Dog Health Questions: I live in Canada and i want to study dog behaviour and become a trainer any ideas?

okay so i am 17, turning 18 in March. I'm very curious on where i can find places where i can get a degree or certificate of some sort to become a dog trainer and possibly a dog behaviourist (or simply study dogs).. i have no intentions to take a Vet Tech course, because that won't help me, but i am thinking on and off about taking it in College, but it's really undecided.

so does anyone in Canada know any places, or someone i can contact sometime soon to get some information on training and studying dog behaviour.

After I receive my degree in veterinary technology, I'm going to go for the Diploma of Animal Behavior Sciences and Technology. They had a diploma for nutrition and fitness for canines, but I don't know what happened to it.

To become a proper canine behaviorist, you must be a DVM. There are occasionally courses offered for veterinary technologists, as well as specialties, but for the average person I don't think there is anything beyond certificate courses and the like.

Dog Health Questions: Deaf dog help?

I just found out recently that my 12yr old american eskimo dog is deaf. I am 13 and have absolutely NO CLUE how to interact with him. He is growing blind as well so we cannot use hand signals. He SOMETIMES listens to signals, but only sit, come, and stay. I hate it because i talk with my dog to sooth him when he is hyper, scared, etc..and i dont know how to do that now. stroking him doesnt seem to work.

If your dogs deaf, and nearly totally blind, then there's only touch left. Stroking seems to be the only option I'm afraid. When you do stroke him, be confident, if he's scared of something and you're also scared, he'll be able to sense that and obviously won't be able to calm down. Good Luck!

• if he is blind and deaf always approach him from the front and place you hand about 6" from his nose to allow him to smell that your there before touching him at all. other than that touch is the only interaction that the two of you will have.   You should use that tool to narrow down your search. Becareful as to not get a stubborn or aggressive breed, since you are young. You want a energetic, happy, loyal breed that are intelligent. You want an athetic dog if you want to play a lot. I would recommend a Collie or a Herding-type dog. Those seem to make very good friends if a lot of time is spent bonding and training.
  
  I want a dog that will protect and be a fierce fighter if someone intrudes into my home. But I also want one that will be intelligent and loyal and kind. So I purchased two wolf hybrids. 50% wolf 50% german shepherd. I can handle such a breed since I've educated myself, I wouldn't recommend a hybrid. But I'm just giving you an example.

Dog Health Questions: Should she even be allowed to have a training class?

So basically, there's this old woman who does a dog training class at the local centre...

When i first got my Pups i went there, to try it out and what i witnessed really put me off.

Her method of training a PUPPY to lie down was to stand on the dogs leash close to the collar so the puppys neck would be forced down and they would have no choice but to lie down.

My Pug was only little when we went there, one time he was playbowing at another dog there and the trainer came over and clapped her hands, yelled at my 5 month old puppy and told him to "STOP IT IF YOU KEEP DOING THAT YOULL BE A NASTY DOG"

I just looked at her in disbelief.

Another time someone was there with their labrador x poodle. The trainer was handling that persons dog to demonstrate something. The labrador X barked so the trainer yanked the leash and smacked said dog on the backside. The owner of that dog never came back again. Infact everyone we knew there has left since. Except this 'trainer' still uses treats... Nobody has said anything about her classes, but fellow dog owners i have spoken to say she is pretty harsh but then nothing else is said of it.. Everyone i know or where i live has been taking their dogs there and it's awful that she's teaching these new dog owners that that is how you handle/train a young dog...

I've gone to a different class since and never returned to hers.

What do you think? Should she even be able to have dog training classes?

This way of training a puppy has been proved to be cruel, harsh and bad in later life for the dogs attitude to owner and other family members.

The more recent techniques of reward based training is a far better method of training a successful socialized and balanced dog.

Although, technically this trainer is using outdated methods, the only way to make your point is to report and boycott her classes and try to get another source of training class to open up in your area. Perhaps you may like to go on a training course and set up a better method of dog/puppy training course yourself.

I taught my dog how to fetch at 7 weeks. I later taught him to sit, roll over, shake hands, etc...about 9 weeks. I used doggie treats called snausages. First you have to let them know what you are wanting them to do. Such as.. shaking hands... say "your command" and grab their paw. give them a treat.... keep doing that... soon enough they will be giving you their paw at their own will.
You need to be good with your commands. You need to use the same command name and not switch them. Such as high five.... or shake.... or hand shake... Dont switch them around. Once the dog learns the trick that is the command you need to use. This could confuse a dog by trying to use different words as your command.

Potty Train.... This is a tough one. I trained 3 cats and one dog by doing this.
(You will need to have time to do this)
Take them out every 2 hours... keep them out until they use the bathroom. As soon as they use the bathroom then you need to say good boy.. or good girl... (yanno as if your proud) dogs sense your tone of voice. Take them in immediately. The next 2 hours... do the same thing. Soon enough they will learn that going outside means to use the bathroom. Works like a charm. It does take time and patience to do it this way though.
As they get older you can start taking them out less and less. They will learn to hold it until it is time to go outside. Do this gradually. If they must go they will usually give you a sign by going to the door or scratching at you for your attention. Even barking... They may bark to let you know they need to go. Hope this helps you out.

• Don't know about the sit, stay, down and up but I do know about the potty training. If you want your pup to go outside, do not put down papers. He/she will get use to going on that and will not go outside.

Dog Health Questions: Can I get my dog into Police type training?

Ok, i'm getting a Caucasian Mountain Dog, and I would like to get him into obedience training and socialization for sure, but I also wanted to get him into police dog training. With the commands you can teach them to attack, protect, and various other techniques. I was wondering if this was even possible? or possibly how much would the first training along with the police training cost? Just an average for the two separately would be great. Dog Breed in Relation to Dog Training

I live in Denmark and I don't know how it works where you live, but I trained my first dog (a Belgian Shepherd Dog Tervueren) with the police dog club and they only took in certain breeds - as in many breeds were excluded from protection training, based on breed alone and a breed like yours would most likely be excluded.

The Caucasian Mountain Dog is not a breed for every one and requires not only a handler that knows exactly what he's doing, but also a handler that is extremely experienced with dogs. I got my first dog in the early 90s, I have an extensive knowledge about dogs and am a good dog handler, plus the breed of dog I have is not an easy breed and I would not take on a Caucasian Mountain Dog.

I hope you have done your homework regarding the breed and what it requires. This is in my opinion not a dog that many people can handle, it doesn't belong in cities, suburbs or even villages and, sorry, it's not a dog you should train attack- and protection dog techniques. That you are even inquiring about this is somewhat worrying, so I would urge you to read up some more on the breed and maybe reconsider if this is the right dog for you. There are other breeds that are less likely to turn into a liability and which are much more suited for police dog training.

What You Should Know About Dog Training Techniques

• It's possible, however you should go for the socialization and obedience training first. Only dogs that achieve the highest level of obedience should be considered for defense training. Otherwise you are likely to end up with an uncontrollable, aggressive dog that's more likely to injure friends or family than defend you against an armed robber.

  THEN..................YOU should NOT be letting strangers PET your DOG...........or you should have her muzzled. Obviously, YOU don't seem to have control over your DOG nor the people around YOU. You are still considered negligent, again lawsuit!!! I don't LET STRANGERS pet my SHEPHERDS when I'm out for a walk. YOU will still be held accountable for a dog you know that BITES!!!! AND again, if you lock your doors you should NOT be having ALL these intruders entering your house. As far as intruders entering your house, REALLY? I'd say LOCK your doors and windows!!!


• Isn't the fact that she's a pit bull mix enough to deter intruders? Do you have a big problem with people breaking into your home? Why in the world has she bitten and held back strangers many times?
  
  This breed (and any breed remotely resembling them) are being banned all across the globe because of people who encourage them to be aggressive when it is not in their nature.
  
  Perfectly wonderful, healthy pit bulls are put to sleep every day (6,000 a day in the US in 2007) because many city and county shelters are afraid (or not allowed) to adopt them out because of the breed's reputation.
  
  If your pit bull mix WERE to bite someone even if they are breaking in or threatening your life, there is a HUGE likelihood that she would be taken from you, deemed vicious euthanized and you would be held accountable.
  
  A couple of years ago a man broke into the home of the owner of a purebred American Staffordshire Terrier which was titled in utility obedience (the highest levels attainable) and a non-aggressive dog. At 2am, the family awoke to the intruder hitting the dog which in it's own defense, bit the intruder but did not cause a major injury at all.
  
  The intruder sued the owners, the case went to court, the highly trained Amstaff was held as evidence. The intruder won and the dog was ordered to be put down. A pit bull that bites someone or even threatens someone, no matter the circumstances is usually a dead pit bull.
  
  If you want to protect yourself buy an alarm system but do not encourage your dog to be aggressive towards humans. It makes the rest of us have to fight so much harder to repair their reputations.


• I own a very friendly pit bull(which is correct temperment for the breed). Even though he is very friendly, people still are wary of him. I wouldn't think you'd need to make your PB agressive, just his presence will put most people off.
  
  As to his unprovoked 'nipping', please get this under control! What if a child walks up to him on the street? If you look at the the part of a small child that is level with a pit bull size dogs mouth, it is the childs face.....
  
  If you want to feel safe, maybe you should take martial arts or self defense classes. Then you can defend youself even when you don't have your dog with you.

  Dogs see things differently and perceive them as threats even if you know it isn't. A friend thumping you playfully is the same as a stranger doing it, in the dogs eyes. How can you insure she doesn't go for him too? Or don't you mind your friends being attacked? Are you sure they won't take you to court?
  If you really loved her, you wouldn't want her on Death Row!
  Teach her anything but please, DON'T encourage what you can't control. If you love her, then learn to understand her and learn the difference between Guarding and Attacking!
  
  No pet owner should ever need to train a dog to guard them, even the tiniest breeds will try to.


• we are far from militant we are concerned dog owners. You are not showing good sense or responsiblity. Your dog should not nip at anyone without your consent and if she was a well trained gaurd dog they are to never bite or hold someone unless given a command to do so. Therefore your dog is not well trained and a liability. IF you are having such problems with strangers breaking in your home its time to move to a diffrent place and give that dog to some who can handle it. Get a stuffed gaurd dog that barks real loud when you trip the infared beam. Thats called an alarm. I own a Cane Corso/APBT mix and he doesnt bite anyone, he doesnt protect me and he never has growled at a person. I am so happy with this. He is a good specimen of a dog.

• Unfortunatly, because of the breeding history of the Pitbull it is unusual for them to be agressive to strangers. They have had a need to please humans bred into them. The nipping thing she does is highley unusual for the breed.

Well you should look for a schutzhund or French Ring club in your area and go get involved. You also say you want to rescue a dog well I wil say the chances you can find a dog with the right temperament for that type work would be like looking for a needle in a hay stack and you aren't even looking in the right hay stack.

First you would want a young dog with the correct temperament and you wont find that at a shelter or SPCA next you don't want someone dog that has issues from the old owner. You really need to find a reputable breeder that does these sports with there GSD or now all about these sports and breed for this type of work.

Anyways look for a club and go meet these people and ask them to help you find a proper dog, so you can start.

Searching For Cheap Dog Training Collars

• your dog will protect you should the need arise without the attack training. you are just asking for a law suit here especially with the GSD breed. However if you insist on this you look up one in your area and then call and enroll you and your dog. they will give you all the information necessary as all training establishments have different rules and regulations. Also with a rescue dog you have no idea what they have gone through in their past and this may not be the right thing to do with that type of dog. If you have never owned a GSD before, please do research on the breed before getting one. They are not the easiest dog to handle.

I do agree with Greek and Launi in that if a dog is coming at you in attack mode and may kill or maim you, the hanging method may be absolutely necessary, though. For me and my dogs, however, Koehler is not the trainer for me. I prefer Turid Rugaas and Linda Tellington-Jones.
