Dog Health Questions: How to train a hunting dog?

My brother-in-law just bought a new chocolate lab, Belle. He is an avid duck hunter and plans to use Belle to retrieve the ducks. However, he was called Wednesday with a last minute notice that he had to report to Ohio to work. We live in Louisiana so obviously he won't be able to work with Belle while she is still young. Before he left he asked if I would work with her, since my sister has a young baby. Without hesitation, I agreed! Afterwords, I began to realize I have NO dog training experience. I have never had a dog or any other pet for that matter. I know nothing about duck hunting or what a duck hunting dog is required to do. A private trainer is out of the question because of the expense.

Any tips on basic obedience, advanced training, gear, treats, or anything else would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks so much!

Effective Dog Training by Using Collar and Leash

Recommended Answer:
I train hunting dogs for a living. All kinds. The first thing is to let that little puppy get used to some water by pure instinct he should love to swim and the water in general. Be sure to supervise him while he does this.
Make sure he has a problem with ducks, a big one. Buy a duck or something that mimics a duck and make sure he has some form of prey drive for it, that he wants to go get it.
Now just the same you want to get him used to gun shots perhaps take him to a shooting range.
Also make sure he wants to play with toys this will help later

You Can buy some trainer dummies off of Cabelas that look just like a dead duck bobbing in the water, develop a word that no one would say normally to represent "go fetch" as if he does here that command he will be in the water looking for whomever. As soon as you throw it say that word and he will learn when you say that work it means go time.
You can get all training supplies at Cabelas.com
If you ever encounter any problems just e-mail me at Komodofrenzy@aol.com

Dog Health Questions: Hunting dog training?

I'm starting to train my fully grown dog to squirrel hunt. He does well in the yard but when i take him to the woods he gets really excited and takes off running so far I can't hear him anymore. How do I train him to stay close to me? Say 50yds?

Well that's a problem with most hunting dogs.. Especially if it's a hound when it goes into "hunting mode" they usually block off their hearing and focus on the scent.... There really is only a few options here and that's either to keep up with him.... I've seen plenty of hunter have their hounds on leashes too.....

Beginner Dog Training Classes

  • I'm not a expert but I'd say you need to get close so he/she won't run off too far. But if that doesn't work teach him/her his/her boundries! And if that won't work... shock collar. Just kidding but try something. Don't do too much fliping back and fourth.

Dog Health Questions: Dog Training Leaving our 10 acres?

My 2 dogs like to go run in the ditches & won,t come when called. We have 10 acres with property all around & 8 miles from town. They get in trouble for killing a calf, which they didn't do. How do I train them to stay in our 10 acres?

Aggressive Dog Training - Expert Advice

    Recommended Answer:
Collar and leash training till they are 100% obedience trained. Otherwise use a zip line, a tie out, or get an outdoor kennel & run.

Loose dogs can be shot by farmers if they are bothering the livestock. Why take chances with yours if they do not stay on your property.

How to Understand Your Dog by Using Good a Dog Training Manual

    • If your dogs have a habit of leaving your 10 acres how do you know they didn't kill the calf? I'm assuming it happened while they were inside or at least under your direct supervision.

Anyway, dogs that wander can be difficult to train. If your dogs don't have an impeccable recall then you'll have to fence or leash them when they're outside. If they have a great recall but wander when left unsupervised, then supervise them. It's generally considered a bad idea to leave a dog outside unsupervised, even behind a secure fence, because they find all kinds of ways to get into trouble.

As for a dog that just stays on the property, a lot of this boils down to sheer dumb luck. Luck of the draw in getting a dog that simply doesn't have that kind of wanderlust. If the dogs aren't neutered, consider neutering them. Wandering is often related to the mating drive and a little snip can completely eliminate that. Or it may not.

    • Hey, I see you need some sort of guide that will give you tips and tricks to help your dog become fully trained and more healthy. Recently one of my friends really needed some advice on how to train his dog. He followed the dog training academy course to successfully have a fully trained dog in just a few weeks. He told me he would recommend it to anyone, so that's why I'm passing on the information.

    • Hey there, I certainly know what your needing. I've had the same problem with my puppy. Recently one of my relatives really needed some advice on how to train his dog too. She followed the dog training academy course to successfully have a full trained dog in a very short time. Let me know if this helps.

Dog Health Questions: Dog training help needed!?

I need some help with my dog, he goes nuts when anyone comes to the door and jumps all over them when they come into the house. When it is people that know him and aren't fussed about his over excitement to see them I keep him in and just try to get him to stop as soon as I can but when its people that don't like dogs, are nervous of dogs, just don't like it or don't know him I have to leave him out the back garden. Its a real pain and I am starting up childminding and I have to have him in the house so I need to stop this behavior now, I will have the care commission officer coming round as well as perspective clients with their children and obviously this behavior is totally unacceptable. He is a great natured dog who is great with kids and very obedient in every other way, he doesn't have to go on the lead outdoors and comes back as soon as he is called, this is the only antisocial behavior he has at all and if I don't get it sorted out it has the potential to ruin this business. I am planning on either taking him to classes or getting a trainer to come to the house, I just wanted so see if anyone on here could help first.

Review - Secrets to Dog Training is Unparalleled Canine Training Resource

    Recommended Answer:
We have an "Invisible Fence" system at our house for our dogs. This system came with a remote control. The remote control can emulate what the invisible fence does. That is, it can make a beeping sound, and it can send out the shock through the shock collar that the dog must wear always. You can pick an invisible fence type system at Lowes, Home Depot, etc. How we trained our dogs to not go crazy when our own door bell rang was to use the remote control along with verbal commands to "NO BARK" or something along those lines. You can get an invisible fence type system that does not require using an in-ground wire. The ones I am thinking of use a base station and the dog must stay within a certain distance of the base station or the collar will warn, then shock the dog. Anyway, when the door bell rings our dogs were going nuts and were hard to catch. The remote on the invisible fence system allows negative reinforcement to the dog without having to run around and catch the dog. Start with verbal command, then warning beep on the collar a few seconds later, which comes from the shock collar, then use the shock itself if the dog does not obey. Follow this up with calming down the dog. Do this training on the dog with a friend that will be deliberately coming to the door over and over again to assist training the dog. After awhile the dog will learn to obey your command and no shock collar will be required. Good Luck.

Dog Health Questions: Tips on Dog Training?

My boyfriend and I have recently adopted a puppy from my school (he was in a kennel environment). He is now 9mo old. He got along great with the other dogs there...and he will let a person do anything to him. Now that he is home though we have some problems. Being in the kennel he was ( from birth ) he got to know those 30 some dogs..however he did not learn how to meet new dogs and become friends. He has become friends with my dads older lab and My boyfriends Parents Older golden retriever however they do have a beagle mix and a german shepherd that he is still scared of...but doing quite well...we take him for 2 long walks a day along with going out for potty breaks. we have started him in a search and rescue dog team and he is doing pretty good. On his walks we can pass dogs barking and lunging aggressively and he is fine ...trusts me and walks on by but when we try to meet new dogs a become friends sometimes he tries to attack them....Im not sure what else other than desensitization we can do..we have also been taking him to petco and petsmart trying to find dogs to meet....he has done pretty well there ..but i dont want to always be worrying...any training methods??

Dog Training Schools - How to Pick a Good School

      Socialization, Socialization, Socialization.
If you have friends with dogs that are well behaved try to arrange play dates with them. Sometimes dogs are leash aggressive, meaning they are over protective when on a leash. Work with your trainer on this issue as he/she can actually see why the dog is acting this way. It could either be offensive or defensive. You will have to use a different approach depending upon what it is.. A search and rescue dog must be able to work with other dogs around and any type of dog aggression will not be tolerated. The good thing is he is still young and with work you have a good chance of curing this.

Dog Health Questions: K9 Guard Dog Training - Advice?

So I live in a not so friendly neighbour hood. I am considering adopting one of the dogs I am fostering. I often do not like walking at night especially now that the sun is going down earlier and earlier, because I fear for my safety, as well as the safety of my current 15 lbs puppy.

Now I would never do something that would be bad for my dogs health, behavior, etc...

Now the puppy i'm considering adopting is going to be large and fairly intimidating looking.
She would make for a good watch dog as well as a good deterrent to creepers on walks. She would make me feel safe. Now I by no means know how to train a guard dog, and would NEVER consider doing it on my own. But I have looked up some on this and there is specific hard core training places that help to train you and your dog. I would like her to know when a threat is perceived or if I use a command that she would step in to action.

Now I wanted some advice on this as I am unsure about the whole idea. Anything is appreciated. Thank you.

      Are Dog Training Collars Humane

      Recommended Answer:
Well at least you are now saying that you can't train the dog yourself unlike your last question.

      http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;…

You are still missing the point a little.
As Kaper says, a dog that is suitable to take forward for training is a very special dog, and that's not all of them. It's like with police dogs, very few make it through the training as they have to have a superb temperament to do this work. That is really not evident until the dog is a little older and this is why police pups are not even assessed until over 1 yr old to go forward for training.

I have at this very moment (came in yesterday) a guard dog (rottie) in my kitchen. He has gone lame and they would of put him down but we have taken him into rescue. His owner used to lock up parks late at night and the dog was employed to be with him. This dog is NO GUARD DOG. He has had no guard dog training and he lived in the family home with the guy and his kids. He is absolutely gorgeous and in fact a little bit of a woos.

If you are going to get a rottie as that is what you were talking about, then bring this dog up to be TOTALLY SOLID, friendly, sociable etc. I deal with rotties ALL the time... hundreds and I can tell you now if you just pulled tight on a rotts lead when walking down the road and showed anxiety through the lead then there would be few that didn't react and get the message. Hence we have to be so careful.

I know I was quite rude to you in your last question, but I ADORE this breed. Have had and worked with them for over 20 yrs and spend hours per day trying to promote the good side of these dogs. I don't need people that don't know what they are doing trying to do a bit of DIY guard dog training with a dog that has not even been temperament tested. A dog that goes forward for training has got to be SO sound. Yes I get rude because I do not want to see this breed banned.

Bring your rottie up with firm fair discipline and forget the "guard" dog bit. Go to schutzhund if you want and get shown and trained with your dog. The dog thinks of it is a sport and doesn't get aggressive at all. Great fun for all and you will learn lots and in the correct way.

I would never go to one of these Guard Dog Training Centres unless I totally trusted them.
Let me tell you something else. I have been bitten by one rottie in all that time, and he was being rehabilitated by a guy that is supposed to be one of the best in the UK. The dog was supposed to face off at me only - it didn't - it bit me in the arm. Even people like him get it wrong.

Add --- I can see now that the join dates are different, even though the user name is exactly the same. Time yahoo stopped duplicate user names tbh. No matter, I will leave it there as it adds to the debate.

Bad Dog Training Tricks - How to Correct Bad Dog Behavior

      • Any dog which lives in your house will warn you of intruders, then you can phone or shout for help.

Unfortunately if a dog lives outside, it will be silenced if anyone wants to break into your house.

I have had dogs forever, however because I am their pack leader and because of what I have read, I suspect that they would not intervene if I was attacked when I was walking them. My dogs sleep in my bedroom, they bark and nudge me if there is a noise outside when I am sleeping. I think that this is because they know that their pack leader is vulnerable.

      • In order to be able to train a dog to be a guard dog, you must first start with a dog with the proper temperament. This is genetic and is not easily found. I suggest if you truly want to invest in a guard dog and training, that you start with selecting a dog from a breeder who specifically breeds dogs suitable for this type of work.

Puppies are a craps shoot, even from a good breeder. This is why most Police departments select green dogs (1- 1 1/2 years old), so they can be better evaluated.

        Add-
I am not exactly sure what the question is, but that is my advice if you do decide to seek out training. It is expensive, and would be a huge waste of money if your dog is not suitable.

Dog Health Questions: What's the best dog training show on TV?

The monks , the English lady, or the dog whisperer? Why? Any other good ones?

      Effective Communication in Dog Training

      Recommended Answer:
I like 'It's Me Or The Dog' the most. I've only seen 'The Dog Whisperer' a few times as it's not on a lot on Australian TV but I didn't think his training methods were as good as what other people thought. Maybe it's just that I haven't seen much of him but still, not my preferred trainer.

      Overview of Dog Training

      • Dog Whisperer because he shows how to take control of a pet in a passive way. Adventures in Doggy Daycare is also a good show on channel 42(cblvsin)

      • Of those 3 I would choose the Dog Whisperer..

What's that other guy, I just started seeing him now and then.. At the end of my Leash or something along that line??? I CANNOT stand that guy!
I saw the show where he let the people's dogs loose out the front door and onto the road.. He told them if they weren't going to train they might as well just set them free.. OMG I wanted to see him hit by a car as he scrambled to get their dogs back... I refuse to watch his show!

      • The dog whisperer!!!! Gotta love Ceaser!

      • The dog whisperer is the best show. However, I recommend that you go to the library or amazon and find books and videos by Ian Dunbar and by Turid Rugaas.

The dog whisperer is OK if the dog is already badly socialized and out of control. But if you want to raise your puppy to avoid bad behavior, learn about Calming Signals, Clicker training, and positive reinforcement. These are advanced methods, but if you learn just 10% of these methods, you will be a much better owner!

      • I LOVE Ceasar! He has an amazing understanding of the really bad issues with dogs.

I wish he would open a Cesar dog school for those of us who don't livein L.A.

I also love the Monks, totally different energy than Cesar, but really great as well.

I watched the English woman for all of 15 min. I couldn't stand her!

      • Divine Canine-hands down!

      • CEASER is awesome
