Dog Health Questions: What is the Best Large Breed Puppy dry dog food?

I am getting an 8 week old giant schnauzer next week and I would like to know what you recomend for a puppy. Schnauzers are prone to allergies so low allergie is good. No wheats and gains is what I read but i am not sure. I am looking for low salt and fat. I want a dog food that will be good for helping him grow big and tall. Please tell me what you reccomend. Also what kind of dog training treats would be good? Let me know. I really appreaciate it.

• Well I would recomend IAMS or Science Diet Large breed Puppy and right now you should not have to worry about allergies to foods. Most allergies don't develop until they are at least 1 year of age. Don't worry about it now! If you try to take care of it before they are allergic, you will not be able to use and otc dog food to help with the allergies you will have to get a prescription diet from the vet and they are COSTLY!!

Dog Health Questions: How can I get my dog to behave when out on a walk?

I can get my dog to do anything in the house. She is the perfect dog. she will sit, stay, come, roll over and more. She is the best dog ever until you take her out.

As soon as you pick up her lead she turns into a completely different dog. She pulls so much it hurts you arm. It is like she is in a frenzy. She wont pay attention to you and its like your not there. If you come across another dog or even just a person she will go CRAZY!!

How can I stop this. We have taken her to dog training classes but they are all just in a hallway and she behaves perfectly in them so they don't get to see the true her when on a walk.

I just want to be able to go on a nice walk with her and actually enjoy it instead of seeing it as a chore.

What you may want to do is get a Halte collar which goes around the face instead of a collar.
What they do is control the dog and helps you both walk alot better.
When you use them it is said where ever the head goes so does the body.
Also what you can do to train her to listen is get her to focus on you and that means call her name and have her look at you. Once she does, give her a treat and say Good Girl. What the treat does is get her interested in you and not in anything else.
But first you need to get the Halte Collar to help in the training process.
They will try to take it off but it will not come off.
Once she is adjusted to the Halte Collar, you can go on walks.
But again, start training her again by having her look at you for treats and once she knows that if she looks at you when you call her, she will understand that a treat will follow.
That is how you start to train. With treats and focusing.
Now when you go on walks I would suggest you ignore her behavior and when she pulls on the leash, you stop do not move and she will not be able to go anywhere no matter how hard she tries.
Take another step and if she pulls stop again.
She will soon learn that she cannot go until you do and make her come back to you with a treat after he looks at you when you call her.
This will take some time as she only knows her way and not the proper way.
The once you go past a dog she goes crazy on walk the other way away from the dog and ignore her behavior. She will soon learn that also.
But it is up to you to teach her and make sure she focuses on you for that special treat.
It will take patience on your part but that's the reason for training.

Dog Health Questions: I adopted my dog late January from the Animal Rescue Foundation...?

I adopted a three year old rat terrior/chihuahua in January. I love her to death and for the most part she's a "good dog". The thing is, I'm 5 months pregnant and my dog will jump on my stomach, climb on my face when I'm sleeping, or lay on my stomach or chest (which that I don't mind). I was wondering if it is too late to get her trained before the baby comes or is she too old! She doesn't understand commands, and I have no idea what she's gone through prior to me adopting her. Dog Health Questions: Can I give my dog raw meat? ?

I just got a brand new puppy from a shelter (a yellow lab/husky mix) He's 16 weeks old. We signed up with a very reputable dog training academy for training classes. Our trainer is this SUPER hardcore guy who trained Police Dogs & Attack Dogs in Germany before coming to the US. He's telling us that we should give up giving our dog dry dog food & instead switch to RAW meat (like steak & lean hamburger) mixed with raw eggs. He says that we should try to feed our dog the most natural of products, not processed dog food. His reasoning behind this is that dogs are descendents of wolves & wolves eat raw meat.
Also he is telling us that we should wait until he's about a year old before neutering him because the neutering a dog very early stunts his physical & mental development.
This is really conflicting info. It goes against everything the shelter told us. Plus I am not a 1st time dog owner. I also have a 9yr old black lab. Can some one give me some insight into this?

Raw is great for dogs! There is a difference between feeding raw and feeding people food- raw meat is what dogs are designed to eat and they usually love it.

Neutering early can affect the growth of your dog- for pet dogs though this is a non-issue. In the show ring, it is a different story but for the rest of us its fine to go ahead and have done.

• You shouldnt be bringing your dog to a trainer like that. Do some research, they use spike training collars, teach with fear, and sometimes starve a dog if he wont learn quickly. The dogs trained like this become very aggressive and the training doesnt stick with them. Police dogs are not trained like this, it is a lie that these trainers tell you to make you think your dog is getting the best possible training. Police train their dogs through clicker training methods or possitive reinforcement because they know it is the best, and only way they will learn. Do not feed your dog raw meat, it will get worms and it is too fatty for them. This will only make them more aggressive, people do this when they are fighting Pit Bulls. Go with what the shelter told you not this guy! The shelter wants whats best for the pet and they know what they are talking about. Please find another way to train it!!!

Dog Health Questions: Dog Training Advice!?

I have two juvenile male jack russell terriers. They are both 8 months old and from the same litter. I have had them since they were 8 weeks old, but have known them and seen them every day since they were born. They have very different personalities, Reggie(mine) is very laid back, fairly shy & nervous. Very attached to me and suffers abit with separation anxiety when it comes to me or his brother. Ronnie(my sisters) is very hyper active, can be abit vicious, is possessive over toys and is yappy. They both live in the same house, and sleep together over night in a crate.

When it comes to training, they are house trained and both understand 'Sit'. When they are apart from each other, both will sit and come and will stay with there human(for want of a better word). When they are together though they are uncontrollable! They bark, and pull and often run away!

They are cared for, and exercised mainly by me as my sister works away 5/6 days a week. I want to know if this can be resolved, or if they will always behave this way together? I tried to include as much info as possible to help. Thank you.

Then while they play, call your puppy to you, and use the leash to reel him in. Give him a treat for coming to you, then a command (called a release) that tells him he can go back to play again. Look, it's not about a clicker. It's about a marker--something that explicitly, clearly MARKS at an exact point in time that the dog unequivocally associates with "you done good." About 99% of humans are incapable of EXACTLY matching their voice every time. They say "yes" but it's in a slightly higher pitch. Or louder. Or more drawn out. It's different in some way. But I use a clicker. And I use my voice. And other trainers have used a key-light (for a deaf deaf) and another used a thumbs up sign. SeaWorld trainers use whistles (since the click doesn't carry underwater). It's all the same--it's about a "marker". It's not that a clicker is magic, you need to "load" the clicker (so the dog associates the click with a reward and thus the click means "you done good" and you need to get the timing down PERFECTLY. Ditto with your voice. Or whatever you use to mark with. The reason that clickers work so well with dogs is that the clicker doesn't get louder or longer, it doesn't change smell, it only makes one sound. But humans change their expression, we focus on something different, we give off pheramones, we get louder or softer. And the dog gets a mess of signals in there, only one of which is the "yes" that we say. So it tends to get lost in the mess of other messages. Because dogs are more visual and olfactory based when it comes to humans--our voice commands and language comes in a distant third in their perceptual focus.

2. Read up on operant conditioning and behavior shaping and you'll find out all the answers to this issue as well as how to train your dog. But in the meantime, of course you can stop using the clicker, just like you can stop rewarding or stop using your voice.

Example: when I was training my dog to heel and not pull on the leash when walking, we'd walk 5 steps, I'd click and treat and praise. We stopped clicking at 5 steps and moved it to 8, then 10, then 15, then 20, then clicked when he stayed focused on me during the walk instead of going for the squirrel. And variable reinforcement also applies--research shows that you get a better response if you don't treat every time.

You are going to have to practice a lot more outside before you try offleash training outside. Most offleash training begins after they have learned to respond to commands inside and out. Most advanced obedience trainers recommend using a german pinch collar, but I wouldn't recommend using it without at least talking to a trainer about how to use it. Then you can start practicing with a retractable leash, gradually increasing the distance between yourself and the dog until he will respond to commands from about ten to fifteen feet away. THIS TAKES WEEKS! Then they are moved to a "longline" which is basically just about 20' of rope with a clip attached to your dogs collar, that they can drag around, that way if they do not respond to a command you can still catch them, but they are never allowed far enough away that you can't immediately grab the leash. Then they are moved to a short (six inch) lead with the german pinch, so you can correct them effectively, if they move out of range. Your best bet is to sign up for advanced obedience classes with a local trainer it usually runs $40 and up for a group class.

She doesn't pull at all.She was perfect. We passed squirrels and kids and other dogs and she walked right beside me with out ever pulling on the leash. This is no clicker training. it is basically a plastic pronged collar that you have to really jerk hard but it really doesn't take very long. I have watched about half of the first video and he is very good. I cant wait to do more with her and teach her the down command. I haven't been able to take her to the beach since she was a puppy because i am afraid she will see something and get distracted and run away. but if this system works as well for other commands as walking on the leash- I expect we will be back at the beach this fall.

My dog's (he's a Beagle) about 8 months, and he's pretty much crazy. he cant control himself, always pulls the leash, still goes all over the place, eats just about everything he can find, and goes absolutely WILD whenever we have a guest over.

My city has monthly basic obedience training that it sponsor. It was way cheaper. If that's not the case, check with the local humane society or shelters for their suggestions or if they offer classes as well.

Digging a little and picking up a phone usually supplies results. And once you've taken the classes, be sure to keep reinforcing and practicing, even as your dog gets older. They tend to "forget" some times if you don't keep it up.

I live in a small 10 unit condo community, and 4 other neighbors have well trained dogs who all let their dogs play together in the courtyard (off-leash). I'm in the middle of training my 4 month old mini schnauzer using socialization, constant commands, praise and LOTS of supervsion. So today the crazy lady told me that I should keep my dog on a leash and that she wanted me to stop giving my dogs so may commands because I was bothering her. I told her he's a puppy and needs training both on and off leash, and that I was not willing to change the trainging style because my pup was responing really well to it. I also explained that as my dog got older, I would not need to give as many commands. She told me I was being insensitive to her feelings. I walked away. did I mention that her dog barks all day. So my question is how do I deal with a neighbor that does not understand dog training?

Keep doing what your doing. She apparently doesn't know how to train a dog since hers is NOT. She doesn't understand that it takes time and LOTS of commands. Tell her SHES being the nuisance and to mind her own business. Or you guys might have to find separate times to go out with your dogs.

• If her dog is kept on the leash all day and yaps all day then report her for nuissance abatement and also for cruelty to dogs.


• You don't deal with her. You ignore her just like you did today. She's crazy, you said it yourself. Don't waste your time on her.


• To put it simply, you don't. You are doing what is best for your dog, keep it up! If she doesn't like it, she can leave. She should understand that her dog should be trained, too. Just keep doing what you're doing and knowing that it is helping your puppy. :)


• Ignore her in a very polite and courteous way, of coarse.


• Who cares if you giving your dog commands bothers her? Tell her to go climb a tree. Obviously you are putting in the effort with your dog and you don't owe her an explanation as to why you are using certain tactics, etc. If her dog keeps barking and annoying you (and probably other neighbors), call Animal Control or the police department and have her given a warning to control her dog.


• Hold up! Make sure you've got your bases covered and she can't report you for having an off lead dog. In my county in Maryland, it's illegal to have a dog off lead except in an authorized area (dog park). Be careful with someone like this. She might try to make trouble (from your report, she's got some control issues) and gain the upper hand. Be very cautious with this woman. Continue your training but be smart about it. Your dog is very luckly. Good luck.

  I actually have a similar problem, I live in a condo too and my neighbor has an untrained nuisance of a terrier that bullys my schnauzer. She thinks its cute and that they are playing, and it makes me mad because I can tell my dog to heel and stay and she does, but her mongrel chases my dog and wont get off until I pick her up. She complains to me that I dont let my dog have any fun.
  
  Ive gotten to where I just ignore her and avoid her. If I am outside and she complains about Chelsea I just say "Ok, Marie" and go back inside or just ignore her and keep on with my business. If she comes out with her terrier, I take Chelsea in. It stinks, but it seems the most diplomatic way to deal with it.
