Dog Health Questions: Can a dog have honey nut cheerios as a treat?

Hey just got my puppy he is tiny the only treat his size is a honey nut cheerio and is it ok if I feed them to him only as a treat for dog training? it's not going to be his diet just a treat

Dog Training Advice - Tips That You Can Use

I'd start by saying at this age try to restrict yourself to toilet training, and staying off furniture if you don't want him adopting the couch or bed. The kind of training that warrent food rewards is months away.
I don't think it's a good idea to give him cherrios at all, you don't know if theres additives that may trouble him and too much sugar is never a good idea. Petting and praise is treat enough at this point.

Dog Training Methods Uncovered

  • As a general rule, don't feed your dog processed human food - especially not with sugar on it. It's really easy (and way cheaper than buying) to make your own dog treats. I do and my dog LOVES them!

There are loads of recipes here: http://www.bullwrinkle.com/Assets/Recipe… . Make sure any recipes you use have natural ingredients, no processed sugar, and minimal natural sugars (your dog does not brush it's teeth the way we do, so make sure you your pup isn't in for a life of tooth decay) I make the liver brownies - they go a long way and freeze well for storage.

Also, bear in mind that all food put into your dogs mouth is part of its diet - even if it is a treat in small amounts. You can break treats up into tiny pieces to make them go further. You'll probably find that you end up giving quite a few treats during training sessions, so make sure you reduce the daily meals to allow for the treats you give.

Incidentally, if you really cannot be bothered to make your own treats (and lets face it - lots of people do not hav the time or inclination), most treats can simply be cut down to a size suitable for your pup. A cheerio isn't much smaller in comparison to some of the treats I have seen anyway.

My dog LOVES peanut butter - this might also be an option for you as a small treat - just make sure you get low sugar and salt - I use an organic brand.

  • No, it's bad for his health, it will make him fat (dogs get fat real fast) and he will have a heart attack soon. If you gave one already you are to late and you can start digging a hole in you backyard.

  • There is nothing wrong with Honey Nut Cherrios. They make a good treat it isn't likely to make them fat fast. Animal crackers work good too. His dog food could make him fat, you just have to have balance.

  • Yes, it's O.K. for dog training. But, just a few. After training, stop the Cheerios, as he will get fat.

  • moderation is the key. A couple of them wont hurt him but just like humans, a lot of them will make him fat and unhealthy.

  • Best training are simple dog biscuits, smaller of course for your puppy.
