Dog Health Questions: I am trying to potty train my dog(yorkshire Terrier) but it seems so hard he will not use the bathroom outside

instead he holds himself till we come in the house and usses it in the house and he always goes to the bathroom in the cage and everywher PLEASE HELP I NEED MY DOG TRAINED!!!! i love him to death but if he doesnt get trained he gotta go.

Which One of These Four Dog Training Mistakes are You Making?

Recommended Answer:
Don't come in from outside until he goes. I'm sure you'll be out there waiting a long time the first couple of days, but you've let him get into the habit of going in the house and now have to break him of that.

If he absolutely won't go outside, when you bring him in, keep him teethered to you (put his leash on and tie it to your belt loop). He will have to go everywhere with you and will then not have the opportunity to mess in the house.

Take him out every 20 minutes until he goes. You'll have to do this for a least a week solid.

Know The Basics Of Dog Trainings

  • Have you thought about trying to get a dog trainer to help, they are probably the best people to ask. But the way we solved our dog doing that was by shouting at him every time he did, before shoving him outside. When he went to the toilet outside we rewarded him.

  • Keep your dog on a schedule and limit his water intake until you get him potty trained. Of couse, put the water down and let him drink his fill, but then take it up. Same goes for his food. You can use pee pee pads if he is an inside dog along with your daily walks. Pads are treated with a substance that atracks them to go there. Pads are better than newspapers, which are messy and fall apart. Besides, they could mistake the one you haven't read yet, lying on the living room floor as a place to go and etc. Try to catch them in the act and quickly take them outside if you can. (again if they are inside dogs, take them to pad)taking them to the same spot each time is imperitive. Give them a reward ie: sm. treat, verbal praise, petting and loving, etc. But, wait until they are through..LOL! They usually will let you know they need to go though they're body language. Circling, smelling, raising the tail, squatting or hiking, etc. You can also make a noise, blow a whistle, throw an empty coke can or bottle with some rocks or marbles in it, it makes a loud shaking noise...then promptly take them to where you want them to go. Remember...don't throw the can AT them just close by or better yet, just shake it. You can also use a spray bottle with just water in it or mix it with just a little bit of vinegar and mostly water. Hang it on your pants, leave one in each room and make a noise and say, EHEH, you go over here, etc. I call it the grandmother noise! The word "no" becomes common place and they learn to ignore it. They will react to your body language and the sound of you voice just fine. Well, hope this has answered your question...sorry if I rambled. Good luck!!

  • Take some of the urine (like on a towel or newspaper) or buy "wee wee pads" and put them outside where you want your dog to go. It will take patience, but if he smells his scent outside he will be more likely to go out there. Wait outside until he goes, and don't let him back in until he does so. When he finally goes PRAISE him a ton. He'll get it. Also, buy some urine scent remover and clean his cage really well, so that he doesn't associate the cage with peeing.

  • For starters feed him in his crate, and that should stop him from going in his crate. Then take him outside every 1/2 hour and say the words "GO POTTY", then when he does throw him a party, get excited, "GOOD BOY" "GOOD POTTY", then give him a treat. With in a few days if you are consistent with this he will learn that its a good thing to go outside.

If he makes a mess in the house don't rub his nose in it, or beat him, or yell at him (would you do that to a child?) Look at the mess and in a stern, disappointed voice say bad, bad, bad, then put the dog outside and clean up the mess. Don't let him see you clean it up.

Housebreaking is not a fun, easy, or enjoyable time for anyone. It takes time, energy, being consistent, and persistent.
I hope this has helped. Good luck.

  • You didn't say how old he was. If he is under 10 weeks then he will not have bladder control. But this is the cure, tryed & tested a hundred times over.
First of all, next time he wee's, place some newspaper over it to soak it up. Lots of wee's soaked up with the same bit would be better. Also collect one of his poo's.
Take the piece of news paper & the poo outside & put them on the ground where you would like him to go.Put some bricks on the corners of the paper to stop it blowing away. Put the poo nearby.
Feed him in his cage as they don't like to go toilet where they eat.
( Not always the case with really bad cases though! ) but do it anyway. Place the cage on a table or something similar the higher the better. Keep it up there all the time. Dogs don't like to go toilet while high up in the air. It's a ground thing! From now on you must take him outside near the paper & stay with him without saying a word with your arms folded. Once outside starts to smell like a toilet area & inside doesn't he should start to improve quiet quickly.

  • I'm sorry to say but you have to be patient. Yorkies are very hard to house train. It can take a year. I have a 2 yr old and it took him a yr to know to go outside. All I can say is when you get up take him out as your walking to the door continue to say Need to go outside. Once your outside continue to say go potty. If he doesn't go and bring him in and take him out in again in 10 min. Is his cage a big one, If so that isn't helping you. You can get one just big enough for him to move in. They come with a divider and to start with only give him enough room to lay in. After awhile, you can move it back. If he pees move it back. He'll learn not to potty where he sleeps. But I can't stress enough that it takes time to train a yorkie. You must be patient. You don't need to get rid of him you should have read up on the breed first.

  • For comprehensive advice on toilet training, go here http://www.dogchatforum.com/forums/index… and read through the thread for the housetraining guide (scroll to the bottom, it's the 4th post up). It is written by a dog trainer and animal behaviourist. I have used her methods successfully to housetrain a 3 and a 12 year old dog as have many people I know. You need to really concentrate and dedicate a few days to doing it, they get the hang of it.

Dog Health Questions: (UK) Dog Trainer Apprenticeship, dog based work possibilities? to get into the doggy world?

Ok basically i would like to get into dog training, ive looked at uni courses but they are either to biologically scientific or are too based to horses and are non-practical. I would rather work specifically with dogs only to:
a) further gain more knowledge and understanding of their behaviour first hand
b) to have someone show/teach me ways to interact with dogs.
c) to have PRACTICAL experience with dogs on a regular basis

Im 20, been working full time in an office environment since i left college a couple of years ago and to be honest the stress of it all has already got to me, which is NOT good.

Ive never really had any goals in life career wise - no direction at all. The reason why i have found the path "dog trainer" is:
a) Parents recently got a puppy, i moved out just before it arrived so not really mine unfortunately. However myself and my parents are first time dog owners thus i have a real interest in understanding the species, trying to understand dog behaviour. Wanting to bring balance to the dog, to be able to understand when my dog is intimidated so i can protect her as a pack leader.
b) really like the show "dog whisperer" with cesar millan - love how he lets dogs be dogs and the whole pack leader and energy thing.
c)had a dog trainer round for my puppy and it was a real eye opener into the dog world.
d) this sounds really stupid i know, but i would also like to go down this path to find who i am and to have a better more active lifestyle.

Anyhow, getting a bit off topic there (sorry first time on here)

Does anyone know of any dog trainer apprenticeship in dorset preferable closer to the coast than Shaftesbury. Or any practical dog themed jobs even if its just a weekend job or work experience?

Also i would like advice on if this would be a good career path considering my reasons for it.

Sorry bout the length of this, thanks to any and all that read.

Dog Training Tricks - Cool Dog Tricks To Teach Your Dog

Recommended Answer:
It sounds like you are definitely interested in dogs, but before you choose this path I think you need a little more experience with it and with dogs. Start by volunteering at a dog training school. There are some great schools out there that use positive reinforcement methods. The instructors will give you some great tips and you will learn how to read and interact with dogs. Often times when volunteering with dog trainers other opportunities open up, like going to conferences on certain dog behaviour topics. This can really help you focus on what you want to do with dogs: do you want to have your own training school and teach families and their dogs the basics in obedience and manners? do you want to rehabilitate and rehome abused and abandoned dogs? do you want to work with aggressive dogs?

I would say just start with volunteering after work at a dog training school. They are usually a couple of hours in the evenings. You start by greeting the owners and dogs, the instructor leads the class and you learn from the instructor and help students where you can, then clean up after classes are over. This is a good way for you to learn to read dogs when the dogs are almost always friendly.

If you do decide you want to become a dog trainer than ask the trainer you are working with how they got started. That is the easiest way in to the dog training world. Working with trainers and other people and their dogs will also give you an in in the dog world in general.

Good luck!

Dog Health Questions: Please help? Career training dogs professionally?

I love dogs, and my heart keeps saying professional dog trainer when I think about what I want to do for a living. I am interested in knowing if I could become a trainer for the government (police k-9, military, drug dogs, search & rescue, etc.)? What type of degree do I need? How can I get started? I'm getting involved in Schutzhund, a dog sport similar to police dog training, and I really enjoy it (I'm a decoy, but trying to find out if I can shadow and aid the trainers). My mom needs to know if this career will have health insurance? How much could I make per year?
I need to know about health insurance because I'm diabetic.

Dog Health Questions: Have to get rid of my dog?

I've had my dog a little under 2 years. She is a rotweiller / Charpe mix. I love her, and wouldnt of ever thought of getting rid of her, ever, in my life time, but heres the problem. She is a very bi-polar animal. She can be so sweet and happy and hyper, but then sometimes she acts like she has been severly beaten by me, and shows a huge sign of permissive behavior which includes peeing, cowaling, and even crying very loud, 99% of the time when I approach her, go to play with her, even when some friends go to pet her. I have been dealing with this for over a year, so trust me I've tried everything, expensive dog training, group dog training, individual dog training, taking her to the vet to see if perhaps something was wrong health wise, taking her on walks 2 times a day, socializing her daily, everything. And yet she still, even today on our walk, cowals and crys and pees whenever I am around her. She doesnt however do any of this behavior with my girlfriend, at least not as much, although there are times she still pees, and wont come from hiding under the bed or couch unless you drag her out, the whole time her screaming and yelping as if your beating her. I cannot deal with this anymore and am asking to see if anyone knows the best way to give her to another family, cause I dont want to give her to the pound.

have you tried a dog behaviorist? There has got to be a reason why she does this and if you love her you can't just give up on her.

10 Dog Training Mistakes You Must Avoid

      • Sounds like the dog is afraid of you. Do you have a loud voice? Are you a yeller? Do you have anger issues. Animals pick up on this and respond in kind. Maybe she has been trying to tell you you number one and your not responding with enough positive feed back. Lighten your tone and put some sing song to your voice. Make sure she has her own space to retreat to. Let her hide and come out on her own for a tasty snack.

      • Craigslist ...

I got two wonderful cats on there...

make sure you talk to the family though.

      • It's doubtful another family would want her: Being part rottweiler and having behavior problems won't be an easy sell.

In the end, if you manged to find someone to give her to, the family would probably end up taking her to the pound anyway. They will get sick of her problems just like you did, except they wouldn't have invested all the time and love on her so they won't have such a problem taking her there.

Dog Health Questions: Dog training help puppy?

i have a 11 week old northern inuit puppy ***** she is called zara and i need efficient ways of house training her and also she likes to chew on fingers is this just puppy behaviour and will she grow out of it~?

Dog Training - Instructions to Train Your Dog

        Recommended Answer:
I laugh sometimes especially when people say you must be firm and consistant you must do this you must do that. Your puppy is a baby as you know. I suppose its just like parenting you have to get to know Zara's signs and behaviour pattern. We have Luke he is 18 months old now (my baby) what we or should i say I did with Luke was simple. When he woke up i grabbed the ball made some weird playing noises and ran outside, he would play for a few moments and i would keep saying to him go wee wee i did this when he ate when he played and when he woke up. As soon as you Zara sniffing about get her outside i never picked Luke up as this tended to make him think he was in trouble if i rushed over and scopped him up. I would just run outside and say wee wee when he did he got a great big fuss and loads of cuddles. When he did mishap i never scolded him or shouted at him, I would simply look at him and take him outside and not play with him for ten minutes (god it was agony) but luke learned very quickly. Even at 18 months before we go to bed or out in car i still say to luke go wee wee and he does because it is a word i have associated with him when he does he gets a fuss and cuddle. even now. As for the chewing i agree this must be stopped quickly Zara does not know she is doing wrong and remember she is teething. When Luke chewed often on my toes one day i screamed out like an injured puppy and he was so sorry i ignored him for a llittle time, when he tried to chew me again i would yelp. again this made him think he was hurting me. We gave him plenty of Hide chews and rubber balls as you know puppies can be very destructive a sharp no and a point does not injure a puppy but a scolding does. You have a lot more to come but you will get there and in the end you will have the perfect girl. Gd Luck and Love to Zara x x

Dog Training - Instructions to Train Your Dog

        • Try this resource

        • For housebreaking, use a crate. When you are not able to watch the dog, crate her. Make sure she has adequate time outside of the crate with you. Get her on a feeding and walking schedule.
When you take her outside, always go to the same area of the yard. this will become her "potty spot". When she goes outside, a lot of praise, petting, and the occasional treat.

As for the chewing, do not allow it. This is not something she will out grow. When she chews, a firm "no", give her something of her own to chew on. She will be teething, if she hasn't already, and will need something firm to chew.

        • As far as the house training- take her out every 30 minutes or so and don't go back in until she has gone to the bathroom. Also, try to take her out the same door all the time. She will associate this door with going to the bathroom. I also always gave my dogs a treat after they went outside. The chewing on your fingers is a puppy thing, but don't let it get out of control. Set limits now or it will become a bigger problem in the future. Try a nylabone for puppies. Good Luck!

        • The chewing is just a sign of teething. Get her some toys before she starts on shoes!!! Get some puppy pee pads from the store and place one in each room. Show her to each one and let her sniff it. Then the next time she goes (inside or outside), take her to one of the pads. Soon or later she will use the pad when needed.

all was put the pan or papper in the same palce so she will know werw it is at all time and pick a plce out side and ever time you take her out make sure to go to the palce you pick ou and say good and her name get same to keep her in whin you are at work are not home and whin you fee of water the pup that her out becouse 10 min she will use thr bath romm dont for get that and the time time the pup is pup is palying in the house have papper or puppy pad down in the room you are in whit the puup you need to do same thing about it whins the pup is doing or she or he me not know why you are doing what you are doin i hope this hlape you if you need to know more about pupa you e-mail me at baby20tx@yahoo.com

        • I would recommend crate training her first, it will help you not only in potty training but all other aspects of training. If any professional trainers are willing to help me at a more extensive level then I would greatly appreciate it if you could send me a message and we could correspond through e-mail.

I'm getting him for my granny she alone until i get from school and work from 7 am until 10 pm
for some people that say" What if he bites somebody" their in our yard to be bitten
        how do i train him

        Top 10 Dog Training Mistakes

        Recommended Answer:
take your dog to obidience training and all the people that you want your dog to be loyal to, they should come as well.
you can also train your dog by making sure it is good around family and friends and that strangers on your property are not welcome
just make sure he is very loyal to only the people you want him to be loyal to

        hope i helped:)

        Dog Training Basics

        • Take him to a professional training class that teaches dogs to be guard dogs. Whatever you do, DO NOT HIT YOUR DOG.

        • Actually, its ILLEGAL to have a dog trained to bite someone unless its in the K9 force.

If your dog bites someone- regardless of where- it counts against the dog, and they can sue you for any number of reasons. Three bites, and the dog has to be put to sleep because its now considered a "dangerous dog".

Get your grandmother a more reliable and less law-suit prone protection system- like ADT.

A dog can not be relied upon to know the difference between a stranger, friend, or family. A dog thats trained to bite someone that enters the yard will bite a child, man, woman or elderly- they have no filtering system.

        • You cant only professionals can a rottweiler is a natural guardian and will protect from strangers on its own if you push it too much the only thing it will attack is you why do you think you hear of rottweilers attacking their own owners because they are like you want a dog for a macho image and dont treat it with the respect it deserves so the dog attacks the owner, rottweilers are very intune with their surroundings if you try to make it do something which it does naturally with absoloutly no knowledge on dogs by the sound of you you will be asking for it.People like you should not own guardian breeds the poor dog is obviously going to go in incapable hands, you ask the person who your getting it off this same question and you will find any sane person will tell you to get lost.Get a life and stop giving breeds of dog a bad name its people like you that give them one in the first place.

        • Hello,

I think you should train your dog to be a people-friendly dog. It will help your dog to develop his social skills. Although they have a stage that they feel so sensitive to their environment, it would still better to teach him to be more comfortable around people. A well-socialized dog may still be aggressive in some ways. However, socialization ensures your dog to interact with unfamiliar dogs and strangers confidently. Good luck

        • Socialize your dog to your family and friends. Bring them out to your yard and let them give the dog a treat. Have your family wear a sweater or t-shirt so their smell can be introduced to the dog be for them. It takes time and effort on your part to train a dog, if you don't have the time, then don't get it, it will be a big mistake. Get a muzzle for the dog and make him wear it until he knows who is a part of the "pack". Never strike your dog, never hit your dog and never let someone else do it either. You should rethink getting a rotti, if your granny is frail, my granny was dragged by my fathers dog and broke her hip, pulled out her shoulder, she wasn't strong enough to control him on a leash.

        • You might want to reconsider training a rottweiler to be a guard dog. Your granny's homeowner's insurance may be cancelled or the premium raised because of liability issues if you do. Take him to obedience classes and socialize him properly. He's going to naturally be protective of his territory and doesn't need to be made mean. If the dog is in the backyard all the time he's not going to be much protection for granny. She's in the house. She needs a dog in the house with her to really protect her.

        • Don't train him to be mean. First of all..he is going to be nice to the family unless you are mean to him, and hit him...but second of all if someone comes in your yard, you will be surprised how he knows already that person is not suppose to be their. By the way...NO ONE will go in a yard, or in a house with a mean looking dog. So don't worry about that. But don't hit him, and don't make him an outside dog, and if you do, you don't deserve to get him.....Trust me, their are more people out their that will turn you in if you mistreat him, or leave him outside chained up. So make sure you can treat him like a pet, not a like a guard dog.

        • You need to have the dog evaluated by a trainer who knows what he is doing in protection training.
At 6 months he is still a baby and will not be ready for serious protection for another year to 18 months.
Please do not listen to people that tell you a dog is not supposed to be a protection dog, they have no idea what they are talking about.
Some people in here continue to give dangerous answers that have absolutely no basis on reality.

In 30 years of training dogs for serious bite work I have never heard of a dog being trained in personal protection as against the law..ever!!
A personal protection trained dog is the first line of defense in case of emergency and his job is to defend the home/owners against harm, by dying if need be.
People need to grow up and realize that the truth about dogs is not based on fantasy or Disney, it is based on reality that may not at times be pretty, but, it is nonetheless real!!!
No dog I have ever heard of was put to sleep because it defended its home or property from a would be assailant, ever.
          Hope I helped!!

Dog Health Questions: Want to Know the 10 Most Common Dog Training Problems?

I am doing research and am trying to locate the top problems that owners have with their dogs. I would imagine that housebreaking, etc would be on the list...but I am looking for a survey that details what dog owners state as their most common problems.

Dog Training Schools - Which Dogs Are Best Suited

        • I wouldn't put housebreaking on the list because almost everyone is pretty focused on starting that early. It may be the biggest one people think of but there's tons of nutcase dogs that won't pee in the house

          My top 10 would be:
          1. Not getting the dog enough exercise- it's hard to train a hyper dog
          2. Disciplining the dog way to long after the incident (actually that one has to do with housebreaking among other things)
          3. Not being consistent
          4. Improper socialization
          5. Failure to properly train recall
          6. Constantly repeating commands and not enforcing the first one
          7. Training like you dog can reason (no she's not actually trying to piss you off, even though it might seem like it)
          8. Not spending enough time training on a regular basis
          9. Excessive use of physical discipline
          10. Not crate training or doing it improperly

        • There are many training problems. I will say, though, that the most COMMON training problem is ignorance and stupidity on the owners part. Most "major" problems are easily trained out with time, effort, and the proper methods for THEIR dog (if a method isn't working, try something else!)

As far as my most common problems:
My dog pulls sometimes. However, he is in extensive private training, and it is quickly becoming a fading problem.
And... that's it, really. No other problems here. It's all about time and commitment.

        • Potty training, Aggressive issues, Obsessive behaviors ect. barking, howling,Destructive behavior, damaging, destroyed, Socialization. Feeding and training schedule. and more.
