw in the future, your dog would be able to touch your hand no matter what position it is in.

There shouldn't be problems with paw and stay being a like at this time because not only are the words different and the hand jester different but, you have to be closer for a paw or as you like to call it "high-five".

• Just change one of the commands. Start by using the new hand sign in conjunction with the verbal command. She'll realize on her own that this sign means to do that command. For the command that stays the same, only reward her if she does the action you want. It's pretty easy to recondition puppies to new commands provided you're upbeat about the training and offer incentive (treat, praise, play, etc...). For future commands, try to make sure the hand sign isn't too similar before you start training it. There's no set hand sign for any command. There are commonly used ones but you don't have to use those. My dogs all respond to hand signs and none are the traditional ones. I chose my own because that was easier for me. As long as they are being trained, it really doesn't matter what the sign/command is. All that matters is that your dog understands what you want and does it.

Dog Health Questions: Professional Dog training advice only please. What to expect from 1st dog when a new dog arrives?

1st Siberian Husky is 6 yrs old. He's been the only dog for 4 yrs. He's always been great at letting other dogs come over for play dates and sleepovers. Just got a 1 yr old Siberian Husky for his companion. Both males are fixed and are trying to establish dominance. I'd like the oldest to be dominate but I don't think I can control that. Both seem to be alpha personalities. They got along fine at the dog park all summer so the owners gave him to me. Any professional advice? Should I have gotten a female? I know I have to give it more time but will it take lots of time? They don't fight but they are tearing up my backyard with digging and wrestling. Also I separate them at feeding time but one won't let the other eat and when I try to bring the youngest inside to feed the oldest is jealous and acts very stubborn i.e. won't obey commands and acts like he feels he's not loved anymore. I try to show more attention to the oldest to let him know this is still his territory but I don't think I'm not doing things properly. They are playing me by vying for my affection and it's working. Letting two male dogs `sort it out` is frankly the worst advice I have read here on this forum in some time. Unless bloody fights than can leave one dog seriously hurt or even dead, is okey pokey with some people no person in their right mind would let two dogs continue to brawl.

Now - reality. The young male is working to establish himself as the alpha. You cannot change that. Its a matter of time before they knock heads. How badly, and how often will depend on whether the other dog submits - or fights back.

Do you have any reason to believe your old dog will just give in....and do you really want to wait to find out....and either way WHY would you allow it. YOU ARE EITHER THE LEADER - OR YOU ARE NOT.

For the record, they are not `Play fighting`` - they are ``practicing`` for more serious stuff.

You must take charge. You are smarter than dog.

When you say things like: ``but one won't let the other eat `` that is a sign you are not in control.

it tells me you are not taking charge - rather you are attempting to inflitrate the pack and negotiate a treaty.

Dogs dont think that way. They dont feel ``unloved`` - what your dog is doing is an act of possesion - ie his insecurities are being tapped into. He was an only dog all his life - now there are two.

You cannot play favourites, or try to ``convince`` the young dog the old dog is king.

You are in charge - they are not. They must accept each others presence - period.

Things you should do:
- if one dog intimindates the other eating, put each dog on lead, in different corners of the room. If necessary, feed one (or both) in crates.

Don`t tolerate growling and dont allow one dog to stare down another...if a dogs tail is up over his back, he is thinking bad thoughts. You dont wait for that to escalate into a brawl - you stop it in its tracks.

How: redirect the dogs aggression using obedience. In order to do this, the dog needs a prong colkar and a leash on. You cannot make an impression on a dog with a flat collar and if both dogs have no collar and no leash - you are frankly quite useless to do anything.

the bottom line: Yes, I would have gotten a female.

But, you can straighten it out by: taking each dog out by himself on lead, developing some obedience, re-establishing yourself as the leader.

In the meantime, keep them separated and if the yard is a bomb zone, it will only get worse.

BTW once the one male is permitted to defeat the other, he will target him whenever he wants (again, if he is permitted). Letting two males brawl is building a bomb - and trust me when I say you don`t want that to happen.

Keep the dogs off your bed, crate at least one dog at night (so that they dont get into it in the middle of the night) and treat them as ``equals`. Both are given affection, both are off the bed, both are fed at the same time.

When you walk out the door- the dog goes last. These are ways of communicating to your dog in `dog language`that you are in charge.

You need a professional trainer to guide you because forums cannot provide the level of support you require.

Also, try to wear clothing that smells like your pets (hold them and pet them before you leave to get the new dog). This will accomplish two things: One, you get bonding time with your new pet without the scrutiny of your other pets, and Two, the new dog will smell the other pets on your clothes and have an idea of what he is in store for. • First don't worry about who the boss is as they'll work that out among themselves. Sounds like they're getting along pretty good anyway so it's most likely already worked out. Your older dog now has a friend so your yard will suffer a bit from two adult dogs playing and wrestling. For feeding train both dogs to sit for their food. Feed in separate bowls and on a schedule. Do not allow bowl switching or other obnoxious behavior. Train both dogs. The young one needs training and the older dog needs to be reinforced in his training. Right now both are kind of testing the situation to see what they can get away with since the living environment has changed for both of them.

Dog Health Questions: I'm so frustrated.....dog training......need advice?

Okay I have two dogs. First of all.....They are perfect when we aren't at home, they are perfect in public, but at home when we take them outside they are awful. Inside they are fine.

We have done everything by the book.

Training and training classes. We put them through training so we wouldn't have this problem.We work with them every day.....we exercise them. But they are slipping and its things that have been out of our control that cause it.

And I'm scared. Now whenever they see a kid or another dog or just some man or woman in the breezeway they start barking at them like crazy. They are becoming extremely territorial and they can't be we live in an apartment.

I'm overwhelmed and I've done tons of research on how to fix this but the more I try its seems the faster they slip.

I mean I put them in classes to prevent this not for this behavior to become worse.

It all started when we moved to this apartment complex....we used to be upstairs now we are on the first floor.....there are lots of bratty kids who yell and shriek and throw things......they are nervous wrecks and I am too.I know they need a behaviorist but we don't have the money for that.....our one dog is sick and most of our extra money is going to vet bills..... We just can't afford a behaviorist.What can I do? I'm running out of ideas.

You need to re-assert yourself as the pack leader. Pre-empt the triggers for the unwanted behaviour and correct it with noise/touch/distraction (whichever used to work best for you) before they are allowed to carry it through.

Example, if you are walking with them and you see a man coming, you know they are going to bark so get there first. Put yourself between the passer-by and the dog on the inside, keep walking withou hesitation and correct any lunge or bark just before it happens with short quick tug on lead at the same time as saying "ah ah" firmly. When they pay attention to you, give lots of light voiced praise and maybe a chunk of ham/chicken etc.

Dogs will sense your discomfort and tension, maybe try to project an assertive, in control kind of energy to them instead of all the fear your feeling.

Like anything you want to be good at, face the fear and just practice practice practice. The more you do it the quicker they'll learn from it.

• I was actually having the same problem with my dog when we were living in an apartment. She wouldn't go crazy at people though--just dogs. (And there were a lot of dogs).
  
  You said you've already done a lot of research so I don't know if there is much more that you can do. I would look again at the book the Divine Canine because there are some good ideas in there.
  
  Also, if you can, be patient. I've heard that sometimes dogs are just being bad at a sort of adolescent phase. Keep up with the training you've already been doing. Be consistent. And try to stay calm when you are outside with them (***easier said than done I know!!***).
  
  Another good thing to do might be to take them out--but away from your house someone more neutral--and work on training outside. Practicing all of their commands like sit, stay, down, heal (if they know it). That way that start learning that they need to pay attention even outside. Then try doing that outside of your apartment when nobody is outside. (Maybe really early in the morning when people aren't up yet). Practice again, and again. Try to reclaim the space as a training space.
  
  You might also think about using some sort of lead where you have more control...and maybe taking them out one at a time? That might give you the opportunity to see which dog is the instigator!

  It seems like you need to work with them one on one, at first, to get used to the noise. Maybe bring one of the dogs outside to be walked, while you work on the territorial issues. Working with two dogs at the same time can be hard.
  
  When the dogs bark at seeing people, you should make a loud noise that distracts them. Or, you can get a whistle, or a horn that makes a noise that distracts them. When they get distracted, move them away and give them a treat. This is going to take a while. Do this with the dogs one at a time.
  
  What types of toys do you have in your apartment for the dogs? It is possible that they are bored too!! make sure that you have plenty of chewy toys, like Nylabone, and put some dog treats in a kong. It keeps my dog busy for hours.

Okay I posted a question I think about a week ago about send my dog to a 3 week training program ($285.00) where I take my dog drop him off (I cant see him for the first 2 weeks) then go back and train with him on the Wednesday and then again on saturday and bring him home if he responds to me like he did the trainers.

I don't know of a web page. But if u go to a bookstore like Barnes n' Nobles there are at least 30 different types of training books. Some for general training and some for specific breed training. I would go look there and browse there selection, write down the title of the best book that fits your needs, and go rent it from a library if money is an issue.
I did this for my dog and the books really helped. I don't know what your needs are otherwise I'd give you those book titles.

Also, you may need to sign up for training if you dog is too defiant or doesn't respond well to training. Like kids, training is individualized and sometimes needs to be altered for your dogs specific needs so no book or web page is going to be able to tell you everything you need to know. Often trainers have delt with a dog with needs more specific to your dog. Or maybe you can figure out the best training techniques for your dog.

Almost all training encourages positive reinforcement instead of negative. If you dog does something good give them a treat. If your dog does something bad (such as using the bathroom in the house) than you are allowed to punish your dog (putting it in the cage, no hitting and don't use your dogs name in a negative tone) but you're only allowed to punish your dog if you catch him/her in the act. They don't understand "after the fact" scenarios and don't learn why you are punishing them even if it makes you feel better.

• Personally, I would recommend paying for obedience classes. I take my golden to them for an hour a week at £7 each. They're a great way to socialize your dog, while training. "Dog training college"? I've never heard of such a thing! What is the exact degree you've earned? (just curious)

The trainers that I have known have all learned through training and competing with their own dogs and through hands-on mentoring by established trainers. They began their training schools after laying the ground work as instructors for local companion/performance training clubs that they were members of and then beginning their own business as demand increased for their classes. When hiring trainers for a 4-H dog project, or even seeking out private trainers, I've always gone by word-of-mouth recommendations. I've never hired or participated in classes led by anyone with a "degree" in dog training, most also had a different job at least part-time to help pay the bills.

The first place that I would start would be looking into teaching a community education dog training class in your area, if you are good, people will tell their friends and they will begin to find you by word-of-mouth. Offer more advanced classes in rented, shared space until you have enough clients to support owning/leasing a facility of your own. Make sure to stay active in the dog world! It's all about word of mouth! If you get your foot in the door through local 4-H dog projects by becoming a judge or trainer it will also broaden your references and renown. Keep active in a local dog club that trains for your sport and keep putting titles on your own dogs as well, those you rub shoulders with may be your clients and will recommend others to you.

I trained my basset hound with out a real tentative schedule but my pit bull needs more structured training, he does not have behavioral issues, and is generally a good dog, his issues include, jumping not sitting when told, barking out side, and so one. Dog Health Questions: Dog training?

i am planning on getting a dog soon. this will not be my first dog, but it will be my dog that requires training. any adive on how to house break and any other training would be really helpful. thanks.

The individual who thinks it is a good idea to shove a dogs nose in his waste is WRONG. Although this may work over time it is NOT the most effective way to house train a dog. Also, terriers are not going to take longer to train. That is a general assumption that is in no way true!

I have 4 mastiffs and 2 terriers. I am also an active dog trainer. I have worked with several breeds of dogs that all train on different levels. As it may be assumed that bully breeds are harder to train, its just not true. All dogs have brains and need training to their specific situations. It is that simple.

Quick thought on house training:
Dogs that are not house broken should not be on teir own in the home. They should not roam free and that is the owners responsibility. Your dog should be a general down stay position where he or she cant use the bathroom. Tell me the last time you saw a dog laying down use the bathroom. Learn their/ create their outside bathroom schedule. Know the basic times and when that time is approaching you make sure you have that dog at your side! Positive reinforcement is a great thing after they handle their business outside. A simple bathroom command should be enforced(hurry up), after they make you praise and return to the home.
NEVER PUT THEIR FACE IN IT AND SCREAM AT THEM!

Training A Dog - Fundamental Dog Training - How-To

• Patience, patience...Defiantly crate train your dog. Make sure you let your dog out as soon as it comes out of the crate or after he/she has eaten or after an accident in the house. If the dog starts sniffing a lot, it's time to go out. In the first stages of house training, only let your dog go out to use the bathroom and not outside to play. As soon as the dog goes to the bathroom, bring him/her in. This will make the puppy learn why it has to go outside. When you go in or out of the door, you always go first(it's about the alpha dog/pack leader), whoever goes through first is the more dominant one, make sure it's you and not the puppy. To get you dog to sit, have a treat in your hand and drag your hand(with the treat in your fist) over the dogs head, the dogs natural reaction would be to sit. To get your dog to lay down, have a treat in your hand and make a fist, have your dog sit, drag your hand in front of the dog down to the floor, the dog should lay down. Then give it the treat. Dogs work off treats and praise and they aim to please their owner. Best of luck to you ! :o)


• The seriously best thing to do to house train a dog is the thing that not everyone likes to do. When he pees or poos on the floor put his nose in it and tell him no over and over and when he goes where he's supposed to go reward him with a treat and play with him. Like Pavlov's dog he will soon learn that pooing where he's supposed will earn him a treat and he'll do it all the time!
  
  If he's very small and you want to litter train him when he goes on the floor put his droppings in the litter box and clean the floor thoroughly. He will follow the smell and learn on his own. I
  
  It's also good to buy puppy training pads if you're yard training them. They smell like grass to them, and when they go on them if you reward them they will learn to go to the bathroom where it smells like grass...that's how I trained my dog. Move the pads closer to the door as you go and it will work best.If you are getting a terrier, just so you know, it will take a lot longer to potty train them. For whatever reason they just don't learn as quickly how to potty where there supposed to.


• All dogs need training in order to live in a human world! Many pet owners know how to train, but if you do not understand dog behavior and do not know where to start, sign up for a training class. House training will be covered in the class as well as dog behavior and how to deal with misbehaviors. Obedience and manners will be covered too.


• For potty training, if the dog goes poo or pee in the house, then don't yell at the dog or spank the dog. That only teaches the dog not to get caught.
