Dog Health Questions: I live in Canada and i want to study dog behaviour and become a trainer any ideas?

okay so i am 17, turning 18 in March. I'm very curious on where i can find places where i can get a degree or certificate of some sort to become a dog trainer and possibly a dog behaviourist (or simply study dogs).. i have no intentions to take a Vet Tech course, because that won't help me, but i am thinking on and off about taking it in College, but it's really undecided.

so does anyone in Canada know any places, or someone i can contact sometime soon to get some information on training and studying dog behaviour.

Thank you very much :)

p.s. i don't mean training in pet stores, i mean legit dog training.

Using a Good Dog Training Tip

Check here: http://www.casinstitute.com/dipabst.html

After I receive my degree in veterinary technology, I'm going to go for the Diploma of Animal Behavior Sciences and Technology. They had a diploma for nutrition and fitness for canines, but I don't know what happened to it.

To become a proper canine behaviorist, you must be a DVM. There are occasionally courses offered for veterinary technologists, as well as specialties, but for the average person I don't think there is anything beyond certificate courses and the like.

Good luck to you! : )

The Right Information Is the Key To Effective Dog Training - Dogproblems Reviewed

  • No degree or certificate needed - just tons of hands on work under a mentor and PROOF (IE dogs that are rehabbed or titled.) Classes and programs are generally useless. They focus on one or two methods and tend to poo-poo any others, which leaves you at a severe disadvantage.

You need to title some dogs, work with someone knowledgeable in the field, and get some experience with ALL methods in there. No classroom is going to give you that.

  • I used BarkBuster dog training program that was worked wonders on my dog. They are in several countries around the world and started in Australia. They have a program to become a trainer then you go to homes to teach dog owners how to stop dog problems. One big thing they did for us was teach us how to observe our dogs and see their signs of dominance, submissive, etc. It might be a great start at earning money in the field and can build on it with other programs or seminars to continue your learning.

  • I'm a dog trainer living in Canada. I took my studies through The Animal Behavior College. They are based in the US, but have a wonderful online program. They also have mentors all over Canada for their students to work with. http://www.animalbehaviorcollege.com

Dog Health Questions: Do dog shot documents say that they are the third shots or what so ever?

I got a new puppy and the owners didnt give her any shot documents and deworming documents he just said that her third shots are due dec. 11 i wanted to enroll my puppy in dog training school but she has to have shot papers. i am going to go get her third shots but i was wondering if they will give me documents saying that she has gotten shots. the owner didnt even tell me were he got the other two shots at and now he is telling me to take her to the humane society to get her shots. but i am still worried about not having the correct papers to enroll her to dog training.

Abused Dog Training - How to Train an Abused Dog

Recommended Answer:
I would be a little concerned that the person you bought the dog from refuses to give you the dogs shots documents. Ask where he had the shots done and then call the vet or clinic yourself and ask for copies of the records. If he doesn't give you the name of the vet or clinic I would go under the assumption that the dog didn't have any shots and this is why he is not giving you the documentation. Ask your vet what to do if this is the case and you aren't sure if he received all his shots or not. This seems a little strange to me.

Electronic Dog Training Collar

  • how about asking the previous owner where the vaccinations were performed .. having the previous owner call the veterinarian and inform him/her that you are now the owner of the dog .. and asking that veterinarian for paperwork proving vaccination?

  • the vet will re-do all the shots w/o proof the 1st to boosters were done.

You dealt with a bad breeder!!!

Dog Training Basics

  • There is different types of training available depending on what use you want for this dog. The Schutzhund program has a BH which is good to determine that your dog is of sound body and mind. It tests a dogs obedience and temporment. If they don't pass this test then they can not go forward.

Schutzhund is tracking, obedience and protection... depending on what you want it is a test the Germans developed to see the breed worthiness of the German Shepherd Dog.. altho any dog can get a Schutzhund title= If they can do the work = they can get the title. AKC has nothing at all to do with this.

Schutzhund has become a competitive sport for the working dog and the police dogs alike.

If you paid with a credit card, such as Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express, you can contact them and explain your problem. The credit card company will then explain to you what to do. I would also contact the Better Business Bureau and file a complaint against this company.

Dog Health Questions: Any tips on dog training?

I have a lab, bulldog, pit bull mix and he is a great dog. He listens to me and doesn't give me a hard time when walking him. I trained him myself he learned everything so quickly. its not him i need help with...my aunt gave my sister a mini cocker spaniel and she knows basic commands like sit and lay. but she barks so much...at every little noise and person. and when i walk her with my dog she doesn't walk normally she runs and pulls. does anyone know how to stop the barking at every little thing and how to get her to walk normally.
help is greatly appreciated because my sister is physically disabled and i want the dog to listen to her and our neighbors complained about the barking. i don't want to have to give the dog away if i don't have to. my sister is only 3 and i don't want her dog taken from her even though the dog will probably go back to my aunt.

Dog Training Aids - Do You Know How Safe The Methods Used For Dog Obedience Training Are?

    Recommended Answer:
For the barking, you need to interrupt it. Say NO NOISE when she barks. If you are right there, correct her with a little push or leash correction. Sometimes just getting them away from the thing that they are barking at can help. Keeping her away from windows and doors can help too. Keep her inside (preferably in a crate or windowless room) when you are gone or can't watch her.

For the pulling, when you are on a walk and she pulls, change direction quickly. Do this every time she pulls. She will learn not the pull. You can also do some work in the house. Get a 6ft leash and put it around you waist (put the clip through the handle, clip it to the dog and put it around your waist), so this for at least 2 hours a day (cooking dinner, doing dishes etc). She will learn to respect your movements (and your sisters). Running around obstacles (poles, trees etc) can help too.

Your whole family needs to do these things. The dog may end up listening to you and nobody else. Do not bribe this dog (no treats, balls, toys, clickers for training), this will just get the dog to listen to a treat and not a person.

    The Evolution of Dog Training

    • I would get her a bark collar, you can get them around 30 bucks and I would get her a Halti for her pulling

    • u never be able to tame your dog so just get a dog trainer or get a dog whisperer

Dog Health Questions: Can I get my dog into Police type training?

Ok, i'm getting a Caucasian Mountain Dog, and I would like to get him into obedience training and socialization for sure, but I also wanted to get him into police dog training. With the commands you can teach them to attack, protect, and various other techniques. I was wondering if this was even possible? or possibly how much would the first training along with the police training cost? Just an average for the two separately would be great. Thanks for reading/answering my question.

Dog Breed in Relation to Dog Training

    Recommended Answer:
I live in Denmark and I don't know how it works where you live, but I trained my first dog (a Belgian Shepherd Dog Tervueren) with the police dog club and they only took in certain breeds - as in many breeds were excluded from protection training, based on breed alone and a breed like yours would most likely be excluded.

The Caucasian Mountain Dog is not a breed for every one and requires not only a handler that knows exactly what he's doing, but also a handler that is extremely experienced with dogs. I got my first dog in the early 90s, I have an extensive knowledge about dogs and am a good dog handler, plus the breed of dog I have is not an easy breed and I would not take on a Caucasian Mountain Dog.

I hope you have done your homework regarding the breed and what it requires. This is in my opinion not a dog that many people can handle, it doesn't belong in cities, suburbs or even villages and, sorry, it's not a dog you should train attack- and protection dog techniques. That you are even inquiring about this is somewhat worrying, so I would urge you to read up some more on the breed and maybe reconsider if this is the right dog for you. There are other breeds that are less likely to turn into a liability and which are much more suited for police dog training.

What You Should Know About Dog Training Techniques

    • It's possible, however you should go for the socialization and obedience training first. Only dogs that achieve the highest level of obedience should be considered for defense training. Otherwise you are likely to end up with an uncontrollable, aggressive dog that's more likely to injure friends or family than defend you against an armed robber.

If you and your dog do well in classes you'll then be on the grapevine for good trainers in your area. Try and cut corners and you could end up with some idiot who thinks training your dog to be aggressive is the way to go. It isn't. Police dogs are not genuinely aggressive when working: they are trained to bark etc on command AND to let go and be calm in an instant.

    • you really dont have any need for a dog that is trained to attack. That would be a good way to get your @$$ sued and have your dog taken away and destroyed.

If you feel extra need for protection, get a security system, a gun, carry mace and take a self defence class.

Police dog training is for police dogs, which will be handled by experienced police dog handlers.

    • With the proper Training you can do a lot but you need to continue the training at home too
there are may training schools that specialize in these types of training but they are a bit pricey.
You can start the basic training process at home.

      http://www.lotsofpets.com/dogs-dog-train…

    • Yes, it's possible with about $10,000. If you want to train him yourself, not for personal protection, but for ultimate obedience, look into schutzhund training. A couple friends of mine work their dogs this way and it's great for them and for the dogs.

Dog Health Questions: How Do I Get My German Shepherd Into Attack Dog Training?

I more so want it for myself. I don't yet have my dog but I am doing my research.
I live in Austin Texas and want to know how much, where, and what age I should get them in.

My aim is to rescue a 3 or younger dog as well so would this have conflict on his training?

Puppy Dog Training For Obedience - How To Train Your Dog Puppy Properly

    Recommended Answer:
Well you should look for a schutzhund or French Ring club in your area and go get involved. You also say you want to rescue a dog well I wil say the chances you can find a dog with the right temperament for that type work would be like looking for a needle in a hay stack and you aren't even looking in the right hay stack.

First you would want a young dog with the correct temperament and you wont find that at a shelter or SPCA next you don't want someone dog that has issues from the old owner. You really need to find a reputable breeder that does these sports with there GSD or now all about these sports and breed for this type of work.

Anyways look for a club and go meet these people and ask them to help you find a proper dog, so you can start.

Searching For Cheap Dog Training Collars

    • your dog will protect you should the need arise without the attack training. you are just asking for a law suit here especially with the GSD breed. However if you insist on this you look up one in your area and then call and enroll you and your dog. they will give you all the information necessary as all training establishments have different rules and regulations. Also with a rescue dog you have no idea what they have gone through in their past and this may not be the right thing to do with that type of dog. If you have never owned a GSD before, please do research on the breed before getting one. They are not the easiest dog to handle.

    • Sorry being single doesn't cut it. Even if you were with someone there would be times you would be on your own.

That said a rescue dog is not going to cut it and I can guarantee no rescue will give you a dog knowing your plans. You also cannot train the dog yourself. A reliable protection/guard dog is one who has been both bred and trained properly. The average GSD neither has the drive or temperament for that sort of training.

As for how much? Several grand. The training is not cheap.

    • Hey I can see you may need some sort of guide that will give you tips and tricks to help your dog become fully trained and more healthy. Recently one of my friends needed some advice how to train her dog, she followed the dog training academy course to successfully have a full trained dog in a matter of a few weeks.

    • Are you looking for a dog training guide that will give you some tips and tricks to help your dog become fully trained and have better manners? My brother needed the same type of help to train his dog and he followed the dog training academy course to successfully train his dog in a few weeks.

    • A better idea would be to take some self defense classes, get an alarm, and a gun permit. An 'attack' dog is nothing but a liability, and most homeowners policies will not even cover certain breeds (GSDs included). If you're talking about personal protection training, then that's tens of thousands of dollars to get a dog (the right dog, not a local BYBred one) fully and properly trained

    • YOU don't.

To get a fully trained Schutzhund dog, you will have to spend tens of thousands of dollars.

it is not something you can do yourself, and it is not something to do with a RESCUE dog..

If you want protection, get pepper spray, a base ball bat, and a security system. Not a dog.

    • Hey {askername} I see that you need some sort of guide that will give you tips and tricks to help your dog become fully trained and more healthy. Dog Health Questions: Dog Training Academy info?

I live in the St Louis area, and I'm looking into getting into dog training (maybe for search and rescue, I think), and I'm looking for a good dog training academy. I'm aware that there are bound to be the people out here that will be completely against any kind of dog training, even if it's to save lives, but I'm hoping that there might be others that are a little more reasonable.
Also, my Goldie is already almost a year and my Boxer is probably not going to be the most effective dog for this kind of thing, even though she's only 5 months old (she's great, i love her to death, but I'm a realist). What's good? Malinois, Shepherds, Bloodhounds?

Dog Training Basics: 3 Golden Rules

    Recommended Answer:
I took a few courses in dog training. One of which was in the us. The animal behavior college. They have a very good program online, and working with a mentor. It's mostly training you to be an obedience trainer but its a good start and will help you along. They can also refer you to courses you can take in search and rescue training.
    Best of luck!
