Dog Health Questions: Dog training question?

How can i train my dog to only have bowl movements on one side of the yard ?

The Benefits Of Positive Dog Training

Recommended Answer:
dog trainer 30 plus yrs -
Take him out on a leash for 2 weeks. Only allow him that particular area to go in. Also if he goes somewhere else...put some rubber gloves on and collect it making an area of his poo. He will eventually go to "his" place. This is a really good question.

  • well there are a couple of ways. With my dog, we sat her on one side of the yard and wouldnt let her come back into the house until she went to the bathroom, and once she went we gave her a treat. After a month the dogs start to realize they get treats whenever they go on one side. Also, if you get your dog to pee on that certain side 2-3 times, it will automatically start going there for the majority of the time because their scent is familiar. :)

  • when he starts going towards the other side pick him up take him to the other side immediatly!

when u put him on that side pet him and reward him ecspecially if he goes 2 the bathroom!

when he goes 2 the bathroom on the other side pick him up and take him 2 the other side and give him attention.if he tries 2 go back 2 the other side block him & say "ah ah" loudly and quickly!

Dog Health Questions: Dog Training?

I want to make my boxer house train, he'll be four in Feburary. Hes really active and playful and gets real excited. I want to know best way to get him to become housetrained, hes already nurtured.

Dog Training Has Many Benefits

Recommended Answer:
There is tons of things to learn about potty training your dog. From what he eats to play time, nap time, etc... all of this has to do with potty training. Here is something you can do for your Boxer. Catch the action before you have an reaction!!! what this means is watch for the signs. Sniffing, and circling the area if his in a squatting postion too late you already lost him. Don't hit him or rub is noise in it. Remenber dogs have very short attention span. They don't know what happen 2 secs ago or a few days ago they just know what's going on right now. So what you would do is take him outside let him find a place that he likes and let him go. Once he goes give him praise or a treat you want to let him know that what his doing is correct behavior. Also, you want to get a bell and hang it eye level to the dog. Every time you take him out ring the bell eventualy he will ring the bell himself when he needs to go. Agian, if you yell at him, hit, or rub is noise in it. The only thing you are doing is making him scared and then he will go behind your back. Also, very improtrant you have to be on top of him at all times through out his life.
Good Luck

Effective Communication in Dog Training

  • Wow, you're kind of all over the place with what you want.

Basic commands like sit, stay, and come are easy enough to teach using positive reinforcement and there are tons of books and web sites that can help with this.

Not pulling on a leash can also be easily resolved. You can purchase a head halter or a harness that attaches in the front. Either of those will reduce pulling.

Not going after other animals is something that you may have to resolve through management rather than modification. That means if you don't want your dog chasing other animals, don't let him.

If you want your dog to stay in your yard, get a fence.

The protection issue is something that you won't have much luck with. Labs aren't the right breed and at over 6 years old, it's a bit late to begin that kind of training.

Dog Health Questions: Neighor ruined our dog sitting trade by paying me anyway. Help!?

My neighbor had a crisis a few days before her 10-day Alaska cruise: her dog sitter cancelled at last moment. She asked me if I would keep her dog. I told her yes, and I thought I knew what I was getting myself into, but it was tougher than I thought. Her dog just turned 1 while she was away, and it is a yappy Maltice. Now it's a cutie, but that dog is in serious need of dog training (plus it peed all over my house). Well, just before she left she said "When I return I want to take you and Marty {my husband} out for dinner" but I said, "Well, I think it would be great if you would be avialable for 10 days of dog sitting for us considering we travel a lot". Well, that was our deal. Now she is back and she just brought over a nice gift from Alaska, a $75 gift certificate to Baby's R Us (I'm 15 wks pregnant), and she gave us a $75 gift certificate to a VERY exp restaurant here in Altanta (the cost of dinner at this place will be at least $150.00). (continued below)

Dog Training Advice For Training Your Best Friend

Recommended Answer:
I think she realizes her dog is a handful.

I still think the trade is on.

That was the deal. Hold her to it.

When you go away, bring her a token gift from the place you traveled to.

I used to have the same arrangement with my neighbor, but we let the dogs stay in their own house and did visits 4 times a day.

Why it's Important For New Dog Owners to Take Dog Training Seriously

  • Not trying to take away from your frustration but at least she paid you. My so called friend pulled a stunt like that on me, except she never paid, never offered and never watched my dogs. When it was my turn to go away for a weekend she was sick and the avoided calling for about 2 months.

  • It sounds like she was just being very greatful that you agreed to look after her obviously annoying dog on the spur of the moment. After all, her dog did pee all over your house and you really should be in line for some compensation. (I had to replace the carpet in my house after keeping my sister's dog once.) When you get ready to travel yourself ask her if she can keep your dog as the deal stated and get her something equally nice in return. I'm not sure how much dog sitters get paid, but it can't be much more than she spent on gifts for you.

  • Screw he ***** next door, keep your gifts and start saving a little money for a proper dog minding place or kennel sitting. The dog you know will be treated properly in such a place and can have a small holiday as well. Kennels are not as expensive as people think, do some research make some calls and get some quotes. You don't wont to leave your dog with somebody that's going to be cranky at you and taking it out on your dog. You will know exactly what your dog is doing in proper care and it will have the time of its life. Hope that's a little helpful. Sometimes its not the est to take a cheaper way out.

  • well my friend does it too I watched her not house broke baby first for 4 day when she went to TX and she brought gifts and I also watched her dog when she and her Hubby went' to Mexico for 10 day she brought a lot of gifts for my whole family well any way we heave a agreement where she said she would watch my dog whenever I needed to leave the town , but I'm one of those people that only goes to a place where they accept dogs. well any way I think that you need to keep the agreement she is maybe feeling just guilty for leaving the dog with you on such a short notice , and that's why she brought all the gifts for you guys . so when the time comes just go over and ask her if she could watch your dog when you guys leave , and go from there if she says yes just make sure to remember to bring gifts for her .

  • It sounds like she was genuinely appreciative of you doing this at the last minute and wanted to show it by ALSO gettng you those gift certificates. I think you should THANK her for them and ask her how much notice she will need for the dog sitting (maybe she can dog sit for a day or two while you are in the hospital with the new baby). I don't think she is trying to get out of the dog sitting.

  • I would think she knows how crazy her dog is and wanted to pay you a little something for your trouble. Why was she getting a dog sitter anyways if you guys have a open trade??

If you ever need her I would ask her a few weeks before your trip and see how she takes it! if she sounds weird about it- I would sign up for another pet sitter. if she DOES keep your pup I would get her a LITTLE something- Nothing over $50.

  • I think she was just great full you watched her dog at the last second and wanted to do something nice for you. Since she said she would still watch your dog I'd go ahead and ask when you go away. I prefer my pets to stay at someone's house myself, then I know they are getting attention and not in a cage the whole time I'm gone and alone all night. It would be nice if you could bring her back something from your trip as a thank you.

  • i just think she was thanking u on such last min thing. if u hadn't watched her dog she may have had to cancel or pay alot to a kennel to board which would be more than what she gave u in gifts.... besides puppy sitting is a lot of work and u got a 'bun in the oven'. and yes u should get her a little gift for watching ur dog when u take a trip.....wish i had nice nieghbors....
    oh and congrats!

  • Your neighbor sounds like a sweet, caring, and giving person.
It seems like she brought you gifts because she was grateful that you took good care of her pet, and not that she wasnt wanting to watch your dog. I am sure she didnt think about it the whole time while on vacation.
Can you imagine her going around trying to shop for a gift for you thinking the whole time "Is this gift good enough so I can get out of watching the neighbors dog"????????
I dont think so. She will still watch your dog and now its your turn to get her a gift to show her how grateful you are. And dont worry about the price of the gift, you should find a cool unique one that she will love!!!
And maybe you could invite her, and her dog over for a Bar-B-Que, and whos knows, maybe you, and your dog both have made a friend for life.
And if not a close friend, then a nice reliable, close to home, in-home pet sitter.
We could all be so lucky! Whe I go out of town, its like pulling teeth to get anyone I know, (including family members, whos dogs I have sat for), to watch my animlas. I dont mind boarding my dogs, but I cant board, chickens, cats and Horses. But whoever does watch them, usually my cousins kids, or a neighbor kid, I always try to either pay them, cook a kick^%$ meal for them, or bring them a gift.

P.S. Just a hint here, but her thinking of getting you a gift for your new baby alone, was totally awesome. She must like you to remember that you were pregnant. She knew that her gift would be well used and appreciated. She sounds so kind, wish my neighbos were like that. LOL

I saw a TV series when I was a young kid called 'The Littlest Hobo' was a german shep dog that didn't belong to anyone, but used to travel around by itself & always ended up saving someone in each episode...Maybe there was a movie made of this & the series was a spin off from it...The series was made in B&W...So fairly old series I'd think.

Dog Health Questions: Need Dog training help?

Ok so I am a volunteer at a humane society and there is a dog there that has been brought back 3 times (possibly more). The first time wasn't her fault (person has allergies) but the other 2 times was because of how territorial she is.

She is a very sweet dog most of the time and is about 1 1/2-2 years old. She has territorial aggression and tends to snap at you if you force her to do something she doesn't want to. I've looked up some stuff on how to fix the behavior but all i can find was "go see a Professional dog trainer."

Well, I obviously can't do that and the humane society is small but always busy so they don't have the money or time to do it. She isn't a puppy anymore and I am worried about her chances of getting a permanent home. I would take her but I have no way of contacting my roommates (they are away for the summer) and they have a very skittish dog. Plus, i have 2 cats and i don't know how she would react around either.

I want to help her. If you are a professional dog trainer or have worked with such dogs before advice would be appreciated.

Do not tell me that there is nothing i can do for her or to go see a professional. It will just serve to piss me off.

For more information please contact me at whmndz@aol.com and if I don't reply within 2-3 days resend it from a different email. Sometimes yahoo doesn't send to aol. And Sorry this is so long. I can help you on my email in shorter steps. I would like to see the dog also. If you have pictures...send them.

I am not a professional but I've had these problems with my 3-legged GSD/Lab/Pitbull mix that I got from the shelter. I go and get dogs that are shy or have these problems and "fix" them and then either find a new home for them that will ensure and practice what I've done or keep them. I'm getting a new one once the paper work goes through. Okay so the dog I had would charge and bite with full grips on the entering stranger's arm or leg. She went for my Dad's handyman's neck once. Okay to fix this, what I did was first started practicing pack order. If you adopt this dog yourself this will work. You have to spend loads of time with this dog though.

Start off with excercising the dog. If you go jogging, or put the dog on a treadmill. Dogs have a natural migration instinct and that is to travel. The leader of the pack determines when and where they travel and how long. Wolf packs travel for miles a day to cover and track territory. Walking the dog, if you're dedicated and don't want the dog to be put down, is the best thing right now. When you walk the dog, YOU go out first and call the dog then. Practice this until the dog does it right. When you open the door and the dog is trying to charge out, then BODY BLOCK the dog in the door way. This will eventually get to the dog that it CANNOT go out until you tell it to. After the dog is there peacefully and sitting and waiting for you to call it, go down the stairs or out the door and then call it's name with a calm assertive voice. Don't yell, because the dog will learn that it is only to come after you say Buddy, Buddy, BUDDY!! It will come after you do that. So say it once and tug lightly on the leash. After excersing the dog will be in a MEDITATION MODE and this is desirable for training obedience. The dog will rest at your feet. Start training to COME when called, DROP or OUT, and SIT. These are some of the most important commands you can teach a dog.

Entroducing the dog to different things, like umberellas and cats and dogs. Make sure the dogs or cats are seperated and the new dog is in a kennel and let the more submissive dogs run around and sniff the dog. Next you introduce the dogs one-by-one supervised on a leash. Killing and Chasing cats are natural for a dog because the dog is a hunter and it's PREY DRIVE is to chase any moving object until it is caught. The best time to introduce animals is when in MEDITATION MODE. I'm talking jogging for an hour or so well if it's a collie, it will need mental and physical stimulation whereas if it is a greyhound then since it's a sprinter, then you could let it run around in the yard for a few times, put it on a leash, and then walk in the park for 30-45 minutes. When letting the dog off leash even in an enclosed area, you should make the dog sit, and then take the leash off and then give it the OKAY or FREE command and let it go and play. Throw a ball and let it chase it.

Food is important to a dog so this is a great way to get her out of her aggression, make her do obedience commands and then after, go and prepare the food and mix your hands into it. Raw meat diet or half dry, half wet would do nicely when mixing it because the pack leader provides food so you want your scent on the food. Make the dog wait for food. The dog could pick up immediatly or not but even if you wait an hour for the dog to calmly sit down and wait for food (always feed after exercise) you do it.

Grooming- well some dogs like this and some don't so if your dog doesn't then hold the dog down and put a muzzle on the dog. Start with the basics like just water one day and wet it everyday. Press each paw and separate each toe. Play with the ears and open the mouth. Touch each canine. Eventually start with soaping. Anyone who will adopt the dog will have their kids or themselves groom the dog. Let the dog explore each tool you use and introduce it to as many things as you can. Remember dogs are different than humans and will experience things differently. They start will the NOSE, EARS, EYES. Humans are opposite with eyes, ears, and lastly smell.
You should never force a dog to do something because they will snap at you either first or last. What I mean is that every dog has a FIGHT or FLIGHT instinct. Some will try to go away and run and if it can't then it will use it's last resort and that is to attack and try to get away. It doesn't know that the medicine is good for it or that you are trying to keep the dog calm when it breaks its leg. It probably thinks that you are trying to eat it because it is weak and it knows that everything will go for the weakest link. Some dogs will fight first if dominate. This is why you practice

The Main Benefits Of Dog Training

  • Can you guys call around asking dog trainers to donate a few hours a week for training, to teach y'all how to train aggressive dogs? Call veterinarians and ask if they can put you in touch with dog trainers. Or they may be listed in the yellow pages.

  • What an immense waste of resources on a dog that should have met the big blue needle already.

I wonder how many dogs who DON'T have issues will be turned away and perhaps euthanized while this dog takes up valuable time, money and more importantly SPACE!

  • Dogs that snap at people should not be adopted out, they should be euthanized.

  • I'm sorry, do you own and run the shelter? If they deem the dog unadoptable because it is showing aggression, the dog WILL be euthanized. Try again.
Please don't come on here looking for help and then give attitude to people for helping you.

You SHOULD go see a professional dog trainer. Why can't you take the initiative to contact some trainers in your area and see if any of them would be willing to help give you some guidelines for free?

I also hate to break it to you but snapping at a person for telling the dog to do something is not territorial aggression. That is called a bad attitude and has nothing to do with territory.
Someone needs to learn how to properly correct a dog and start working with that dog on corrections.

  • I understand that you are a volunteer and certainly your heart is in the right place, but one thing you should understand is that because of varying circumstances, not all dogs can be rehabbed. She is a liability for the shelter so it is either get professional training or have her put down and most shelters won't put those kinds of resources towards something that may or may not work. I am surprised the shelter hasn't euthed her already. It is the sane, sensible thing to do.

  • What does the dog snap at? When you tell her to sit, stay, lie down? or when your trying to put a leash on her? Or When your giving her food? I am a dog trainer and My min pin was agressive when i rescued her and she has calmed down greatly from training. If you could answer my questions above i could do my best to try and help you. I care for all animals and want them in all loving permanent homes ! anything i can do to help :]

  • The other posters are right, I'm sorry you don't see it that way but what the shelter has is a potential liability risk. This dog is NOT territorial, a dog that snaps because you corrected it is not territorial it's untrained and aggressive. So what you basically want someone to do is to tell you (who has no experience in training) what to do in order to make this dog the "perfect" wonderful dog you think it should be? It's not going to happen. If you are inexperienced then you can actually do more harm to this dog than good. If the dog snapped for a correction then the correction was wrong. Dogs do not snap when you say AH AH, or oops, they snap when they are yanked or hit or treated aggressively. When properly corrected thru positive reinforcement training the dog would not have reacted aggressively.

People want dogs with no issues when they adopt, the number of people who know nothing that go in and adopt a dog is quite high, they don't want one that they have to spend a lot of time training.

This dog would need to be worked with for years and years, it's not a quick fix, any dog that shows aggression is unadoptable.

I'm sorry and I know you like this dog but unless YOU know what you're doing you shouldn't adopt this dog either.

Dog Health Questions: Dog training HELP !!!!?

ok so a women at work asked me for some help with her 3 year old boarder collie mix. so when the owners arn't home she is as well behaved as ever. but when they are home she wil go into the trash and take out tissues and rip them to shreds and eat them right in front of you. and when you try to take it all away she becomes aggressive and growls . please any ideas as to how to get this dog to stop goin into the trash

Dog Training & Dog Obedience Guide

Recommended Answer:
It sounds like she found something that attracts attention to her, and whenever they are home, she is going to do it. With a Border Collie, even a mix of one, they need a job and lots of attention and exercise. They are a great, very intelligent breed (the smartest, many believe) and it sounds like her way of getting her owners to focus on her is by making them a bit annoyed. But at least they are focused on her.

When she does this, get a toy, and encourage her to play tug, or fetch instead. This way, she uses her own toys to get attention. But also, it probably means that she is bored stiff. See if there can be an increase in walks at least, but finding anything to assign her as a job. This breed thrives off of work.

Is My Jack Russell Suitable For Schutzhund Dog Training?

  • Jillian put it perfectly. Make sure that the dog has plenty of exercise and enrichment; a smart dog like a border collie will turn into a nightmare to take care of otherwise. It is often because of not enough entertainment that behavioral problem develops, especially in more intelligent breeds such as this one. Try getting the trash can out of the dog's reach, too-- what she can't get, she can't tear up, right?

  • Negative reinforcement is the process that strengthens a behavior because an unpleasant situation is stopped or avoided as a consequence of that particular behavior. For instance, pushing on your dog's shoulders will provoke an unpleasant situation for him. If the pressure over his shoulders disappears when he lies down, he will be more likely to do the same in the future, just to avoid that unpleasant sensation. Thus, your dog will be learning to lie down through negative reinforcement.

  • You could try to take the garbage and put it in a spot where she can't reach it or you could find some chew toys at a local pet store that look a little or similar to the items in the garbage. If there are no look-alike toys just get a few soft chew toys for them to try to get apart but they can't. Make sure the toy is strong. =)

  • you can recommend this website to her: http://tlebeau.sitstay.hop.clickbank.net…
It's a complete dog training program for only $37. It's been extremely popular and a lot of people have had great success in training their dogs with it.

  • Get some toys/balls as a substitute. This is a high energy breed that needs to play and exercise. Playing a game of fetch or tug will likely be an acceptable substitute for her tissue issue. ;-)

  • Sounds like she isn't getting attention and is seeking it in other ways. I would make sure she gets attention and praise.

Dog Health Questions: German words dog training?

my german shepherd is undergoing training and already knows some of the german word commands. I am trying to train him that when he is in sit position and someone approaches I want to say a word to him to indicate that the person is 'ok" that he can allow himself to be petted and another word that he needs to be on alert. Can someone suggest something? my trainer does not like the word "ok" because if someone approaches and the dog is not sure and I say "ok" the dog witll think its OK to be nervous Makes sense. I just need a word to relate with a good feeling to the dog about a friendly person approaching. thanks!

The Benefits Of Positive Dog Training

Recommended Answer:
Although my dogs are trained in several languages, not all at the same time of course, I use the word, "be friends"...in English. As far as your real question, EVERYONE is a friend with the dog until told differently by you and that word is "passaulf" and it is proceeded if you wish by the word "packen" which means "bite". Hope I helped!!

Dog Training And Electronic Shock Collars

  • The words don't matter but you really need to train the dog as well as yourself. You can say anything and associate it with specific training - the words are of no concern. Choose a word dear - doesn't matter what it is since dogs don't speak any verbal language. They communicate through body language and smell but not verbal language. Whatever word you choose will simply be a cue but it won't be as strong a cue as what you do with your body and the smell you give off from the situation. The dog doesn't know what 'okay' means or doesn't mean. You don't need to have the dog 'undergo training' - YOU need to undergo training with the dog as the vast majority of training isn't the dog but the human.

  • you can use what ever you need, "OFF" to watch them, "IN" to let them near, what you choose have to be used all the time and you must stick to it all the time for the dog to understand, So it does not matter what you use as long as it is not your basic commands words. You do not have to use words, make a noise/sound for the dog "to be on alert" and a different noise/sound to let them stroke him or approach him what ever you use you must stick with it for it to work.

  • Not sure the spelling but 'Das ist gut' kind of means its okay.

You could use 'brav' as well. I agree with Greekman, though. A good protection dog views people as friendly until told otherwise. In my opinion you shouldn't need a special word to tell the dog someone is okay unless you are in an area where the threat of being assaulted is a daily occurance.
