Dog Health Questions: Dog groomer/trainer questions??

I want to be a dog groomer and trainer when I get older. I already know how to tame them but I not to sure about training and grooming yet. so I am going to learn. anyway I just have a few questions,

dog grooming questions:
1)what is the average salary of a dog groomer?
2)What would you do if someone brought you like 4 dogs and wanted them done in a certain amount of time but you could not finish grooming them? (like drying ALL of them off or nail clipping or stuff like that)
3)What if you are bathing a ferrel dog and it bites you or won't corporate?dog training questions:
1) what is the average salary of a dog trainer?
2)what if you can't tame a certain dog? can you get someone to help you?
3)do you take the dogs for walks and stuff or is it just all training and then back to the kennel?questions applying to both:
1)do I have to go to collage for both of these jobs?
2)and can I do both jobs? (like train in the morning till like 3or 4 and groom from 5 til 10 or somthing like that?)

I've been grooming and training dogs for over 40 years. When I owned my own shop I took home about 60k per year. Most groomers are paid on commission, which means the more you can do the more you earn. Getting proficient enough to turn out 7 or 8 dogs a day takes time and experience. Location will determine pricing, as will local competition.

There are grooming schools you can go to in lieu of college, but a college education will serve you well in any field, so don't discount any such opportunity you may have. A degree in animal sciences, ethology and behavior can serve you well in work as a trainer or animal behavior specialist.

You will learn about timing your grooms with experience, but in most cases you will set the time for owners to pick up their dogs. You will also learn about handling uncooperative dogs at grooming school and with experience. Dealing with a feral dog is virtually unheard of. At the very least you'll want to ensure that dogs you work on have vaccinations that are up to date, something that a feral dog would likely not qualify. You might look for a job as a bather at a local grooming shop to get yourself started. Some groomers are also willing to train you to groom while you work.

I've never been paid for training dogs, though I have taught obedience and tracking for over 30 years. I volunteer through my local dog clubs. Volunteering with a training club is one of the best ways to learn about training. You will meet many experienced trainers and can learn from helping them teach owners of many different dogs. Combined with this experience, if you go to school and study animal behavior and training, you'll be in a better position to earn a decent living at it.

  As far as a client that has 4 dogs, you as the groomer tells the pet owner what time the dogs will be done, the client may ask if they can be done a certain time but if you have allot of dogs then you tell the pet owner when the dogs will be done. Now as far a ferrel dog this just dose not happen, ferrel dogs are wild they are not pets so people don't own ferrel dogs. If an aggressive dog dose come in you have every right to refuse to groom that dog.

Dog Health Questions: (UK) Dog Trainer Apprenticeship, dog based work possibilities? to get into the doggy world?

Ok basically i would like to get into dog training, ive looked at uni courses but they are either to biologically scientific or are too based to horses and are non-practical. I would rather work specifically with dogs only to:
a) further gain more knowledge and understanding of their behaviour first hand
b) to have someone show/teach me ways to interact with dogs.
c) to have PRACTICAL experience with dogs on a regular basis

Im 20, been working full time in an office environment since i left college a couple of years ago and to be honest the stress of it all has already got to me, which is NOT good.

Ive never really had any goals in life career wise - no direction at all. The reason why i have found the path "dog trainer" is:
a) Parents recently got a puppy, i moved out just before it arrived so not really mine unfortunately. However myself and my parents are first time dog owners thus i have a real interest in understanding the species, trying to understand dog behaviour. Wanting to bring balance to the dog, to be able to understand when my dog is intimidated so i can protect her as a pack leader.
b) really like the show "dog whisperer" with cesar millan - love how he lets dogs be dogs and the whole pack leader and energy thing.
c)had a dog trainer round for my puppy and it was a real eye opener into the dog world.
d) this sounds really stupid i know, but i would also like to go down this path to find who i am and to have a better more active lifestyle.

Anyhow, getting a bit off topic there (sorry first time on here)

Does anyone know of any dog trainer apprenticeship in dorset preferable closer to the coast than Shaftesbury. Or any practical dog themed jobs even if its just a weekend job or work experience?

Also i would like advice on if this would be a good career path considering my reasons for it.

It sounds like you are definitely interested in dogs, but before you choose this path I think you need a little more experience with it and with dogs. Start by volunteering at a dog training school. Often times when volunteering with dog trainers other opportunities open up, like going to conferences on certain dog behaviour topics. This is a good way for you to learn to read dogs when the dogs are almost always friendly.

If you do decide you want to become a dog trainer than ask the trainer you are working with how they got started. That is the easiest way in to the dog training world. Working with trainers and other people and their dogs will also give you an in in the dog world in general.

Dog Health Questions: Is something wrong with my dog ?

Hi i have a dog called Corneil, hes a border collie an 3 an half years old. sometimes when i walk into the room hes in i see bits of paper an a pencil lying around near him an this didnt really mean anything to me until my kids said they had nothing to do with it. anyway then i started to see my old dog training books laying near him, again nothing to do with my kids. And now ive really got worried. then my friend Romio called me an said that id tried calling him when he wasnt in, i knew i hadnt or infact anyone in our house had. but then he let me listen to the voicemail left. it was in a rough voice i hadnt heard before and then at the end of it was a bark.
now im cirtain my dog can talk, like the one in watch my chops. this is a big coincidence since all the people related in my question are in watch my chops. is my dog talking,reading, an writing, or is there something else going on ?

• I wouldn't put housebreaking on the list because almost everyone is pretty focused on starting that early. It may be the biggest one people think of but there's tons of nutcase dogs that won't pee in the house
  
  My top 10 would be:
  1. Not getting the dog enough exercise- it's hard to train a hyper dog
  2. Disciplining the dog way to long after the incident (actually that one has to do with housebreaking among other things)
  3. Not being consistent
  4. Improper socialization

Dog Health Questions: Any advise on dealing with a neighbor who does not understand dog training 101?

So I have a crazy lady neighbor who has an untrained yappy dog who is always on a leash. I live in a small 10 unit condo community, and 4 other neighbors have well trained dogs who all let their dogs play together in the courtyard (off-leash). I'm in the middle of training my 4 month old mini schnauzer using socialization, constant commands, praise and LOTS of supervsion. So today the crazy lady told me that I should keep my dog on a leash and that she wanted me to stop giving my dogs so may commands because I was bothering her. I told her he's a puppy and needs training both on and off leash, and that I was not willing to change the trainging style because my pup was responing really well to it. I also explained that as my dog got older, I would not need to give as many commands. She told me I was being insensitive to her feelings. I walked away. did I mention that her dog barks all day. So my question is how do I deal with a neighbor that does not understand dog training?

She might try to make trouble (from your report, she's got some control issues) and gain the upper hand. Be very cautious with this woman. Continue your training but be smart about it. Your dog is very luckly. Good luck.

  I actually have a similar problem, I live in a condo too and my neighbor has an untrained nuisance of a terrier that bullys my schnauzer. She thinks its cute and that they are playing, and it makes me mad because I can tell my dog to heel and stay and she does, but her mongrel chases my dog and wont get off until I pick her up. She complains to me that I dont let my dog have any fun.
  
  Ive gotten to where I just ignore her and avoid her. If I am outside and she complains about Chelsea I just say "Ok, Marie" and go back inside or just ignore her and keep on with my business. If she comes out with her terrier, I take Chelsea in. It stinks, but it seems the most diplomatic way to deal with it.

Dog Health Questions: What are some good dog training books or DVD?

I currently have my 5 month old in puppy class. I was going to go through all 4 classes at Petsmart, but now I'm thinking I could save about $300.00 and teach my dog the same things (and probably more), if I invest in a good book or DVD. The entire second half of the book is the soundest, strongest method of obedience training I have ever come across. Apply the method and you will end up - if you do the hard work - with a dog whose behaviour is reliable, well-mannered and safe in any situation, with any person.
  
  The book also goes into great detail on how to train a safe personal protection dog - a dog that will warn, then hold off, and then - if it's handler's life is in danger - then proceed to protect. Obviously you won't be going into the personal protection training, because it's very hard work and not really necessary, but you get the point - the guy knows what he is doing.
