Dog Health Questions: Which dog training place is better for my jack Russell?

He is 5 years old. His former owner got him as a puppy from a breeder and kept him until about a month ago where he was with a lady. The lady gave em back to the man and he gave him to me. He is aggressive and "lungy" at my 6 cats. He does great with other dogs. I took him for an evaluation at a training school in my city. They said he is timid, has the tendency to become aggressive. Recommended their 400.00 training school. They are more aggressive with their training, also.

Enter Petsmart training. They are $109.00 and use "treat training". The other school said that doesn't work. Petsmart's trainer worked with him a little and used treats and he sat for her immediately. The guy @ the other school had to shove his behind down to make him sit. I do not know which place to take him to. Petsmart is cheaper and seems good, but he is stubborn

A Guide To Your Dog Training for Law Enforcement

Recommended Answer:
I don't recommend either. The first one uses domination over your dog as the means to make him obey. This is not teaching him to obey, or why to obey... it is just teaching him to fear you. With a dog that has aggression problems, this will only compound his issues, and he will probably get WORSE later.

I also don't recommend the Petsmart trainer. While their approach is more positive, they may not have the right tools to help you with this serious problem. A $100 obedience class is great, but it will not solve the aggressive tendencies in your dog.

I would recommend going to a a veterinary behaviorist, (a veterinarian that specializes in behavior.) They may be slightly expensive, but they shouldn't be $400.

If you don't do that, I would recommend finding a Certified Pet Dog Trainer in your area. You can find one by going here: www.ccpdt.org. These are people who have studied and taken an exam to prove that they know the science and psychology behind dog training. Not all of them may be well versed in aggressive behavior, however.

Talk to a couple trainers and ask for references of clients they've worked with that had aggressive dogs. They should be about $25 to $50 an hour.

Guard Dog Training

  • you ever thought about using a little bit of both and do it yourself and the rewards can be even greater and treats don't have to be treats they can be a favorite toy and i have known people who took their dogs to both petsmart and more expensive places and got nowhere. the key with the cats is to slowly introduce him to them by the way FYI you can pick up tips watching the dog whisperer

  • I took my Jack to puppy classes at Petsmart. I'm so happy I did. He's one of the most well behaved dogs I've had. He seemed to have fun at classes. I liked it because they don't just teach the dog. They teach you how to teach the dog, and how to be a leader to him. I wouldn't spend my time and money at a place that made my puppy sound like something was wrong with him. Not to mention the price, and they sound a little too aggressive. Learning should be a positive experience for you and your new dog, not a forced and unhappy one.

  • alright you cant stress too much about him not listening so just try being calm but assertive. the best place to go is a school where you can also be evaluated. more aggressive training is OK but treat training is too. you also need to learn how to train him and be a leader.

  • Petsmart is lousy. So what if the dog sits for a treat. You could have done that yourself without the Petsmart trainer. You need functional training, not sitting for treats.

  • Petsmart is just fine if you just want to work on basic commands and manners. Treat trainer works for all dogs that like treats for teaching basic skills. However if your dog has some aggression issues a more specialized trainer might be warranted. However the school you mention with aggressive trainers and a "school" does not really seem like the issue. If you want to work on his aggression towards cats in your home then I suggest finding a qualified trainer who will come to your home and work on this issues in the problem environment.. home with the cats. If he is good with other dogs and people the cat thing is really minor (o.k. not if you are living with it everyday but JRT and cats is not really a great match) and you don't need overall specialized training but just related to his "issues". My advice Petsmart (or similar) for basic manners and dog bonding training, tricks etc. and a specialized person to come to your home for the cat issues.

Dog Health Questions: My friends dog, her family wants to get rid of her!?

she is a yorkie chihuahua mix she was supposed to be a teacup yorkie they say she is too aggressive, my friend doesn't care about her. her sister says she likes her but never pays her any attention. they never took the time to train her which is why she is so unmanageable and aggressive. she is about 2 years old and is spayed. im thinking about offering to train her so they will keep her. im thinking clicker training, i like a challenge and im not afraid of getting bit. i trained my sisters dog and she is really obedient but she was easy because she is a people pleaser. and she was a puppy. so should i offer or not bother? i watch a lot of dog training shows so i have some tips and i guess i can always come on here for advice, i mean its worth a shot isn't it? :) thanks

Recommended Answer:
If they cant be arsed to train THEIR dog, then why should YOU go to the trouble of training it so they can keep her??

Im sorry to be so blunt but if you did train her, and they kept her, would it really be worth it, if the poor thing will just get ignored still

I think she should be re-homed with someone who wants her, and will train her, and give her the attention she needs
She sounds like she would be in good hands with you, but i dont kow your situation, so it might not be an option. Im getting the impression she's being slightly neglected.

It think you should train her to a respectful level (Her aggresion would be much better if she respected you/them whoever) and then get her rehomed one way or another

Dog Training Tips and Tricks - Ways to Make Dog Training Easy For You and Your Pet

  • I think it's worth a shot. It sounds like the dog just wasn't handled the right way. I do think though that if they truly don't care about her that she would be better off with someone else. I think you should see what you can do with her and even if the owners end up not wanting to keep her, it could make her prospects a lot better with more training. What have you got to lose? Do your best

  • Any chance to save a dogs life and prevent it from being euthanized, thrown in a pound, or dumped on the side of the road is a worthwhile opportunity. I think it would be great if you were willing to help the poor pup...Then again, you can't really make that family actually care about their pet, trained or not. Good luck. :]

  • i would sounds like a cute pup and that is better than having it put to sleep or put in a home who will possibly hurt em and if it donsne work out i would take her a one of thoose obedeince schools.GOOD LUCK

  • Go for it! It'll be worth a try. I think YOU should take the dog if they do get rid of it, if you can. Clicker training is a good idea!

  • Go 4 it!Maybe you can fix the dogs problem! We do not want anymore dogs in shelters/pounds or on the street!:]

  • I think that's a really nice thing to do. You sound like a special person. While you have the dog or just train it, it would be nice to have one of them to watch you and learn. Give the dog allot of love and attention also.

Dog Health Questions: Can somebody recommend me a good dog training school or private trainer?

My dog is an Australian Shepherd and he is 2 years old. He is very aggressive towards strangers who come near the house or us. He barks, growls and jumps at them. He doesn't stop barking and trying to get at them unless he's in a different room. If they touch him too much, annoy him a lot and stand close, he may nip them. (He nipped someone once). It has to be around Toronto, Ontario. I don't know which one is the best or who will be trustworthy. I heard of dogs like this being turned into family guard dog and not just barking and jumping at everybody they meet - even our friends. Thanks.

Dog Health Questions: Bad Breeding? HELP? Dog training/mental problem?

My dog is all the sudden 'turning' on us.
He will be a happy little dog one minute. Then his whole expression changes, and he attacks our other dogs/attacks me. No one has been injured YET. He is currently by himself constantly. And i feel horrible.
He is very depressed about being seperated from us and the other dogs. There are other times where we are playing with him, then all the sudden (his expression completely changes) he lays down and acts scared/upset/worried.
I contacted the breeder about this and she claims it's a 'training' issue. Though i have no idea how it would effect him randomly doing this. And it is not consitent problem. He will go without weeks having any problems, then all the sudden his expression changes, and something happens and he attacks/shuts down. I have tried to set him up (repeating what happened when he all the sudden had this behavior change) and he acts normal. We have been to alot of different trainers/behaviorists to look at our dog, and they do not see anything wrong. He has done this once infront of a trainer, he all the sudden shut down and was acting very scared like something was wrong. She saw his eyes kind of glazed over, his expression changed, and he acted strange. We brought him back a day later, did the same things as the previous day. Nothing happened. She also feels that there is something mentaly wrong. Several trainers have mentioned this.
So as you can see we are looking into things that could be wrong.
Any suggestions to look for? We were wondering if we should take him to a normal vet, or try to take him to a university. How expensive are universities compared to normal vets?
We have looked into a form of epilipsy. If the vet feels that there could possibly be a form of epilipsy is there any way to PROVE it?
The problem is the breeder. She will not allow me to neuter him because she wants something out of this dogs father. He is having these problems, i cannot neuter him without her written consent because of a contract.
So basically i was wondering if anyone has ever had any of these problems before, and how to deal with them, what to look into ect.
OH btw we have had a full panel of bloodwork and thyroid done. everything was normal :)
      Thank you. :)

Sorry i forgot to mention the breed!
      He is a australian shepherd.
I know now this breeder is horrible. :/ I really do not want to breed him. Like i said, she is blaming me and it's not 'his fault' it's my fault. She does not believe he has these problems, but training problems. :/

Dog Clicker Training vs Compulsion Based Dog Training, Which is Better?

      Recommended Answer:
You'd have to contact a lawyer to if you can get out of the contact since there's something wrong with the dog. I'm just not sure why you'd buy a dog from this breeder knowing how horrible she is.

What to Look For in the Best Dog Training Program

      • Wonder how she would breed the dog if he were to say "run off". Well, you could have him neutered, doubt that would change his behaviour much. But it's worth a try. Just report to her that the dog ran off, and you no longer have him. Does she live close enough to check on that?

      • It's absolutely a breeding problem. Temperament is just another thing that BYBs ignore. In NO WAY should you allow this dog to be bred. Tell her to take you to court if she wants to enforce that part of the contract, and go prepared with statments from ALL of the behaviorists & trainers you took him to, to back yourself up. I doubt she'll sue

      • The dog sounds mentally unstable to me. Contact the breeder and tell her this, and that is likely genetic and he can not breed. If she refuses to take him back or let you neuter him, get the trainer's statements on the dog and take her to court.

      • Not having him neutered is ridiculous!
She would have to be prepared to go through the courts to do anything anyways! You have plenty of witnesses to the odd behavior. If she does pursue the issue (which I seriously doubt), no court will rule in her favor.
Sever all ties with the woman & if she finds out the dog's been neutered then so be it.
To leave him intact would be irresponsible. That would be my first step & ASAP!

I really don't know how prices compare regarding university vs. GP vs.specialist.
Discuss your options with your vet & see what he suggests. Keep him in the loop.
My gut tells me that the next step should probably be a veterinary neurologist.

You still need to make sure he's getting plenty of exercise & walks. He also needs to spend time with the family. If you have to muzzle him to feel safe doing so then do it- but only when needed & for short periods. A basket muzzle will allow him to breathe normally & drink water (with practice). http://www.petedge.com/Guardian-Gear-Bas…

        Best wishes & good luck!

        You're showing THIS dog?!?

      • Hello. here are 3 tips on how to train dogs. I hope it helps.

        1) When giving your dog a command, avoid using a loud voice. Even if your dog is especially independent/unresponsive, your tone of voice when issuing an obedience command such as "sit","down" or ""stay", should be calm and authoritative, rather than harsh or loud. 2 ) Whenever possible, use your dog's name positively, rather than using it in conjunction to reprimands, warnings or punishment. Your dog should trust that when it hears its name or is called to you, good things happen. His name should always be a word he responds to with enthusiasm, never hesitancy or fear.

        3) Avoid giving your dog combined commands which are incompatible. Combined commands such as "sit-down" can confuse your dog. Using this example, say either "sit" or "down". The command "sit-down" simply doesn't exist.

Dog Health Questions: How do I start a career as a dog trainer and where do I begin learning dog training from?

I want to build my career as a dog trainer but i'm totally inexperienced with training dogs. I need a stepping stone but where do I begin? If I don't intend to study abroad, where can I learn dog training in Singapore? Any workshops or courses to recommend? Usually how do beginners get people to trust them to train their dogs? And if I don't want to be a freelance dog trainer, are there any company I can work for? And also, all the above mentioned questions have to be resolved within Singapore. I am a Singaporean and I do not wish to go overseas because I have no money to go abroad. This is my second enquiry on being a dog trainer.
Any wise advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! :)

So You Want a Guard Dog, Eh? (Basic Dog Training)

      • You go to a Dog Trainer School.

"dog trainer schools in Singapore" via Yahoo search.

        http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=dog%20t…

That is how I learned to train dogs. I graduated a Canine Behaviorist, Master Dog trainer specializing in aggression (all aspects), Basic Obedience to Advanced Obedience trainer. It was in the 70's & then it cost $5,000.

You can work with some of the rescues places they always need help. Get experience any where you can. I have mucked out cages, I've walked some of the dogs, I have dipped many in shelters, groomed them, . Go to a dog park & intermix with owners & their dogs.

      • I would recommend going to a local shelter. Many shelters have programs that show volunteers how to train shelter dogs to make them more adoptable. And you can help develop contacts through the person running the program.

      • The "Dog Whisperer" may have a great book on training out there. Also, watch his show for a lot of great tips.

      • Well petsmart has a training program if that helps!

      • First you need to train your own dog(s). Find an obedience school or club and take classes.

      • HEY!!!
        I wanna be one too.

If you are very unexperienced with dogs, you should start by finding a relative or friend who has one you can socialize with and get to know.

Watch a lot of tv shows on dogs (animal planet has good information you can check their website)
Hey look! found something on their website that might help you start!
        http://animal.discovery.com/guides/dogs/…
        Check it out!

I have read about three books so far, and I trained my neighbour's dogs for basics with their help.
Your local library is the best place to start.
Read books about them, and try to go to a friend's house to test out their dog with what you learned (unless the dog is really well trained, which in my case, wasn't).

The book that helped me the most, was called : The Complete Guide to Dog Training by Katharina Schlegl- Kofler

I don't know much about Singapore, since I live in North-America but other answers might help you.

However, for a first step, you should do the above.

Dog Health Questions: Comparison of dog training schools (ABC vs. KPA vs. Ben Kersen vs. Michael Ellis)?

I have been looking into some dog training schools and would appreciate any info experienced dog trainers can provide.

As I see it so far:

      Animal Behaviour College:
      Least expensive
      Good overview of material
Can take grooming & training (more info)
practical part is based on a mentor who may or may not be what you are looking for (this is where I see most complaints)

      Karan Pryor Academy:
      More in depth knowledge
      More expensive
Only 8 days with a trainer?

      Ben Kersen & The Wonderdogs:
      Seems outdated
Have 3 full months of full time hands on
      Need to incur travel costs
      Only accredited training school

      Michael Ellis:
      2 weeks hands on
      travel costs
      appreciate and intensive
      Seems up to date

      Any suggestions? Thoughts?

      Thank you

I want to mention that a lot of trainers are telling me to just get out there but I am having a hard time getting into the industry so want to increase my knowledge and experience by attending a course.

The only one of those schools I would even consider recommending is Mike Ellis'. I haven't seen his school but I have attended his seminars since about '02. He knows dogs. He knows what motivates them. He's the type of person who notices the little things which is what makes him a great trainer. He also trained last year's Mondio Ring 3 champ.

Dog Health Questions: What is the cost of dog training/obedience?

I have 2 German Shepherds. 1 mail 1yr. 1 female 9 months. I want to adopt another male German Shepherd that is 21/2 yrs. What is the average cost of training do you think?

Revealed - Boxer Dog Training Secrets

      Recommended Answer:
Hi there, hope your doing ok!

Here are your options for various kinds of dog training programs:

There are group dog training sessions that usually cost around $40 - $130 and that last four to eight weeks, 1 hour per session.

There are also private dog training sessions, where the trainer himself will visit your house or work place to give your dog a professional training for around two - four weeks. This type costs around $1000 - $2,500 and training session usually last longer compared to group training sessions.

Yes it is quite expensive, but you can rest assured that you will get what you pay for. Most dog trainers focus on different areas of your dog's attitude and obedience and after that training program, you will begin to appreciate the difference it did for your dog and for you. Standard training classes usually focus on addressing your dog's chewing, barking, biting and digging behavior.

Here are a few tricks that are free though

Start Using Sign Language to Communicate with Your Dog

Believe it or not, your dog never did learn to obey your voice commands. Sure, it may have appeared to obey "sit, stay, and come" or whatever else you have taught it but really your dog learned to follow some other signal. Your dog learned that when you move a certain way you want to it do the trick.

If you watch yourself, you will start seeing that maybe you pat your leg when you want it to come or raise your hand when you want it to sit. Do the sign without the words and your dog will still do the trick. In fact, teach tricks without the sign and your dog will learn faster.

      Start Using Body Language

This goes right along with sign language. Many times, people wonder why my dogs don't rush the door when the doorbell rings. It is because I have taught them not to do this. I tell people I can teach their dogs not to rush the door in less than five minutes as well. (No one ever believes me.)

I have a volunteer ring the doorbell. When the dogs rush the door, I get between the dogs and the door and loom over the dogs. The dogs back away. I back the dogs up until the dogs get to a predefined point. Then, I go towards the door. If the dogs start towards the door, I turn and loom towards the dogs again until they back up past the point. It takes a few minutes but they get the point. (Sometimes I add the word "back" if they have been trained, but not always.)

This method takes a few doorbell rings for the dogs to learn that they are not to go past the predefined point. Then, I have the owners try the doorbell challenge. The owners are always shocked at how fast the dogs learn not to rush the door. It only took a little body language to learn.

      Stop Yelling at the Dogs

This is actually a common mistake. The dogs start barking and people start yelling to be quiet. This is really reinforcing the behavior. In essence, you are telling the dogs there is something to bark about and you are joining in by sounding the alarm.

While this may sound odd, this is an effective maneuver. If your dogs are barking at something outside, call them inside. Even if they only stay inside for a few minutes, you interrupted the pattern and stopped the barking. If they are barking inside, send them out. The message sent is barking equals they must leave the activity and quiet means they get to stay. Never pet a barking dog.

      Hope this was helpful

Dog Training Basics - Avoid These Five Common Mistakes

      • Prices vary widely. For good basic obedience, many local shelters offer classes, usually for under $100. If your dogs have any training issues, or you want more intensive training, I would expect to pay in the $150 - 200 range for a 6 - 8 week series. Some places will give a multiple dog discount if you want to bring all the dogs.

German Shepherds are super smart, so obedience class should be great fun!. Just remember training is on-going and lasts a dog's whole life.

      • Hi,
IMHO i don't like training "classes." I admit I'm being bias because i like guard dogs and and reading up on advanced dog training. If your dog is trained by other people other than yourself this can sometimes make the dog think that he can trust anyone. I know this isn't true in all circumstances.

By training you dog yourself you can save money and create a stronger bond with your dog(s). They enjoy spending time with their owners and they enjoy pleasing their owners. so if you do train the dog yourself make sure to let the dog know your impressed and happy when he does something right. they can sense if your happy or not.

Dog Health Questions: Trying to find a book about running a dog training business?

I am looking for the single best book I could get that has the most information about starting and running a dog training business.

Also if you have any websites on the same topic that would be great

Dog Training and the Dog-Human Bond

      Recommended Answer:
These are the 3 best resources that were given to me when I was researching the very same question for my sister.

      1. First off, research the market you are getting into. I know this sounds like a Mr. Obvious type of statement, but there are effective, and not-so-effective ways of doing this type of research. So what would be the most effective and cheapest way to research the dog training world? I'd head on over to Mr. P's dog training pages. Tons and tons of information all geared towards the dog training subject.

      2. Get a mentor or become an apprentice... the best and cheapest way to do this is either contact someone who is actively in the business (make sure they are out of your proposed territory - you will not get any help or advice from someone you may take business away from), or tap into SCORE. Go to their website and type in "dog trainer" as part of your criteria for a business mentor. It's free, and you may fall onto some retired dog trainer who will give you priceless guidance not found in any book.

      3. Look at books recommended by established organizations. There are tons of how-to ebooks being marketed online today - and most of them carry inflated price tags since anywhere from 50-75% of the price goes to the affiliates who are marketing them. Sorry, but this is a truism in most cases.

      Good luck in your search...

Dog Health Questions: How much should I charge for dog-training and sitter?

I'm an experienced dog trainer (I've fully trained my three dogs, as well as several of my friends dogs which included a pitbull, rottweiler, and german sheperd) and needing some extra cash for how everything is so expensive these days, I want to take up a part-time job of dog-training and sitting. How much should I charge? What would you pay for a personal trainer? By the way, I'm 17 1/2.

      Recommended Answer:
For the first few customers, go low (like $10-$15, no more then $20) just so that you can get experienced even more. When you've trained a few customers dogs till they are satisfied, use them are recommendations and go higher. Of course, I wouldn't pay no more then $50 for a person trainer.

      • Just because you have experience, doesnt mean that you can charge people. Different states have different laws and id check into that before charging. You may have to report your earnings and pay taxes. You really should have some sort of professional training and a certificate to show people. Helping your friends is different from helping a stranger. I do overnight house sitting/dog sitting and I charge 25$ a night.
