Dog Health Questions: Celebrity Dog Trainers?

I know a lot of people here either swear by Ceaser Milian's training methods, while other despise his views on training. I'm not a personal fan, but truthfully haven't watch very many episodes of his show. The TV trainer I watch, and adore, is "It's me or the dog's" trainer, Victoria Stillwell. I have never had an issue with any method employed on her show, and often the advice I give on Y!A comes from something I've seen work on her show. Only owning two dogs, I obviously haven't seen every problem out there, but her firm yet positive-training techniques always make sense to me, unlike Milian's domenience based techniques, and of course on the show, they always appear to be effective. ;) Does anyone else have any views on her techniques? Would you recommend her books or show to new dog owners to gain tips on training? Whose philosophy of dog training do you find more effective, Stillwell's or Milians? And other general impressions...

All About The American School Of Dog Training

Recommended Answer:
I agree with you 100%, I love Victoria Stillwell's methods, she's easy to follow and you can apply her methods at home which I do to both our dogs. I even answer questions on here using her proven methods to other Y!A people who are having similar issues. Granted I don't experience a lot of problems with my Weimaraner since I have a very well behaved dog due to spending time and money having her trained and making sure she gets plenty of exercise and constantly working with her.

I like Cesar I think what he does is fantastic but he cannot be followed at home except for making sure you are definately the pack leader so for that he's great.

But I highly recommend Victoria to anyone having issues with their dogs because her methods are easy to follow and work.

Thanks :-)

Dog Health Questions: How can I make my dog less scared?

My dog is a German Shepherd mix... she acts tough and barks at people but when ever they approach her she cowers off with her ears back!

Can I make her less scared because all of those police dogs that the police men try to train their dogs don't they every get a scaredy cat dog and they have to train them to be less scared?so i just wanna know if I can make my doggy less scared... like a police dog if someone were to break in she would stand up for her self instead of running of!

Like if little dog training to make her braver? I don't want to slowly make her meet the new people.. i just want her to be BRAVE! PLEASE HELP!

House-Training And Housebreaking a Dog - Training Guide

    Recommended Answer:
Ideally you want your dog to become self confident and appropriately friendly, not a vicious guard dog! She's most likely barking at people because she's somewhat nervous in the first place. However, a nervous dog can be a dangerous dog. The behavior you describe, ears laid back, can be a signal that the dog is unhappy and indeed might try to defend itself if pushed. Many dogs will first try to avoid (run from) a situation, then defend if necessary and if provoked further.

I suggest taking your dog to obedience. Obedience training should help socialize your dog to various other dogs and people and help her develop skills to become more confident as well as develop more appropriate behavior.

A good start might be to check with the local pet shelters in your area. Many offer classes themselves. If they don't, they should be able to offer you resources on where to find classes. A reputable trainer will know how to deal with this behavior and help you to help your dog. I suggest advising the trainer of the behavior prior to attending class.

You don't give any background about the dog. I'm curious what situation the dog may have come from and the age of the dog. Those answers will also impact how is the best way to handle the dog.

Dog Training Collars - A Helping Tool

    • i don't know if you can turn her into a protection dog, but lots of socialization and getting her to trust you will do wonders. take her around new people as much as possible. be her "pack leader". watch some of the dog whisperer on national geographic. good luck!
      btw... i LOVE shepherds.

    • you don't say how old she is but sounds like she hasen't had alot of socializing that is so important for young puppies. don't force people on her or you will end up with a fear biter.

i would suggest you find a good posative trainer that knows how to read the dogs body language and can show you how to work with her and do it right.

as she builds confidence she will become a better pet and all dogs will protect their property naturally. you really don't want an agressive dog that you can't handle or you could be in for a law suit.

    • Dogs that show fear during evaluation or training do not get to be police dogs. It sounds cruel, but police dogs are a dime a dozen and suppliers will not waste their time on rehabilitating dogs just to sell them.

You do not want to teach your dog to be aggressive by barking at people or biting them. All you will end up with is a FEAR BITER.

Try socialization! Let people come up to her and feed her treats. Your dog will be less afraid of people if you teach her there is nothing to be afraid of...

      Good luck!

    • Any dog will protect their people and property if they feel threatened, even a timid or shy dog. So for protection, don't worry about it.

However, especially with a shepherd who have a reputation, you need to get her used to people and places. And the only permanent way to do this is a little at a time. Start taking her out, where she can see people, but not too close. Then gradually get closer to them. Have a stranger offer her a treat/cookie.

Scared dogs can have a tendency to nip or bite at someone. Again, being a shepherd who has a reputation of guard dog, you want to make sure the dogs does not fall into this tendency. Although you say you don't want to slowly make her meet people, that is the only true way to get a dog comfortable in the real world.

    • Every dog has its own personality. The police dogs are the overly-aggressive ones; your's is timid. All you can do is love her, & introduce any other dog to her, very slowly & cautious, while talking to her in a sootheing voice. Don't try to introduce any hyper big dogs to her. One time, years ago, I got a female german shepherd mix from the pound, to use as a guard dog. Well, I gave her to some teen-aged boy, cause she was just a big ole lover dog. It's usually the males that are the brave ones.

    • You can help your dog. It takes time, training and patience. You want to help your dog be braver, not just because you want a brave dog but because her fearfulness can become aggressiveness. Do not punish your dog or force her to deal with things that scare her. Understand triggers, thresholds, counter conditioning and desensitization. These are the basic training concepts that you use to change how a dog feels. You are right to think about working on how the dog feels, not just how she behaves.

    The Importance of Dog Training

    • i know Cezar Malian (the dog whisperer)has a book out but i never read it but his show it the best!!

    • "Ceasar's Way: (Ceasar Milon) is a great book. Taught me to be the Alpha and how to project calm assertive energy when working with my dogs. I can now get them into a calm submissive state much quicker. (no more tearing through the house, leaping on & off furniture) much much calmer dogs.

Also check on breed specific books.

    • Cesar Millan has a book out that is available on eBay, Amazon Books etc. He is an awesome person with dogs. He teaches owners how to be pack leaders and to let the dog know that they are in charge. Most dogs will take on that role if they are allowed to. And most people allow them to. He has a website also

      Enjoy

    • Secrets of a Professional Dog Trainer by Adam G Katz it covered every dog training topic and the book included a membership to the website. I refer back to it often when my Meatloaf goes crazy..

    Here's how I housetrain dogs

ENTIRE WEEKEND- I dedicate the whole weekend to training the dog.
    1) 12-24 hour Fast (usually no food after late Thurs night and I begin training Friday afternoon after work- 12 hours for a puppy)- feeding all weekend in the form of rewarding for pottying outdoors.
    2) Dog restricted at all times to crate or leash tied to my waist so I don't forget to watch the dog.
    3) Bait water- blenderized canned dogfood in water... dog is hungry and drinks a LOT- this gives me tons of opportunities to take dog outside and reward.
    4) Pocket full of kibble to reward successful pottying outdoors
    5) Praise Praise Praise for successful pottying outside.. its a party!!!
    6) Quick trip outside if I see the dog looking like it might be considering peeing
    7) Rolled up newspaper to beat MYSELF over the head if I don't watch the dog closely enough

Edit: You can set a timer to remind yourself to take her out every half hour or so.

    • The key to successful house training is supervision. Watch your dog constantly. Your first duty is to identify what your dog does right before it eliminates. Does your dog sniff? circle? hold his ears in a certain position? Some dogs provide signals that are easy to spot, while others are more difficult. Watch carefully and PRAISE her when she goes where she is supposed to! Dogs CRAVE your approval!

Dog Health Questions: Weimaraner dog training questions?

How old should she be when she is able to play fetch:

All the toys i have given her she doesent want:

She enjoys eating leaves and grass more than her toys/treats:

I looked for videos how to teach to walk on a leash (NICELY) and how it says stop and wait until the dog looks at you and give her a treat and start walking again... but the problem is she wont stop pulling even for a treat:

im probabaly gonna enroll in some petsmart puppy training classes, cuss the videos made it look so easy but its so much harder when you actually do it, especially with a new puppy:

What are some good weimaraner female names, specifically something polish, but easy to pronounce so you can say it in English and polish:

She wont stop biting the leash and it makes it even harder to walk on a leash:

i got the puppy a little early 5 weeks instead of 8, but its a good reason, so dont start yelling at me for that, and its too long to explain.. could her age be part of the reason she is so "difficult" right now?

It is a purebred weimaraner if your wondering, the breeder says its a blue weimaraner im not sure what that means cuss all weim puppies have blue eyes and this weim has a metallic shiny coat (which i think looks cool as hell :P)

Any other advice on "difficult" puppies would be great, i really am devoted to this dog, i might just have to work on my patience, but im never mean to the dog, when he bites ppl i yell no or whenever he "goes" inside, i take him out right after, im crate training him and he does seem pretty good about going outside hes only had one "mistake"..

how much time should i spend bonding with him until i start training him? i read on the petsmart training classes he has to have 10 weeks so ill go enroll in 5 weeks.

All About The American School Of Dog Training

      Recommended Answer:
So this is a 5 week old puppy now? Yes, its early, and done is done, so no yelling at you, but you do need to realize that there are likely to be some issues related to leaving the litter early, especially as far as socialization with other dogs goes. If you can find a good puppy socialization class, you may be able to do that before enrolling in a regular Petsmart class. But do be careful, some of these classes do more harm than good, especially be careful if the puppies look out of control or some puppies are getting picked on (watch a class before you attend one!) Another option would be to find a trainer to come to your home- remember that this pup will hopefully be with you for the next 10 years or more, and this early training is probably the best investment you can make in your puppy's life. Training a 5 week old puppy means training in short sessions, and you might want to consider hand feeding him his meals while training. I have included a link to a wonderful e-book called After you get your puppy by Dr Ian Dunbar (a vet). I do question the ethics of a breeder who lets a pup go to a new home without adequate information at the tender age of 5 weeks, and especially when breeding a non-standard color.

Blue refers to the color of the coat, a beautiful dark blue, instead of the more usual grey. The blue is actually a dominant color, so if even one of the parents has the color, it will be passes on to at least some of the puppies.

Don't worry about fetch for now, spend some time bonding with her and teaching her loose leash walking (I'll post a link to a video below) and when you can't worry about training him to walk nicely, just pick him up and carry him, so he doesn't learn that pulling gets him anywhere. And of course, housebreaking!

Dog Training Schools - How to Pick a Good School

      • Some dogs don't retrieve, but I've never gotten a dog before the correct age of 7-8 weeks. I've always puppy-aptitude tested my puppies to be sure they DID retrieve, before I picked one out.

Are you AWARE in some states with PUPPY LEMON laws, it is ILLEGAL to sell a puppy until it is 8 weeks old & has seen a vet for an exam and has had its first set of shots? No shots should be given until 7-8 weeks of age, or they will fight with the mother's anti-bodies. Did you go to the WCA's site to read about shots? (It's IMPORTANT.)
No multi-vaccines shots should be given. Take the WCA's (Weimaraner Club of America's) shot recommendation info to the vet.
        Print it out.

I have no ideas what toys you've offered, but 5 weeks is WAY too young for her (?) to leave her litter. Don't be surprised if you later have behavior problems (too dominant, too fearful) if she was removed before she learned this, with/in her litter. I have no idea what socialization she's gotten, but puppies don't start playing much before this age, period. They are more playful at 6-7 weeks, etc. Could her age be part of the reason she is so "difficult" right now? ~DUH!!!!

The best training video is 'How To Raise a Puppy You Can Live With" by Rutherford & Neil/ Alpine publishing. But their book is cheaper. I'm not so in favor of using food, to correct pulling. How about you STOP moving FORWARD, if she's pulling, Just STOP, or you can even change direction. She will start watching if you change direction. If you are lazy, you can use a no-pull harness.

She wont stop biting the leash and it makes it even harder to walk on a leash. Correct for biting the leash and buy Bitter Apple, & spray the leash wiht it. In all likelihood puppy will taste it, when biting the leash and stop biting.

Classes are a good idea, but the quality varies at Petsmarts. What about dog obedience clubs? As a rule, you can't go to classes until she's had all her shots. Rabies isn't given until 16 weeks. Better start doing what you can at home. You can start teaching the puppy on day ONE. Start by teaching him or her its name. Come is next. That command can save the puppy's life.

It is not safe to take her out of your yard (for walking or exercise) & expose her to germs, until she's had her ALL of her shots. Parvo & Distemper are real, and can kill a puppy. The WCA says the puppy needs a booster for them at 12 weeks. She should have gone to the vet as soon as you got her, for a health exam.

ARE you aware you are referring to this puppy as both a she and a he? Why do you want POLISH names for the puppy? Weims are German breed.

If she's blue (gunmetal in coat color) it means you didn't get her from a reputable breeder. It's a DISQUALIFYING fault. Only backyard breeder & puppy mills sell blues. Check the AKC breed standard. Weims should be silver gray. All Weims are born with blue eyes, but they usually change as they mature, to amber. If she is black, she isn't purebred. Did you see the parents & was one or both of them blue, like the puppy?

Dog Health Questions: I need dog training tips. I'm getting a grown dog. He lived inside but will live outside in a house.?

How can I train him to get used to me and what I want him to do? Like not running away or in the street, coming when I call, etc.

Dog Training - Secrets For Training Your Dog

      Recommended Answer:
well as for running to the street keep him on a leash at all times or inside when ur away.Or if ur yard is fenced in pretty high then let him loose as long as there is no way out then he should be fine. And as for making him come when called...get some treets and make him sit somewhere and back away slowely and then put the treet down on the ground and say "Come" and if he comes before u say "come" then pick up the treet before he gets it and say "no" and make him go back and if he comes then let him have the treet. And then everytime he gets it right back away more and more each time.Everything is with rewards and patience with a dog.Give him a chance...it will take some time for him to perfect the things u teach him. :] good luck and just have fun with him! i'm sure you'll be best friends!

Dog Training Schools - How to Pick a Good School

      • I cannot tell where you live but in most urban areas of the United States it is illegal to have a dog running loose. So, if you live in the US and your dog can run into the street, that's not going to work.

Also, changing an outdoor dog to an indoor dog is pretty easy, changing an indoor dog to an outdoor dog is usually kind of difficult. Depending on the dog, most dogs enjoy being close to their "pack" - which means YOU. Moving them outdoors could be very hard on the dog. I have had many dogs who loved spending all day outdoors, however, I bring them into a small room of the house at night. They love it.

        Good luck.

      • You are going to adopt a dog that has lived indoors in a house and with his people all his life and you want to make it an outdoor dog? And your concern is how to keep it from running away? LOL

Reconsider or don't adopt the dog.

There are professional trainers. A professional trainer maybe able to help you with what you should expect when you have a dog.

Some people have no dog sense at all. Some folks should just not have dogs. That is OK as long as you recognize you are not really a dog person.

      • Don't get the dog. I don't know who in their right mind would give you their inside dog knowing that your going to make it live outside.

Dogs are social creatures and want to be with their people. They should be part of your family not stuck outside. I feel so sorry for your dog.
