Dog Health Questions: This dog is forgetting everything everything she learned!?

My dog learned how to sit but after i taught her down, she forgot sit!
And now the dog training is too expensive. around 120 dollars.
how do i teach my dog more tricks without making her forget the other tricks?

Dog Training Books - Why You Need One to Obedience Train Your Dog Correctly

Recommended Answer:
Every time you go to train her, do a run-through of what you've already learned.

For example, I have taught my Sheltie (9 y/o): sit, stay, come, speak, up, down.
I want to (and am teaching) the "lie" command. Before we begin, we run thorugh all the tricks/commands I have previously taught him, do some work, and finish up with the old stuff. And, of course, there is a lot of praise involved. You have to make it fun.

No-No Dog Training Techniques

  • try persuading her to do things with treats but no trans fat ones =)

  • use treats and positive reinforcements

  • while teaching her new tricks reinforce the old ones. Don't just do the new trick all the time.

  • Patience. Sometimes it takes dogs a little bit to grasp what they're learning. Consistency is the biggest factor. You have to be consistent and repetitive. If you want to introduce new tricks with old ones, keep doing the old ones all the while training for new tricks. Use small treats if you think they may help. Usually praise goes a long way, but sometimes an extra little tasty treat is just what the dog needs to remember that trick!

  • use treats and lots of praise. if you do a command at least 3 times a day, throughout the day, your dog wont forget. practice helps and so do rewards.

  • How old is this dog?
Do you practice every exercise or "trick" several times each day?
Has the dog known how to do this for at least 2 or 3 months?
$120 for training is cheap compared to the damage an untrained dog can do. It's part of the expense of having a dog.
If you need a less expensive course, try your local dog club. They have only volunteer trainers, so usually they have less experience than professionals, but not always. Many are good.

  • You don't have to go to class. If you remember the obedience class and the commands, you can do this at home. We practice periodically so we don't forget.

  • i think you should spend more time and repetition on the first trick, get the behaviour ie. 'sit' so he will respond anywhere and under different circumstances to the command. 'then' you can move on to the next trick you want to teach ie. the 'down' (but still keep doing the first behaviour also)

  • Link the tricks together. Have her sit, then lay, then give the treat. When she gets the hang of that add stay. If you link them together she won't forget them.

  • Let me sum this up in about 2 sentences. Dog training regardless of the level requires 3 things. Patience persistence and perseverance. Keep training fun keep training constantly and be willing to change things up to keep them fun. Build on old tricks by using the older ones as building blocks.
