Dog Health Questions: My dog has a severe growling problem?

She is a pomeranian about 5 almost 6 pounds and now its to the point to where when i say "STOP" she doesn't stop anymore its not barking at all just growling and it is getting worse and worse so i want to buy a shock collar but im afraid that it wont work even if i do get the shock collar because they are more for barking dogs. she no longer growls at something specific she just growls at birds , people walking next door (we live in a duplex) she growls at the wind , rain etc My question is WILL a shock collar stop her growling?

• You have to be very careful using a shock collar on small dogs as it can actually stop their heart if you don't use one that is specifically made for small dogs. Do a lot of research and talk to a knowledgeable veterinarian before trying this. If it were my dog, I would try someother methods first, as these "shock" methods can sometimes frighten small dogs and make them worse. Research books and web sites on dog training. Teaching Your Dogs The Basics Of Dog Training

• Olay - you do realise that there was probably a reason why these two lost their previous home - and you are probably finding out what that reason was!!
  
  So back to puppy training one.
  
  Every hour (even with the adult) get them out. After every nap, every feed, and so on. You may, once you get to know their habits, be able to quickly extend the outside visits to 2 hours, and longer, but for starters you need to break the going everywhere habit.
  
  Get two crates and crate them overnight. Dogs don't normally, provided there are no health issues (and you need to make sure this isn't the case) mess in their beds, so make their crates their beds. Cover the top and three sides, and leave the door open during the day, and shut them in over night. And if they do mess, feed them in there - even more, dogs don't normally mess where they eat. The healthy dog shouldn't need to pass a stool more than 4 times a day, when on two meals a day. Digestion usually takes 4 hours so feed them no later than 5 pm and exercise them before bedtime so they are empty (stools). Peeing might be more difficult as obviously they will pee more frequently than they have a BM. Obviously if they have upset tummies, they will not be able to not pooh overnight. So make sure they don't have a reason for needing to pooh.
  
  Rescued dogs always come with 'baggage', things they were doing with their previous owners that may not fit with what you want. So you have to not only train, but retrain. Be consistent with what you want them to do. Forget about the specialists - all this is totally down to you and how effective you are with these two. Training classes might help you to learn how to handle them however.
  
  Keep calm, be assertive and consistent and eventually you will get through to these two.
  
  Add - You can, and probably should with these two, lift the water overnight, if they are not crated. Mine don't have, or need water, overnight (they are crated) - witness they don't charge at the bowl when the get up each morning by any means!!

  get small crates- one for each... they should only have enough room in the crate to go in, turn around and lay down. They need to be in the kennel when you can't watch them- and when they are out- they are not out of sight. use set feeding times- if they graze all day- who know when the call of mother nature will strike.
  also- see you vet- for an adopt exam- make sure there is not underlying medcial reason and that is why they were at the pound.... IE; intestional parasites, bladder infection, bladder stones, kidney issues. Only one might have a problem and the other dog is just following the "pack"

My dad told me this trick once and I've always remembered it. Put out a ton of newspapers on the floor, make sure the floor is fully covered with the newspapers. You may have to play with her a bit to entice her take it but they make an amazingly effective chew toy and nobody cares if the dog chews it to shreds.
  My Puppy Kindergarten students are told about this as a teething aid and they report back the pups keep using them into adulthood as a toy. You can also teach her to use ice cubes or bouillon cubes.


• We had the same problem with our rug, and even though our dog was crate trained, we didn't want to keep her locked up while we were gone for 6-8 hours. The solution - bitter apple spray on the rug. After a few applications she got the idea.

  First off- put things of importance away or up where she cannot reach them.
  
  Secondly, if it's only your things- then it's probably happening when you aren't with her and she's left alone.
  My weim does that with me- that's because he has separation anxiety and I'm the one he's bonded with.
  
  It takes time and love- and you have to modify your own behavior (like putting your clothes away and not on the floor)- and maybe get her some kongs or other toys to play with instead. :)

• The site is cluttered, but the videos are ok. I watched part of the 'walking on leash' video, and the guy tried to get his dog's attention by calling him over and over. Good way to desensitize the dog to his name.
  
  As someone else suggested, it's best to train in person with someone. Your pups will act much differently than the dogs in the videos, and when they do, the video won't be there to advise - a person will.

Dog Health Questions: Dog training making dog frustrated?

Hey everyone
our dog trainer came round today and he taught us some good stuff
he showed us something called a security lead
it is a lead that you tie to a door and it gives the dog a few feet of lead to lie and move a bit
our dog just laid perfectly for the hour, no problems the trainer would say stop if he barked and he gave him a treat and he stopped
he was perfect
then he went
we put him on it and another person came round, we did what we did when the trainer came, introduced them the right way (no jumping) and it just kept barking and barking and barking
we said stop, waited for him to stop and gave him a treat, then he would bark
the friend left and as instructed we did not let him in the lounge to stop him feeling dominant
he is outside on the security lead now
and he is still barking and barking, the treats are just making it worse as he has figured out that if he barks and then stops we give him treats
so we ignore him
but still he is barking?
what are we doing wrong?
we are doing what he said to do?

I'm not quite sure what a security lead is, but I'll try to help anyways.

The way I get my dogs to stop barking is with a command word "Enough". If they stop barking, I simply pat their head of scratch their ear. Treats are over rated and dogs will figure out that they can get treats if they're good, but they can misbehave once they have their treat.

Also, I recommend a shock collar. With a shock collar, you can stop the dog from barking without actually touching it. Here's how:

1. Once you have the collar on, leave the dog alone. Once she starts barking, go to her, and give her a command word that you want her to associate with not barking. I use the word "Enough" or "No". If she listens, praise her. Since she's figured out the treats, don't use them.

2. If she stopped barking with the command word, turn and begin to walk away. If she starts barking, stop, turn around (don't go back to her), and give the command word. If she doesn't listen, hit the shock and give the command word again. She will learn that she either listens to you, or she will be shocked. She will also associate the command word with not barking and being shocked if she doesn't listen.

3. Once you've shocked the dog, begin to walk away. If she barks still, repeat step 2. If she stops barking after you shock her, leave her alone.

You will have to work with her for a little while, but this shouldn't take more than two weeks to correct completely. Hope this helps.

You need to find a trainer who will treat his issues head-on and not just cover the issues up by tethering the dog. I suggest an obedience class if you aren't already in one because structured training can work for many issues as the dog learns to interact better with humans and their commands. A class will also help socialize the dog with other people and animals.


• You need to put a command word when you tell him to stop. "Stop" isn't telling your dog much of anything. When he barks, tell him "no bark" and when he stops as you are feeding him his treat say "good no bark". Dogs need feedback when you are training, and if they don't get any that they understand they will either tune you out, or continue what you do not want them to do.
