Dog Health Questions: Dog training?

I'd like to find out what your prefered method of house training a puppy is. My 11-week-old dachsund puppy was trained by the folks who owned his mom to go on a hard, flat surface. This is a problem, b/c we have all hardwood floors and a gravel driveway. I'm so so sick of cleaning up puppy crap; please help me!

Successful Dog Training Tricks

Recommended Answer:
When you see your puppy circling, sniffing, or any other behavior that you have seen right before he used the bathroom in the house, say "go outside" and pick him up and bring him directly outside to the place you want him to use the bathroom. Once outside, tell him "go potty". It will take a little time, but he will understand what you want. To make it easier on you, tether him to your belt loop with his leash whenever possible so you can keep your eye on him at all time. When you are unable to tether him to you, restrict his access to only one or two rooms in the house. It will make it much easier on both of you...he won't have too many choices on where to go and you won't have so many places to check.

Do not train him on puppy pads. It only teaches them that using the bathroom on the floor (or on things on the floor) are okay. I did this with my toy poodle when she was a puppy and at 2 years old I STILL have to watch the places we used to put down the pads or she will still go over there...even though there is nothing but tile there now.

Good luck. He will get the hang of it.

3 Essential Dog Training Tips That Every Dog Owner Should Know

  • puppy training pads would be your best bet, you can get them almost anywhere in pet sections.
people who train them to go ion hard flat surfaces are to freakin lazy to take them outside

  • I trained my cocker mix by repetition. He was in a cage at night and as soon as I got up or him sometimes. I would say to him "Go to the door." Then show him where the door was, put his leash on and take him out. I did this everytime and he was house trained very quickly. When he went out and did his business I praised on the spot with the usual Good Boy. Oh and don't do the put the nose into the pee or poop thing. Just show them and say "No, go to the door and take him outside."

  • They sell scented sprays at the pet stores, one is for a deterrent and the other is a positive spray. I had the same problem when I got my Lab puppy from a kennel, he liked the hard surfaces. Crate training or restricting the puppy's area to start helps in damage control. I also bought the grass scented potty pads so he would get used to the odor. Eventually through repetition of constantly going out and highly praising when he did good, he got the idea. After a week he started sitting by the door and would not go any where but on grass. The sprays did work really well. Every time I sprayed the positive spray (which smells like urine) he would go outside in that general area, it helped him get the idea.

  • First, he's 11 weeks old. You are going to be picking up crap for a long time!

Take him to wherever you want him to eliminate. Give him 5 minutes to do so. If he doesn't go, take him away and either crate him or watch him like a hawk. Take him back to the spot in 20 minutes or when he shows signs of needing to relieve himself (sniffing the floor, circling, wandering away, whining, etc.). Once he does go in the right place give him lots of praise and a treat. If outside, you can also stay out longer and play or go for a walk.

Dogs generally need to eliminate when they wake up, after meals and after periods of high activity. At his age, your pup will likely eliminate at least seven times a day.

If he has an accident and you didn't see it happen, say nothing to him. He won't understand what you are upset about. If you see him starting to squat, clap your hands or make a noise to interupt him and then take him out to finish.

Dog Health Questions: I am looking for a dog that will likely be a great fit for my home... but here's the catch:?

1) I live in an apt. so the dog MUST be 35 lbs. or less.
2) I have a daughter (age 5) who is very respectful of animals but I can not say the same for some of her cousins (although they try.)
3) I have allergies (I don't mind a small amount of shedding- but nothing outta control)
4) I am a single parent who goes to school full-time. The dog will spend Mon. through Fri. days with a dog sitter (who has several dogs, rabbits, cats, etc.) &/or at my brother's home (he has 2 acres- fenced property w/ 2 other dogs and MANY kids!)

I would love to rescue a dog, if possible. But, my concern is that you never know the history. My daughter & I had to "return" a dog that we had and LOVED for almost two years because it kept attacking other animals (randomly, unprovoked & didn't matter if she knew them or not.) The attacks were getting more and more frequent & more and more serious. After trying dog training, behavioral therapy, naturalistic methods, etc. etc. etc.... it pained me to do so but I no longer felt safe for her (the dog) to be around my daughter.

A lot- huh? I refuse to believe that there is not a dog out there that we can love and who can also meet our needs.

Any advice?

Competition Dog Training

Recommended Answer:
If you really want to rescue a dog (which is awesome!), I think it might be more effective go to a shelter with an idea about what type of dog you don't want rather than a specific breed in mind.

That said, my boyfriend and I live in an apartment and have 2 miniature schnauzers (~18lbs). Many of the criteria you've listed match my dogs to a tee. I have allergies and my boyfriend and I have insane schedules that leave the dogs lounging about the house for 8+ most weekdays. While we don't have children, one of the dogs absolutely loves kids and the other can't stand them--it's all about socialization and exposure (the one that loves kids was around them a lot as a puppy and the other wasn't). So, I personally would recommend a miniature schnauzer, but then I'm biased so take it with a grain of salt.

No matter what breed you may go with, a good shelter should be able to tell you if a dog is good with children and other animals. It may just be easiest to go to your local shelter every couple of weeks until you find the dog that is best for you and your family.

Best of luck!

  • Get a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

  • hi i believe the perfect dog is a dachshund (sauasage dogs) as many people call them , they arevery small. fit on your lap , very easy to train, dont bark , very playful, get on with every other animal, eat anythink and drink water. ive got a couple and ive got a daughter and one on the way and she plays with them , drags them on the floor and they just lick her and play. :) its so funny but lovely to watch. she been brought up with them. they are so much fun and there happy sleeping where ever you put them and love walks but loves rests. if your interested in them you could go onto this website and there are plenty. not expensive but watch out some people are charging daft prices .

  • Well, since you live in a apartment, smaller dogs are good. Spaniels and dachshunds are good dogs to be with, playful and protective of the family. Poodles and shih-tzus are a big hairy and needs maintenance more than the usual small dogs.

  • Wait a few years until you are out of school, and your daughter will be older and able to help out.
In your situation, you cant even take the dog out without your daughter there.

Either that, or get an older dog who is already trained as you will not have time to deal with a puppy.

You are just setting your kid up for another heartbreak when you cant take care of him.

Dog Health Questions: Dog training.?

I have a two-year old, 155 lb. Bullmastiff. My dogs name is Keira. We are having some problems. I wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions. We have neighbors that live down the road about 100 ft. They have two horses and Keira ALWAYS chases them. We also have a problem with her jumping on people. She is A VERY VERY friendly dog, but she just needs to learn how to behave. A little slap on the butt doesn't affect her. so dont even suggest that. I HATE it when I am trying to watch TV and I am sitting on the floor, and she jumps on me. I CANT EVEN SIT ON THE FLOOR! And her WORST problem is that whenever Me, or my Parents are outside, she comes charging at you as fast as she can and runs into you and knocks you on the ground. When you are trying to ride a bike, she grabs your feet when you are peddling and PULLS HARD! I usually end up falling off of the bike. But PLEASE! we dont want to call a personal trainer, (or cesar millan...lol} so please dont suggest that. I love her like CRAZY!

Dog Training Advice - How To Do Obedience Training For Your Dog

  • Pigs are excellent trainers i strongly suggest you buy one or steal one from a farm that way is more fun

  • Try taking her to dog obediance. if there isnt a dog ovediance class near you, than go onto the internet and look up traing methods. i had the same problem with my to dogs and a little obediance helpped to control them. Just try simple commands eg sit, come, stay liedown and NO. Also when ever she jumps on you tell her down or no and turn away and dont pay her any attention. She isnt a bad dog she just needs some obediance put into her.

  • It is easier to train a dog for good behavior than breaking the bad behavior...It sounds like the best thing you could teach your dog is "stay". It would solve about every problem. You can go to Petsmart or Petco and buy training treats (little ones so you don't interfere with a good diet while training). Find a quiet place with little distraction...get your dog to sit, then hold up your hand palm towards the dog and give the stay command...back up 2 or 3 steps, wait 2 seconds, then say good dog and give a treat. Back up farther each time until you are able to leave their sight and come back. Give lots of praise with the treats (dogs love this the most). Slowly introduce the command with other things...such as when someone comes over

  • I recommend you visit the website I went to when my dog had behavioral issues a while back. It transformed my dog's behavior. Good Luck!

  • You have a problem! While not impossible, normal training procedures will be extremely difficult to correct your girl. If I were in your situation, I would get an electronic training collar. These collars deliver a shock to the dog when you press a remote control that is carried in your hand. They should be used ONLY when she is in the act of doing wrong! Never shock her AFTER she has done wrong. This is important..... she must be taught that there are things she cannot do. Very simple. Very effective! And lastly.... never scold her after using the collar, and always praise her when she does well. Training collars are usually available on eBay.

Dog Health Questions: Need help with dog training.?

ok well i got a 1 year old pomeranian and a 3 month old miniature pinscher. the one year old knows that when he's outside he uses the restroom but the 3 month old doesnt she thinks its play time. so she will use the restroom as soon as she gets back inside. its hard to take them out more than a few times a day because i have a baby and i really dont want to take her out everytime i take them out. so both dogs will use the restroom in the house sometimes when i dont know cause i have dark carpet and its hard to tell wher they have urinated but i can smell it and it grosses me out. i can usually let the 3 month old out without a leash and she comes right back but if i let the 1 year old out without a leash he will bark like crazy at the neighbors dogs and will take off. does anyone have any advice that will help? please i am fed up. also i do have a husband but he goes to college an work so hes gone most the day and its pretty much my job to take care of the dogs.

Important Dog Training Information

Recommended Answer:
Training is the best investment you can make in your relationship with your dog. You'll need to do your homework first, though, to learn how to communicate what you want in a way that your dog will understand. Stay consistent and patient, reward your dog for getting it right and remember: you can train a dog of any age.

Is My Jack Russell Suitable For Schutzhund Dog Training?

  • why did you get a puppy when you have a baby???????????? Puppies need a LOT of training and owner dog time, and you cant play with a dog and care for a baby at the same time, if you had to get a dog you should have gotten a adult dog that is potty trained and isnt as active....

  • Try potty pads you can at least get her trained on the idea that you only potty in certain spots then take that potty pad and move it closer to the door and such also remember to praise and treat highly when your little puppy is outside and does! potty

  • Carry the dogs a little farther away from the house then put them down to walk back. Then the girl will have no choice but potty or poo on the walk back. My dog did the pee as soon as we came in thing too, until I learned from her breeder what to do to fix that.

  • In order to train a dog.. you must have time to train the dog. A 3 month old dog has a tiny bladder and goes VERY frequently.... I don't know anyway to train a puppy without a lot of time.
Perhaps you can find books on the subject.

Dog Health Questions: Dog training making dog frustrated?

Hey everyone
our dog trainer came round today and he taught us some good stuff
he showed us something called a security lead
it is a lead that you tie to a door and it gives the dog a few feet of lead to lie and move a bit
our dog just laid perfectly for the hour, no problems the trainer would say stop if he barked and he gave him a treat and he stopped
he was perfect
then he went
we put him on it and another person came round, we did what we did when the trainer came, introduced them the right way (no jumping) and it just kept barking and barking and barking
we said stop, waited for him to stop and gave him a treat, then he would bark
the friend left and as instructed we did not let him in the lounge to stop him feeling dominant
he is outside on the security lead now
and he is still barking and barking, the treats are just making it worse as he has figured out that if he barks and then stops we give him treats
so we ignore him
but still he is barking?
what are we doing wrong?
we are doing what he said to do?
cheers for any help

Service Dog Training - How to Prepare Your Dog

Recommended Answer:
I'm not quite sure what a security lead is, but I'll try to help anyways.

The way I get my dogs to stop barking is with a command word "Enough". If they stop barking, I simply pat their head of scratch their ear. Treats are over rated and dogs will figure out that they can get treats if they're good, but they can misbehave once they have their treat.

Also, I recommend a shock collar. With a shock collar, you can stop the dog from barking without actually touching it. Here's how:

1. Once you have the collar on, leave the dog alone. Once she starts barking, go to her, and give her a command word that you want her to associate with not barking. I use the word "Enough" or "No". If she listens, praise her. Since she's figured out the treats, don't use them.

2. If she stopped barking with the command word, turn and begin to walk away. If she starts barking, stop, turn around (don't go back to her), and give the command word. If she doesn't listen, hit the shock and give the command word again. She will learn that she either listens to you, or she will be shocked. She will also associate the command word with not barking and being shocked if she doesn't listen.

3. Once you've shocked the dog, begin to walk away. If she barks still, repeat step 2. If she stops barking after you shock her, leave her alone.

You will have to work with her for a little while, but this shouldn't take more than two weeks to correct completely. Hope this helps.

Dog Training: 7 Reasons Why You Should Do It Yourself

  • Do not give your dog treats when they are doing something you don't want them to. That's going to make the problem worse. Dogs are just like kids, they will learn, but it might take a while. Don't give up on him just yet, but I wouldnt give him treats to try and quite him

  • Maybe you should tell him to stop barking and if he listins you should give him a treat and do that for a while and maybe he will get use to it???????????

  • Well you can't just tie him up for several hours a day with no outlet for his energy. Even an hour is asking too much. What a terrible trainer. He didn't train your dog, he confined him so the problem never even came about to be corrected. Your dog is going to end up with severe separation anxiety if you treat him like this and may become destructive. You need to find a trainer who will treat his issues head-on and not just cover the issues up by tethering the dog. I suggest an obedience class if you aren't already in one because structured training can work for many issues as the dog learns to interact better with humans and their commands. A class will also help socialize the dog with other people and animals.

  • You need to put a command word when you tell him to stop. "Stop" isn't telling your dog much of anything. When he barks, tell him "no bark" and when he stops as you are feeding him his treat say "good no bark". Dogs need feedback when you are training, and if they don't get any that they understand they will either tune you out, or continue what you do not want them to do.
Here is a good training site (personally, I'd get rid of any trainer that was basing his/her training on the domination principle that was debunked many years ago).

You do not need to pay a trainer when you can easily learn how to train from many of the really good training sites on the web.

Dog Health Questions: What is the cost of dog training/obedience?

I have 2 German Shepherds. 1 mail 1yr. 1 female 9 months. I want to adopt another male German Shepherd that is 21/2 yrs. What is the average cost of training do you think?

Revealed - Boxer Dog Training Secrets

Recommended Answer:
Hi there, hope your doing ok!

Here are your options for various kinds of dog training programs:

There are group dog training sessions that usually cost around $40 - $130 and that last four to eight weeks, 1 hour per session.

There are also private dog training sessions, where the trainer himself will visit your house or work place to give your dog a professional training for around two - four weeks. This type costs around $1000 - $2,500 and training session usually last longer compared to group training sessions.

Yes it is quite expensive, but you can rest assured that you will get what you pay for. Most dog trainers focus on different areas of your dog's attitude and obedience and after that training program, you will begin to appreciate the difference it did for your dog and for you. Standard training classes usually focus on addressing your dog's chewing, barking, biting and digging behavior.

Here are a few tricks that are free though

Start Using Sign Language to Communicate with Your Dog

Believe it or not, your dog never did learn to obey your voice commands. Sure, it may have appeared to obey "sit, stay, and come" or whatever else you have taught it but really your dog learned to follow some other signal. Your dog learned that when you move a certain way you want to it do the trick.

If you watch yourself, you will start seeing that maybe you pat your leg when you want it to come or raise your hand when you want it to sit. Do the sign without the words and your dog will still do the trick. In fact, teach tricks without the sign and your dog will learn faster.

Start Using Body Language

This goes right along with sign language. Many times, people wonder why my dogs don't rush the door when the doorbell rings. It is because I have taught them not to do this. I tell people I can teach their dogs not to rush the door in less than five minutes as well. (No one ever believes me.)

I have a volunteer ring the doorbell. When the dogs rush the door, I get between the dogs and the door and loom over the dogs. The dogs back away. I back the dogs up until the dogs get to a predefined point. Then, I go towards the door. If the dogs start towards the door, I turn and loom towards the dogs again until they back up past the point. It takes a few minutes but they get the point. (Sometimes I add the word "back" if they have been trained, but not always.)

This method takes a few doorbell rings for the dogs to learn that they are not to go past the predefined point. Then, I have the owners try the doorbell challenge. The owners are always shocked at how fast the dogs learn not to rush the door. It only took a little body language to learn.

Stop Yelling at the Dogs

This is actually a common mistake. The dogs start barking and people start yelling to be quiet. This is really reinforcing the behavior. In essence, you are telling the dogs there is something to bark about and you are joining in by sounding the alarm.

While this may sound odd, this is an effective maneuver. If your dogs are barking at something outside, call them inside. Even if they only stay inside for a few minutes, you interrupted the pattern and stopped the barking. If they are barking inside, send them out. The message sent is barking equals they must leave the activity and quiet means they get to stay. Never pet a barking dog.

Hope this was helpful

Dog Training Basics - Avoid These Five Common Mistakes

  • Prices vary widely. For good basic obedience, many local shelters offer classes, usually for under $100. If your dogs have any training issues, or you want more intensive training, I would expect to pay in the $150 - 200 range for a 6 - 8 week series. Some places will give a multiple dog discount if you want to bring all the dogs.

German Shepherds are super smart, so obedience class should be great fun!. Just remember training is on-going and lasts a dog's whole life.

  • Hi,
IMHO i don't like training "classes." I admit I'm being bias because i like guard dogs and and reading up on advanced dog training. If your dog is trained by other people other than yourself this can sometimes make the dog think that he can trust anyone. I know this isn't true in all circumstances.

By training you dog yourself you can save money and create a stronger bond with your dog(s). They enjoy spending time with their owners and they enjoy pleasing their owners. so if you do train the dog yourself make sure to let the dog know your impressed and happy when he does something right. they can sense if your happy or not.

Dog Health Questions: Does anyone know of any good and reliable dog training websites ?

My family and I are seriously thinking about getting a dog, pregerably a shih tzu or a lhasa apso (sorry about the spelling) but before getting one we need a lot of info about to train it, what they eat etc does anyone a really good website on where i can get this information

House-Training And Housebreaking a Dog - Training Guide

Recommended Answer:
Realize that the two breeds you mentioned have grooming issues. You will have to spend the money about every 5-6 week getting them groomed/haircut.That aside, everyone has to be on the same page as far as training.Example: if Mom doesn't want dog on furniture but kids let the dog. This confuses a dog, Take the puppy to puppy class. This generally is at about 4 months of age.He will have had enough puppy shots by then.Remember trainers are training you to train the dog.You will need to feed the pup 3 times per day a good brand of food, take him out to go potty alot to the same spot out the same door.Use a key word like"go potty" he will get the idea.Crate him when you can't watch him.I found an excellent web site that offers everything you would need it's www.jbpet.com
They have excellent customer service.Good luck getting the pup.If you haven't decided boy or girl know boy dogs are more mushy/needy and girl dogs are great and don't pee on every little thing.Good luck.

Dog Health Questions: Trying to find a book about running a dog training business?

I am looking for the single best book I could get that has the most information about starting and running a dog training business.

Also if you have any websites on the same topic that would be great

Dog Training and the Dog-Human Bond

Recommended Answer:
These are the 3 best resources that were given to me when I was researching the very same question for my sister.

1. First off, research the market you are getting into. I know this sounds like a Mr. Obvious type of statement, but there are effective, and not-so-effective ways of doing this type of research. So what would be the most effective and cheapest way to research the dog training world? I'd head on over to Mr. P's dog training pages. Tons and tons of information all geared towards the dog training subject.

2. Get a mentor or become an apprentice... the best and cheapest way to do this is either contact someone who is actively in the business (make sure they are out of your proposed territory - you will not get any help or advice from someone you may take business away from), or tap into SCORE. Go to their website and type in "dog trainer" as part of your criteria for a business mentor. It's free, and you may fall onto some retired dog trainer who will give you priceless guidance not found in any book.

3. Look at books recommended by established organizations. There are tons of how-to ebooks being marketed online today - and most of them carry inflated price tags since anywhere from 50-75% of the price goes to the affiliates who are marketing them. Sorry, but this is a truism in most cases.

Good luck in your search...

Dog Health Questions: Do you believe in positive reinforcement or correction when it comes to dog training?

I don't see anything wrong with using corrections when it comes to dog training, and yes, I do believe in positive reinforcement too, but in my opinion, you do need to correct a dog if they bite or growl, etc.

I'm asking this because I haven't had a dog for a couple years, and I am looking into getting an Anatolian Shepherd Dog.

**When I say corrections I don't mean abuse**

Dog Training Aids - Get The Right Tools For The Job

Recommended Answer:
I use a blended method of both.

As no two dogs learn in the way, have the same temperament, or necessarily motivated by the same thing, I use whatever works with the individual dog I am working with to achieve my training goals.

Puppy biting is nailed within days of its arriving home, accidentally catching a finger not the toy is ignored [not a real bite], but if a dog growled because it was resource guarding, possessive ect or redirected its aggression on me, it would be given an immediate hard correction.

My dogs are trained be clear that I OWN everything, nothing belongs to the then & I make all the decisions, including the behaviors I deem to be acceptable.

Free Dog Training Tips - Train Your Dog

  • I use positive reinforcement for all my training. The only time I correct an animal is if it is doing something I don't want it to do such as growling, barking, going for food I haven't given it.

The only correction I use is a loud PSST sound, snap my fingers or if it is on a leash a short very quick but gentle tug on the leash. Just enough to get their attention but not enough to actually turn their head . Any corrections on the leash should be gentle and to the side rather than upward.

Sometimes when training, just ignoring the dog and just standing there calmly is enough to get them to try something different to please you. This is a technique I use when doing agility training. I'll just stand by a hurdle or weave poles with a treat in my hand. Sometimes it takes quite a while but they eventually figure out you want something from them and they just start doing things to see if they get a treat. It's so fun to watch.

Dogs really want to please so your kind words and rewards can basically do all the work.

I have been training dogs for many years and I have NEVER had to hit or harm a dog in any way to get the results I want.

  • You really have to be able to read the dog and make adjustments quickly. No one form of training is correct for all dogs.
Correction works for me with most. That is how dogs do it with each other.
Of course you do reward positive behavior but if you don't correct bad behavior the dogs don't understand. It's sending mixed signals to the dog telling them it's good to do good but bad is tolerable.
Plus there are some dogs that simply don't care about pleasing the master.

  • I use a lot of +R and -P, along with Premack.

I NEVER punish a growl. That's like taking the ticker off the time bomb. It's a dog's way of saying "Hey I'm not comfortable". Sure you can "correct" or punish a growl, but you've done nothing to make the dog more comfortable with what it is. Now what you've told the dog is that it's communication doesn't work so it needs to step it up a notch. Now you get a dog who instead of growling goes straight for a snap or bite. I'd much rather have a dog say I'm not comfortable with a growl, and then work to make the dog comfortable with whatever it was.

  • i believe in both. always praise a dog when it does something you want and correct anything you see as a problem (ie. growing, possessive over toys and food) my English Mastiff was possessive of his toys when he was little so i would get it away with my foot (with a shoe on just in case) and stand over it until i was done. i made him sit and wait for it. i would fill his food dish and water bowl while i made him sit and wait and i would make him wait til i was done pretending to eat and then i would let him got. i was always the first one out the door when we went for walks and the first one in the door. if i was hooking him on a leash to go out (when it gets too late i just hook him outside) i make him sit before i even put my had on the door knob to get the leash, i would hook it to his collar and make him wait till i said it was okay to go outside. every time he did something good i rewarded him with praise and a treat (sometimes not always cause i don't want him getting over weight) if he did something wrong i scolded him with a firm NO and corrected it.

  • Why does it have to be one or another? Why can't it be both? For me, when introducing a new behavior, I use positive reinforcement. When I know that the dog understands the command (is performing the command reliably in a variety of places), then doesn't do it, that's when I go to a correction.I believe in being fair.

  • I would say that it depends on the breed. In my experience, correction works better for large, working and guarding breeds like shepherds. Positive reinforcement works very well for small toy breeds. My shih tzu thrives on positive reinforcement, but my shepherd learned better with corrections.

  • i believe in both ... like if i tell a dog to sit, i am going to positively reinforce that by saying good dog or offering a treat (if they are just learning) ... but for biting or growling, for me that is a correction ... i do not need any dog growling in play or otherwise, and biting warrants serious correction from me, as i just don't think there is ever any reason for a pet dog to think it is okay to bite ...

  • I personally believe in a good mix of the two. Positive reinforcement for positive behaviors and corrections for negative behaviors. A sharp loud noise like slapping a newspaper against your own thigh or shaking a can with coins can be a good form of correction. Our german shepherd had doorway centered aggression toward our other dog, and shouts or claps worked wonders.

  • My dogs do not bite, other than puppy play. Nor do they growl at anything not worth growling at.

The most important thing you can teach a puppy is bite inhibition, and you can do that with positive reinforcement alone.

Dog Health Questions: How do you get into Police dog training?

I am a dog training and am looking to do more of protection training (Police dog training)
Does any one have advice or know how to get into something like this without having to BECOME a cop.
I have talked with a few people and some say you need to get a dog and train it then show him and get him into things to show off how good you are.. and some say you need to become a cop..

thanks!!

Choosing Between Dog Training Schools and Animal Behavior Specialists

Recommended Answer:
Best place for you to start is a schutzhund club. Basic protection work is done here for sport. You need a good dog and a good attitude, not a badge. Although many cops do schh with their k9's too.
Be advised that not all dogs can cut it in protection work, so do your homework and get the input of schh people if you need guidance finding the right dog.

Who Let The Dogs Out? Pointers For In Home Dog Training

  • The best route is to apprentice under someone else who is already doing what you want to learn.

  • You might could do this for a private company or individual. The police do their own training of their dogs.

  • Most police dogs are bred in Germany. There are a few breeders in the U.S. but the majority of police agencies import their dogs. The breeders do the basic training and then the police agencies purchase the dogs and continue their training here. The police officers and their dogs attend specialized training schools and then continue training on their own at home. So what you'd be looking for is either breeding dogs specifically for police work or being employed one of the training schools that police agencies use to further their dogs' training.

  • i dont know how to become a police dog trainer but i know what you cant have in a police dog for eg. if a puppy has been hit by a roll of newspaper from digging the plant from a young age then when it gets older and gets scared of something that gets waved around its head like a criminals hand trying to shoo it off and the dog runs away the dog is no use ,another eg. some dogs get cautious by walking on tiles because they slip and those dogs that get scared they are no use.
