Dog Health Questions: Hunting with an undocked dog?

I own a Springer from working stock and recently, I've been doing basic gun dog training with her, she's picking it up quickly and doing really well.
I've just returned from training classes. The classes are for obedience and agility but one of the trainers has fully trained gun dogs that he competes, trains, works and demonstrates with, so he takes me aside to do gun dog work while the other dogs do the agility. Today I was asking about competing in field trials with her if she completes all her training and he said the only problem would be her tail, so now I'm looking more towards the YKC junior handler field trials because of her tail.
My question is, does anyone have any experience working an undocked dog?

Abused Dog Training - How to Train an Abused Dog

Recommended Answer:
Tail docking is the owner's personal decision. Tail docking has no proven uses with hunting. Really, I think a dog with an undocked tail would be easier to find in taller grass.

It's best to do that when the dog is young, a lot younger than 15 months old.
If I would do anything to my dogs, I'd remove the dew-claws.With a dog who's tail isn't docked, you'll just have to brush the tail.. which the dog should be brushed after a day out in the field to remove any burrs or anything from the coat.

Choosing Basics Dog Training Methods

  • Dock or undock who cares. I hate docked tails...they look weird and unnatural and tails are there for a reason. Don't dock her.

  • Well, i have a springer too. She was undocked to. until a realized it would be better to dock her. Docking was the best choice i ever made. Usually my springer would come home and i would have to clean her tail off and it was soooo annoying. You can hunt with a undocked dog its just difficult. So my suggestion is to dock her!

  • Hunter Ethics..

  • I hate docking, just do what you always do with a hunting dog, take it hunting.

  • It has nothing to do with anything. In some countries tail docking is illegal. A field bred English springer spaniel in the US would generally have a very lightly docked tail anyway. The AKC standard is what the show bred dogs have. Ignore the whole docking thing.

Check out: http://www.spanielsinthefield.com/ You should be able to locate a local/nearby field trial club.

Dog Health Questions: Dog training?

i have taught my dog how to sit, laydown, rollover, and to give a paw. now going to try to teach her to speak, any suggestions?

Time To Find Out More About Appropriate And Efficient Dog Training

  • Rent the Cesar Milan (The Dog Whisperer) DVDs or Videos you will learn a lot!!! And you will laugh too! I'm glad you like your dog!

  • Come and stay.. Drop it. Bring..

  • I taught my dog to "speak" on command. When he barked, I said "yes, speak" and gave him a treat. Then tell your dog to "speak" again. It may take him a minute or two, but as soon as he barks again, say "yes, speak" and give him a treat again. Do that over and over until he gets it and pretty soon he'll be "speaking" on command. Good luck and have fun!

Dog Health Questions: This dog is forgetting everything everything she learned!?

My dog learned how to sit but after i taught her down, she forgot sit!
And now the dog training is too expensive. around 120 dollars.
how do i teach my dog more tricks without making her forget the other tricks?

Dog Training Books - Why You Need One to Obedience Train Your Dog Correctly

Recommended Answer:
Every time you go to train her, do a run-through of what you've already learned.

For example, I have taught my Sheltie (9 y/o): sit, stay, come, speak, up, down.
I want to (and am teaching) the "lie" command. Before we begin, we run thorugh all the tricks/commands I have previously taught him, do some work, and finish up with the old stuff. And, of course, there is a lot of praise involved. You have to make it fun.

No-No Dog Training Techniques

  • try persuading her to do things with treats but no trans fat ones =)

  • use treats and positive reinforcements

  • while teaching her new tricks reinforce the old ones. Don't just do the new trick all the time.

  • Patience. Sometimes it takes dogs a little bit to grasp what they're learning. Consistency is the biggest factor. You have to be consistent and repetitive. If you want to introduce new tricks with old ones, keep doing the old ones all the while training for new tricks. Use small treats if you think they may help. Usually praise goes a long way, but sometimes an extra little tasty treat is just what the dog needs to remember that trick!

  • use treats and lots of praise. if you do a command at least 3 times a day, throughout the day, your dog wont forget. practice helps and so do rewards.

  • How old is this dog?
Do you practice every exercise or "trick" several times each day?
Has the dog known how to do this for at least 2 or 3 months?
$120 for training is cheap compared to the damage an untrained dog can do. It's part of the expense of having a dog.
If you need a less expensive course, try your local dog club. They have only volunteer trainers, so usually they have less experience than professionals, but not always. Many are good.

  • You don't have to go to class. If you remember the obedience class and the commands, you can do this at home. We practice periodically so we don't forget.

  • i think you should spend more time and repetition on the first trick, get the behaviour ie. 'sit' so he will respond anywhere and under different circumstances to the command. 'then' you can move on to the next trick you want to teach ie. the 'down' (but still keep doing the first behaviour also)

  • Link the tricks together. Have her sit, then lay, then give the treat. When she gets the hang of that add stay. If you link them together she won't forget them.

  • Let me sum this up in about 2 sentences. Dog training regardless of the level requires 3 things. Patience persistence and perseverance. Keep training fun keep training constantly and be willing to change things up to keep them fun. Build on old tricks by using the older ones as building blocks.

Dog Health Questions: How to build a pigeon hutch?

I want to build a bird hutch for keeping pigeons for dog training. Can anyone refer me to a site with some free plans, or explain the best way to build a hutch (as in expensive and easy as possible)? I want to build something small, as i will not be housing more than 6-12 birds at a time.

Proven Dog Training Methods

Recommended Answer:
Step 1Build holding pens that are 2 feet high and 3 square feet. Each of these pens will hold 15 birds comfortably. If you have more birds, build another pen and stack it on the first one. These pens can be situated on legs at any height.

Step 2Make the floor of your pens out of 1/2 foot of plastic wire mesh. The sides of the cage should be made from 2 by 4 wire fencing.

Step 3Add perch boxes 2 rows high. Also nail 2 by 4's end to end in the shape of an "I" to the floor. This gives the pigeons a place to perch and sleep at night.

Step 4Place a piece of cardboard and a plastic slip sheet in between the stacked pens. This will allow you to clean the area without hassle. Once a month, simply pull the slip sheet out and dump it into an empty feed back. Wash it or scrape gently and your cleaning is done.

Step 5Use a pressure washer to clean the cages. Make sure the pigeons have been moved to another cage while you wash them. You could severely injure your birds if you do not remove them from the cages prior to washing.

Step 6Consider the great features of your pen. By housing them in this manner, they are always outside. This is perfect for their health because they get constant sunlight and fresh air. This set-up also allows for easy bathing of the birds. Once a week, you can simply spray the birds down with the water hose and cleaning is complete.

Dog Health Questions: A question for dog owners on training their pets........?

I was at the dog park today and someones poodle puppy (6-9 months old) jumped on me. It is a super sweet dog, very, very, nice. The second time it tried, I lifted my knee and, of course, the dog landed on it. It stopped. A couple of people got really upset with me, and accused me of kicking it. They even lied and said they SAW me kick it. This was an absolute LIE!
Here is the deal......if you don't train your dog, I WILL. I will not be the recipient of smeared dog park mud (i.e. feces, urine, and dirt). If your dog jumps on people, that makes YOU the rude person, NOT ME! People often ask me why my dog is so well behaved (and clearly NOT abused). Maybe it's because I trained him. My dog has been attacked many times before. When this happens, I attack the attacker, no ifs ands or buts!
Either you be alpha with your dog, or I WILL. Pepper spray will knock the living crap out of a dog. I am tired of paying vet bills!
Is your dog trained, or are you just another jerk?

How to Use Dog Training Books to Reinforce You Dog's Good Behavior

    Recommended Answer:
That is exactly how I teach my dogs about jumping, if they jump they will hit my knee. Some people think that jumping or other bad behaviors is cute and that everyone else feels that way. I had the same experience when training my pup on a leash. When they pull you snap the leash so it makes that "snap" nose right behind their ears, it startles the dog and thus will cease pulling or whatnot. the leash DOES NOT ever even touch the dog but I got a couple of people rushing over to me and accusing me of beating my dog with a leash. The way I see it, a well trained dog is a happy dog

Major Breakthrough in Dog Training Revealed

    • I don't know about where you live but where I live you must keep your dogs on a leash if they are out of you house. they are to be restrained at all times. my dogs are trained

    • I understand your anger I believe that it is the pet owners responsibility to train his/her pet, but I don`t understand your response to it. You talk about pepper spraying a dog?
You as a person can not control other peoples pets. By going to the dog park (Which is open to the public) you know that there will be dogs there that don`t have the training that you desire. If you have a problem with this then don`t go to the dog park any more. There are many other ways for you to exercise your dog.

    • I agree with you completely, some people just think they know it all, my dog, a amstaff/pit-bull was attacked five times, twice by a neighbors German Shephered whom was inproperly supervised, this dog was once off a leash sitting in their front yard, and came wailing towards my dog, I grabbed that dog by it's collar and let my dog run for it, cause she clearly was not defending herself at all, instead she wanted to run away to safety. The second time, that dog was in the owners car, and jumped out of the window, viciously barking and again, attacked my dog, I did the same thing as I did before. The third time, it was a cat, I don't know if there was a litter around that she was protecting but she came at my dog with a vengeance, and again, my dog ran, that was acually the funniest site I ever did see.
Fourth time I rescued a neutered male dog, and he attacked my dog in the backseat of our truck, I called up the girl whom adopted him out to me and gave him back.
The fifth time, I was at the dog park with my dog, and my dog was playing with all these other dogs, and then she found a ball that was two feet away from a border collie, that dog came after her so fast, that she didn't know what to do. The owner simply said "OH, he gets that way with his stuff..." the ball wasn't even the dogs ball, but the dog parks.

People really don't know how to handle their animals and it's a shame that you were wrongly accused of doing the right thing.

    • When I was in training I was told the dog park is where you take your dog to show him how not to act.

Animal control told me to becareful of pepperspray depending on which way the wind is blowing you can get yourdog or yourself.

    • somewhat trained...he is a lil hardhead...but i am the alpha..if i raise my voice he stops what he is doing to wait for the next command..but he is soooo loving its hard for him not to jump up on people a bit, and he is very small so its not a big deal...if he was like a big ol dog I would be a little more wary of him jumping up on people, if i see someone does not want to love on my dog i just make sure we ignore him. if i thought someone kicked my dog or did something that made my dog get hurt I would break that persons neck. sometimes that is what happens when you try to "train" someones dog.

    • the biggest problem I have had at dog parks is aggressive dogs, my dog cares about absolutely nothing if I have his Frisbee, he is so focused on it that other dogs pick up on his intensity and pack up around him to chase him when I throw it, he can have 10 dogs bouncing around him and he never takes his focus off the Frisbee, but there seems to be some dogs that see his intense focus as a challenge and I have had to swat aggressive dogs with his soft, dog safe Frisbee as they lunge growling at him, not to hurt them but to break their charge, only to have some dipshit accuse me of beating his dog, I am apparently the only dog owner who knows how to read a dogs body language well enough to know there is about to be a fight, I don't believe in "dogs must always be on a leash", my dog has been through very high level obedience training, he is trained well enough to be called and turn his back on a potential fight or a running deer, dogs need to get out and run, but you as an owner need to know your dog and be there when and if he/she should cause a problem, I should never have to grab your 100lb golden off my dog and huck it 20 feet into an irrigation ditch........but I will if you aren't there with me to help break up a fight, and I don't wanna hear any crap about how I do it.

Dog Health Questions: Dog training help??? Two dogs i need help with.?

Ok. i have two dogs that i need a little help training. One is my deaf pitbull... i cant tell her no or yell at her becuase she cant hear... We're trying with treats and hand signals but she sometimes cant or wont corporate.. Any ideas on how to get her attention. Oh BTW shes deaf because the people who had her before as a puppie left her out side and she got two really severe ear infections. She can hear a dog whistle but nothing else.
My other dog is a 6 month old male. Hes doing really well only he has a problem with picking on other dogs. He is a chiweenie. He likes to play but sometimes he takes it to far. whats the best way to nip this in the bud. oh and im going to get him fixed... would that help calm him down or is that just a myth?

    Dog Training Part I

    Recommended Answer:
If your female can hear a whistle, then use that in your training. There are training methods for hearing impaired dogs, you just have to find a trainer that is comfortable with that type of thing. I think a professional would be best to help with this, along with you and your dog, in person. Too hard to help online.

As for your other dog, neutering will help, but not as an instant calming agent. It will reduce hormones that might cause a problem in the future. But at 6 months old they are just starting. More likely, he is just a bossy little dog. Get him into a basic obedience class, and that will probably be enough.

    Good luck.

    At-Home Dog Training Tips

    • Try to help her with the signals like sit put your hand up then down once if she won't do it try putting her butt down where it is on the floor. Next to teach her shake make her sit and shake her hand make sure to give her a treat.

    • Obedience training is the foundation for establishing a better relationship between you and your dog. Obedience training helps establish the owner in the role of "pack leader". Obedience will lay down clear behavior guidelines that your dog can follow. A well-behaved, obedient dog is more than just a pet of pride. The difference lies largely in the training, and good training can save a dog's life.

Dog Health Questions: What is your opinion on NILIF method of dog training?

*Nothing in Life is Free (too long for question title)

The Significance of Dog Training Videos

    Recommended Answer:
It is great for pushy dogs who need to learn that you are the boss. For a dog that is afraid of people or has no self-confidence, a gentler, more reassuring training method is needed.

How Dog Training Can Help You Find the Perfect Family Dog

    • First off, NILIF is NOT a dog training method. Just because you use NILIF in your home does not mean you don't train your dog as well.

NILIF is simply a way to live life with a strong personality breed, to teach the dog who is in control and eliminate all the conflict that can happen. It is a set of rules to help you stay in charge of your pack.

@ Keria- there is nothing in the NILIF theory that says you feed your dog after you eat. That is a Cesar Millan garbage dominance idea. You can feed your dog whenever you want, as long as the dog gives you a sit and doesn't start until you give a release command. It isn't working because you don't understand it.

      http://k9deb.com/nilif.htm

    • It, or a modified version of it, works well for some dogs, but there is no one size fits all dog training method. I use what works for that particular dog, but NILIF is in my "tool box".

Since most of the dogs I train are not mine, NILIF also has to be something the owner will do and it will not work for people who spoiled, made excuses for etc. their dogs into a behavior problem. It will work for dedicated owners who will do what you tell them because they really want to fix the dog.

It has worked very well for some really awful foster dogs that I have had. They send me all the psycho ones LOL

    • It's a great idea as long as it's done with love and benevolence. You don't have to be mean or scary to make it happen.
A good book on this is How to be the Leader of the Pack and Have Your Dog Love You For It. By Patricia McConnell

      SAPAWS
San Antonio Express News City Brights

Positive reinforcement works. Those who say it doesn't, probably aren't executing it correctly
      TV is for entertainment

    • Iffy about it.

I tried some of the basic tips it gives on my dog to see if it would dent her bad behavior. (I still do it everyday without fail)

I feed the dog after I eat, don't give her affection when she asks for it, don't give her treats/attention unless she does something to earn it, etc.

No change in her behavior what-so-ever.

      I don't think it works.

    • For a dog with any type of issue I am 100% for it. The average dog not so much.

Dog Health Questions: Anyone used Bark Busters??? In Home Dog Training.?

I think I might go with them over "Dog Training In Your Home". I'm not one hundred percent sure yet, so I wanted to see if others have used them? They have a lifetime guarantee, and wherever we move we can continue to use them at a flat rate of $495... they do lifelong training no matter when and what problems arise even after my dog is "trained".

Search And Rescue Dog Training Advice

    Recommended Answer:
There are no true 'certifications' for dog training...anyone can call themselves a dog trainer. I've used APDT 'certified' trainers who were absolute crap...most people who call themselves dog trainers have 0 training - they work based on their own inflated ego and 'experience'.
Bark Busters trainers are some of the best in the world...yes, they are franchised but they go through very extensive training...and if you want results, they are the best. Just check out the THOUSANDS of customer testimonials on their web site www.barkbusters.com
Plus, if Joe dog trainer decides to close up shop one day, you're screwed. Bark Busters will always be around to support you with a network of hundreds of trainers around the world...
I work in a vet hospital and we do not recommend dog trainers lightly (as other responders to your question would have you believe) - we only recommend the best...we recommend Bark Busters because they trained all of our dogs - and the results were amazing!

    Rescue Dog Training

    • I've said this before....."Do not use a 'franchise' trainer'. Paying $50,000 for a few classes, videos, books and promotional materials does not make someone a dog trainer".
I've dealt with more "RE-TRAINS" than you can shake a stick at. And believe me, by the time I get them...they're REALLY messed up.
      Find a professional.

      Additional:
I'm not talking about you...I'm talking about how THEY get "certified". They have "credibility" from shear numbers. Vets and shelters rarely know squat about dog psychology. They wouldn't know a good trainer from a bad one....especially if they show them some type of "certification". You're just as well off to get a book from the library, or go to petsmart.

    • Many times your vet will know of puppy classes or trainers in your location that are good because his clients will tell him of their own experiences.

I think five hundred is too much, but the idea of "lifelong" is good.

I do think you mean ultrasonic. Unlike the snot that answered before me, here is a link to some different ones on amazon:

Easy Dog Obedience Training Can Be Done at Home With a Do it Yourself Dog Training Program

    • I've never heard of a supersonic (faster than sound) dog trainer, but there are ultra sonic (high frequency) anti-barking devices.

Google "super bark free" for a device which works at 50-60 feet, suitable for an annoying neighbor's dog. It comes with a 60 day free trial.

I'd usually get the asker a link to the product, but your comment was kind of a turn off for me and I don't want to waste my time either.

Do You Need Dog Training Tools When You Train Your Dog?

    Recommended Answer:
Just contact the trainer. They'll probably want you to bring the dog in so that they can evaluate him/her.... and they'll also want to evaluate the methods that you use, and how you use them. They'll let you know what they think is appropriate.

Dog Training With a Halti or General Leader Collar

    • Skip level 1 ? From your comment you have already achieved level 1, 2 and 3 !!
Our human definitions of level - anything - is exactly what you want to define it as. The object of training is to create a bond between the owner/handler (you) and the dog which you both understand and enjoy.
If you believe that you understand the moods and body language your dog portrays - excited, submissive, happy, hungry, and etc. and your dog acts as if he understands everyone of your emotions what more could you ask for.

    • I would talk to the trainer I am going through it now for the 2nd time cause my dog was mad it me the day of testing and wouldn't listen my trainer couldn't believe it but she still failed us.oh well 2 times is not that bad she shows up the other dogs.

    • Sure if the place where you are taking him will allow it. Some places will only take dogs who have completed the basic course with them first. If he knows the basics, I don't see why you couldn't move on up to the second course.

    • You can skip and go to the next level as your dog seems to know all of level 1

    • just go to it as it will do even better and idk wat they do but it will help if u just go
