  No, I don't believe a whisperer is like a trainer. A whisperer can get "in tune" with an animal, to calm it when it is raging, scared, or charging. (It often has to be done in seconds, if it's a "charging" situation.) Of course, there are also the calm times, as well, when there is "psychic" activity between the whisperer & animal -- that's communication (and in this case, the whisperer is also a "pet psychic"). Animals are extremely sensitive to "vibes" - a whisperer can "control" them, in a sense, by communicating with the animal at that level.
  
  A trainer teaches an animal to behave, take commands, do tricks. He may have a small amount of "whisperer" in him... I have not seen it in trainers, but it may exist.
  
  A "pet psychic" (at best) knows animals well enough to "read" them (know what's they are thinking); sometimes enough to "converse". It unlikely that a "pet psychic" could control a raging animal -- if he could, he'd be called a "whisperer".

Personally, i don't look for degrees in dog training - they can easily be faked, you know.

I look for EXPERIENCE. Who the person trained with, what methods they use or have used, how long where they training under a person, how many people did they train under, how many dogs have they trained, are any of those dogs TITLED in obedience trials.

I also look for things like their past work history - any experience working with animals, any shelter experience, and so forth.

There is so much you CAN'T learn through a few college courses. Many colleges will focus on ONE method of training (positive methods being most popular) and that method may NOT work on all animals (in fact, being a shelter worker i KNOW that some methods being used today are totally useless for most dogs.)

It's also hard to tell which college or course is ACCURATE. There are many out there, again, that focus on or support one thing over another even though no one really knows for sure.

If i where you i would look into mentoring under a trainer or two. Or three, or four... or as many as you can find.

Add - looking at the links, most offer a lot of their "courses" over the internet and very few have rigorous hands-on training. You're better off working under a professional in the field than doing things over the internet.

Cookie is absolutely right.My husband once bought one of his books. I read it, then threw it out. He has NO concept of how to train animals and really does not understand them. His methods are outdated and based on flawed and incorrect data about animal behavior.

If you really want to do some good, solid training, you would be much better off finding a local trainer and spending your money there.

Dog Health Questions: Guard dog training advice needed?

I want a dog that is a good family dog but can also be protective of my family/house. Ive looked into some of the more common guard dog breeds but then a new thought occured to me. We already have a 2 year old male chocolate lab who shows some signs of being protective. He sometimes barks when people knock at the door or enter the house and he barks and growls when people are in the/his yard.
