Dog Health Questions: Hunting dog training?

I'm starting to train my fully grown dog to squirrel hunt. He does well in the yard but when i take him to the woods he gets really excited and takes off running so far I can't hear him anymore. How do I train him to stay close to me? Say 50yds?

Well that's a problem with most hunting dogs.. Especially if it's a hound when it goes into "hunting mode" they usually block off their hearing and focus on the scent.... There really is only a few options here and that's either to keep up with him.... I've seen plenty of hunter have their hounds on leashes too.....

• I'm not a expert but I'd say you need to get close so he/she won't run off too far. But if that doesn't work teach him/her his/her boundries! And if that won't work... shock collar. Just kidding but try something. Don't do too much fliping back and fourth.
