Dog Health Questions: Dog's eye?

...is 'crying' but it is pus. This morning he had crust formed along the lids. Wiped it clean, pus is still forming. The white of his eye is a little blood shot compared to the other clean one. Don't see any foreign material in or around the eye. Any one know what's going on? Does this merit a vet visit? Or one of those random things that dogs get that will clear up on its own?

P.S. We went to "Puppy Play Time" at the dog training facility we go to last night. He played with other puppies and there was one that someone had found abandoned on the road a day ago. This pup was dirty, smelled really bad and limped. Don't even know why they brought it. Shots and clean fecal samples are required for dogs to play but do you think my dog could have caught something from this other little guy?

P.S. my guy is a 7 month american bulldog

Are you sure he didn't get his eye scratched in midst of playing? Thats probably what happened. Keep it clean and try to put warm damp face cloths on it...

Time To Find Out More About Appropriate And Efficient Dog Training

  • Your pup has an eye infection.
You will need anti-biotic ointment from vet to clear up effectively.
    gd. luck.

  • infection. I'd call the Vet..

  • Your dog may have picked up conjunctivitis, take him to the vet for an exam and see if he needs any treatment / antibiotics.

  • go to the vet immediately, we didn't ,and my golden had an eye removed ! Why take chances?

  • I would not panic for a few days.

  • Go to the vet at once, u idiot!

Yeah, he could've contracted something from the other dog.

Just take him to the vet at once without wasting any time!

  • Their eyes bulge out more then other. He could've scratched the cornea. i think it warrents a vet visit.

  • I too have an American Bulldog. Her eyes get really red every night and somtimes form crustys. She has always done this, she is 3 and white and Brown. I think its because she is tired and it dosn't seem to bother her. However, if this is a new occurance, then it could be a infectection of sorts. I would wait a few days and if it dosn't clear up then go to the vet. I just clean my dogs eyes every morning and she is good to go.

Dog Health Questions: Training, Thearpy Dogs?

After Seeing how much therapy pets can do for people, I really want to be part of it! I would like to adopt a shelter pet to become one, but i have a few questions. Ive done the research and know where I'd get his testing done etc, but I have other pets. Their more like family! I difffnitly wouldnt take my lab puppy into a hospital! So I was curious as to how you keep your therapy dog at home? I realize they have to be very well mannered, and obedient . And it seems that having them around other pets it'd be hardier to train. And more confusing for the dog, ex. If my dogs sleep in my bed, but i cant let him get in a hospital bed. Should I keep them separated at home? Maybe crate him at night? Do I need to be more strict with him? Can anyone give me some pointers on anything about therapy dog training! Thank you!

Training A Dog - Fundamental Dog Training - How-To

Recommended Answer:
The important thing is to start training early and often. Enroll your new pup in a puppy kindergarten class - the early training and socialization are critically important into shaping a stable adult dog.

You can treat your therapy dog just like the rest of your dogs. You'll likely discover through your training things that you can modify in your household to make ALL your dogs obedient and confident. Old dogs can learn new tricks, so if a current pooch has a bad habit, you can learn how to address it.

Through training classes, you'll learn the little nuances of training a stable companion.

Before getting a potential therapy dog, you might want to reach out to someone in your area who does therapy work and seek their advice/assistance on locating a good dog for the purpose. Not all dogs are right for therapy work. Go to AKC's website and locate a local training club for area contacts.

Best of luck!

Dog Training: Communicate With Your Dog Using The Call Command

  • I suggest that you contact a Therapy Dog group in your area. The Therapy dog group in my town sponsors a training school. Classes are open to the public and they offer a complete dog training curriculum from puppy school all the way through advanced agility. I suggest that you attend clicker training classes or some other positive reinforcement training classes. This will give you one on one time with your partner and the trainers can evaluate the dog for therapy partner potential,

The director of the Therapy Dog group in your area should be able to give you the advice that you will need to select a suitable dog for training. Most of the therapy dogs that I know are just plain dogs at home, but as soon as they put on their uniform ( vest) they know they are going to work and how to behave. The Therapy Dog group in my town is Delta certified as are all the dogs.

    http://www.deltasociety.org/Page.aspx?pi…

Having a therapy partner is a wonderful ambition and desire. It will take lots of work, time and patience. You will also need a dog that is capable of the work, that really enjoys people, is not anxious or afraid.

Dog Health Questions: How to socialize my dog?

i have a 3 month old pitbull very nice but when he meets new people he tends to bark at them, would it help if i walked him around where i live so he can get use to meeting people more? if he starts to bark and i tell him " no" but he continues to go on what should i do? anymore info about dog training would be great

Dog Training - How to Train Your Dog to Come to You & Prevent Dangerous Situations

Recommended Answer:
Yes, socialize him all you can. But at his very young age, you need to keep him away from anywhere there's a lot of dogs because he doesn't have all his shots yet. You can also enroll him in puppy kindergarten classes once he's had his 2nd set of shots - that's a great place for a puppy to socialize and the instructor can teach you how to train your puppy in basic commands.

My Belgian shepherd puppy started barking at people on walks a month or so ago. All I do is stop walking, put my hand on his collar and tell him "no barking". He stops barking and we keep walking.

Just keep on telling your puppy no, they need a lot of repetition, but he'll get it if you're consistent.

6 Step by Step Instructions For Dog Training Preparation

  • Always use a leash. Put the collar around the upper part of his neck. Not to tight, but not to lose either. When he barks you need to pull the leash up by giving it a slight jerk. also say "no". Not to hard because this is a puppy. If he keeps barking you need to put him on his back and hold him down until he submits. It is also a good idea to bring him up close and let him smell people. Take him to the park. Another reason he may be barking so much is because you haven't established that you are the Pack Leader, so he is taking the lead. While he is young you must establish that you are the pack leader, when he gets older it will be much tougher to do, now he young so it is a great time to start. I suggest you put him on his back atleast 3 times a day and whenever he misbehaves. He will whine, cry, scream, and fight you when you do it, but you must not let him up. Don't put your weight on him, but make sure you hold him firm. This will establish that you are the pack leader. I have a german shepherd puppy myself and I have been doing this with him. When I first started he would cry and scream and all that baby stuff. Now he just submits and he has accepted me as pack leader. Once they accept you as leader, it is much easier to control thier behavior.

  • You need to socialize him asap! Hurry before it's too late! The older they get the harder it is to do. Take him to a dog park and hold on the leash for about 3 days and then let him go to play and socialize. It will work just try to get in his mind and figure him out. = } good luck! Hope I get those 10 points = }

  • I socialize my puppy by taking him to Petsmart once a week, puppy training, and to the park. It's a very good idea to start puppy training at this age.

Dog Health Questions: Dog training classes?

I have a verrry spoiled chihuahua, I was thinking of putting him in training classes at our local petstore which teaches him basic commands, house manners, socializing etc. He has gotten bad, meaning nobody could come near me because he snaps at them, if anything comes to my house he'll snap at them, if other dogs try to play with him, he tries to attack them..Has anyone used these classes? Should I try it?

Proven Dog Training Methods

Recommended Answer:
The issues you've expressed are often associated with your dog's breed. They can be helped.

1 on 1 behavior modification is best. I'm partial to Caesar Millan's show, "The Dog Whisperer", but there are many good behaviorists out there. Caesar has videos you can purchase (I've included his site below).

I put in a search for dog whisperer training videos and discovered there are quite of few of these people out there. Good luck on your search.

(We have recently received a 4 yo poodle from a family who could no longer keep her. She had never seen horses, much less, giant drafts. We have applied some creative methods to help her get comfortable in their presence. She is getting better at allowing them kissing her in the face - without snapping at them. She's been with us 2+ mos and we've taken this very slowly with her. I've included her photo site with the horses, too.)

Who Let The Dogs Out? Pointers For In Home Dog Training

  • ive heard the trainers are very good and that they dont abuse the dog.i think it is a good idea

  • It is well worth a try!

  • It's an okay idea, but a better idea would to be to find a real trainer - not one at your local pet store. Personally, if your dog was in a class I was in, I'd be annoyed, since it sounds like your dog needs more than basic obedience. Please, find a great trainer, and do some one-on-one work before joining a class.

  • if you want to go extreme this is what worked for me: I have a jack russel chihuahua (who is also very spoiled). she got so antisocial she started to act vicious toward me (her owner since she was a puppy). so we asked the vet what to do, and she gave us the perfect solution: adopt a totally mellow dog to balance her out. it worked!

  • I think it'd be best if you find a real experienced trainer/behaviorist. Not so much the pet store trainer. Your dog has behavioral problem. He needs guidance, not learning sit and down.

  • Don't go to a local petstore ... they are the most expensive ...... go to a local Obedience Training place ......... Look around n shop ......
ALways want to make sure they let u attend ..... not one of those Drop of for 6 months and pick em back up ........ u want to learn w/ the dog ..........

Dog Health Questions: Hunting dog training?

im getting some chukkar to train my lab to flush. I want to release the bird have him flush it then repeat the process how do i get the bird to flush and still be able to pick him up and do it again??

All About The American School Of Dog Training

Recommended Answer:
Jessie is right. You shoot the bird, part of this training should also be the dog retrieving the bird. Flushing should come naturally, the had part is teaching a retriever to point, so he doesn't flush the bird out of your gun's range. Like Jessie said, use a wing on a string at first, so that he knows what he is looking for. You can't just go and catch the bird again, the gun shot needs to be part of the training, almost like a reward. Good luck.

How to Identify Good Dog Training Schools

  • You shoot it. (the bird, not the dog)

How else did you think this was going to work?

My dad always trained our hunting dogs using a wing with a string on it.

Dog Health Questions: What's the best way to get my dog to stop chewing on the door frame of my front door?

I have a golden retriever that is almost 3 and he has managed to eat away at the trim while we are away. I'm almost ready to donate him to the local seeing eye dog training faclility...

Dog Training - Advantages of Clicker Training

Recommended Answer:
He's probably bored. Do you leave him in the house alone a lot? Like most dogs, if you don't give him something to do, he'll find something, and you probably won't like it. Try not to leave him alone so much, give him chew toys, get another dog so he'll have a playmate.

He's probably too old for the dog training facility.

Universal Principles For Successful Dog Training

  • He maybe teething. I had a dog the chewed on anything wood. So I got a 2'x4' and cut it into pieces. He enjoyed them.

  • Give him a doggie bone to chew on. If that doesn't work...beat his ***.

  • well, at the pet shop they sell this spray that you put on things you don't want your dog to chew(in this case te door frame) and when he goes to chew it, for him it will taste sour and he will not like it and not chew it again.

  • I have a 1 yr. old St. Bernard and he chews really bad on the corners of our 55 gal. fish tank base. We would constantly trying to make him stop so that he would not weaken it. We were told by the vet to try this spray called no bite. It is really tart tasting, and works great. They sell it at most major pet stores. You should give it a try. it is not expensive at all and it is so worth it!!

Dog Health Questions: In-Home Dog Training Nightmare!!!!!!!?

I'm wondering if any of you have used Bark Busters as an in-home dog training service. I have an appointment tonight with them and I've been hearing some negative remarks about them, i.e. they teach you to growl at your dog to get him to obey you. If this is their only method I'm cancelling the appt. I was just wondering if anyone had a good experience with them or have used other training companies such as Canine Dimensions, etc. I'm not trying to lose all my money though!! Thanks in advance for your help.

A Guide To Your Dog Training for Law Enforcement

Recommended Answer:
No personal experience, but like you have heard negative things.
I think the name says it all for me. They tend to focus on negative methods and using punishment/corrections for behavior rather than focusing on rewarding the dog for doing the desired behavior. I much prefer positive methods of training since they are proven to work when used correctly, without risking damaging your relationship with your dog. Can you find a positive trainer? Association of Pet Dog Trainers can probably help - but be aware that not all certified trainers use positive methods. Check references.

Information Is The Key - Same In Case Of Dog Trainings

  • Eeek! I've never heard of them, but if that is the type of "training" they recommend, I'd back out fast.

Have you looked into hiring a trainer not with a company? If you call your local SPCA they can give you a recommendation (I hired the behaviorist my city's SPCA uses.) I found the price was much more reasonable than those classes (only about $30/visit...and we only needed one visit for her to teach me what needs to be done) and this woman really knew her stuff. I'm making major progress with one of my dogs I was having issues with.

  • I have never heard of them but here are some websites and videos from Cesar Millan (The Dog Whisperer) that might be of some help.

  • Ive heard fantastic things about their service. Ive also heard its expensive but worth the money. Plus they guarantee everything they do. They dont train ur dog. They teach YOU to train your dog becuz ur the one who has to live with him =D good luck.

Dog Health Questions: What is the best dog training dvd? Any suggestions?

I am fostering a catahoula/sheperd mix and he had been living in a shelter for 3 years so he doesn't have any idea on how to play or learn any obedience words. I wish to purchase a good dvd, simple and direct to the point. Nothing too expensive or too complicated.

Dog Training

Recommended Answer:
I would suggest "It's me or the dog" by Victoria Stillwell She has a TV show I watch every morning. I've used a lot of her tricks and the little mutt my DIl brought with her that was driving us all crazy is behaving like a perfect little angel. I'm even learning to like her. (The dog).
It is based on positive reinforcement. and has tackled some of the worst dog problems I've ever seen.

Dog Health Questions: I am thinking about doing a little dog training. What can anyone tell me about their experiences?

I have trained my own dogs for hunt tests, which are similar to field trials. Anyway, I have been thinking about placing some ads to see if I can get a few customers for basic obedience. At this time I have not attended any formal training other than some videos and group training sessions. Has anyone tried to do something like this part time? Thanks.

Dog Training - Consistency vs. Habitual

Recommended Answer:
I just started my own business doing dog training. I'll let you know how things turn out ;)
I've never been to a formal training school or anything like that either. I've read books, watched videos, TV shows, etc. I've trained my own dog. There aren't any real requirements to become a dog trainer, but you probably do need to check your state laws. But if you work under another company they may have requirements for you to fill.
