Dog Health Questions: What should we do with our old (16 year old) dog?

We have a 16 year old black lab who is healthy apart from a bit of arthritis. He is living in the garden (has been doing so for about three years now with no problems) and we reacently (between the three years) aquired several cats after a relative died. They are all house cats, and do not go outside. As two of them are rescue cats they are easily startled, and even the dog near the house unsettles them.

The reason the dog was put in the garden was that he kept destroying the house when we were out despite dog training, and was badly behaved when walking him, which was a nightmare. Alothough when he was younger it was some-what bareable taking him it, now that he is old he can barely even walk down to the park, let alone with the stress of getting there.

Reacently he has started barking and howling day and night, annoying the neighbours. We have given him toys and treats for him to play with, and even tried to allow him in the house for a night or two just so we can sleep and not disturb our neighbours (we put him in our daughters room while she was away on holiday - but we can not do this again since she is back).

We can not have the dog in the house, both due to the cats and because of his bad behaviour.

We know that this is not an excuse or reason to have him put to sleep, but would it not be a kinder solution than this current state?

Your poor dog, who grew up in a family home, is stuck outside in your yard - alone. You don't walk him, and he is in pain from his Arthritis.
If I was him, I would bark and howl too. He is bored and lonely.

What you need to do is bring him back into your home, along with rules and guidelines that everyone in your family knows and enforces in a consistent manner.

Walking:
-------
The first thing you MUST do is to walk him. Even if it just a few hundred meters a day. Get up in the morning, walk your dog around the block. He NEEDS this vital stimulation to keep him mentally and physically healthy.
To train him properly on a leash, use a check-chain. Hold the end of the leash in your right hand, while holding the leash in your left hand to control the walking position of your dog. If the leash is taut, pull it upwards above his head to stop him from pulling(keep doing this until the he stops pulling - it may take multiple walks). Make sure your dog is walking beside your left foot.

When you arrive at the park(if you go that far) do not just let him off the leash because he's pulling and you can't bother disciplining him! Stand in front of him, make him sit and hold his collar as you remove the check-chain. Tell him 'Wait' in a firm voice and hold his collar until he relaxes in the sit position. Once he is relaxed, loosen your grip on his collar and slowly move your hand away. If he tries to bolt, catch his collar, make him sit and tell him 'Wait'. Repeat this until you can stand in front of him, hands by your side. Then praise him, give him a treat and encourage him to run.
Letting him off the leash as soon as you can only teaches him that pulling = free play.

Only feed your dog after returning from a walk(even a short walk). This will make your dog feel as though he has earned his food and reinforce instinctual pack mentality. You should always be the leader of your pack, never your dog.
When you place your dog's bowl on the floor, use the 'Wait' technique, the same as you would at the park. This will help to keep him calm at feeding times, and reinforce your position as pack leader.

All dogs respond differently to different forms of punishment - yelling should never be used as a form of punishment. Yelling will only scare, excite and encourage barking in your dog. One very effective method of punishment is the 'Alpha Bite' which is a mimic of the way pack leaders punish dogs in the wild. When your dog misbehaves, growl at him, grip his neck with your hand(firmly, but not roughly) and continue growling. He should naturally fall onto his back in a submissive position. Do this whenever he misbehaves and he will soon begin to submit even after hearing a growl from you.

General Calming Techniques

Your dog should never be over-excited or hyper. Most dogs go crazy when people come to the door, or when you return from work/going out. The best way to teach your dog to be calm is by ignoring him when you return home. If he jumps up at you, turn away from him. If he is being badly behaved, think to yourself 'I do not have a dog right now' and act as if he is not there. Without any kind of reaction from you - he will quickly calm.
To teach him not to react to the doorbell, wait until he is calm inside the house - then ring the doorbell and knock on the door. Then act as though nothing is happening. He will quickly learn to ignore the doorbell.

All of the behaviour problems that you have listed stem from a lack of stimulation(walking). So the first thing you need to do is train him to behave on walks. This means walking him EVERY DAY. Once he is being walked every day, he will become much calmer and most of his destructive behaviour will stop.

You brought this dog into your home, and he is your responsibility. From what you have said, it sounds like he is being neglected - and your response to this is to have him put down? The buck stops with you.
A dog does not understand 'good' and 'bad' he only acts in the ways that you have taught him, or allowed him to act. Firm, consistent training along with regular stimulation is the answer. If you cannot care for your dog, if you don't have the energy and determination to teach him how to behave - then find him a new home.

If you can't deal with the problems he causes then that would be your very best bet. Don't put him to sleep if he isn't in a dying state. Put ads in the paper, take him to a nearby humane society. He will more than likely not change his behavior, and he is getting very old and needs lots of attention and care. • no a better solution is finding him a home where he can be inside or not annoy neighbors. putting him to sleep right now is kinda strange when there are plenty of people who may take him...see if a vet can give him something to take at night that may calm him and for pain. You may have to play with her a bit to entice her take it but they make an amazingly effective chew toy and nobody cares if the dog chews it to shreds.
  My Puppy Kindergarten students are told about this as a teething aid and they report back the pups keep using them into adulthood as a toy. You can also teach her to use ice cubes or bouillon cubes.


• We had the same problem with our rug, and even though our dog was crate trained, we didn't want to keep her locked up while we were gone for 6-8 hours. The solution - bitter apple spray on the rug. After a few applications she got the idea.

  First off- put things of importance away or up where she cannot reach them.
  
  Secondly, if it's only your things- then it's probably happening when you aren't with her and she's left alone.
  My weim does that with me- that's because he has separation anxiety and I'm the one he's bonded with.
  
  It takes time and love- and you have to modify your own behavior (like putting your clothes away and not on the floor)- and maybe get her some kongs or other toys to play with instead. :)

I only ask because we have this new school of dog training out that says the alpha concept is now all wrong. Seems like some of us like to buy wholesale into whatever the newest and greatest thing is. At some point people who developed their own school school of dog training that they wanted to market to the masses made a name for themselves by associating the alpha/pack structure concepts with cruelty and physical pain. They say they found a newer and better way where a dog never has to be corrected for bad behavior. The proponents of 'love, peace, and flower-power' dog training say Ceasar Milan is barbaric and uses cruel methods that he hides from the cameras. Victoria Stillwell, who shows total disdain for the alpha concept, is cited over and over again. Despite the fact that her show, like every other dog training show out there, sets out to teach humans how to make dogs follow their rules and obey their commands. And oh, by the way, Ceasar is known to tackle true problem dogs with genuine aggression problems, the types of animals who will eat a handler for breakfast if he makes wrong move. Victoria Stillwell does an AWESOME job... at teaching people how to potty train their poodles. And to keep the frisky, lovable family Golden Retriever in a down/stay when visitors knock on the door so he doesn't knock grandma down. I wonder how she would handle a dog/aggressive, handler/aggressive 120 pound rotteiler. Somehow the pack structure/alpha concept has come to be made synonymous with animal cruelty.   take a westie i had from a rescue centre raise your voice she would pee herself with fear from the obvious betting she received from the scares she has, so a gentle soft approach was needed with lots of soft verbal commands.

Dog Training Devices - How Using One Can Help Correct Stubborn Dog Training Problems

You can train your dog using positive training techniques without resorting to force. I have a challenging cross breed terrier that we got from a rescue center as an adolescent. We got to the root causes of his behavior addressed those and then implemented a training routine.

I would personally recommend Dr Ian Dunbar, he is a vet and an extraordinary teacher. He teaches with a sense of humor as well which you will find you will need to keep you going at some points.

I have seen Casar Milan and he is undoubtedly very talented but I do not agree with some of his methods. In my opinion you should learn what you can from peoples teachings and disregard the things that you do not agree with. Take a look at Casar's website and subscribe to his newsletter and look up Dr Ian Dunbar on You Tube.

I would go with Dr Ian Dunbar but that is my personal preference.

Dog Training Basics - Avoid These Five Common Mistakes

• I don't like Cesar's training methods. I would never buy any of his books or videos.


• I don't have the training dvds but I have his show on DVD, it's amazing and you can learn a lot just from that so his training DVD's are probably amazing!

  EDIT- I think those of you who dislike Cesar are just plain stupid or jealous one!! Understanding dogs & their behavior & body language is the key to training them...that goes with any animal...they can not speak our language, but we do of course have the ability to speak theirs!! His methods are actually quit simple & completely natural.
  
  You are all just haters in my eyes, who probably have horribly trained dogs. I hate critics & I think if you don't like the show then don't watch it....& don't tell someone else a bunch of B.S. because of your own opinions.


• I thnk Cesar Milan does a good job of explaining dog training. While I haven't seen the dvd's, I've seen his program on TV and agree with most of his solutions. However, mostly he deals with problems and not training from the start.
  
  If you are just looking for some basic obedience training, find a good dog training class in your area and sign up. They often adress some common behavioral issues.
  
  My own preference are the teachings of Dr. Ian Dunbar and Sirius Puppy Training. I've included a link below. There is also a section on solving some issues.


• Cesar Millan is a great dog trainer. His specialty is rehabilitating extreme "red zone" cases where dogs are very aggressive, dominant, etc... Cesar often rehabilitates dogs whose only other option would have been euthanasia.
  
  I think his books and DVD's are great. If you're getting a new pup or have an adult dog who needs some training, Cesar's tips can be very helpful. He has a very good understanding of dog psychology and pack dynamics.
  
  NOTE to those who dislike Cesar. If all you've seen is his tv show then all you've seen is how he works with extreme cases. These are dogs that other trainers gave up on - that other trainers said to euthanize. He uses a lot of positive reinforcement and emphasizes discipline (rules, boundaries, and limitations) NOT punishment. Dogs are pack animals who need rules. He also emphasizes properly exercising a dog. Bored, under-exercised dogs often get into trouble and become destructive.


• His training methods are outdated and barbaric. In his books he actually states he doesn't believe in obedience training. That is crazy! If you ask any real trainer they do not agree with his methods. The only thing I agree with is that exercise should come first and unexercised dogs act out.
  
  Take your dog to a real obedience class or check a book out from the library.
  
  Look into Victoria Stillwell if you want a TV celebrity. She uses positive reinforcement training methods.

• I really think an obedience class would help a lot. You will have somebody right there to tell you what you're doing right, what you're doing wrong, and they can answer any questions you have. It's definately a good place to start.


• Shih tzu's love to please and all dogs can be trained "stupid" or "smart". The first thing you need to find out is what motivates him, it could be a toy or food treats. If your dog likes food treats I recommend cutting them into tiny little bite size pieces.
  
  Shih tzu's are pretty well mannered so most don't really need a lot of obedience training. Remember though you don't want to bribe your dog into doing commands make sure to give treats only randomly after he learns the commands.


• While he was young you should have trained to do what you want him to do. If you're letting him in you're house, then if he makes pee somewhere for a short time for example he makes pee for 2 secs. , then he's just marking his territory.

Dog Health Questions: Gun dog training tips, i need help with my 3 1/2 month old yellow lab. Help?

i have a 3 1/2 month old pup and when i play fetch with her she just walks to the toy and sometimes i need to push her to go. What do i do? And what do i say when i want her to fetch, do i say her name or what? Also i need tips on how to train her to heal.

• get her attention with the toy, like tease her and wave it in her face. throw it, if she get's it praise her alot.


• Nail the basic commands first. Sit, stay, here. Usually when you send her to retrieve, you say the dogs name first then the send or fetch command. When she retrieves, call her back, then say "dead" for her to drop the bird at your feet. Takes a lot of effort & work, but my uncle had a champion gun dog... it's great to watch them work, they live for it. Best of luck.

Dog Health Questions: Convince dad to get dog training. help please!?

i have a 13 month old black lab who has had absolutely NO formal training. Ever since he was 6 months old i have asked my dad to enroll him in some classes or call a trainer home. he has flat out refused.

He told me to train the dog, so i have tried the best i can. he is perfect with me, sit, heel, down, stay all mastered, but around other people he misbehaves and has no manners at all. He is just not the dog you want to be around, and he bothers the crap out of company, irritating everyone.

Then my dad gets pissed at me b/c IM not training him. This my (our?) first dog! i have almost no clue what im doing. My dad says he grew up with dogs who were all perfect without any formal training, but i simply have almost no idea what im doing!

When i ask my dad why he cant get formal training, my dad says, "because its too expensive and you can train him yourself" MY DADS A FRIGGIN DOCTOR. AND MY MOM. he has enough money to buy $10,000 sofas and armani suits but not train the dog!

This is not fair to me or the dog. he is constantly being yelled at. He deserves MUCH better than this! its not fair! i am seriously considering finding a new home for him. any advice on that if it goes that far?

my father is not someone who you can sit down and talk to. he just scares me so much, that i lose my train of thought and end up babbling like a lunatic. If i tell him something he doesnt want to hear, he gets pissed. he will however, listen to what OTHER people tell him. e.g- his friend.

A correctly trained dog is a much better pet and a safer one. If your dad is yelling at the dog that only teaches a dog to fear you. It doesn't teach it good behavior.

• hi.. i dont think u need classes if your dog already know the basics. read up on the internet for more help. we have 2 dogs here who are 3 and 4 but both very hyper. sometimes we have to muzzle them to calm them down when we have company. within 5 minutes they change their attitudes and simmer down. i dont like the muzzles but that is the only thing we have found to work for us. in your case, maybe spend more time with the stay and down commands. i think your dog is very lucky to have someone like u who obviously loves him very much. please try some other remedies before considering finding him another home.

  I would also suggest your family get involved and start teaching him to obey them as well. If he respects them and listens to them, it will be a big step forward, but it may be difficult if your parents are not willing to put in the time and work. Not every dog is perfect, and it sounds like your family doesn't want to admit that (trust me--been there with my family) but they must admit there is a problem and work to fix it. Otherwise, they are hanging the dog out to dry and setting him up for failure.

Liver bait for ones you make. REASON: Healthy and Economic and easy to make
LIVER TREATS

1 lb. beef liver
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 cup cornmeal
2 eggs
Puree liver in food processor. Add eggs, whole wheat flour and cornmeal. Grease cookie sheet and pour mixture onto cookie sheet. Bake in 350 oven for 20 minutes, flipping over halfway through baking. Cut into desired sized squares.

I usually place 1/2 of this recipe in a tupperware and keep in the fridge. The other half I freeze.......these freeze well.

Find Out How You Could Get Into Dog Training As A Career

• Small training treats, try different ones, and see which ones your puppy prefers. Don't get treats that are big and take a while to chew down. Some training treats you have to split into pieces.


• all kinds of stuff...why would you not just buy it thoug, unless you have so much spare time to make it.
  The only thing you have to watch out for is rawhyde, some dogs don't react well to it, esp puppies. I would soft treats that are easy to chew...they have tons of "puppy specific" treats...just go to pet smart


• best bet is to try a couple of different treats to see what kind the dog likes the best and that will help in training him. My dog likes a bunch of different kinds so I switch it up a lot. Good luck


• Just remember to use little, little pieces. I like shredded cheese. Just a few (2-3) pieces at a time is enough.

• when i was in 4H my dog trainer always had us used dehydrated hot dogs. Their cheap and easy to make and the dogs LOVE them. All you have to do is buy a package of hot dogs, cut them up in small peices and put them in a food dehydrator (if you dont have a dehydrator just put them in the microwave) good luck!!


• For home and in low distraction areas I use soft, high-quality treats that I buy at the pet shop. For puppy class and high-distraction areas, I use low-fat chicken sausage cut in small pieces (I get about 40-60 treats out of one sausage), sometimes mixed with a single slice of chopped up cheese.
  
  Tiny dried liver treats are also good for high-distraction, you can make these yourself by buying calf-liver, chopping it up and drying it in the oven (low heat).
  
  The reason I use different treats is to get the maximum focus and attention from my puppy.


• Different dogs like different foods. You could buy the most expensive, tastiest food in the world and your dog may not like it.
  Bull dogs are greedy little things, they eat anything so I don't think you will have any problems in finding a treat which he likes.
  Bull dogs are quite powerful dogs so I may recommend giving him a treat which is quite tough, like a pig's ear or those hard teeth cleaning bones.(When he's older of cause).
  
  If you are training the little guy to do something then I recommend giving him small treats. Those dog chocolates do the trick perfectly.

• The best treats to reward him with are little chew-size pieces of cooked and warm liver (the same liver that people eat). Dogs will do anything when they smell it I train my lab and my golden retreiver with it and it works perfectly (and it's healthy for dogs). My trainer was the one who told me about it and since I train them with liver they put a lot more attention when you give them orders.

I like 'It's Me Or The Dog' the most. I've only seen 'The Dog Whisperer' a few times as it's not on a lot on Australian TV but I didn't think his training methods were as good as what other people thought. Maybe it's just that I haven't seen much of him but still, not my preferred trainer.

  The dog whisperer is OK if the dog is already badly socialized and out of control. But if you want to raise your puppy to avoid bad behavior, learn about Calming Signals, Clicker training, and positive reinforcement. These are advanced methods, but if you learn just 10% of these methods, you will be a much better owner!

I have a Shih-tzu age one. He is very well behaved with one exception. He will dart out of the door and run. I know this is a game to him but, it's not funny. If he is in the back yard (finced in) or in the house he comes back as soon as called. It's only when he is beyond that scope he runs. I am so scared he will get hurt. Last night he darted out the door and ran like hell across the street and all around in the neighbor hood. He is very small only 8 lbs. Hi there,

First, how are you using the clicker? To be effective, the clicker is used to reinforce a behavior after it is done (for example, if you are teaching a dog to sit, you might lure him with a treat and click the second his butt hits the ground, or click/treat for small movements of the butt towards the ground, until he is in a sitting position). If you're clicking before he comes, then it reinforces him running away. If you're already using the clicker correctly, that's great! The Clicker Training website has a list of beginner and advanced tips for using clickers really precisely (link at bottom).

Have you seen the clicker solutions yahoo group? http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/Click… They have a ton of people who clicker train, from people just starting out to professional trainers.

Anyway, they might have more ideas than just me, so I highly recommend you check them out (nothing like free advice from the pros!)

My advice would be to start working on recalls with him in the front yard. Start with a 6 foot leash and click and treat for attention on you, coming to you, etc.. Right now the great outdoors is probably so exciting that it's difficult for him to focus. The more you're out front, on walks, going on rides, and generally seeing new things, the less exciting it will be (and the more appealing coming to mom or dad for a treat!). Once he's giving you his attention outside, put him on a long line for safety, to keep him from running into the street if he gets distracted, and practice recalls from further away.

Working on other behaviors out front, such as sit and lie down, can also help him learn to focus.

You can also train a "Roadkill Recall" - named for what it keeps your dog from ending up as! I put a link to it in the sources. This is for emergencies rather than general recalls like in the house, in the yard but not near danger, etc.. It takes work, but could save your dog's life.

Effective Dog Training by Using Collar and Leash

• Try taking him out on a leash. Do this as often as you can for a while. Maybe it will teach him where is boundaries are.


• My sister's 2 yo dog was killed. He played darting game, ran right out into her street and it was over so quickly.
  
  She did get another dog, but this time around she invested in training classes, that taught the basics, including "recall."
  
  Try putting your dog on a leash, tell him to "come." Start out very close to him, to prevent mistakes. You want to create a situation that is correct as much as possible.
  
  When your dog makes a move to come towards you, regardless to whether or not he actually comes, you praise him, then give a treat.
  
  Continue with this method, increasing the distance and always treat-reward his positive behavior.
  
  Once he's consistent with coming on a leash, try a longer leash. Lastly, once he's reliable on a long leash, let him off the leash (only in the house) and call him. When he comes treat him, and always be super positive.
  
  If he thinks he's going to be leashed, each time you call, then chances are he's going to keep darting, so learn to mix it up, so he is never quite sure when he's going in his crate, going to be leashed, or whatever the case is.
  
  G'luck.


• Get him a small training Collar. When he jumps out press the button. There are several different levels. remember this is only for that one thing. It will divert him from jumping out in the street. Some people may think this is extreme,however this action is dangerous.


• He needs to learn door waits and coming when called (it must be trained to be 100% and it can be). The clicker is not a remote control - the clicker is used as a secondary reinforcer for the DESIRED behavior only. You need to brush up on clicker training and basic obedience.

Dog trainig is not cruel today if taught by an informed and educated person willing to apply reasonable methods as to not harm the dog.
Dog training has evolved in many ways over the years.
Today we have positive reinforcement with ton`s of praise and treats given to our dogs for doing what we ask of it.
The exercises such as recall or a proper heel have been broken down to make the dog learn. Which by the way dogs are capable of along with thinking. When give a choice the dog will always work for a positive result.
Now I hate to admit this but being as old as I am, I have witnessed and participated in the evolution of dog training if you will.
Back in the 60`s and 70`s their was the old cling and jerk method where only verbal praise was given and dogs were treated more livestock or were bred for a particular purpose.
Their was no getting all excited or trying to find the right motivator to get your dog to do what you want happily, their was only the severe correction applied to either a choke or a martingale collar sometimes doing irreparable damage to the dogs character by forcing it to submit to commands instead of praising it for learning the command.
We have come a long way as a culture unfortunately we still have a long way to go.
I imagine that their are still folks out there that do not posses the tools to properly train a dog today and perhaps they would employ more old school methods and yes by todays standards it is seen as cruel.

Buying An Electronic Dog Training Collar Doesn't Have To Be Shocking

• I only think that dog training is cruel if you physically abuse or harm the animal to train it.
  
  I grew up with my mom training our dogs using a choke collar for learning to walk on a leash, punishing the dog for peeing in the house, and lots of praise when the dog did well. Although I don't think it's necessarily cruel the way she trains, I'm learning that it doesn't work well for all dogs (I tried these methods when puppy-siting an older dog) and there are better more positive training methods, like Clicker Training. I plan on using clicker training for my dog when I finally get one of my own.A well trained dog is better for both the owner and the pet. Your dog will listen to you and get into less trouble.
  
  It will also be less stressful to the dog when it goes to a Vet.
  A well trained dog is more likely to sit there and stay relaxed while being examined or receiving a shot. Although the dog doesn't enjoy the visit to the Vet; it isn't a traumatic experience.
  An untrained dog causes more stress for the dog; it most likely will need to restrained and if it struggles the assistant restraining the dog has to apply more force to keep the dog still enough to receive the shot. The dog won't be happy and the next visit will be just as unpleasant for the untrained dog.And as for the dogs that work or do tricks for a living, you tell me which dog is more happy; the dog sitting at home all day waiting for the owner to return OR the dog that it out with it's owner keeping busy and getting treats and praise for doing something it knows how to do?

• Dog training is not cruel, if it is done humanely. If it were cruel, big companies that specialize in pets like petsmart and petco, would not offer puppy and dog training courses.
  It also depends what type of training youre talking about. Of course training a dog, or any animal for that matter to fight is cruel and inhumane. But to train a dog/animal to be obedient without inflicting physical or mental/emotional harm, is just fine.


• Depends on the training. Most dogs need and want mental stimulation. I practice positive reinforcement for good behavior, not the traditional ways, choke chains, etc. Dogs like to please, if they are stimulated by using their intelligence and rewarded by treats or praise, then this is NOT cruel. If they are forced to do something over and over by punishing them or causing pain, then yes this would be cruel.

The will be put in check if they are broken. As humans we need to have our dogs trained. I have 28 pitbulls in my house and they are all trained and all know who the leader of the house is. If dogs are not trained properly we would have a huge problem. Dogs would rule people. Now this all depends on how you train your dog. Obvioulsly you can not use violence. This is reason dogs turn on people. Dog training is not only not cruel but necessary. We have to do it.It is a responsibility as a dog owner to train our dogs and keep our dogs happy, healthy, and balanced.

Dog Health Questions: What's the best treat to give my dog during training?

I have a 12 week old female english bull terrier and we're trying to get a head start by training her at home. She's very food motivated but I feed her high quality dog food (taste of the wild bison), and I don't want to just give her any old treat.

You need something that is small and low in calories. Also, if you are using them during obedience class you should get something that is soft so that your dog can eat it quicker. I can't recall the brand, but I found some all natural liver and cranberry treats at Petsmart and my dog loved them. I think they were only 1 calorie each.
