Dog Health Questions: Dog training help? train it to overcome his fears?

My 5 month old Border Collie is terrified of things that make noise while it moves like dragging the garbage cans on pavement and also, His scared of my longboard (long skateboard) Now that is important for him to overcome because im a teenager, and I love him, and my longboard and i want to ride it while his on the leash with me. I want him to overcome his fears but I dont know how to help him. today and a few other times i put treats everytime he gets close, or when he touches it, but idk It doesnt seem to help. its like he forgets what he learned last time. and He is very smart. He learned how to open the door by pullin on a rope in like 5 mins. very proud of him (: So any steps for how to help him? thanks

Be very careful with what you expose your puppy to. What is imprinted into the brain as a puppy usually stays with them for life. That includes very loud noises so stop dragging the garbage cans around.

You may have to go easy with the skateboard for a while and don't take your dog with you until he is at least a year old. In the meantime, put the treats directly on the skateboard and roll it very slowly with your hand. Keep the noise level way down. It helps if you have the skateboard close by when you are playing with his favourite toy. That will also associate the skateboard with a good experience. When he is lying down in the yard then gently roll the skateboard with your hands slowly past him. Stay about 2 metres away and first and see how he reacts. If he stays calm then reward him. Move it closer in over time, again slowly.

Once he is used to that then you can get on the skateboard and go past him. Again, a good distance away. Get closer if he remains calm and reward him with a treat.

This might take just a few weeks or it might take a few months. It depends on how scared he is of the skateboard right now.

Another tip, if you get thunderstorms then act normally. Play with your dog with his favourite toy. If he is barking or whining then just ignore him. Don't cuddle him or pat him as that's rewarding him for being afraid.

  • make sure you expose him to noise at all times you can. Loud bangs, crashes ect. make sure he is on a leash in case he tries to run. You can teach him as soon as he hears a loud noise to sit (with treats). You need to redirect his attention from the loud noise with training. They love to train and need it! Also exercise him a lot and it will help. It will take time but have patience. good luck

  • 5 months is often a fearful age for many dogs, and BCs have their "issues" often including noises. Many people talk about how great BCs are (I love them) but you also need to understand what they are NOT necessarily good at, and this article is a must read for anyone with BCs

  • Is there a chance that the dog was abused before you got him? If so it could just simply take time to earn his trust. In the mean time rewarding him is probably the best solution, although it will take time Collies are smart animals and he will catch on. Good luck!

  • I would gradually introduce him to louder noises and then he probably won't be scared eventually. And I believe that your dog is smart, but it might be hurting his ears because dogs ears are sensitive. They can hear much better than us
