Dog Health Questions: How do you stop a dog barking all the time?

Hi,

My dog won't stop barking at cars, bikes..everything really. It's becoming a bit of a nuisance for us and our neighbours.

Can anyone recommend a good dog training manual, guide or offer some suggestions themselves.

Someone recommended this dog training course by Daniel Stevens;
http://www.trade-secrets.org/stopdogbark…

Has anyone used it and is it any good? I'm always a bit skeptical of all those great testimonials...even with the pictures.

Cheers.

Dog Training DVD, A Great Investment in Your Dog

Recommended Answer:
It sounds as if your dog is bored.

The citronella anti bark collars work for a short while until the dog figures out that when he barks he just moves his head away from the spray. As far as I know the electric shock ones are banned here in Australia.

Before you hand out all that precious money on training go to your local pet store and find him/her some toys to play with. There is something called a Kong where you put food inside of this toy and it takes them hours to get what's inside out.

The Importance of Dog Training

  • As a positive reinforcment trainer I would highly recommend the book "dont shoot the dog" or "dont shoot the dolphin" by Karen Pryor. Its a great book and fabulous resource. In addition to this you may want to keep in mind...if you arn't training your dog your dog is training you! The key is being attentive to your dog, it is time consuming but it pays off. When you see a possible temptation arising i.e: car, cat, etc. etc. (if your dog knows basic commands) tell them to sit, have them give eye contact (if they don't know this it is simple.....show them the treat bring it towards your face and practice having them give eye contact and reinforce with a treat) and praise them for the eye contact. Basically keeping them focused on something more productive....remember dogs are ALWAYS thinking "whats in it for me". You may also want to try (although they are not the best) PetSmart or Petco your best bet is looking for a Positive Reinforcment trainer in your area try going to WWW.APDT.COM to search for a good trainer they are a fabulous resource for very good trainers. Well I hoped this helped feel free to contact me if you want more detailed training advice.

  • bark collar, shock kind not the citronella as they learn to move their head to not get sprayed. The shock is not severe just enough to get their attention, make it go off and hold it, i've done it, it doenst hurt just startles you. Then once you have that on work on training, distractions so he doesnt pay attention to those things he barks at, then he wont need the bark collar.

  • if it is a young dog he is just getting use to his area . try leaving a radio on to get him use to noise and when he is guite reward him , he should get over it guite soon ,

  • I don't know but I do know that I ahve had no sleep becaus eof the neighbours dog. At 4am I considered shooting the dog, throwing a brick at it etc etc. Its nice to know that some people actually care about the bother that their dog can cause, so although I do not know, GOOD LUCK

  • What we do is we give depressants, like cough/cold medicines. This will solve the barking momentarily and this might give you some time to recover from the barrage of your dog's barking.

Also, one suggestion is to put her out more often. This will lessen his/her annoyance/interest to Small things/ anything it sees.

    Good luck!!!

  • Woof ! Woof !
    Why ?
    I'm so happppppy
    Woof ! Woof !

  • Electric-shock collar. Each time it barks it gets a shock. It will figure out the best choice on itself.

  • dont let it to be hangry

  • electric no bark collar

  • If the dog continues to bark, you can always take it to the vet and be de-barked.

  • I used to show dogs. At a dog show there are anywhere from 500 to 1000 dogs, if you spend the night you will not hear one sound from them. If you pay good money to visit a campsite the only dog there will bark non stop all night until some irate person grabs him by the throat and tells him, one more sound mutt and it's all over for you. Then the owners will let him into their sleeping bags and he's so happy he shuts up. There is a moral to this.
There is a reason for the barking, find out what it is. You may have to take him away from whatever is causing the barking.
Introduce him slowly to speaking on command. You actually ask him to bark and treat him for it. If he barks out of turn you sternly say no, and he gets no treat. He learns there is a time for barking and a time not to. You may have to crate him for everyone's sanity until he learns though.
I have a dog who is afraid of the dark, he won't shut up unless he has company. Cats will do, he needs something live to keep him calm.
Find out why he barks. It sounds like he's bored. Play frisbee or ball with him.

  • This is a dominance issue that you need to resolve by becoming the "pack leader". Watch some episodes of Cesar Millan.

Angelmousesarah - I feel for you...I have the same problem - unfortunately, its my own Border Collie! She only barks at night - I swear, at the leaves moving! I solved it by a soft "muzzle". She's more embarrased than anything, and she doesn't make a peep the rest of the night!

  • I have a pom/spitz and he use to bark all of the time it made me crazy and I was talking to someone about the electric collars but did not like that they shock the dog so I was against using them. So I went out and bought a muzzle. You have to allow him to bark sometimes that is his job as a dog. But when you want to train him not to bark do it at certain times like he really does not need to bark at bikes riding by so when a bike rides by tell him not to bark and when he still does it put the muzzle on him and tell him no and make him wear it for about 5 mins and it will not take long for him to stop. I know mine hated the muzzle and he use to bark really bad when friends came into the house and when I walked to the store I have to leave him outside on leash while I am in store and he would bark the whole time so once I started using the muzzle about a week later he stopped. Every now and then he starts again and I have to remind him of when he is not allowed to bark and put it on him for only about 2 mins or sometimes if he just sees it he remembers and stops. Good Luck in training him hope it works for you like it did for me.

They are any were on the back of his ears and they go away after a while.they are skin colour with a small orange dot on top. You can only see them when you separate the fur but if you run your hand over the ear you can feel them. If they are scratched they bleed and the orange tip can be taken of but a new one will appear. We first thought they were grass seeds but they definitely aren't. They keep coming up on his ears and i just want to be sure they are nothing bad. Does any one know what they could be?Also my dog is a male german coolie cross from the rspca he is 3 in october (2 and 5 months) and we have 2 chickens male and female , two rabbits male and female, birds in an avery , koalas kangaroos and foxes often come into our Garden. we live on one acre and he often goes in paddocks with long grass has contact with seed grass and goes to dog training. he also plays with out next door neighbors dog.

Dog Breed in Relation to Dog Training

I think that as long as they aren't hurting him when you touch them and they don't bother him they should be fine. Next time that you take him to the vets mention them to your vet, but they are probably nothing. My dog has a couple of lumps on his skin as well. Good luck!

Here's how I housetrain dogs

ENTIRE WEEKEND- I dedicate the whole weekend to training the dog.
1) 12-24 hour Fast (usually no food after late Thurs night and I begin training Friday afternoon after work- 12 hours for a puppy)- feeding all weekend in the form of rewarding for pottying outdoors.
2) Dog restricted at all times to crate or leash tied to my waist so I don't forget to watch the dog.
3) Bait water- blenderized canned dogfood in water... dog is hungry and drinks a LOT- this gives me tons of opportunities to take dog outside and reward.
4) Pocket full of kibble to reward successful pottying outdoors
5) Praise Praise Praise for successful pottying outside.. its a party!!!
6) Quick trip outside if I see the dog looking like it might be considering peeing
7) Rolled up newspaper to beat MYSELF over the head if I don't watch the dog closely enough

Edit: You can set a timer to remind yourself to take her out every half hour or so.

Dog Health Questions: Dog training???????????

My 9 yo female Standard poodle suffered trauma before we got her. As such, we are having trouble potty training her. Does anyone have some tips or sites or anything???

SitStayFetch: Dog Training To Stop Your Dog's Behavior Problems (Review)

Recommended Answer:
yes take it for long walks at least three time a day, each time it uses the bathroom then tell it good job

Dog Training Tips - Negative Reinforcement Vs. Positive Reinforcement - Which Is More Effective?

  • ...
Key to dog training is that the owner/trainer must gain the dog's confidence. The dog must become submissive to the its leader. She must come to trust you as her leader before she will forget her previous trauma.

If this was my dog, I would take her for long walks, at least 30 minutes, twice daily. When walking her, she would not be allowed to take the lead. I'm the leader, not my dog, so I'm out in front. While out on walks I would give her a few doggy breaks so she can pee, poop, and smell. Walks can establish a very positive relationship between owner and dog.

Also I would teach her simple tricks such as sit, come, no, etc. I would use these 'tricks' to continually reestablish myself at her leader. Every time she does a trick, she is submitting to my authority, which reinforces the idea in her mind I'm her leader. Since the 'tricks' are simple, she will easily succeed and be happy when getting approval by her leader.

Dogs need a human leader when living with humans. A good leader can relieve frustrations which lead to bad behavior such as toileting in inappropriate areas.
    ...

  • Google on Crate training. Dogs will not soil in such a confined space and will wait until they are let out of the crate (rush her outside) to go to the bathroom.

  • Puppy Training Tips: Potty Training

Establishing a routine with your dog is essential to good training. Your routine should include feeding times, bathroom breaks, playtimes, training and timeouts. Having a young pup is just like having a small child when it comes to potty training. Young pups, just like young children have very underdeveloped bladders. A young child does not necessarily know when they need to go to the bathroom until they are doing it. The same thing applies to your young pup. If only it was as easy to control your pups peeing on the floor as it is to control your child's peeing on the floor. Your child generally wears a diaper if they are not potty trained, but putting a diaper on your pup is very impractical and darn near impossible. How long do you think a diaper would actually last on your pup's backside before it is ripped off and shredded? If your pup is anything like mine, about 30 seconds. There is an easy way to know when your pup may need to go to the bathroom. Depending on your pup's water intake, and amount of exercise, this chart can help you keep your floors and carpets protected from your pets bathroom habits. Approximate age to hours your pup is able to hold their bladders starting at 8 weeks of age, (General time your pup will enter your home to begin your lives together.) 8 -12 weeks of age (2 - 3 months of age) = 30 mins 12 - 16 weeks of age (3 - 4 months of age) = 45 mins to 1 hour 16 - 24 weeks of age (4 - 6 months of age) = 11/2 to 3 hours 24 - 36 weeks of age (6 - 9 months of age) = 31/2 to 6 hours 36 + weeks of age (9 months to 1 year+) = 6 to 10 hours These times may vary with your dog. Different breeds mature at different times in their life. A small breed dog matures faster than a large breed dog, so your large breed dog may need more frequent ‘bathroom-breaks'. It is always a good practice to take your pup out every 30mins to 1hour when you are home, even when they are older. Repeatedly letting your dog out will solidify your training efforts. When training your pup to go to the bathroom outside it is good to establish a routine as well as some familiar words to coach your pup into the right behavior. Every time you take your pup outside to go to the bathroom use the same spot as much as possible. The familiar smell of their urine will help them recognize that this is the spot to ‘go'. When you take your pup outside to 'go', say to your pup, "Go pee." or some other similar phrase over and over again until they actually start to go. With using this phrase over and over again the dog comes to realize that this word means to 'go pee' and you will have a dog that will pee almost on command. When they start to 'go' use the phrase again with a 'good dog' added. Give your pup lots of praise when they are done and possibly a treat. Praise is one of the most useful training tools you can use. Dogs respond better to praise than yelling. Just like us, dogs like to be praised for something they do right and strive to achieve praise. With established potty times, using the 'go pee' words and lots of praise your pup will come to understand where it is acceptable to 'go pee' and where it is not. This will make your life a lot easier and your bond between you and your dog will grow stronger. You should never give your pup the full run of the house, even when you are home, and never when your not home. Set up a medium to large crate for your pup in your house. If you don't have a crate, a bathroom or laundry room will do, any place in the house that has easy to clean floors. Place towels or blankets, food and water bowls, a few toys and newspaper or absorbent ‘doggy' pads in your dogs space. This area should be warm and inviting to your dog. Just like us, your dog needs its own area to relax. Giving them this space gives your dog a place to go when things become stressful for them, like when you have company over that may be to loud for them. This will also restrict the area your pup has to make a mess. It is against a dog's nature to urinate or defecate in the same area they sleep in. Give your dog a big enough space so that they can ‘do their business' away from their sleeping area. Some people take their pups out for long walks to tire them out before they leave them home alone. Extra exercise requires extra water intake, which will increase your pups urination and accidents in the home when left alone. If you feel the need to exercise your pup before you go out, do this a good hour and a half to two hours before you plan to leave. Let your pup out a few times before you leave to make sure they have emptied their bladder as much as possible. Remember your pup will have accidents, but with a little time and effort you will have a happy new addition to your family and a clean comfortable home. • Potty training sounds like an indoor cat thing.
My dog will only go on the grass. . take her to the park perhaps.

Then again you could try your local vet for better info than I can give.

  • As a dog training affiliate this program is by far one of the best for solving this type of behavior.

    http://skycforme.dogdogdog.hop.clickbank…

  • you gotta watch the dog whisperer. he teaches those dogs so easily, mostly by just adjusting the collar, routine walks, and acting like the alpha figure in the house

  • First of all I would take her to the vet to rule out any problems she may be having, kidney infection, etc..Next I would invest in a crate, if problem still persists I would contact a reputable trainer.

  • Please go to www.doggiebagonline.com/forum. There are very knowledgable people on this site and a lot of articles that will help you with house training and other issues you may run into as she gets older from the trauma. If you want to, you can email me and I'll see if I can help you based on the type of trauma. I am a moderator and a user of the website I gave you above. The people on the site helped me build confidence in and resolve issues with my 3 year old Shih Tzu mix after I adopted her at a year and a half after never being touched (other than being kicked) for the first 6 months of her life.

  • Definitely invest in a crate. Mine don't use them now, but they are invaluable when potty training.

Mine go out when we get up, after they eat, before we go to work. When we get home, they are let out of their kennel to run around in the yard then come in the house to eat, back out again to potty, then out again before we go to bed.

Dog Health Questions: Is there any free good dog training sites???

also book titles! thank you so much!!

Positive Reinforcement Dog Training

Recommended Answer:
Yep, and in many cases the information is worth every penny of it.

As to book titles ... Go to the library and invest an hour or so glossing over several or many. Then consider these two things:

1: Which appeals to your personal comfort; and
2: Does it address any specific issues of concern to you.

When you find the one that best elicits a "nailed it" on BOTH counts, that's the one to start with. It may not be, however, the right one ... but you will learn that as you go along.

Should you find that you made an incorrect choice (the training as instructed is not effectvely changing your dog's behaviour to suit your needs) don't beat yourself up. It does not mean that you are not doing it right, nor that your dog is not responding ... it just means it ain't working.

Place a call to several local trainers and ask for help. Be sure to describe, best you can, any specific issues of behaviour you need dealt with and then ask yourself:

1: Which trainer appeals to your personal comfort; and
2: Does the trainer have experience addressing specific issues of concern to you.

Now you've found (hopefully) a more experienced pair of hands and eyes to help you with the rough spots.

Dog Health Questions: Protection dog training?

I want to know more about schutzhund trainers, how do you become a trainer. Do they get good business and pay. Is it a fun job to be in.

Beyond Canine Basics - Advanced Dog Training Methods

Recommended Answer:
There are other Schutzhund people around here. I was a certified agitator at one time, but quit because I screwed up my back big time.

Most Schutzhund trainers are folks who have started in other dog venues and then gotten involved in Schutzhund work. In other words they are typically very advanced dog trainers.

Most of this is involved with club work. All of the folks are volunteers, ie. no pay. They do it because they enjoy it.

You shouldn't be viewing Schutzhund work as simply protection work. There are three components to Schutzhund, obedience tracking and protection work. To teach any of the three components you have to prove that you can not only teach your dog how to do the work, but also that you can teach other people how to teach their dogs how to do the work.

Most clubs that I have seen have people apprentice as an agitator for the protection work. For a variety of reasons you really need to know a lot about dog behavior to do this work. You can screw up the dog's training, or you can get hurt, if you do the wrong things.

There are people who do turn this into a business. Again it's something where you have to prove yourself. There are a lot of self-proclaimed experts out there, like anything else.

Dog Training Jobs - How to Become a Professional Dog Trainer

  • You should learn more about Schutzhund- I know people who like it- not lucrative though. Protection is only 1/3 of it, tracking and obedience are the other two parts. Most people I know who do schutzhund have had dogs (mainly gsd's) their whole lives. I find it too hard (not hard as in difficult- hard as in watching my dog get hit with a bat is too much for me) for my personal tastes. There are Schutzhund clubs in almost every major city. I'd start there, go to some field trials, get a feel for it, then start one of your own pups- one that has been volhard tested, and see how far you get....
    Good Luck....

Dog Health Questions: HELP NEED A DECENT dog training school in essex if not some genral tips for a german shepherd?

please give me some advise i need some training tips on a german shepherd

Dog Training School

Recommended Answer:
I agree to an extent with the first answer. Check out different sites, people, etc and get some pointers. Enroll in a training class if you'd like..... however, the most important thing.. i repeat, the MOST IMPORTANT thing is to spend time with your dog!! The bonding between a dog and its handler is the most important thing because it establishes the groundwork for great communication, where you learn the limits of your dog, and how he/she learns best, and your dog gets to know you, and what you are asking of him/her. The more time you spend with your dog, and the more interaction you have, the more eager your dog will be to please you. They are social animals and need the interaction in order to develop mentally and emotionally. Just an example, my mother had a purebred shepard that was so well trained that she would stop at the street and wait for my mom before attempting to cross the street, and my mom never took her to a class. Another good source for any breed is the book "Dog Training for Dummies"~ it's written by people who have trained many many dogs, and they know their stuff!

An Overview Of The 3 Most Common Dog Training Methods

  • I live in Lancs and I called a well-established company called 'Barkbusters' which I found on Yell.com. They do home visits and deal with all kinds of dog behaviour and problems. They charged me £75 for a 3 hour home visit and if you need a return visit they charge £25 an hour. I didn't need another visit and found the price remarkable for the expertise that they provided - I was so pleased with the results. They monitor how you live your daily life to see the dog's behaviour (and yours) in your home environment. The company is based in many locations around the UK and even all over the world and I have also seen it on programs on TV. They deal with all kinds of dogs and I would recommend them to anybody. I hope that this is of use to you (it was invaluable to me). Good luck!!!

  • first of all ,,how old is your dog? what type of tips are you looking for? ...petsmart offers a 8 week course for $99,the classes are between 3-5 dogs. i

  • Check out www.leerburg.com. This guy has raised hundreds of litters of German pups and shows them all over the world. He has literally hundreds of pages of training tips on his site, plus a web board that is frequented by top notch trainers. Good luck!

Dog Health Questions: Is it good when you would us a dog training collar for you to pull back as hard as you could until the dog cry?

just to let you know that my dad would pull back as hard as he could until the dog would cry because the dog would try to run and my dad was told that you should pull back the training collar until the dog yelps.

Free Dog Training Tips - Train Your Dog

Recommended Answer:
Wow.....poor dog. The dog is pitching his weight against the collar, turning it into a tug of war between your father & the dog. Not good as yanking ineffectually on a dog's neck teaches it nothing & may cause long term physical damage.

Any piece of of training has to be used correctly & is only as effective as the handlers ability to use it. Suggest to your father that he either works with a decent trainer on a one to one basis or sign up for obedience classes.

Be a Responsible Dog Owner and Consider Using a Dog Training Collar!

  • No, this isn't going to help and you risk injuring the dog. Instead try using a no-pull harness, available at Petsmart and Petco. These hook the leashes onto the front instead of the back. The purpose is so that when the dog lunges forward or tries to run all the owner has to do is stop walking and the placement of the leash will actually cause the dog to turn slightly to the left or the right. This eventually discourages them from pulling as they are no longer able to do so. I have used it with my dog who was a nightmare to walk and now our leash is totally slack while walking because he's not pulling.

    http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2751027

  • What kind of collar is your dad using? If it's a buckle collar - then he can cause severe damage to the dog's trachea - even potentially causing it to collapse.

There are other training methods and safer collars to use - have your dad sign up for obedience training and find a safer collar to use.

  • no thats bull and mean.. you dont hurt the dog when they disobey.. you dont teach anything making them fearful, you teach by praise when they do something good, then they will continue doing it because they get praise. tell your dad to watch the dog whisperer and i would quit letting him take your dog on walks because thats just cruel!

http://www.cesarmillaninc.com/tips/basic… print this out and teach your whole family how to walk a damn dog!

  • ....no! Just a slight tug to make them aware thats not what they should do. If they try to pull you, you should stop and wait a few seconds, then go again. Include the slight tug also, but stopping is the best method i think.

  • Good grief, what idiot told your dad that one? You all need to go to a training class to learn how to handle the poor dog.

  • well if somebody put a collar around your neck then yanked it really hard would that teach you anything? NO, it would just create fear!

  • Never do anything to make your dog yelp when training..bl

Dog Health Questions: What are they best books on dog training and dog behavior?

I'd like to add some new books to my collection, mainly on training and behavior. I'm not a huge fan of cesear millan so please don't suggest only his books. Please titles and authors if you can. I want books that you've read first hand and enjoy. Books that you would recommend to a friend.

Dog Training Aids - The Leading Dog Training Methods Revealed

Recommended Answer:
For raising and training puppies I like Dr. Ian Dunbar's books Before You Get Your Puppy and After You Get Your Puppy. For the dog-human interaction I like Patricia O'Connell's The Other End of the Leash.

For a general book, It's Me or the Dog is actually pretty good and comprehensive.

Edit: Some books recommended represent training techniques based on outdated understanding of canine behavior. For example, the ideas of the Monks of New Skete were transitional between the old harsh training techniques and modern positive techniques. Be careful what you take from them. My 1978 edition of How To Be Your Dog's Best Friend, talks about how to discipline, for crimes as heinous as house soiling:

"How hard do you hit the dog? A good general rule is that if you did not get a response, a yelp or other sign, after the first hit, it wasn't hard enough. Remember, one good correction will save you fifty. You cannot hurt the dog with this method, or cause irreparable damage. Your contact must be firm." The chapter closes with the notorious, misguided "Alpha-Wolf Roll-Over."

As far as Siegal and Margolis go, I have seen "Uncle Matty" training in person. In my opinion he is a charlatan.

  • I really liked 'The Loved Dog' by Tamar Geller and 'The Dog Listener' by Jan Fennell. Also, Victoria Stillwell, 'It's Me or the Dog.' Also 'Calming Signals' by Turid Rugaas. Very educational on non-verbal dog communication. 'How To Be Leader of The Pack…And Have Your Dog Love You For It' by Patricia McConnell.

I like what Milan says about dog psychology - it's really helpful in treating dogs like dogs - but these books I've suggested are more about communicating with the dog and persuading it to do what you want, rather than dominating the dog. They also talk about how dogs think as compared to humans. I've incorporated parts of all of their methods and have been very successful in helping rehab dogs, including puppy mill dogs. Each of mine and my parents' dogs are rescues and using their methods helped them overcome things like trauma because of being beaten on a regular basis, being chained outside, being starved.

  • In all honesty? I walk into the book store every couple of weeks, stand in front of the dog section, close my eyes, and just reach out and grab a book. Unless it's a book about a specific breed, i tend to get the first two i choose, just like that.

You can learn something from just about ANY book you pick up, even if it's "what not to do"! In addition, some books/trainers will have information that you can nitpick through or that you can adapt to your own style.

I've read all of Millan's books, i've read Dunbar, i've read McConnell, i've read Rugaas, i've read Monks of New Skeet, i've read Aloff, i've read Koehler, and so on. They've ALL taught me one thing or another.

Dog Health Questions: Dog Training?

We have a Yellow Labrador who is seven months old. He has already learned how to sit, lay down, and put his hands up. I really appreciate the breed. I was wondering if there are any classic tricks or skills that I could teach him. I know that labs tend to be water dogs and we have a large lake in front of our house. If you have a trick/skill please explain how to go about training him. I also would like to train him with a whistle but I have no idea how to go about doing it. He is very willing to learn and seems to enjoy performing. He is a purebred, his father was bred for show and his mother was a hunting dog. He came from a reputable breeder and is an amazing dog.

Considerations When Buying Dog Training Equipment

Recommended Answer:
The best tricks we taught my collie/lab mix to do were to wipe his feet when he comes inside the house and to put his toys away before he goes to bed.

The wiping the feet trick... we really just taught him to walk in a circle around the carpet in our mudroom (if its really muddy, of course, we get down on our knees and towel him off) but this trick is good when he's just coming in from dewy morning grass. We just used a treat to get him to move in a circle and repeated "wipe your feet" over and over.

To put his toys away, we just made sure it happened every single night right after he came in from his last potty run and before he went in the crate for bed. At first he got a treat for each toy he brought to us and put in his toy basket but now we just give him one after he is all done and inside his crate. This one really isn't that hard as long as you do it every single day... dogs love a consistent schedule and will learn to love anything you do whether it be grooming or walks if you do it the same time every day.

GOOD LUCK!

Puppy and Dog Training

  • If you want them to come to a whistle you have to whistle and he will probably come to see what the noise is then you give him a treat. Do this 2-3 times a day and you will have him trained to come to a whistle in no time.

    Good luck!

  • My dog likes "BANG" (play dead). Here is how:If he already knows lay down, here is what to do. have the dog sit. point your fingers like a gun at him, and fire, saying "BANG!". Then gently push the dog over till he falls over onto his side. rub his belly so he put his legs up. Do this over and over!

I got my dog to do it, when i say BANG he falls over and puts his legs in the air. He loves it cause he gets his belly rubbed when he does it right! He also likes ROLL. here is how:
get him to lay down. gently push him over until he is on one side, then on his back, then on the other side. all while saying ROLL. when he is on the side and almost done, stand up so he will have to finish the roll to get up. as soon as he does, praise him. That is how i trained mine!
Here is another way if the dog will not let you roll him over:
get him to lay down, and put a treat in front of his nose. slowly move the treat around and above his head until he rolls, be sure to say ROLL as you are doing this. This didn't work for my dog cause he just moved his head to get the treat, but it may work for you. my dog also let me push him around onto his back, which you dog may not want.

This may sound really stupid, but a good way to train is with PRAISE ONLY, that is how I train. If you do it with food reward, the dog may not do it if you don't have food. when he does a trick say GOOD BOY, GOOD ROLL, GOOD ROLL!!!
or what ever you are getting him to do. then he will learn why you are praising him. I do not use food ever, my dog does the trick because he wants to make me happy and get praised. But be careful, always praise at least a little bit, so the dog will feel appreciated, even if he has known the trick for a long time, it is important to show him he is still doing is right.GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN!
