Dog Health Questions: In creating a pack for a rottweiler, who becomes the pack leader if there is more than one person in family?

I am considering buying a rottweiler for my family. All sources I've referenced for dog training strongly recommend creating a pack environment for the dog in which you are the leader; however, I need everyone in the household (5 people) to control the dog. Should everyone be involved in training it?

Every pack has a pecking order - and (like it or not) the family dog needs to be the lowest in the pack pecking order - otherwise you could have problems with aggression towards other 'lower ranked' pack members down the track.

It's important not to have 5 Alpha's in your pack also. 2 at most. The rest of your family are just part of the pack.

  These are a great dog. Do not get me wrong. But I also have a sister who is skilled in facial reconstruction surgery. She deals with many children who have been hurt by dogs that were not well trained. Note I do not name any breed in particular because it does boil down to the owner every time. Please be sure this is the dog you want. If you cannot control it, it will control you.
  
  When it comes to selecting that perfect companion, as a breeder, I highly recommend that you contact local breeders and talk to them. Meet the stud and his harem. Most breeders take pride in their dogs and the quality of the puppies.
  
  The puppies should come to you fully socialized. Ours, once they are of age, are held by everyone whenever there is an opportunity. They are used to their mouths being opened and any part of their body touched. We have never had a problem yet in 8 years of puppies. I might add that when it comes to a hard head, our stud male is more persistent than any breed I have ever come across. darn smart too. It is lucky he has a beautiful temperament !
  
  Our potential clients are usually met as they get out of the car by any number of the harem out running around the gardens. Not for the faint of heart, three farm doggy shaggy standard poodles all happy to greet you! They are the best advertisement for buying our puppies. That is the nicest way to get puppies.   Just a thought. If you have 3 kids, you might want to consider an animal that does not shed and is hypoallergenic. I am thinking of your housework level. I know it sounds like I am promoting our breed but this is not the case. In 10 years of maintaining silver rugs, hardwood floors and everything in between, with three adult poodles and 200+ puppies until a certain age, we have never yet had to vacuum for dog hair! Whether the dogs were shaved for summer or completely shabby and dread-locked a few months later, there was never fur.
  
  When you have kids housework is always an issue. That is why I suggest this. Other hypoallergenic dogs are Just a big consideration. As for many is the hypoallergenic thing.

Dog Health Questions: Training dogs to do tricks?

There are lots of things I want to train my dog. For a few weeks I'll just let him be a carefree puppy, then start working on sit etc.
Most of the people I Know have only ever taught their dog to sit and maybe lay down and that is it. Dog training classes only teach the basics too.
Are there any really amazing tricks you can teach a dog and how could you teach them. For example in the paper once was a dog who could use a cashpoint and another who would go to tesco each day to collect the shopping, They had not been trained to be guide dogs or anything, it was only what their owners had trained them. Neither of these two things interest me but teaching him to switch on and off a light switch would be handy etc or to fetch different items like a hairbrush etc

Training should be a fun game for your dog - it shouldn't stop him being care free. You should start right now so he knows that you're the one to look for in new situations, and for things he doesn't understand - plus if he's being entertained and worn out by training, he'll be less likely to get into trouble.

You need to give lots of praise and rewards and find out what he'll work for - for example my dog can't focus when there is food about, but she'll try and work out what I want her to do if I have one of her fave toys.

You also need to practice the training over and over, even when he knows it. I practice sit, down, stay etc everyday before I start working on her new tricks - that way you're setting him up for success, and he'll gradually understand that this means its time to really concentrate.

You need to be very patient and try to think "what is the easiest way I can communicate with him" - you also have to be really consistent.

Doing stuff like switching on the light starts with teaching the "touch" command - put out your hand - when his nose touches it, you say "touch" and give him the treat.
Then you can progress to putting a post-it or something on your hand - teach him to touch that on command - than move the post-it to the light switch. Every time he accidentally flips the switch you say "switch" or whatever command you want.
Some people use one of those pointer sticks - like teachers have - and they teach their dog to touch the end of the stick, then they can put the tip of the stick on whatever new thing they want them to touch.

Depending on how smart your pup is and how willing he is to work, you can teach him all kinds of annoying things. Like steal the remote control when you don't like whats on! The most useful trick I have taught her is to ring her own door bell when she needs to go out - its recently saved my carpets in the middle of the night when she had a VERY upset stomach.

I would recommend just getting a book though - try a few from the library or go to the book store and flip through a few till you find one you like - there are very different ways to do it - depends what you feel most comfortable with. One that helps you with a puppy and an adult dog would probably come in handy. Good Luck!!

Dog Health Questions: How can I get my dog to behave when out on a walk?

I can get my dog to do anything in the house. She is the perfect dog. she will sit, stay, come, roll over and more. She is the best dog ever until you take her out.

As soon as you pick up her lead she turns into a completely different dog. She pulls so much it hurts you arm. It is like she is in a frenzy. She wont pay attention to you and its like your not there. If you come across another dog or even just a person she will go CRAZY!!

But it is up to you to teach her and make sure she focuses on you for that special treat.
It will take patience on your part but that's the reason for training.

When you are done cleaning up his mess, go back out and get him and bring him back in. Keep doing this until he gets the hint. Always use the same door to take him out!   Now, at night time and while you are at work, he's obviously not going to wait for you to come home (at least not right now). So, it may be a good idea for you to get a cage for him. NOTE: A CAGE IS ONLY USED FOR BEDTIME AND WHEN YOU ARE GONE!!! NOT ALL DAY!! So many people think they can leave their dog in a cage all the time when they're home. That's WRONG!
  When choosing a cage, you want to get one that is the size of your pet! If you get one that's too small, then he will be cramped (obviously). If you get one that he can run around in, he will just pee in one end and sleep in the other. You want a cage that he can stand up and lay down and just turn around in. THAT'S IT! A dog will not pee or poop where it sleeps! Make sure you take your dog out before bed. Then as soon as you get up in the morning. Make sure you take him out before you go to work. Then as soon as you get home!
  And don't let him out of the cage after being in it all night or day and just let him run around the house.... cuz if he peed on the floor- that would be YOUR fault!!
  And don't use the cage as a punishment for peeing on the floor either. For instance, if he peed or pooped on the floor and you get mad, don't put him in his cage as a punishment. Because if you do that, he might think you are trying to tell him that he's supposed to go in his cage! Hope this helps!

Dog Health Questions: What are the important things a dog trainer can teach their students?

I am asking this a second time, so if you answered the first time I thank you for your answers, but am just looking to see if there is anything I have missed!

will be instructor for a Petco dog training class soon. I want my students to be informed about their dog's behavior, but only have an hour a week to do the informing. In your opinion, what are the most important things a person can learn from a dog training class?

For example, a big one for me is bite control. I find that many of the dogs we get at the shelter I volunteer for are put down for nipping (a bite that breaks the skin, if unprovoked, will result in the dog being euthanized).

There is so much content to cover, you'll never get it all in. So while I agree that it's important to cover a range of specific areas of content, here are my suggestions (that go beyond the class content and help the human continue to train after the class is over).

1. Teach them a little about training resources. Expose them to a few useful websites, a couple of good books, turn them on to their breed website, tell them about dog performance activities. All of this makes it possible for them to identify other sources for help.

2. Teach them to always make training fun. They should always end every training session on a positive note (do something they know their dog can do--like a palm touch or a sit). That way the dog always views training as "fun" rather than confusing and uncertain and negative. This also allows them to continue training effectively after the class is over.

3. Emphasize the value in being positive. About how there are so many myths with dogs (the old "when they poop in the house, stick their nose in it and hit 'em with a rolled up newspaper" or "can't teach an old dog new tricks"). And that encouragement and taping into a dog's motivation (toys, treats, whatever) can get a dog to do almost anything. This helps them train the right way when you're not there to correct them.

4. Provide some handouts. They don't need to be extensive. But the idea that you SHOW how it's done and then they practice (typical dog class) applies only to visual and kinesthetic learners. Some folks won't remember if it's not in writing. Some of the other info I talked about earlier (dog events, websites, good books) can be a useful handout.

5. Last of all, it's probably not appropriate for this level but for classes above the beginner level, I'd introduce them to the clicker and then show them how to do behavior shaping (especially the 100 uses for a box game). This opens people up to all sorts of training as well as lots of tricks.

• Think about what the owner need for a sound foundation. It makes no difference how well the dog is trained if the owner doesn't know what to do with it. So your job is to train the trainer, not the dog. So start with how to put a collar on a dog properly, where should it be on the neck, how tight should it be. Then how a lead should be held, how to communicate to a dog through the lead. Remember that it is perfectly normal for a person to forget which is their left hand the first time they have a lead in it, so be patient.

  one thing petsmart/co is infamous for is failing to show owners how to properly correct their dogs.

• i think more important that specific obedience exercises, is just informing students on how their dogs operate. im a trainer at petsmart, and i take my job extremely seriously. i try to inform them the best i can of the most important rules to follow:
  Patience
  Consitency
  Timing
  Supervision
  
  if your not patient, owner and dog will just become frustrated and not learn a thing - training is a lifelong process!
  
  without consistency, the dog will have no understanding of what is expected of him/her (consistent in house rules AND in verbal/hand signals - remember, dogs don't speak our languages!)
  
  without timing, the dog will not be sure what is being rewarded and what is being corrected - aka the 2 second rule - dogs only associate rewards and punishments within TWO seconds of the action - no punishment after the fact!
  
  without supervision (visual AND crating), the dog will only find inappropriate ways to reward itself (chewing on shoes, peeing on the carpet, etc), or can get seriously injured or die (chewing electrical cord, injesting chemicals)
  
  only after these things are firmly in place can a dog even begin to learn to be well mannered.

i have a small dog and it will not stop barking everytime a strange vechicle goes by (we live in the city so we here him barking alot) or when people walk on the sidewalk. its not a vicious bark because sum times we have kids walking home from school or sumthing and they stick there hand through the fence and pet him and he seems to really enjoy it.lol is there a way i could get him to stop barking though.

Praise the dog for barking once he starts by saying 'Good job' and then 'What's the matter?'

Dog Training Aids and Tools Work! Just Learn How to Use Them

• i would send him to a trainer. and have them teach him like when you say stop "name of dog" and then he would stop barking.


• Sit with the dog in the yard, on a leash. Each time he barks, a quick "snap" on the collar, and a firm "no bark". As soon as he is quiet, praise him and pet him.
  Carry a water pistol, and when he barks, give him the "no bark" command, if he does not stop, squirt him on the back of the head with the water. Make sure the dog does not know you have the water - the water just comes out of nowhere. The water will not hurt the dog, it just startles them so they stop barking. Even if only for a second, praise them the split second they are quiet. They will associate being quiet with praise.
  Another option - take an empty soda can, rinse it out, and put a handful of pebble or pennies inside and tape over the hole. When the dog barks, give them the "no bark" command. If they do not stop, shake the can to make a very loud noise. If they ignore the noise, throw the can, hard, to the floor near them, but not to where it will hit them. Like the water, it's intended to startle to the dog to get them to stop barking, where you can praise them.

Dog Health Questions: Dog Training Advice!?

I have two juvenile male jack russell terriers. They are both 8 months old and from the same litter. I have had them since they were 8 weeks old, but have known them and seen them every day since they were born. They have very different personalities, Reggie(mine) is very laid back, fairly shy & nervous. Very attached to me and suffers abit with separation anxiety when it comes to me or his brother. Ronnie(my sisters) is very hyper active, can be abit vicious, is possessive over toys and is yappy. They both live in the same house, and sleep together over night in a crate.

When it comes to training, they are house trained and both understand 'Sit'. When they are apart from each other, both will sit and come and will stay with there human(for want of a better word). When they are together though they are uncontrollable! They bark, and pull and often run away!

They are cared for, and exercised mainly by me as my sister works away 5/6 days a week. I want to know if this can be resolved, or if they will always behave this way together? I tried to include as much info as possible to help. Thank you.

You should work with your sister on being able to call them out of play. Put a light leash on each of them, and let them drag the leash as they play. Then while they play, call your puppy to you, and use the leash to reel him in. Give him a treat for coming to you, then a command (called a release) that tells him he can go back to play again. Repeat this several times during each play session until they willingly come back to you when you call, even from the middle of a game. This is a safety exercise. It is important that they be willing to drop everything and come when you call because some day you might have to call them out of danger (such as being in front of an oncoming car). That also means you don't abuse the emergency call and call them out of play unnecessarily (in a way that ends the game only in a way that pauses the game).

Next, I'd put them in separate crates, each in his own human's room. Actually, by 8 months they're hopefully far enough on toilet training to begin sleeping without a crate. When I first start my pups sleeping out of the crate, a leave them on a leash and attach the leash to my wrist so if they get in too much trouble hopefully the activity will wake me.

Both of your dogs, even with their different personalities, could benefit from NILIF (Nothing in Life is Free). This program makes you the central focus in both dogs' lives, not each other. Just Google NILIF and you'll find all you need to know about this lifestyle.

Enrolling them both in an obedience class would also be beneficial at this time. It will give them the opportunity to meet other dogs and learn new skills. JRTs are intelligent, active dogs. They need the challenge of lifetime training to keep them out of mischief. Training also means one-on-one time between human and dog. That helps to build the bond, the relationship between you. If they spend most of their time with each other, they're going to tend to blow off the humans in their lives as unimportant. You need to be the most important think in your dog's life in order to have a completely fulfilling relationship with him from both your perspectives.

1. Clicker or voice? Yes.

Look, it's not about a clicker. It's about a marker--something that explicitly, clearly MARKS at an exact point in time that the dog unequivocally associates with "you done good." About 99% of humans are incapable of EXACTLY matching their voice every time. They say "yes" but it's in a slightly higher pitch. Or louder. Or more drawn out. It's different in some way. But I use a clicker. And I use my voice. And other trainers have used a key-light (for a deaf deaf) and another used a thumbs up sign. SeaWorld trainers use whistles (since the click doesn't carry underwater). It's all the same--it's about a "marker". It's not that a clicker is magic, you need to "load" the clicker (so the dog associates the click with a reward and thus the click means "you done good" and you need to get the timing down PERFECTLY. Ditto with your voice. Or whatever you use to mark with. The reason that clickers work so well with dogs is that the clicker doesn't get louder or longer, it doesn't change smell, it only makes one sound. But humans change their expression, we focus on something different, we give off pheramones, we get louder or softer. And the dog gets a mess of signals in there, only one of which is the "yes" that we say. So it tends to get lost in the mess of other messages. Because dogs are more visual and olfactory based when it comes to humans--our voice commands and language comes in a distant third in their perceptual focus.

2. Read up on operant conditioning and behavior shaping and you'll find out all the answers to this issue as well as how to train your dog. But in the meantime, of course you can stop using the clicker, just like you can stop rewarding or stop using your voice.

Example: when I was training my dog to heel and not pull on the leash when walking, we'd walk 5 steps, I'd click and treat and praise. We stopped clicking at 5 steps and moved it to 8, then 10, then 15, then 20, then clicked when he stayed focused on me during the walk instead of going for the squirrel. And variable reinforcement also applies--research shows that you get a better response if you don't treat every time.

You are going to have to practice a lot more outside before you try offleash training outside. Most offleash training begins after they have learned to respond to commands inside and out. Most advanced obedience trainers recommend using a german pinch collar, but I wouldn't recommend using it without at least talking to a trainer about how to use it. Then you can start practicing with a retractable leash, gradually increasing the distance between yourself and the dog until he will respond to commands from about ten to fifteen feet away. THIS TAKES WEEKS! Then they are moved to a "longline" which is basically just about 20' of rope with a clip attached to your dogs collar, that they can drag around, that way if they do not respond to a command you can still catch them, but they are never allowed far enough away that you can't immediately grab the leash. Then they are moved to a short (six inch) lead with the german pinch, so you can correct them effectively, if they move out of range. Your best bet is to sign up for advanced obedience classes with a local trainer it usually runs $40 and up for a group class.

Dog Health Questions: How much do dog training lessons at PETCO usually cost?

My dog's (he's a Beagle) about 8 months, and he's pretty much crazy. he cant control himself, always pulls the leash, still goes all over the place, eats just about everything he can find, and goes absolutely WILD whenever we have a guest over.

I know Beagles are hunting dogs and hound dogs, so their really outgoing and stuff, but this is extreme, and my dog is driving my whole family insane.

If Petco seems a little steep (looked into the myself, an hundred bucks per dog, yeah I couldn't afford it either), talk to your vet and see if your town offers any thing.

My city has monthly basic obedience training that it sponsor. It was way cheaper. If that's not the case, check with the local humane society or shelters for their suggestions or if they offer classes as well.

Digging a little and picking up a phone usually supplies results. And once you've taken the classes, be sure to keep reinforcing and practicing, even as your dog gets older. They tend to "forget" some times if you don't keep it up.

Dog Health Questions: Lead sled dog training techniques?

I have been training my Norwegian Elkhound dog to go left and right on "Haw" and "Gee", by standing in front of him with a clicker and some treats, telling him which way to go, and click/treating him if he goes in the right direction.

He does it pretty well, but when I harness him up and have him pull, he won't follow the commands and even tries to bite the towline. He will only perform the command correctly if I stand in front of him.

Is there anything wrong with my training techniques? Is there a better approach to teaching him left and right?

Schutzhund Dog Training - The Highest Level of Dog Training

You can't really teach Gee and Haw from in front of the dog because that's not where you'll be when you give the command. The dog may learn to recognize the commands, but he will also associate those commands with you being in front of him...which is entirely counter-productive to what you're trying to accomplish.

When teaching my young dogs to pull, I spend as much time behind them as possible. I've never worked with Elkhounds as sled dogs (not really their function, although I'm sure they can be trained), but I can tell you what I -- and most mushers -- do.

For Gee and Haw, you need ideally to find a winding trail or road that will allow you to use the commands as much as possible. However, even a neighborhood with cross-streets will work.

Ideally, the dog will be pulling a light load (small tire, etc.). Encourage the dog to stay out ahead of you while moving/pulling. When the opportunity presents itself, use a bend in the road or a turn at a crossroad to use the command. Bends in the road work great, the more sharp and obvious the better, because the dog more or less has to turn that direction, anyway.

When the dog is moving the direction you called for, praise ("Good Gee!" "Good Haw!") -- don't be too excited or the dog might turn to come back to you. You want to avoid this.

If the dog ignores the command (especially at a crossroad, where he has the option to ignore it), that is when you walk up beside him and move him firmly in the direction you want him to go, repeating the command as you do so. Once he starts moving that way on his own, praise him and slowly fall back behind him.

It is imperative that the dog learn to work with you behind him, or he'll never work on his own.

I would suggest "It's me or the dog" by Victoria Stillwell She has a TV show I watch every morning. I've used a lot of her tricks and the little mutt my DIl brought with her that was driving us all crazy is behaving like a perfect little angel. I'm even learning to like her. (The dog).
It is based on positive reinforcement. and has tackled some of the worst dog problems I've ever seen.
