Dog Health Questions: How do you stop a dog barking all the time?

Hi,

My dog won't stop barking at cars, bikes..everything really. It's becoming a bit of a nuisance for us and our neighbours.

Can anyone recommend a good dog training manual, guide or offer some suggestions themselves.

It sounds as if your dog is bored.

The citronella anti bark collars work for a short while until the dog figures out that when he barks he just moves his head away from the spray. As far as I know the electric shock ones are banned here in Australia.

Before you hand out all that precious money on training go to your local pet store and find him/her some toys to play with. There is something called a Kong where you put food inside of this toy and it takes them hours to get what's inside out.

The Importance of Dog Training

• As a positive reinforcment trainer I would highly recommend the book "dont shoot the dog" or "dont shoot the dolphin" by Karen Pryor. Its a great book and fabulous resource. In addition to this you may want to keep in mind...if you arn't training your dog your dog is training you! The key is being attentive to your dog, it is time consuming but it pays off. When you see a possible temptation arising i.e: car, cat, etc. etc. (if your dog knows basic commands) tell them to sit, have them give eye contact (if they don't know this it is simple.....show them the treat bring it towards your face and practice having them give eye contact and reinforce with a treat) and praise them for the eye contact. Basically keeping them focused on something more productive....remember dogs are ALWAYS thinking "whats in it for me". You may also want to try (although they are not the best) PetSmart or Petco your best bet is looking for a Positive Reinforcment trainer in your area try going to WWW.APDT.COM to search for a good trainer they are a fabulous resource for very good trainers. • bark collar, shock kind not the citronella as they learn to move their head to not get sprayed. The shock is not severe just enough to get their attention, make it go off and hold it, i've done it, it doenst hurt just startles you. Then once you have that on work on training, distractions so he doesnt pay attention to those things he barks at, then he wont need the bark collar.


• if it is a young dog he is just getting use to his area . try leaving a radio on to get him use to noise and when he is guite reward him , he should get over it guite soon ,


• I don't know but I do know that I ahve had no sleep becaus eof the neighbours dog. At 4am I considered shooting the dog, throwing a brick at it etc etc. Its nice to know that some people actually care about the bother that their dog can cause, so although I do not know, GOOD LUCK


• What we do is we give depressants, like cough/cold medicines. This will solve the barking momentarily and this might give you some time to recover from the barrage of your dog's barking.

• I used to show dogs. At a dog show there are anywhere from 500 to 1000 dogs, if you spend the night you will not hear one sound from them. If you pay good money to visit a campsite the only dog there will bark non stop all night until some irate person grabs him by the throat and tells him, one more sound mutt and it's all over for you. Then the owners will let him into their sleeping bags and he's so happy he shuts up. There is a moral to this.
  There is a reason for the barking, find out what it is. You may have to take him away from whatever is causing the barking.
  Introduce him slowly to speaking on command. You actually ask him to bark and treat him for it. If he barks out of turn you sternly say no, and he gets no treat. He learns there is a time for barking and a time not to. You may have to crate him for everyone's sanity until he learns though.
  I have a dog who is afraid of the dark, he won't shut up unless he has company. Cats will do, he needs something live to keep him calm.
  Find out why he barks. It sounds like he's bored. Play frisbee or ball with him.

  Angelmousesarah - I feel for you...I have the same problem - unfortunately, its my own Border Collie! She only barks at night - I swear, at the leaves moving! I solved it by a soft "muzzle". She's more embarrased than anything, and she doesn't make a peep the rest of the night!


• I have a pom/spitz and he use to bark all of the time it made me crazy and I was talking to someone about the electric collars but did not like that they shock the dog so I was against using them. So I went out and bought a muzzle. You have to allow him to bark sometimes that is his job as a dog. But when you want to train him not to bark do it at certain times like he really does not need to bark at bikes riding by so when a bike rides by tell him not to bark and when he still does it put the muzzle on him and tell him no and make him wear it for about 5 mins and it will not take long for him to stop. I know mine hated the muzzle and he use to bark really bad when friends came into the house and when I walked to the store I have to leave him outside on leash while I am in store and he would bark the whole time so once I started using the muzzle about a week later he stopped. Every now and then he starts again and I have to remind him of when he is not allowed to bark and put it on him for only about 2 mins or sometimes if he just sees it he remembers and stops. Dog Health Questions: Celebrity Dog Trainers?

I know a lot of people here either swear by Ceaser Milian's training methods, while other despise his views on training. I'm not a personal fan, but truthfully haven't watch very many episodes of his show. The TV trainer I watch, and adore, is "It's me or the dog's" trainer, Victoria Stillwell. I have never had an issue with any method employed on her show, and often the advice I give on Y!A comes from something I've seen work on her show. Only owning two dogs, I obviously haven't seen every problem out there, but her firm yet positive-training techniques always make sense to me, unlike Milian's domenience based techniques, and of course on the show, they always appear to be effective. ;) Does anyone else have any views on her techniques? Would you recommend her books or show to new dog owners to gain tips on training? Whose philosophy of dog training do you find more effective, Stillwell's or Milians? And other general impressions...

I agree with you 100%, I love Victoria Stillwell's methods, she's easy to follow and you can apply her methods at home which I do to both our dogs. I even answer questions on here using her proven methods to other Y!A people who are having similar issues. Granted I don't experience a lot of problems with my Weimaraner since I have a very well behaved dog due to spending time and money having her trained and making sure she gets plenty of exercise and constantly working with her.

I like Cesar I think what he does is fantastic but he cannot be followed at home except for making sure you are definately the pack leader so for that he's great.

But I highly recommend Victoria to anyone having issues with their dogs because her methods are easy to follow and work.

Dog Health Questions: How do i make my dog more obedient?

Hello!!!
I just goy a dog for my birthday in August and it is the cutest thing ever its a toy Yorkie and i loved it for like 2 weeks and know it just drives my crazy, I used to let it sleep in my room in like a cute like box thing but it would wake me up at 5:00 in the morning so know it just sleeps outside with my other dog. And very time I open the backyard door it runs inside the house and when you go to pick it up it pee's. It also digs holes, doesn't go to the bathroom in the grass and it barks all night its just crazy. I was thinking about taking it to a dog training class at pets-mart but I don't really know if it works. Please give me advise on how to fix this problem as fast as I can and without to much work involved.

Never let your dog sleep on your bed unless you want him to be spoiled and don't really care.

It is best to leave you dog to sleep in it's own bed locked somewhere in the house such as the laundry room, and if he/she starts barking, don't go see what's wrong because he/she just wants attention and going to see whats wrong with her/him would let him/her think that he/she is the boss and would take advantage on you.

Always let your dog out at about every two hours or one hour. And if you want your dog to be potty trained inside the house, you could by these dog nappy pads that you spread out on the floor, and then whenever it is just about to pee or poo, quickly take your dog to the nappy pad, and keep taking it to the pad until it will go to do its potty on the pad by itself.

If it digs holes in the garden whenever you let it out, make sure your garden is fenced and that the fence is stuck into the ground, so when it digs a massive hole it wont be able to get out.

If it barks whenever you let it out, i know this sounds cruel, but you can always get a shock collar for little dogs so it wouldn't hurt them a lot, but they usually teach them a lesson to not bark for no reason whenever it is let out. Or you could say "no!" but in a very strong, tough voice so it knows that you are serious. If that doesn't work, you can always spank it, but not too hard, just gently, and it is best to do it just above their nose, because dogs don't really like to be tapped or spanked above their nose. Yorkshires are also very well known to yap a lot. LoL That is probably why your one is noisy, my neighbour has a yorkie and sometimes it would be barking for the whole day.

Another option is you can take it to doggy school.

Make sure you don't spoil your dog too much even if it is very tempting to because it will just take advantage on you and would think that they are the alpha and you are the lower member of the pack.

For lay down get your dog to first sit, then with your hand bring it to his/her nose level and then bring it to the ground and say lay down..the idea is they will follow the hand to the ground. It may take a few tries. You can do it with a treat but keep teh treat inside your hand.

Dog Health Questions: Help! what do I do to get this dog trained?

My mom and I just got a toy poodle mix from a lady who was glad to wash her hands of him. We got almost no background info on him, including not knowing what food he had been fed. Needless to say, we are needing to start from square one with this dog!
She told us he was potty trained, but apparently not, since he has been leaving little surprises in the house almost every day.

He seems to only be having "accidents" overnight, since I will wake up and discover a potty spot. I have tried taking him outside before bed, etc, but it still is happening. Should I be getting up earlier?

I think he is almost potty trained, but he never lets us know when he has to go. I just try to keep an eye on him in case he starts sniffing around the house.
My mom and I are considering crate training him, but we have never used this method to potty train before. Do we leave him in there all day?? Or do we only put him in there, say, overnight? And how often should we be letting him out?

• Most dogs will have accidents in a new house, even though they're potty trained.
  Yes, you should crate train him. He should sleep in there at night & the crate should be left open & accessable to him during the day. He will probably go in there on his own for naps.
  I would take him out as many times a day as you can. Take him to the SAME spot every time & say "Go potty!" until he goes.
  Then praise him as though he's done something wonderful. You can even leave the poop there for a day or so (if possible) until he gets the idea that this is the right spot to go.
  And yes - you really can teach a dog to go to the bathroom on command. All of mine do.
  As far as during the day - keep him in an area where you can monitor him at all times. Use baby gates so that he can't go into places where you don't want him.
  At first I would take him out every two hours or so.

• he may be having accidents due to stress (it is stressful to move to a new home, new people, new everything). give him some time to make the adjustment. if you feel a crate would be helpful, see link for tips on how to use one properly. and no, you do not want to leave him in it all day - that is inviting him to eliminate in the crate, which is counter-productive. crating him at night might be an option and trying to get up a little earlier might also help. depending on his age, he should be going out on a schedule: first thing in morning, after each meal, after naps and playtime, last thing at night (these are minimums; small dogs tend to need to go more frequently than bigger dogs). mostly, praise him for doing the right thing and keep supervising so you can help him learn faster. best wishes.

It is a purebred weimaraner if your wondering, the breeder says its a blue weimaraner im not sure what that means cuss all weim puppies have blue eyes and this weim has a metallic shiny coat (which i think looks cool as hell :P)

So this is a 5 week old puppy now? Yes, its early, and done is done, so no yelling at you, but you do need to realize that there are likely to be some issues related to leaving the litter early, especially as far as socialization with other dogs goes. If you can find a good puppy socialization class, you may be able to do that before enrolling in a regular Petsmart class. But do be careful, some of these classes do more harm than good, especially be careful if the puppies look out of control or some puppies are getting picked on (watch a class before you attend one!) Another option would be to find a trainer to come to your home- remember that this pup will hopefully be with you for the next 10 years or more, and this early training is probably the best investment you can make in your puppy's life. Training a 5 week old puppy means training in short sessions, and you might want to consider hand feeding him his meals while training. I have included a link to a wonderful e-book called After you get your puppy by Dr Ian Dunbar (a vet). I do question the ethics of a breeder who lets a pup go to a new home without adequate information at the tender age of 5 weeks, and especially when breeding a non-standard color.

Blue refers to the color of the coat, a beautiful dark blue, instead of the more usual grey. The blue is actually a dominant color, so if even one of the parents has the color, it will be passes on to at least some of the puppies.

Don't worry about fetch for now, spend some time bonding with her and teaching her loose leash walking (I'll post a link to a video below) and when you can't worry about training him to walk nicely, just pick him up and carry him, so he doesn't learn that pulling gets him anywhere. And of course, housebreaking!

  I have no ideas what toys you've offered, but 5 weeks is WAY too young for her (?) to leave her litter. Don't be surprised if you later have behavior problems (too dominant, too fearful) if she was removed before she learned this, with/in her litter. I have no idea what socialization she's gotten, but puppies don't start playing much before this age, period. They are more playful at 6-7 weeks, etc. Could her age be part of the reason she is so "difficult" right now? ~DUH!!!!
  
  The best training video is 'How To Raise a Puppy You Can Live With" by Rutherford & Neil/ Alpine publishing. But their book is cheaper. I'm not so in favor of using food, to correct pulling. How about you STOP moving FORWARD, if she's pulling, Just STOP, or you can even change direction. She will start watching if you change direction. If you are lazy, you can use a no-pull harness.
  
  She wont stop biting the leash and it makes it even harder to walk on a leash. Correct for biting the leash and buy Bitter Apple, & spray the leash wiht it. In all likelihood puppy will taste it, when biting the leash and stop biting.
  
  Classes are a good idea, but the quality varies at Petsmarts. What about dog obedience clubs? As a rule, you can't go to classes until she's had all her shots. Rabies isn't given until 16 weeks. Better start doing what you can at home. You can start teaching the puppy on day ONE. Start by teaching him or her its name. Come is next. That command can save the puppy's life.
  
  It is not safe to take her out of your yard (for walking or exercise) & expose her to germs, until she's had her ALL of her shots. Parvo & Distemper are real, and can kill a puppy. The WCA says the puppy needs a booster for them at 12 weeks. She should have gone to the vet as soon as you got her, for a health exam.
  
  ARE you aware you are referring to this puppy as both a she and a he? Why do you want POLISH names for the puppy? Weims are German breed.
  
  If she's blue (gunmetal in coat color) it means you didn't get her from a reputable breeder. It's a DISQUALIFYING fault. Only backyard breeder & puppy mills sell blues. Check the AKC breed standard. Weims should be silver gray. All Weims are born with blue eyes, but they usually change as they mature, to amber. If she is black, she isn't purebred. Did you see the parents & was one or both of them blue, like the puppy?

• I cannot tell where you live but in most urban areas of the United States it is illegal to have a dog running loose. So, if you live in the US and your dog can run into the street, that's not going to work.

Depending on the dog, most dogs enjoy being close to their "pack" - which means YOU. Moving them outdoors could be very hard on the dog.
