Dog Health Questions: Dog's eye?

...is 'crying' but it is pus. This morning he had crust formed along the lids. Wiped it clean, pus is still forming. The white of his eye is a little blood shot compared to the other clean one. Don't see any foreign material in or around the eye. Any one know what's going on? Does this merit a vet visit? Or one of those random things that dogs get that will clear up on its own?

P.S. We went to "Puppy Play Time" at the dog training facility we go to last night. He played with other puppies and there was one that someone had found abandoned on the road a day ago. This pup was dirty, smelled really bad and limped. Don't even know why they brought it. Shots and clean fecal samples are required for dogs to play but do you think my dog could have caught something from this other little guy?

P.S. my guy is a 7 month american bulldog

Are you sure he didn't get his eye scratched in midst of playing? Thats probably what happened. Keep it clean and try to put warm damp face cloths on it...

Time To Find Out More About Appropriate And Efficient Dog Training

  • Your pup has an eye infection.
You will need anti-biotic ointment from vet to clear up effectively.
    gd. luck.

  • infection. I'd call the Vet..

  • Your dog may have picked up conjunctivitis, take him to the vet for an exam and see if he needs any treatment / antibiotics.

  • go to the vet immediately, we didn't ,and my golden had an eye removed ! Why take chances?

  • I would not panic for a few days.

  • Go to the vet at once, u idiot!

Yeah, he could've contracted something from the other dog.

Just take him to the vet at once without wasting any time!

  • Their eyes bulge out more then other. He could've scratched the cornea. i think it warrents a vet visit.

  • I too have an American Bulldog. Her eyes get really red every night and somtimes form crustys. She has always done this, she is 3 and white and Brown. I think its because she is tired and it dosn't seem to bother her. However, if this is a new occurance, then it could be a infectection of sorts. I would wait a few days and if it dosn't clear up then go to the vet. I just clean my dogs eyes every morning and she is good to go.

Dog Health Questions: Dog training question?

We adopted "Marley" a lab mix age 2 from the animal shelter 2 weeks ago today. He was hell the first day but got better every day. He was in the shelter for over 2 months, and knew no commands and did not know what to do with a leash. Now he sits, lays down, stays, and I can put a treat on his paw and say leave it, and he will until I say "OK". He walks fairly well on a leash, but pulls for a few blocks each time until he finally realizes that he HAS TO HEAL!! He has been very easy to train EXCEPT for his jumping upon people and not running out the door when it comes open. He will stay anywhere and for any amount of time until that door opens then he is a mad dog and no treat, command or words will break his resistance for bolting to the door. Any suggestions on helping my beast??

Oh, he is due for his neuter on Monday (tomorrow YAY!). Will that help some too?

Small Dog Training - Small Dogs Need to Feel They Are Pleasing You

Recommended Answer:
He sees the open door as the cue to go out.

Teach him (using a leash at first for doors to outdoors, and doing it off-leash using his crate or doors between rooms indoors, so there is no danger of his getting out) three things --

- that the door opening is the cue to go to the middle of the room - use treats!

- that, when coming out of a crate or going through a door, he should turn and reorient back to you, rather than zooming straight ahead - use treats!

- that, if you are taking him out, he has to wait for a specific cue to go through the door.

Teach him a ritual for greeting people -- sit, wait, kiss, give paw -- whatever combination you want, and ask for those things in setting where you know he'll be tempted to jump.

BTW, you might also teach him to heel by choice, indoors and off-leash, and ask for that behavior outdoors, so you don't have to go through those first few blocks of his getting what he wants by pulling.

You sound like a good teacher, and willing to do the work -- you'll have a great dog!

Dog Training Advice - What Or Who Do I Believe?

  • When he jumps up I'd hit him with a rolled up newspaper or magazine. not hard, just enough that it will startle him. At the same time issue a command like no jump, down, stand. for the door have him on a leash and have some one els walk in the door/ring the door bell. when he starts to pull/run towards the door give te leash a tug and tell him NO.

  • My dog does the same thing!! Go search any blue pit and it will look like my dog, Koda. I have a choke chain for her (a nice one that doesn't leave marks) and it just gives her a pinch on the neck. When I go in or out the door, I tell her to sit down before I open it. And I tell her to stay.

  • Yes, neutering will help. You have a fast learner there. With a little more training he's going to be a great dog.. Good luck.

Dog Health Questions: Dog training for a pit bull?

My family recently fostered a pit bull ( THE SWEETEST LAP-DOG) and she just got adopted by a couple.

The dog got excited or anxious and chewed their couch up. She also started chewing on a piece of carpet their cats started to pull off the floor. They don't have a doggy day-care near by and i'd hate to see them give the pit bull back. So if anyone knows of any good trainers or classes.. or even techniques (in the MD area) please answer this question!!

And she some how opened the crate and let herself out. So crates aren't an option!

How to Explore the Numerous Advantages of Online Dog Training

Recommended Answer:
Yes crates are an option. She should not be left alone unsupervised in the house one cause she obviously chews it up. Two there are cats in the home. They are setting this dog up to fail.

Shock collar is not an option in this situation cause they are not home when the behaviors are occuring. Someone would have to teach them how to properly use the collar.

There are ways to lock a crate. If she still continues to get out there are crates like this.....http://homeandkennel.petedge.com/ProSele…

expensive but well worth the money. I own 6 of them.

Sounds like the dog has SA seperation anixety (at the moment) and for the safety of the dog, cats and home she does need to be crated. Even if kept in another room she is gonna shred that room.

They need a behavorist if it is SA and a trainer for basic obedience. They are two different things. There are people out there that are both.

I own Pit Bulls and other dogs and a cat. They are never left alone unsupervised. . Expecting to much to fast. You don't adopt a new dog and just expect it to know what to do.

It needs to go through a two week shut down.

“The First Two Weeks – Give'em a Break!”
why?

If I could stress one of the biggest errors people make with new dogs and foster dogs it is rushing the dog into the new world so fast . This shut down gives the dog a chance to say “ahhh” take a breath and restart into its new world.

From people I have helped I hear;
"I introduced her to 15 people the first day I had her!" ;" he was a bit leery but seems to like my other 3 dogs" ; "she went everywhere with me "
All in the first few days of the new home..... (!!!)

two weeks later we hear;
" I think we will have to rehome the new dog" "the new dog barked and nipped at my kid"
"we had a dog fight" ; “the new dog barked at me for moving him off the couch”

Ok, folks, here it comes, some feel this is extreme, why? I really do not know.
But when bringing in a new dog, post finding, adoption, buying, etc, Give it time to adjust to you and your family and the dogs in the new environment.
Just as if it were a new baby or puppy, we wouldn't think of rushing out with a baby or puppy, yet with older pups and dogs we just expect them to take our lives in all at once!

TWO WEEKS - "shut down"
For the first two weeks, (sometimes even longer) a dog takes in the new environment, who is the top person, or animal, who ARE these people!? By pushing a dog too fast, and throwing too much at the dog we look like we are not the leaders, and the dog can feel it MUST defend itself , as the leader is surely no one he has met so far!
We coo , coodle, drag the dog to home to home to person to person, and the dog has NO idea who we are. We correct for things it doesn't understand, we talk in a new human language using words he does not know.
A key thing to remember is "this is the dating period NOT the honeymoon"
When you first met your "spouse or significant other”, you were on your best behavior, you were not relaxed enough to be all of yourself, were you?
Just think of the things you do physically once you get to KNOW a person,
you wouldn't run up to a stranger and hug them and squeeze them!
Imagine, if on the first date, this new person, was all over you touching you and having their friends hug you and pat you on the head, and jostle your shoulders, looked in your mouth then he whisked you off to another strangers home and they did the same thing.
Would you think this person normal and SAFE? Wouldn't you feel invaded and
begin to get a bit snarky or defensive yourself? Wouldn't you think to push these people away for obviously your date is out of their mind, as they aren't going to save you from these weirdoes!!
Yet we do this very thing to our dogs, and then get upset or worried that they aren't relaxed and accepting of EVERYTHING instantly!

By shutting down the dog, it gives the dog TIME to see you , meet YOU, hear and take in the new sounds and smells of your home and all the people in it. In the 1st two weeks;
.
Crate the dog in a room by itself if possible.(Believe me, dogs are sensory animals, they know more than you think without seeing it).
Leash the dog (so I don't have to correct it ..you don't have that right yet!), give it exercise time in the yard on lunge line or in fenced yard..but other than that.. LEASH , (yes..leash in the house too.)
Do no training at all, just fun exercise and maybe throw some toys for fun, leash the dog if you don't have a fence outside. But DO NOT leave the yard, AT ALL.
No car rides, no other dogs, (unless crated beside them), no pet stores, no WALKS even, nothing but you and household family, your home, your yard. (Unless of course the dog needs to go to the vetinarian)
Believe me dogs can live two weeks without walks. Walks are stressful for there is so much coming at you and your dog! And the dog has no clue who you are yet. The dog may react to something and we start correcting it with the leash and we just installed a VERY STRESSFUL moment to the dog in what should be a fun and learning walk.

TEACH the dog by doing the shut down, that YOU are the one to look to, that you are now here for the dog! He can trust in you and look to you for guidance.
Then you can venture out into new situations one at a time, the dog knows he can trust in his new humans and can relax under the fair guidance of his new leaders!

In the house take the dog out only for about 20-30 minute intervals , post excercise/yard times.,and ALWAYS on a leash when in the house or in an unfenced yard.
Exercise is important! Running and free time are stress relievers, but don't set your dog up for failure, make exercise and yard time fun and relaxing and tiring!

Then PUT THE DOG AWAY. let it absorb and think and relax. Ignore crying or barking, just like a new born baby, he must find security when you are not right there, and if you run to him each time he will think barking and crying will get your attention.
I do not introduce resident dogs for these two weeks, they can be side by side in the crates, (not nose to nose for they can feel defensive) . Some dogs will bond instantly with the other dogs if we don't bond FIRST with the dog, and this can lead to some other issues, as the dog will look to the other dog(s) for guidance and not YOU!

Literally in two weeks you will see a change in the dog and begin to see its honest and true personality.
Just like a house guest.. they are well behaved and literally shut down and “polite” themselves these first few weeks, then post this time, they relax and the true personality begins to shine thru.

so, please,, if nothing else for your new dog, give it the time to LEARN YOU as you are learning who they are!
This method works on shy dogs, confident dogs, abuse cases, chained dogs that come in, rowdy dogs, all temperaments!

Dog Training Secrets

  • get a crate with a combination lock
if she opens that ill take her

  • pit bull do hate loud nosies try something with that , or make it an outside dog

  • Tell them to get a better crate and place more locks on it. Putting the dog in the crate is the only way to make sure the dog doesn't get into trouble when they are gone until the dog can be trusted. Obedience training is a good idea to start with, look in the yellow pages for dog training classes. Here is a good website to look up any info needed.

  • Shock collar. Don't listen to people who say it's mean. They are powerful smart dogs and it is the most affective way to train them. They should never ever hit a pit bull. She should have formal training too, but a shock collar will help them keep control in the house.
But you have to always test the collar on yourself first, if you set it too high thats just cruel. Too low and it won't work.

Dog Health Questions: Dog training?!?

I have a shih tzu/ coton de tulear mix! It is about 2 years old. It is verrrrryyyy hyper most times and is easily DISTRACTED. i need to know a good way to teach him simple commands like sit, lay, shake, up, down and drop but its really hard! He only knows sit and that is if i have a treat for him! I love him to death but i want to teach him these things. If you have any good sites or if you know anything please tell me.best answer gets IMMEDIATE TEN POINTS thanks again!

Positive Reinforcement Dog Training

Recommended Answer:
Hold a dog biscuit in your hand and make a movement and say sit (slowly bring your hand up like you're weightlifting) and then if the dog doesn't follow the command push the back of the dog (butt) to the floor and praise them and give them the biscuit and later on they will do it once they see the command or hear sit. It's the same for the rest except for like lay you hold the biscuit between theirs legs and they lye to eat it.

Dog Clicker Training vs Compulsion Based Dog Training, Which is Better?

  • Obedience classes. Your vet will recommend a good one and they will help you teach your dog to work through distractions. Good luck.

  • Best place is a local training center....

She will learn to work around other dogs and with lots of distractions

  • ok i have a 7 month old chihuahua the very small type and he is just like your dog, hyper as can be. So it will take time, and patience, but get small training treats from your pet store, and lead him with the treats to do what you want out of him. First off just manuever your hand w/treat to sit, lay, or whatever, a couple times, then start adding the word sit, lay, down etc....Once he hears the word he will think oh, thats what you want me to do. Then after you know the dog has the training down, do random treats, for example only give him treats every so often, after that you can stop giving treats for everything you ask him to do.

Dog Health Questions: Dog training classes?

I have a verrry spoiled chihuahua, I was thinking of putting him in training classes at our local petstore which teaches him basic commands, house manners, socializing etc. He has gotten bad, meaning nobody could come near me because he snaps at them, if anything comes to my house he'll snap at them, if other dogs try to play with him, he tries to attack them..Has anyone used these classes? Should I try it?

Proven Dog Training Methods

Recommended Answer:
The issues you've expressed are often associated with your dog's breed. They can be helped.

1 on 1 behavior modification is best. I'm partial to Caesar Millan's show, "The Dog Whisperer", but there are many good behaviorists out there. Caesar has videos you can purchase (I've included his site below).

I put in a search for dog whisperer training videos and discovered there are quite of few of these people out there. Good luck on your search.

(We have recently received a 4 yo poodle from a family who could no longer keep her. She had never seen horses, much less, giant drafts. We have applied some creative methods to help her get comfortable in their presence. She is getting better at allowing them kissing her in the face - without snapping at them. She's been with us 2+ mos and we've taken this very slowly with her. I've included her photo site with the horses, too.)

Who Let The Dogs Out? Pointers For In Home Dog Training

  • ive heard the trainers are very good and that they dont abuse the dog.i think it is a good idea

  • It is well worth a try!

  • It's an okay idea, but a better idea would to be to find a real trainer - not one at your local pet store. Personally, if your dog was in a class I was in, I'd be annoyed, since it sounds like your dog needs more than basic obedience. Please, find a great trainer, and do some one-on-one work before joining a class.

  • if you want to go extreme this is what worked for me: I have a jack russel chihuahua (who is also very spoiled). she got so antisocial she started to act vicious toward me (her owner since she was a puppy). so we asked the vet what to do, and she gave us the perfect solution: adopt a totally mellow dog to balance her out. it worked!

  • I think it'd be best if you find a real experienced trainer/behaviorist. Not so much the pet store trainer. Your dog has behavioral problem. He needs guidance, not learning sit and down.

  • Don't go to a local petstore ... they are the most expensive ...... go to a local Obedience Training place ......... Look around n shop ......
ALways want to make sure they let u attend ..... not one of those Drop of for 6 months and pick em back up ........ u want to learn w/ the dog ..........

Dog Health Questions: How do you train your dog?

Do you hire a dog trainer or you buy a book on dog training? Or do you already know how to do it? I am not successful in training my dog and no matter how much i try he remains untrained and unwilling to listen.

"Dog Care" - The Reason For Dog Training

Recommended Answer:
Sounds like you need a professional trainer. I am doing the house training thing right now and read a few different things online and kind of just combined a couple. Good Luck!

Dog Training Clicker - Why Use a Clicker?

  • I've always trained my own dog (Though sometimes I've had to use the help of the internet to learn how to do it). I would say the next thing, if you dog refuses to listen, would be to take it to some public obedience class. You could also hire a dog trainer to work with just you and your dog alone, so he could help you and your dog personally.

Good luck with your dog, I hope it goes well!

  • Dog Trainer. Dont go to petsmart or none of that retail bullshit though. I have worked at a dog kennel for six years and we also had a dog trainer that went through the "Tom Rose School of Dog Training" and he is very highly qualified in all training techniques. The classes were 6 weeks and $150 well worth it. My dog can walk off leash, listens to commands, very friendly, and knows right from wrong. He was adopted from a shelter. He is a mix breed of golden retriever and german shepherd. Also, Neutered which makes a big difference in behavior. I hope this info helps. Good Luck!!

  • I trained my own dog. She is a corgi/border collie and she is now pretty darn close to perfect. i get compliments about her good behavior all the time. she is my child, so what i did like other parents do, is spank her when she's bad and send her outside. it doesn't have to be hard but enough to get the point across that what she did was bad. that could be a start? but my boyfriend's dog does not react to that, she is a jack russle/pit.
    it's not cruelty, it's discipline.
    good luck.

  • Obedience classes. Cheaper than hiring a trainer, more effective than reading a book.

OTOH, I always recommend My Smart Puppy by Brian Kilcommons. It comes with a dvd, and he has a website, too: www.mysmartpuppy.com

  • I do it myself. I do go to a training club I belong to also, but I do training that they do not...There are lots of places to get help with training. Do a search!! RubysBoxers

Dog Health Questions: What's the best way to get my dog to stop chewing on the door frame of my front door?

I have a golden retriever that is almost 3 and he has managed to eat away at the trim while we are away. I'm almost ready to donate him to the local seeing eye dog training faclility...

Dog Training - Advantages of Clicker Training

Recommended Answer:
He's probably bored. Do you leave him in the house alone a lot? Like most dogs, if you don't give him something to do, he'll find something, and you probably won't like it. Try not to leave him alone so much, give him chew toys, get another dog so he'll have a playmate.

He's probably too old for the dog training facility.

Universal Principles For Successful Dog Training

  • He maybe teething. I had a dog the chewed on anything wood. So I got a 2'x4' and cut it into pieces. He enjoyed them.

  • Give him a doggie bone to chew on. If that doesn't work...beat his ***.

  • well, at the pet shop they sell this spray that you put on things you don't want your dog to chew(in this case te door frame) and when he goes to chew it, for him it will taste sour and he will not like it and not chew it again.

  • I have a 1 yr. old St. Bernard and he chews really bad on the corners of our 55 gal. fish tank base. We would constantly trying to make him stop so that he would not weaken it. We were told by the vet to try this spray called no bite. It is really tart tasting, and works great. They sell it at most major pet stores. You should give it a try. it is not expensive at all and it is so worth it!!
