I got a new puppy and the owners didnt give her any shot documents and deworming documents he just said that her third shots are due dec. 11 i wanted to enroll my puppy in dog training school but she has to have shot papers. i am going to go get her third shots but i was wondering if they will give me documents saying that she has gotten shots. the owner didnt even tell me were he got the other two shots at and now he is telling me to take her to the humane society to get her shots. but i am still worried about not having the correct papers to enroll her to dog training.

I would be a little concerned that the person you bought the dog from refuses to give you the dogs shots documents. Ask where he had the shots done and then call the vet or clinic yourself and ask for copies of the records. If he doesn't give you the name of the vet or clinic I would go under the assumption that the dog didn't have any shots and this is why he is not giving you the documentation. Ask your vet what to do if this is the case and you aren't sure if he received all his shots or not. This seems a little strange to me.

• The site is cluttered, but the videos are ok. I watched part of the 'walking on leash' video, and the guy tried to get his dog's attention by calling him over and over. Good way to desensitize the dog to his name.
  
  As someone else suggested, it's best to train in person with someone. Your pups will act much differently than the dogs in the videos, and when they do, the video won't be there to advise - a person will.

Dog Health Questions: Is there a way I could train my dog to be off leash in 6 days besides working with him every day like I do.?

Ok well im in dog training for 4h to be in the dog show and my instructor said that by the 2nd week of dog training we have to be ready to be off leash. My dog is a Australian shepherd mixed boarder collie and hes 3 or 4 years old.

Your instructor must be really, really new at dog training. And he's going to have a huge mess on his hands if he seriously thinks a group of dogs are ready to work off-leash by the 2nd week of training!

Reliable off-leash work takes much, much longer to train. I sure hope these dogs are all in a building or behind a secure fence and he's insured for damage caused by dog fights.

  My dog has never been to any dog training classes, and we haven't done much work with him at home. Granted he jumps up a lot and barks to get attention, he is going to join a training class. But he is controllable off the lead easy. We always take him on walks where there are lots of other dogs, but he always comes back when we call, stays when you want him, if there is a car coming you can call him over and keep him out of the way :) xx


• Walking Lady has it right....holy moly....I have never heard of a training instructor that even THINKS about the *possibility* of a little off-leash work without at least 8 weeks of training.
  
  And that's usually in an intermediate class where students & dogs have a good foundation. And the transition to off-leash is slow, gradual and cautious. I've always started by transitioning to nylon clothesline leashes & working up to thinner and shorter lead material. The dog gets accustomed to the feeling of not being leashed but you're still able to give corrections when you're proofing the training with distractions, etc.
  
  Going off-leash too soon can be a huge setback in training. If you don't have 100% control on-leash, and you go off-leash all of a sudden, your dog learns that you *cannot* control him off-leash and he does not have to obey you.
  
  You likely have a very biddable & trainable dog if he is BC/Aussie, but still.....he is also a SMART dog and will figure out quickly that you're not "the boss" when he's off leash.
  
  I would speak with your instructor in private and try to find out details about what he expects, and how he expects you to accomplish it....
  
  If he's just saying, "Yep, in two weeks, you've all got to show up with dogs who can work off-leash"....and he's not going to offer instructions on HOW to do this......do NOT, absolutely do NOT put any pressure on yourself, or your dog.
  
  To take a dog from beginner to OFF LEASH in two weeks is wildly unreasonable- to attempt it is unfair to your dog & will only frustrate you. If you cannot reason with the trainer it's better for your dog to remove her from this activity & find a more constructive outlet for her such as Agility.
  
  ***ADD: To Mel Jel, your dog sounds naturally biddable & owner-oriented which is largely the exception to the rule. Many, many dogs are more strongly driven to chase, sniff and otherwise explore the world, than they are to obey their owner's call. Teaching such a dog that sitting & staying by your side is more rewarding than chasing a bunny, playing with another dog or sniffing the amazing scents all around him is a difficult process.
  
  In a class setting with multiple dogs, chances are more dogs will be of the "chase & sniff" mindset, rather than the "I live to please my owner" mindset. Furthermore, we're not just talking about a dog who "comes when called" off-leash....this is a "dog show" where a dog will be expected to follow a series of precise behaviors off-leash. Teaching a dog to do exactly as he's told 100% of the time without a leash to control him is NOT something that happens quickly.

Dog Health Questions: Any tips on dog training?

I have a lab, bulldog, pit bull mix and he is a great dog. He listens to me and doesn't give me a hard time when walking him. I trained him myself he learned everything so quickly. its not him i need help with...my aunt gave my sister a mini cocker spaniel and she knows basic commands like sit and lay. but she barks so much...at every little noise and person. and when i walk her with my dog she doesn't walk normally she runs and pulls. does anyone know how to stop the barking at every little thing and how to get her to walk normally.

For the barking, you need to interrupt it. Say NO NOISE when she barks. If you are right there, correct her with a little push or leash correction. Sometimes just getting them away from the thing that they are barking at can help. Keeping her away from windows and doors can help too. Keep her inside (preferably in a crate or windowless room) when you are gone or can't watch her.

For the pulling, when you are on a walk and she pulls, change direction quickly. Do this every time she pulls. She will learn not the pull. You can also do some work in the house. Get a 6ft leash and put it around you waist (put the clip through the handle, clip it to the dog and put it around your waist), so this for at least 2 hours a day (cooking dinner, doing dishes etc). She will learn to respect your movements (and your sisters). Running around obstacles (poles, trees etc) can help too.

Your whole family needs to do these things. The dog may end up listening to you and nobody else. Do not bribe this dog (no treats, balls, toys, clickers for training), this will just get the dog to listen to a treat and not a person.

• I don't see why he has to put the dog down.Your dog wasn't socialized enuf,keeping them separated is not only hard but only to make matters worse.Try walking on leashes together apart,letting each smell others scents.This may take a few weeks.Gradually get closer.Don't leave them alone with eachother even after you think they get along.It may take months before they become friends.It also matters if they are fixed,same sexes don't get along to well especially when not spayed/neutered.

Dog Health Questions: Dog Training Academy info?

I live in the St Louis area, and I'm looking into getting into dog training (maybe for search and rescue, I think), and I'm looking for a good dog training academy. I'm aware that there are bound to be the people out here that will be completely against any kind of dog training, even if it's to save lives, but I'm hoping that there might be others that are a little more reasonable.
Also, my Goldie is already almost a year and my Boxer is probably not going to be the most effective dog for this kind of thing, even though she's only 5 months old (she's great, i love her to death, but I'm a realist). What's good? Malinois, Shepherds, Bloodhounds?
