Dog Health Questions: Training tips for beagle with separation anxiety?

Hey everyone,
I've posted a few questions in regards to my beagles separation anxiety, but I've never really asked about possible training tips for curing him of this problem. I do not have access to dog training services because I live in a pretty remote area and there are no resources within a reasonable driving distance (esp. with gas being around 4.30 a gallon). But he still goes absolutely nuts when he's left alone. I'm back home from school now so he is rarely left at the house alone because there is usually someone here. But the few times he is left alone, he goes crazy. He has a crate that I usually put him in when we are gone, although he's pretty well house broken and doesn't seem to chew on things he knows he's not allowed to. But in any regard, is there anything I can do to help him with his separation anxiety? I'm concerned about his panicing, and I'm also concerned about disturbing others by his loud, baying howls when he's alone. I was considering purchasing a citronalla (or however you spell it) to help with the barking, but it likely would not hlep with his anxiety itself. I'm worried about him, as well as not disturbing others.

Any suggestions would be greatly apprecaited.

Hello, I'll try to give you some tips to help you. I'm sorry if I don't have many ideas.

Before you leave, take your dog on a 45 minute walk, play fetch for about half an hour, go on a jog. Anything that is exercise will work. The goal is to tire your dog out so when you leave your dog will be tired, so he will sleep or relax while you are gone.

Keep your dog busy, KONGS work great. I fill my dog's KONG up with his dry food, apple chunks, diced chicken, or peanut butter. The KONG will keep him busy, so he won't be focusing on you being gone, but trying to get the food.

Leave the T.V, or radio on for noise. It might help him calm down if he hears other people talking. On iTunes I bought some music from The Dog Whisperer Band, and my puppy falls asleep to it.

Try not to make a big deal of leaving. By that I mean don't say, "Aww, I won't be gone too long!" in a baby voice and smother him with kisses. That will make him even more anxious.

• I agree with not making a big deal out of coming and going. You also have to desensitize your dog to your leaving.

Dog Health Questions: In what order should I teach my dog tricks?

Well I have owned dogs my whole life but never bothered to train them more than "sit" at most.
I recently decided to train my Chihuahua and so far he's doing okay. He picked up "sit" right away and after a couple days has learned "lay down".
I know sit is a good basic place to start, and lay down kind of goes hand in hand with it. But where should I go from here? I know I should start with easier tricks and move on to more advanced ones later, but what is considered easy and advanced. If someone who is experienced with dog training can answer I would appreciate it.
Also are Chihuahuas easy to train? I know they are not the smartest but how do you think he will do. Thanks guys.

In my classes the first thing I make sure all the dogs know and understand is "come". without a good "come" all other training is worthless. From there we go to "sit", "stay" (a very useful command for prevent jumping on people and running out of the door), "watch me" (for leash work to prevent pulling), and finally a "down" (which is usually the hardest to train because most dogs do not like this position and it is usually accompanied by a "stay" command). I also insist upon dogs learning "wait" vs "stay". Wait means stay until I tell you to do something else, and Stay means stay there until I get back. Dogs quickly learn the difference.
I have my students use treats (the smaller the better) in order to reinforce the commands, and I do not allow prong or e-collars under any situation. For leash work we use "let's go" instead of "heel" because the "heel" command means the dog has to be in a specific position and is only used for competition training, so "let's go" means walk with me and don't pull.
After the dogs learn these commands, we have a tricks class, and owners come to class with something they specifically want to teach their dog, either a "bow", "fetch", "roll over", "high five", "find it"(on of the more fun games to play), and anything else they desire.

Dog Health Questions: Does my dog just need to be trained?

I rescued a two year dachshuad from the pound a week ago. For the first five days he didn't pee in the house. Now in the past 24 hours he has peed in the house three times. It seems like he pees when I acknowledge him. He will be hanging out with my girlfriend and I come home and it seems he gets excited and pees. It seem like he knows he is doing something wrong when he does it because he runs to his crate right after and won't come out. Again he didn't do this the first 6 days we had him. When you first come home don't look at him or say anything, just take him outside. You just rescued him so who knows why but he has no control its a submissive pee. But handled gently he should stop. • Well, I dog-sit for a lot of my neighbors, but out of all the dogs I've ever watched, I have to say that the best behaved ones that I've met are my neighbor Gene's. You can certainly train your new dog no matter what the age it is when you get it.
I was chatting to the best dog trainer in Australia a couple of months ago- and he actually has a Rottweiler- he got this Rottie when it was 20 months old, and says in all his experience of training dogs it is the best dog he has ever had in his life- which is saying something seeing as he has 40+ years of training dogs all over the world in tracking, field trialling, protection, drug detection and obedience.

The only thing that will really impact on your training is how well the dog was socialised as a puppy- as a well socialised pup will have the best start in life and will be much more successful in virtually every aspect of its life.
Its not to say that a dog that was not correctly socialised is not trainable and wont be a fantastic companion, though!

I definately recommend Obedience for every dog, but particularly Rottweilers because they are large, powerful, and very intelligent. These dogs excel in Obedience and protection work.
They are also prone to human and dog aggression, which should be avoided, and Obedience training can definately help out with this as well.

Dog Training Tips For Hard-To-Train Dogs

• I wouldn't be concerned at all. 6 months old is still very young, and he still has plenty of time to be trained. The only thing that I'd be a tiny bit worried about is socialization. If she hasn't started socializing him yet, then you'll have to work a bit harder with that. But, that shouldn't be a problem.
  
  Train it as you would any other dog. It's a good idea to start training puppies at a young age so that they get accustomed to that and are happy with it. But, it's not going to really effect his train ability. In fact, 6 months is one of my favorite times for training because they are so intent on pleasing you and playing. Which are both wonderful things to bring into each training lesson.
  
  Just remember to get him well socialized, and I don't think you should have any problem at all.

You see, my first dog was killed a while back, he chose the wrong time to run into the road, and I had to watch it all go down. I just need some good tips to train my new pup. She doesn't go to the road yet, but I want to stop it before it starts.

Train your dog/puppy on a leash. never let the dog off the leash until he/she is older and has gone to obedience school or you have trained it to stay in the yard. Or you could invest in an invisible fence but it may be expensive. I never take my dogs off a leash except when they are inside a fenced in dog park where leashes are not allowed.

• With your fears, which your new puppy will feel, you should always have her on a leash. Even service dogs are walked on a leash when not serving.

It's also a good idea to add a physical command, as dogs watch us more than they listen to us. I like to point, at a 90 degree angle to the rest of my body, and then bring my arm back to my side. Use her name when asking her to come as it will help her lean her name using the command, and/or vice versa. If you ever get frustrated, take a break as frustration will do more harm than good. Remember always to praise her when she does come, even if she doesn't come right away, and if you honestly think your dog won't come for some reason (if they are chasing an animal or something) don't call her as it could reverse the training.
  As for the road, (i am terribly sorry for your loss) I would always walk her on a leash. Even if you trust her not to go by the road, I would never trust the drivers not to hit her (maybe she chases something). Victoria Stilwell is a wonderful source! She does positive reinforcement, that is always your best option.

About a half hour after your dog eats a meal or drinks a lot of water, take her outside on a leash and wait for her to go to the bathroom. Once she does, give her a treat! Pet her, get excited, make her excited, and let her know that what she did was GREAT! This is time consuming, but it is the quickest method.

  Be very proactive you need to get her to associate doing he business with being outside. Get them in the habit of going out about 20 minutes after she eats.
  
  All dogs are trainable, unfortunately us humans are the ones that are not constant about the housebreaking. Plenty of praise when she succeeds.


• Dogs always take the path of least resistance. Their reward for pooping or peeing is: "Hey I don't have to go now - I feel great!" Inside or outside it's the same reward! You have to make your dog see that it is better for her to go outside than inside. Go out with her everytime - if she goes outside she gets 3 little treats and praise! Make a big impression on her! If she goes inside...she gets nothing. Don't scold or she will become a sneaky pee-er!
  Once she "gets it" that outside means 3 treats and inside means "0" - she'll live to go outside! Get really good stinky treats and be consistent. Also, if you haven't already, get her fixed and that will get rid of some confusing hormones. After she's trained every once in a while give her a treat when she goes outside to re-enforce the bevavior. She'll continue to "play the lottery" in hope of that big treat pay-off!

• you might have to make a game out of it.. I had to do this with a JRT.. he was impossible. he would sneak downstairs and poop in the basement. One day I caught him in the act. I shoved the TU RD into his mouth and helot closed has I carried him outside... I tossed him out in the grass where he accidently swallowed it..................... he has never pooped in the house again ... its been three years..lol


• When you tell her sit, do it in a firm (not high pitched and friendly) voice and she may need help remembering what you are saying. If you lightly push on her hind quarters and tell her sit, she may get the hint. Lots of praise and reward is needed when she does it. Sometimes with my husky, I have to tap on her head to get her attention to me before she will listen! Also, try putting her on a lead so you can use a firm but small tug to help get her attention. Also, if have a small length of chain, drop it at her feet (dogs hate things at their feet) but DON'T hit her with it. She will associate the noise of the chain, something coming at her feet and her inaction and after a short time, you will only need to rattle the chain to get her attention.
  
  As she gets used to the commands, it will be easier and less of a task to get her to sit, but right now, she is testing your authority.


• Pick an area in the yard for your dog to use.
  Take your dog to the same place every time. It will smell it's own scent this way.
  3. Be patient. If your dog is interested in just laying down in the yard, it may not be the best time to take him out.
  4. Give praise when they do their 'business' so they will know that it is a good thing.
  5. a method to try is come up with an uncommon word that is NOT used in conversation to say repeatedly outside, which will be the commmand for going to the bathroom. Once your dog becomes accustomed to it, you will have to say it less and less each time, to where you say it once and it is done. 6. Remember to have fun with your dog!!!!!
  
  Remove all of the odors of the dog's accidents in the house. This can be done many ways--several products on the market work well.
  Get a leash, and put it by the door the dog will go out of to go potty.
  Remember if he went potty in the house it is because he either doesn't know not to or because you didn't take him out often enough.
  
  Tips
  Learn what your dog does before he goes potty, i.e. does he sniff at the walls, whine at the door, or just get antsy and start wandering around? Knowing these cues will help you take him out when he needs to go.
  Feed your dog at specific times (and pay attention to when he drinks water) and expect it out the other end at specific times - dogs and intestinal tracts have routines.
  Neutered males are far less likely to mark their territory in your house by urinating on things. It might help to have your dog altered.
  Remember, accidents will happen.
  
  Warnings
  If your dog suddenly has accidents in the house it could be health related - seek a veterinarian.
  If your dog seems to be needing to - or going potty often, this could be health related and it is wise to consult your Vet.


• Maybe she has a weak bladder or a urinary tract infection. Both of those would cause her to have accidents. Other medical conditions can, too. Try taking her to the vet and ask if there's anything wrong with her.
  
  I'm sure you've done this, but make sure to crate train her. Crate her in a smallish crate, when you're away or asleep. When she's out, watch her like a hawk. As soon as you take her out of the crate, take her outside. Reward her for peeing and pooping outside. You could also take her to the pad, but that sends the message "it's ok to pee in the house", so I don't favor that method. It might take awhile, especially if you've punished her for accidents. She might be too afraid to pee in front of you because she thinks she'll get punished. You have to change her association.
  
  If she still potties in the crate, even though it's small enough, I'd bet she's not able to hold it. This is a medical issue. Dogs do not like to lay in their own filth. They will hold it as long as they can, which is why crate training works.
  
  When she's out of the crate, take her outside often. Give her lots of opportunities to be a "good dog". Always bring treats on the walks. At first, you'll be exhausted by how much you have to take her out, just waiting for her to pee. But in the end, it's worth it. Good luck!


• I assume that you mean house training. But if you want to do other training, also, then get some books and tapes by Ian Dunbar from the library or from Amazon. All of his books are good, so choose the ones that you like.
  
  House Training:
  Don't use ammonia to clean up any messes, because it smells like urine to the dog. Use vinegar or the special pet stain cleaners, instead.
  
  1. Watch her very carefully when you are home and take her outside after she drinks, eats, or sniffs around. Keep her outside for 5 minutes, then come back in.... but keep careful watch. Always take her to the exact same spot outside for her toilet, and clean up solid waste every few days.
  
  2. When you can't watch her, put her in a crate. You want to try to let her out about every four hours, but she is old enough that she can handle 8 hours, if you are diligent in walking her before and after meals, and before and after leaving for work/school.
  
  3. If you don't use a crate, then confine her in a room, like the bathroom or kitchen that you can cover with newspaper.
  
  4. Put food, water, toys, and bedding in one corner. When you come back after a few hours, take her outside for a walk. Then clean up soiled newspaper, clean the floor underneath with vinegar, and save a small piece for the smell. Place some clean newspaper in another corner of the room, away from her food, and place the smelly piece of newspaper in the corner. Keep newspaper on the rest of the floor.
  
  5. The next day she should have tried to go to the bathroom close to the smelly corner. Repeat the process from above, clean the floor, use new paper, place a new smelly piece of paper in the corner opposite her food.
  
  You are trying to teach her where her toilet is by placing a large blinking sign that says bathroom. Since your dog can't read, you are using a small piece of paper for the same purpose. Your dog has a good sense of smell, so the smelly paper doesn't have to be very large or disgusting. Just a few inches.
  
  6. Keep doing this for a few days, until your dog goes to the bathroom consistently in the same 5' x 5' area. If you are patient and loving, then she may learn to go in an area less than 2' x 2' in less than 4 days, but don't push it.
  
  7. If things are on track after 5 or 6 days, then remove all of the paper, except a 5' x 5' area in the corner, with a small smelly piece of paper.
  
  8. Advanced: If she is a small dog, then you might slowly reduce the area to about 1' x 1', then you can train her to use a kitty litter box inside... but that may be pushing things.
  
  9. When she is consistent, then remove all the paper, and move the smelly piece of paper to the outside to show her where her bathroom is. She may have a few accidents, so try to understand what happened and why she had the accident.
  But this method should work for most puppies and dogs.
  
  10. Things to remember:
  A. You can remove the paper when you are home and watching her. You only need the paper during the training period of about two weeks, and only when no one is home to watch her, while she is confined in the kitchen/bathroom.
  B. Always clean up the floor under any mess or mistake with lots of vinegar to remove the smell.
  C. Remember that the smell to a dog is like a large, red, blinking sign to people.
  D. Always get rid of soiled newspaper, except for a tiny piece with smell. Replace the soiled newspaper with clean newspaper for the first few days.
  
  Also, walk her, pet her, and talk to her softly... so that she will learn that she has a loving home.

• If professional trainers can't help you with housetraining.. I would maybe question how professional they really are.. . Have you had her to the vet to rule out health issues??

kay heres the deal i have had this dog for about 8 mouths now and she is not trained..... reason being i am a lazy dic .... anyway my mom and bro r sick of the dog pee and pooping everywhere, and said if i dont get her trained by september she is gone. Now I am welling to do anything to get my dog trained

• First of all, congrats! You'll enjoy them!
  My first suggestion would be not to go for a book but for real, live dog training with a professional trainer. Most Humane Societies have obedience classes. So do PetsMarts, PetCo, PetLand etc. Veterinarians are now starting to offer classes as well. I would also suggest that you contact some folks who have the same breed as your pups ... even if they are mixed breed, maybe there is a dominant breed? They can give you all kinds of insights about the breed and its character traits, needs, training quirks etc. You may also get some good literature from your obedience classes! Beware, though, some folks can be a bit extremist in their beliefs about their breed! Let common sense rule!
  Clicker Training is a very interesting method of training as well and some people have had great success! Pet stores usually carry clickers, books and DVDs.
  Of course, there is always Cesar Milan, the Dog Whisperer as well!

I have a couple dog training questions.
We just adopted our dog. She is six months old.
And we are working on obedience training.
We are following all the tips we can from the many websites I've read.

1. Our dog listens really well when we use hand signals. How do we get her to listen to just the words? Or will that just come?
2. Is there a method to get her to listen when distracted?

1. If she listens with hand signals, then begin to use the words along with the hand signals. After some consistent repetition, she should be able to associate the words with the hand signals.
2. The only way to get her to listen when distracted is to practice in progressively more distracting situations. If you only practice at home when things are perfect, she'll only listen when things are perfect. Practice introducing distractions into your training routine. Get a friend to help.

Dog Training Hand Signal - Train Your Dog To Sit With Only Showing Your Hand

• Websites and internet advise will not teach you to properly train the dog. Dog's primary 'language' is body so she will 'listen' to your body regardless of what you say. If you want to add verbal cues, fine - it is like training anything else - it simply takes consistency and redundancy and reward for obeying. The only way she will generalize any training and obey you (not just listen to you) when there are distractions around and in any and all environments, is to train her consistently to obey you in numerous distracting situations. The 'method' is to locate a good motivational obedience class/ instructor and learn how to properly interact with and train your dog. Good luck and congratulations.


• Use hand signals with words and she will learn what words correlate with what signals eventually you'll be able to use one or the other with the same results...as long as you reward the same for both.
  
  A good training collar can help to "snap dogs back to reality" when confronted with distractions....also, teaching the "leave it" and "watch me" commands and rewarding profusely for a good watch with distractions is very helpful. When a dog is distracted and not doing what you want them to do, one of the best things you can do is give her a command letting her know what you DO want her to do. It is very hard for a dog who really wants to focus on something else if you only use a simple "leave it" command.....however, if you tell them to "leave it" and then "watch me", or sit, heel, down, whatever....they can refocus their energy on what you told them to do. Initially they will not want to refocus on you, but if you give some well timed corrections and rewards, you can win the battle.
  
  I used an e-collar for recalls with my dog because he was a really bad runner when I got him. Now, I can call him off the chase of a rabbit with my voice. He knows there is a correction waiting for him if he doesn't do as he's told, and LOTS of praise if he does.


• When you give her the hand signal also say the voice command. She will catch on with practice. There is a method you can use to get her to listen when distracted. Make a sharp noice like, "AHH" and walk away from the distracting situation. She will soon ignore the distractions. Also you can use the "watch me" command. I dont want to type it all out so I will find a youtube video on it. = )

  Also, you should try clicker training~ but the command does not have to be done using a clicker. Just say, "good" and give her a treat.


• You can do the words and hand signals at the same time, until she gets used to what hand signals mean what words, eventually you can cut the signals out if you like.

• For example if you are teaching her sit command, say "Sit" once and get a little treat (i.e smacko piece, cat biccie, cheese, ham ect.) then put the treat up to her nose and get higher and higher behind her with heer nose following it then when she sits reward and say yes.
  
  Some dogs wont work 4 treats, try a squeaky toy, that will also keep her attention,

You should read Temple Grandin's book "Animals Make Us Human" especially the first chapter and the chapter on dogs. Her information is backed by by research. In case you don't know of her, she is a PhD Animal Behaviorist at Colorado State University and has autism both of which give her a unique voice in the world of animal behavior. She has information about the newer finding about natural wolf behavior, that they don't live in packs but in families. She also writes about the differences when you have more than about three unrelated dogs living together when is when they begin to form packs and not family groups. She explains why the concept of being a parent to your dog is usually more appropriate than the concept of being the alpha or pack leader.

There is also some current research that refutes the dominance methods of dog training. Another author to look up is Suzanne Clothier.

From the limited reading I've done, I think there are some dogs and breeds that this could work for but I also think that most people won't have what it takes and wind up with really confused dogs.
