Dog Health Questions: How should I train this dog?

I have a female chihuahua who is 2 years old. She is over all a very obedient well behaved dog except she is afraid of people (besides me) and if she can't get away from them she will bite at them. She barks at anything rather it be human or animal. I am the only person she will listen to and it has become an escalating problem. I can't afford dog training classes (partially because I am 16 and I don't have a job). Anything you can teach me to be able to handle and improve this situation would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Also if it matters to anyone she is fixed and has been since she was very young, likely around the age of 6 months.

Off! How to Keep "Four on the Floor" - Basic Dog Training

Recommended Answer:
When she is around other people let her know it is a good thing by giving her treats and petting her, get her to sit and have an un familiar come in the room give her treats as they come closer say goood girl and eventually have them pet her 2, it may not happen over night u need to be patient and keep working at it, also if it is not working do not let her feel your frustration it only makes it worse, try to get her out into more public places, just walking around petsmart may help even if u don't buy anything. And always carry treats so when she does not bark at someone or let's them close to her u can let her know she did a good job!

Keeping Your Pet Dog Trained

  • You can train your dog. She is a fear biter, which means you have to very carefully isolate her and teach her to stay on one spot all her own. She may also need a crate. Since you cannot afford a trainer, how about a book. Call up a local trainer, tell them what is going on and ask for specific help, reading recommendations, and local resources. Hope this helps to get you started. Don't give up. Your dog can be trained.

  • watch "Its Me or the Dog" on Animal Planet. its a show about training dogs. the show give different ways on how to deal with all different types of problems*which is helpful because not every dog will respond to one type of training)

  • If you are taking him to obedience class they will teach you everything you need to know. When it comes to pulling on the lead, you stop and wait until the dog walks back to you, give them a treat and you start again. You may have to repeat but they will learn you are the leader not them. Obedience class helps you train your dog to come when called, work with him inside and if you have a yard with a fence outside as much as possible where there are distractions. Remember Praise and treat whenever they come! When it comes to the gerbil there is a thing called leave it you take a treat set it on the ground and say leave it if the dog goes near it cover it with your foot (don't smoosh it :) ) and say leave it again. Eventually your dog should walk away or sit down. when you move your foot to uncover it and he starts to go to it again repeat the proces again, Leave it! They will realize it is something they are not suppose to have and should give up on it completely. You praise and treat when they finally stop going for it :) When your dog has learned that if they go near the cage you say Leave it and they will walk away.

Dog Training Programs - How Do You Decide?

Crate??

7 Top Dog Training Tips

  • Dog training is a great idea! Enroll in a local obedience class, and they can help you with many issues, including potty training.

  • You could enroll her in a dog class. Try petsmart (if you decide to enroll)
But when she goes in the house scold her say "no" and take her outside.
Once she goes outside praise her or give her a treat.
I think once you do this for a while she will begin to realize that going to the bathroom outside is rewarding.
    Hope this helps!

  • yes,it is difficult to start ,i have the same experience with you ,but at last i find a gorgeous book that help me to train my labs ,and i no longer need to send them to the clubs,.

Dog Health Questions: What kind of dog should we adopt?

Me and my fiance are adopting two dogs from the pound this summer. They have to be young because the dog training college we are going to requires that you being your own dog. I already have my heart set on a rottweiler and our local pound always has plenty so that's what I'll be adopting. My fiance didn't really care what breed he got because he loves all dogs he just wanted a bigger breed. Then he started looking and went nuts over treeing walker coon hounds and bloodhounds...But we have an 11 year old siberian husky and he has this soft spot for huskies (pet finder.com always has plenty huskies too) So we can't decide. I mean all breeds would be great but which would you get...the siberian, the treeing walker, or the bloodhound.
Personally I love to get two siberians but I know I'd regret it if I didn't get a rottweiler.

The Benefits Of Positive Dog Training

Recommended Answer:
First thing, puppies and young dogs have the greatest chance of being adopted from the pound. Older dogs have the best chance of being killed. All breeds don't really begin to mellow until they are about 5 years old. On the other hand, any 11 year old dog may find it difficult to adjust to a new one. I've found that older dogs will nurture a puppy, but may oppose an adult. I love Rottweilers and had a super-super Rotty-Great Dane mix. However, an adult Rottweiler may not adjust well to another adult male dog. I recommend bringing a friend's adult dog to your home to find out how your Husky responds. Once you have adopted a dog -- old or young -- it's painful to have to take them back if things don't work out. Good luck.

Free Dog Training Tips

  • A Rottweiler may not be the best idea. They are not great with other dogs, but the pound will likely check the dogs temperament. If you live where it is very cold,a husky or other heavily furred dog is a good idea. If not,a husky and bloodhound are equally good dogs. Bloodhounds are very active dogs, but do love to follow scents.Another husky may be easier for your husky to accept. Also, keep in mind the breed you want may not be at the pound.

  • try a labrador retriever or get the siberian and rottweiler

  • Hi! Visit the website below to check and find out which breed matches your criteria.

    Enjoy searching!

    Thank you.

  • bloodhounds are good for hunting and sniffing things
huskys are athletic so yea i would like a husky

  • Well, I have a pure German Shepard and he's REALLY cute and loving and BIG.

Dog Health Questions: Need advice on dog related careers?

Okay I live in middle Tn and I'm looking into getting into a dog related career. But need advice

Career 1

Dog Trainer:
What does it take to become a dog trainer. I tried with Petco and Petsmart but you have to be a regular retail employee for atleast 3 months before they will even consider you to be a trainer and that is only if a spot comes open for a trainer

What kind of classes or certification would I need and is there like a place that you can get on with that you can do dog training.

Career 2

Dog Groomer

What do I need to know to become one. Do I go through a class or do i get on the job training. What qualification would I need.I'm 22 years old and late in the game. I finally know what I want to do and that is either train or groom and need to get into it pretty fast. After all I have to help support the family (my husband can't be expected to do it all)

So how do I get into it.

ThanksAlso I have 2 dogs and one is a poodle and I'm just now starting to groom him myself

Successful Dog Training Tricks

Recommended Answer:
For both professions I suggest you speak to someone in your area who is doing it. I know that some bigger cities have grooming schools and even obedience training schools, but many people have learned to do it by being an apprentice to a current groomer/trainer. If you are looking to make money right now, that probably won't happen until you've gotten training or experience. You wouldn't make much as an apprentice (maybe minimum wage with no benefits) but you'd be able to learn as you work and eventually apply for a better paying position with another grooming salon or training school.

You could also see if the city shelter is hiring, as they do have paid staff who generally earn anywhere from $8-15 per hour. Other dog-related jobs to look into are pet photography and kennel attendant (care for the dogs being boarded at a vet office). I've been a kennel attendant before. It's fairly easy, doesn't require much training, and will pay $8-10 per hour depending on where you live.

Good luck!

Dog Training Part I

  • I don't know much about training or grooming but if you want a dog related career you could try maybe starting a rescue group or animal shelter. that could be really rewarding. i volunteer at one and im pretty sure i want to start one when i have the chance! its great helping the stray and unwanted dogs find new loving homes. good luck in whatever you decide to do.

  • i work at a boarding kennel and we also groom ... we prefer to hire groomers that have experience, but we will train too, it takes some people a while to learn the patterns and all the other things you need to remember to do on each dog. with grooming you make a commission (usually 50% of the total amount of the groom if you have your own equipment less if you don't have you own) so the more dogs you can groom in a day the better your pay check will be.

as far as training there are obedience schools that will teach you how to train dogs and you will earn a certificate witch will help you get hired at facilities and if you open your own training shop you can say you are certified so people can have more trust in your abilities to train. and as far as pay im not sure what the standard is when you work for someone but if you own the facility most charge anywhere from $100-300 for basic commands. ooh and it's never too late to learn something new! good luck!

Dog Health Questions: How to build a pigeon hutch?

I want to build a bird hutch for keeping pigeons for dog training. Can anyone refer me to a site with some free plans, or explain the best way to build a hutch (as in expensive and easy as possible)? I want to build something small, as i will not be housing more than 6-12 birds at a time.

Proven Dog Training Methods

Recommended Answer:
Step 1Build holding pens that are 2 feet high and 3 square feet. Each of these pens will hold 15 birds comfortably. If you have more birds, build another pen and stack it on the first one. These pens can be situated on legs at any height.

Step 2Make the floor of your pens out of 1/2 foot of plastic wire mesh. The sides of the cage should be made from 2 by 4 wire fencing.

Step 3Add perch boxes 2 rows high. Also nail 2 by 4's end to end in the shape of an "I" to the floor. This gives the pigeons a place to perch and sleep at night.

Step 4Place a piece of cardboard and a plastic slip sheet in between the stacked pens. This will allow you to clean the area without hassle. Once a month, simply pull the slip sheet out and dump it into an empty feed back. Wash it or scrape gently and your cleaning is done.

Step 5Use a pressure washer to clean the cages. Make sure the pigeons have been moved to another cage while you wash them. You could severely injure your birds if you do not remove them from the cages prior to washing.

Step 6Consider the great features of your pen. By housing them in this manner, they are always outside. This is perfect for their health because they get constant sunlight and fresh air. This set-up also allows for easy bathing of the birds. Once a week, you can simply spray the birds down with the water hose and cleaning is complete.

Dog Health Questions: How much does it cost to have a puppy microchipped, spayed and immunized during the first year?

I would love to get a puppy, but caring for a fur-baby is very expensive. Does anyone know the cost of professional dog training? What other hidden costs should I consider before I adopt an animal? Also, I would love to use the dog with elderly people as a therapy animal. Has anyone worked with the delta socity or taken the AKC good citizen test?
-- Thank you for your consideration

Dog Training - How to Housebreak an Adopted Dog

    Recommended Answer:
Microchip(depending on type), probably $60-100; spayed, around $125-200; immunized, around $75-150 depending on what all you get.

    Dog Training Fundamentals

    • All depends on your area. Call around to several vets and ask.

Look in the yellow pages for dog obedience.

Feed, Vet bills, training, toys etc.

That's why we don't have a dog. JUST a cat, a hamster & some fish! Too costly right now to own a dog.

    • all that should run you100-130$ a small price for a loving addition to your family!! i think micro-chipping is a great idea although my dogs dont have it you can get him regitered and chipped for 80$ you can save some cash by giving him 7 way shots you can buy at a pet store or tractor supply for a few bucks and save that 60 dollar vet bill! it covers all but the rabies that is only needed 2 times in the first year and may already have 1 when you get him

    • This is an impossible task to guess the costs. Call around. I will say, my local Humane Society microchips animals for $15--anything that helps animals find their home is important to them, so the cost is low. They also run clinics on site, at least here. They don't only care for shelter animals, and fees are very reasonable.

    • Hi! Owning a dog is VERY expensive- more so than most people know. It is tough to give a good estimate on spay, vaccines, and microchipping without a general idea of your location as it varies so much from place to place. Here I am unsure of microchipping price, however vaccines, exams, and spaying alone is probably about 350-400 dollars... that includes worming which is optional here but highly recommended as many puppies have worms. One of my dogs has taken the CGC and passed- it was tough to train for but dedication and hard work make it come true... and keep in mind that not all dogs make for good therapy animals either- some are naturally afraid of the scents and noises etc. As for hidden costs- you have to account for regular vet visits- have some back up funds for any emergencies (hopefully there are none), and you should also consider there is food to buy, if you live in an area where fleas can prevail- flea medication... and heartworm prevention are all considerations. This hopefully won't deter you from getting one- just make sure you are aware of the commitment (financially and otherwise)... and do your research on the dog breeds... good luck!

    • YES!! I do pet therapy with dogs from my shelter and the people LOVE IT! I would highly highly suggest GO TO AN ANIMAL SHELTER! You pay a low adoption fee, and included in the fee is spay/neuter, microchipping, leash collar, etc. (well, at least that's how it is at my shelter.) There are so many awesompe pups and adult dogs that you can't get at a breeder. NEVVERR go to a pet store, you get NOTHING for you money. Not even a high quality dog like you think you're paying for. (Also dogs from pet stores come from puppy mills but that's not what you are asking) Anyway, the only thing people sometimes forget when adopting a dog is that it does get expensive with vet bills. However, by going to a shelter or rescue you're dog's shots will be up to date, they will be spayed/neutered (and if they are young enough, most REQUIRE you to do it or have you put down a deposit), and you'd be saving a hefty amount of money. Also, food. You can usually find very high quality food thru breeders, perhaps on the internet. I never suggest getting food from your local grocery store because a lot of that food isn't even good for the dog. There are actually recipes for you to cook up for your dog that involve greens and meat, which are fun to make and 1000000% better for your dog that kibbles and bits. Ha ha.. im going on and on. All I can say is that You can adopt a very good puppy from your local animal shelter, and obedience training ranges. It's actually easy to do it yourself, if you have patience, and there's good books out there that explain everything! Oh my gosh.. if you really want you can email me, i have so much to say haha.

    • If you adopt through your county animal control or the humane society, your pet will be chipped, neutered and have all it's shots already, all for the price of the adoption fee. It's a great deal and you are saving that animal from death row!

    • all my dogs carry the CGN (Canadian version of CGC) needles will run you around 160.00 spay depends on the size but a GSD is close to 300.00 microchip 60.00 dog training 80.00 for 6 classes.

    • Yes it can be the exact cost will vary but in my area it looks a bit like this
Shots 3 sets 80 x 3 (they now suggest the rabbies and last DHLPP be given in seprate visits)
microchip $20 (same visit as rabies)
Puppy Class $99 for 6 weeks
Basic Obdience $99 for 6 weeks
Pet Health insurance $30 a month (Petsbest is great they cover 80% of the vet bills for accident or illness)
Spay $200 (may be diffrent for you my baby is extra sensitive to anestisia)
Flea, tick and heartworm meds $200 a year

    • These costs are all very different for what kind of dog you get. You see some dogs cost more to train, smaller the cheaper, less problems the cheaper.

As for me, there is no price to big to have a well socialized and healthy puppy.

Try looking into your local area humane society for "low" cost spay/neuter clinics (they usually do immunizations) and puppy microchipping events (usally at your local aspca). Sometimes going to a teaching animal clinic (such as the one we have here at OhioStateUiversity) are more likely to offer lower priced services but the quality will suffer none. Our dog just recently went for his first check-up and was given an amazing exam by a fourth year vet student, a resident vet and the head(faculty) vet. Count that! Three people for the low costing price of one.

I know people say do your homework on dogs and breeders, but little people remember to tell you... do your homework on your VET! Never go to a vet recommended by a Petland (or other such puppy store where they get their pups from puppy mills) they are low quality and sometimes not even with the American Veternarian Society!

Good Luck and feel free to email me if you need more guidence or knowledge!(costs for here in Ohio, USA)
      [microchip]

$20 - $30 with registration at the local humane society

      [spay]

$70.00 at the local humane society
$95 at the local vet teaching hospital (OSU)

      [puppy kindergarten/training]

$85 at OSU with veternarian/ behavioralist

      [immunizations]

varry depending on how many you have done so far usually $12-$15 at OSU (per set)

Dog Health Questions: Los angeles dog trainers?

Does anyone know of any dog trainers in Los Angeles that specialize in pit bulls? My friend has a very over-excited dog that needs obedience training as well as possible guard dog training.

Review - Secrets to Dog Training is Unparalleled Canine Training Resource

    • I have a female pit whom is very energetic. Some things your friend can do is take the dog on long walks and get like a doggy backpack and fill it with items to make him or her work harder. When you return home the dog should be some what tired if they walked long enough if not do more energetic activities to go with the dog. Like running, fetch or swimmming. When the dog is tired but not dead tired is the best time to try a little bit of training. Just remember one word for each thing you want him or her to learn. Pits are very intelligent dogs and very hard working, with a lot of energy proper training and working out is needed. If you cannot spare the time for the dog then maybe that is not the dog for you.

    • A trainer can train your friend's dog, but when the dog is with your friend, he will not have the respect for his owner that he does for his trainer, and your friend may not be able to enforce his commands to his own dog. Your friend needs to learn how to work the dog himself, even if he uses a trainer. Training does not equal automatic respect and obedience. He has to earn respect with his dog just like he does with everyone else. The going rates for dog trainers are $600-$1000 a month in the areas which I have personal experience-- I have hired dog trainers. To train a dog from zero to guard dog is going to cost your friend in the neighborhood of $3000 to $5000 at least. Plus his dog will have to go live with the trainer at his kennel facilities. Choosing a good trainer can be very difficult, and he may find himself $3500 poorer, with a dog who is badly trained.

He should join a local Schutzhund club. Schutzhund is a sport that combines tracking, obedience, and protection work. Other possibilities might be PSA or Ring Sport, if available in his area, which put more emphasis on the personal protection portion in the context of competition. You can find a club in your area on the Schutzhund USA website which I have listed as a source below. For PSA or Ring Sport, you should do an Internet search.

If your friend trains in Schutzhund, or other sport involving protection work as well as obedience, then he is working with a group of people who can support him and his goals. Everyone has a different training approach, and that can be very useful in applying techniques to see which method works with his dog best. He will gain the respect, obedience and attention of his own dog, and spend much much less than what he would to hire a dog trainer. Training the dog himself will increase the dog's focus, control and discipline and it should help with his excitability issues as well.

Exercise is also another avenue to control excitability in dogs. Lack of exercise often causes behavorial problems in high energy dogs.

    • Sure, Cesar Millan... The Dog Whisperer! He runs a dog psychology center in LA that works with a lot of pits. Probably kind of expensive though!

Dog Health Questions: I want to become a service dog trainer.?

Do you have to go to some sort of school for service dog training?
what schools for that are good? ( preferably in Alaska)
What age do you attend a school like that? I still want to go to Biola when i go to college.
I just want to train and breed service dogs myself....
How do I certify myself or the dog???

Dog Training Plays Key Role in Dog Grooming and Puppy Care

    Recommended Answer:
You either apprentice with a service dog training organization or go to a school like Bergin University. http://berginu.org/

Since it typically takes 18-24 months to fully train a service dog, expect your apprenticeship to take about three years.

For breeding, you really should have a college degree in animal husbandry to learn all that is necessary for such a breeding program. We aren't talking about breeding pets, where you put a male and a female together and hope for the best. A service dog breeding program involves indepth study of each potential breeding candidate's family history and genetics. You have to know how different genetic diseases are transmitted, how to identify affected individuals as well as carriers, how to remove or magnify specific traits from your gene pool, and much more if you're to do a good job of it.

Just putting two nice dogs together and hoping is going to tend to produce only one usable dog in 100. That means 99 others to find homes for. A good service dog breeding program succeeds in 7 out of 8 live births, and those culled from service work can usually be placed in another career. Those that can't are still given training to make them desirable pets. That's a big investment to make with a large number of dogs you can't use for your program.

Dog Health Questions: Dog training help?????????

I am trying to train my husky to walk on s leash but I'm hitting a snag, I can walk her around my backyard and she does fine and follows me but when I try to take her around block she just goes 5 feet from the door and she sits there, treats don't work she will just literally sit there no joke! She won't chase a treat if tossed in front of her nor will she want to eat it if you put it in front of her, you will have to pick her up and go inside because you will stay on the front yard for awhile before she moves 2 feet.

Also how do I catch her when she does something bad? She will run around out backyard forever till she gives up in a corner and by then it's been 15mins, it takes awhile because I have a large backyard. I don't use her name when I call her I will offer treats, tell her to sit and stay, which she knows how to do, and don't chase her, I move a little and she jumps up and darts away, I stop and this continues for a long time.

Top Three Problems Solved by a Secret to Dog Training

    Recommended Answer:
Maybe your dog has responded well to your command in the past but was inadvertently punished for her good behavior. This could mean that you called her over then immediately locked her in a crate, or called her over and plonked her straight into a soapy bath (which she hates!).
General Rules To Keep In Mind When Training Your Dog The Fast Come Command

Never under any circumstances punish your dog when she comes back to you. Even if your dog seems to take an eternity to respond to you and you've got smoke coming out of your ears through frustration, it's important that you don't get angry with your dog. She'll associate your anger with the last action she did - which was coming to you.

Your goal is to make coming to you a more attractive option to your dog than any other alternative action.

Never let your dog off leash in public before you have your dog responding very well to your come command. Your dog has to work her way up to this privilege - see the steps involved in the dog training come command below.

Your come command should be something your dog looks forward to hearing, something she has a positive association with. You do this by making it wonderful each she comes to you, make it worth her while. Certainly do not only use the command to call your dog over to snap the leash back on after an off leash run, or to call her away from fun. Incorporate the come command training into your daily activities. Use it to call your dog over for her dinner or call her over at anytime just to give her a scratch behind the ear or a tasty treat.

When you are teaching your dog the come command off leash and your dog doesn't respond, don't chase after her, first try waiting for her. If you do have to go and retrieve her don't punish her when you catch up with her, just go home or start your training session again, this time on leash.

Never call your dog in situations where you know your dog won't come to you. You don't want your dog to think that sometimes it is ok if she doesn't respond to your "come" command. It has to be every time, and your dog must never get away with not respecting it.

As with all obedience training commands start your training sessions out easy, master one step then move on and build upon it. Challenge your dog along the way, but don't move too quickly. Your dog will gain confidence all the way along this process.
Depending on what level you and your dog are up to in your obedience training, you can apply one or all of the steps outlined below. I've found that if you apply repetition, reinforcement and patience to these training techniques, you and your dog will achieve great results.

    Walking On A Leash-
(Always work in a fenced in area)
    • Start by attaching a light-weight leash to your puppy's collar.
    • Drop the leash and let the puppy drag it around.
    • Call your puppy, tell her "good girl", hug her,
and pet her...whatever feels good to both of you.
    • Leave the leash on for only a few minutes and
never leave it on her when you are not with her.
    • Do this several times over a few days and pretty soon
your pup won't even notice the leash.

First, you need a 4 foot leash and a collar that won't slip off.
Start by having your dog sit on your left side facing front just like you.
As you say "Let's go", take a step starting with your left foot. Using your left foot all of the time will signal your dog that you are about to walk.
Walk at your normal walking pace and talk to your dog while you walk. Tell her what a good girl she is. You want her to be happy walking with you. Keep talking to her. Make it fun.
Go a few feet, then stop. You can praise her now. Or you can have her sit and then praise her...as long as she stays with you.
Practice for 5-10 minutes several times a day. Keep it fun!

Dog Health Questions: Any dog training ideas/advice?

My dog is very behaved most of the time.. and we have been letting her off her leash in the yard to do her business and a little playing time or whatnot.. well, today I came home and thought I'd bring out the ball and play some fetch with her and she loved it, only it wasn't too long until the ball wasn't enough excitement for her and she felt she needed to go check out the road where she knows she isn't allowed, and I tried telling her come here, heel, etc. all of which she knows, and she didn't listen, and continued to just go on and check out the neighborhood, and so I walked after her issuing the same commands, and of course every time I would get close, she'd run farther. She has never done this before.. I don't know what got into her. I'm a little weary about letting her out at all without the leash now.. How did she all of a sudden turn into an evil dog?? how do you punish a dog correctly?

      7 Types of Dog Training

      Recommended Answer:
ok well first u dont just want to punish the dog. u want to make the dog want to come to u. so try buying a 30 foot leash and strapping it on her collar(just dont let her get out of reach) then when she wonders off and gets distracted u can grab the leash, say come(or whatever command ur using) and if she doesnt come then u give the leash a nice firm tug and say come once more and if she doesnt come then try it again a lil harder and when she does, be really happy and dont be afraid to throw a lil ball or give her a treat or something. ur teaching the dog that coming to u is better than going off on her own. and contionue to do this for a while then try no leash and call her often and a lot of praise each time and occasionally gop back to using some treats and when she gets rusty then go back to the leash.

Using a Good Dog Training Tip

      • Well you really got understand their point of view, you gotta have patience, and you gotta have treats! try checkin out some books on dog training. There are tons of tricks to teach. This goes for all tricks you wanna teach, you have to have a treat, say the name of the command, and show the dog what to do. After you show him, give him (or her) a treat. Do this over and over. Eventually they will catch on and learn

      • show her more love..show her that you love her..give her attention..apparently she wants more attention..take her for walks..play fetch or tug a war! she'll love you again in a heart beat if u give her a lot of attention!

      • you should lightly tap her on the butt and tell her no and reward her when she starts doing stuff right and she will start to be the same dog she was

Dog Health Questions: Dog training..barking and jumping?

I have 3 dogs...8 yr old d lab/retriever mix...7 yr old lab/shepherd mix and a lab that is 1.5 yrs old. Here is my problem. When ppl come to the house they all rush the door...barking non stop. We have to hold them back. It is annoying and embarrassing. I have tried working with them with treats to sit and stay with my husband knocking on the door. 2 of the 3 dogs will focus on me and the treat the other one just starts barking immediately...the older one. Because she does this the other 2 will lose focus while I am trying to calm her and make her sit.

Any other suggestions...I do not agree with any physical aggression in training at all.

      Dog Training Fundamentals

      Recommended Answer:
Maybe try and work with each one separately. I alway use praise when they do what they are told, not treats. Take one out in the yard and teach him to heal. (Sit at your left side and stay until you tell him ok). Use a leash to train with. Pull up with the leash and push down on his behind until he sits. Keep repeating Sit. They key is repetition with each dog and then with two dogs and then three. It may take a little longer with 3 dogs, but you can do it. Just be patient. Good Luck!

      Electronic Dog Training Collar

      • You need to be the pack leader, but it sounds like the older dog has that role. Also when you say you're trying to calm the older dog depending on exactly what you're doing you may just be reinforcing the bad habit.

I would find a good local trainer and work with them to resolve this, keep in mind that for some dogs to learn a new skill or release a bad habit it can require doing it with them up to 200 times before they really "get it".

      • You can try having all 3 dogs on a leash so that when your guest comes thru the door you have a reliable way to pull the dogs back and to calm them down before letting them in

      • Misbehaving dogs can be embarrassing and annoying at times, and dog training may cost alot of money and time especially when u have more than one dog.

Dog Health Questions: What type of training collar should I get?

When I was at dog training today, i used her regular collar, and she slipped out of it a few times. The trainer recommended a brand of training collar starting with a M, and i cant seem to remember the name. It was a flat training collar that has a chain it connects to in the back, that connects to your leash. Anyone know what brand this is or what type of collar i should get?

Dog Training Problems - How to Overcome Them

      Recommended Answer:
Martingale - they're used for breeds like greyhounds, whippets, salukis, etc.; breeds that have narrow heads so its easy to slip out of collars. It would be a good choice for training - all pet stores carry them.

Are Electronic Shock Collars Great Dog Training Devices?

      • The collar is called a Martingale collar. It is a wonderful collar for sight hounds or dogs whose necks are larger than their heads (ie greyhounds). I recommend these collars to anyone because they are easy to use, gentle, and your dog can't slip out of them if properly fit.
There are two different kinds, the ones with the chain, and the ones with the material or leather depending on the type of collar you get. They are sold at PetSmart, PetCo. and a few other stores.
My shepherd mix has to wear one, and he does great. His is a blue canvas one from Lupine. They guarantee their collars, harnesses, leashes, etc. even through chewing. I recommend a martingale from them.

      • Martingale/Half-check

        I got mine here - http://www.pet365.co.uk/search.php?searc…

You can make your own. All the metal parts to it you can get on eBay from the seller zjaw24w
And it's basically just polypropylene webbing with grosgrain ribbon on top.
I find the £14.99 price a bit high, i have a sewing machine so make my own now exactly the same, same hardware used in those collars and webbing just cheaper because i make it myself.

      • Martingale is the name. If you're still not sure, call or ask the trainer when you can.

      • Martingale

Dog Health Questions: Dog training please help.?

do you need any training your self to train a dog? i noticed i'm very good at training dogs and teaching them obedience. even older dogs. so do you need a degree or anything to train dogs?

i've even taught my dog silent commands. i will open my hand for speak and all kinds of things and i would love to teach dogs for the deaf so they can use hand signals, my dog know sit, stay, come, up, lay down, rollover, and shake all with hand signals and commands.

of course i wouldn't charge anyone who is deaf or handicapped i would love to train their dogs for free but i do love animals and i would love to be a dog trainer, of course i would need to make some money to buy treats to train them with and other necessaties. and some money to pay my bills. lol. so do i need any special degrees schooling or anything to become a dog trainer?

      Agility Dog Training Equipment

      Recommended Answer:
Wow you sound as if you are a natural with animals which is not a common thing. Some people d not use plain common sense and you do.If you wish to become a professional trained there are different schools or qualifications you need to obtain and it varies from country to country but since you have a head start on other you would do fine.If you are in the US check out the AKC and they will head you in the right direction.Usually what happens is people do Obedience with their dogs get to a very high qualification and then go for exams so they can be instructors.Hope you reach your goal and you obviously realize you have talent but bear in mind there are some real problem dogs around that need real professional help as they need re-training and some you can never re-train as their owners have created the problem and the dog suffers because of that.GOOD LUCK

Dog Training Schools - Who is Being Trained, You Or the Dog

      • i am a dog trainer myself and when people call you to train there dogs it is usually when the behaviour they want trained has gotten out of hand and they will ask you to fix behaviour problems rather then teaching trick so its probably best to become qualified to know how to read a dogs behaviour. if you work well with dogs already that is a big bonus on your side and you will be ahead of other people learning to be a trainer. having knowledge behind you will also help with people taking you more serious as a Trainer

      • No, you do not need a degree to train a dog. There are some professions like doctor or hair stylist that each state demands a certification from...dog training is not one. Although, if you do have some credentials it will make it much easier to solicit clients. I would recommend checking out the Certification for Pet Dog Trainers website. They give an exam twice a year for positive reinforcement training...and if you pass you will be certified a professional dog trainer, and you will have credentials behind your name, Lindsay Myers, CPDT. This lets people know you have actually tested and are certified, but no, you will not be fined or shut down if you train without a certification.

Dog Health Questions: Dog Training Job/GED?

Basically, I want to be a dog trainer. I have a good college for animal behavior & Dog training set up, to a school program where you get a degree that is most prefered by places.
But, I'm still in school - I'm a senior, but I'm not going to pass. I'm failing all my classes, and I have alot going on at home and such, I can't really take all the pressure and stress. So I figured I'd drop out and get my GED - do you think I could still be successful?

Dog Training - Avoiding Common Training Mistakes

      Recommended Answer:
I've heard of successful people that had no HS diploma and went on and worked hard and became successful. If your a senior just stay in school and ask your guidance counselor that you need help and want to bring your grades up. Some drop out, intending to get their GED and never do. And despite what everyone thinks, getting your GED isn't a piece of cake! At school you get everything during a set of courses per semester per year. When you take the GED, you get everything thrown at you at once, and not to mention the time limits on the testing parts.

My cousin dropped out of high school when she was 15 and didn't get her GED until she was almost 30(she had kids so it was hard for her to get at it and achieve the GED).

You can still be successful with a GED though. You can still become a dog trainer if you really want it and go after it. I don't know how old you have to be to take the GED where you are at but here you have to be at least 16.

A GED is the same as a High school diploma, the only difference is that the person with the HS diploma stuck out for 4 years while the GED they may have gotten dropped and got their diploma before their graduating class or got it after their graduating class.

Choosing Between Dog Training Schools and Animal Behavior Specialists

      • Some employers don't care; others look at a GED and see "quitter."
If you couldn't handle high school, how are you going to handle Real Life? You don't get a do-over in the real world when your personal life goes to hell; you're expected to keep on keeping on.

It's only October. You've got seven months left of the school year. Don't just piss it away and whine that it was too hard. If home is a hard place to do your studying, do it at the library or at school (take the late bus home). You can talk to your school counselor about the stuff that's making you crazy, but it's your job to do your school work and pass your classes.

      • Sure, why not?
I dropped out and got my GED with no problem- We had family issues too, including a death in the family, but...

Im now a Dog Groomer and I have a promising career in that as well as Dog Handling now. :) Its who you know, not what you know, because the Dog world is very politcal.

      • yes, if you put your mind to it, you could get your GED. you could also drop out of your school and sign up for online school which allows you to work at your own pace (expensive, but works) it is up to you

if you are interested in online school, i used keystonehighschool.com

      • YES! You can definitely still do really well.
        Good luck!

      • Successful? Yes, maybe...As successful? No. Not at all, talk to your teachers find out if there is any way you can do extra credit and things to bring your grades up to passing, giving up is never the answer and you will not make as much as money as you could with your diploma. Didn't the school year just start not too long ago? You should have plenty of time to bring your grades up.

Are you going to drop out of college if you start failing? Try to finish high school, you're almost done no sense in throwing it all away.

add: WOW really? No one is going to tell this person to stay in school? Dropping out as a senior or at any grade for that matter is one of the most ignorant things you could do.

Dog Health Questions: Dog Training for American Staffies?

I have a one and a half year old amstaff which is a gorgeous girl, but utterly untrainable. if you have food, she will sit, stay, shake and go to her bed but aside from that, jumps all over guests, generally won't do as asked, will not come when called (unless it suits her), and still nips occasionally.
i love her to pieces but she is a naughty dog!
has anyone got any training advice?

Dog Training Collars and Harnesses - Making the Proper Selection is Essential to Training Success

      Recommended Answer:
When guests come, she has to be on leash so that you can catch her. When she jumps up, gently put her back on the ground and give her an "off" command. When on the ground reward her and tell her "good off".

When she is out and about, she always has to have a leash on. Don't try and chase her, they think it's a big game! Run the other way! When she comes back, give her TONS of treats and lots of praise. If you have a friend who can help you, you can practice restrained recalls to get her come a lot better. Have your friend hold her collar. You then tough a treat to her nose, run away and call her in an excited voice. This gets the dog excited to come to you.

When she nips, give her a firm "No" or "Ouch" and then ignore her for a little bit. If she sits or starts acting polite, then reward her for being a good girl.

Terriers have a mind of their own! They can be very naughty and generally just want to do what they want. Don't get frustrated and stay happy. Who wants to come to an angry person! So patience is the best thing with the Terriers even thought they are difficult.

Who Let The Dogs Out? Pointers For In Home Dog Training

      • I think that you may be talking about Electric collars. If so, Dogtra and Tritronics both sell excellent products and you can buy directly from them. Hope I helped!!

      • a model that can control 2 collars-are you talking about a remote collar-or a leash that attaches to 2 collars?
for a remote collar-i recommend Innotek, Dogtra or Tri-Tronics
        http://www.leerburg.com/electric.htm

for a standard training collar-i use a prong collar with a nylon slip as a back up in-case it comes undone during a correction.
        http://www.leerburg.com/prong.htm

there are leashes that are made to attach to 2 collars, or a collar and a harness.
        http://www.ellaslead.com/inc/sdetail/101…
But it is cheaper to buy a coupler and use that.

      • I don't know the name of what you are looking for but I do remember seeing one when I was looking for my dog a training collar. Go to www.thepetstoreonline.com. They are really reasonable and if you purchase something over $75 you get free shipping. Oh and they sent me like 12 extra batteries for free. My collar works great and I haven't even had to change the battery even once.

      • I believe you are talking about electronic training collars. I've been through several and the only brand that lasted is Tri-Tronics. The best prices I found were from Cabela's. You can also but them directly from the manufacturer and they have a program that lets you trade in your old collars of any brand. The brands that didn't last for me are Innotec, DT Systems, and Petsafe.

      • This is about as good as there is unless you want to go for a pricy one.
        http://www.dobbsdogs.com/catalog/index.p…

      • if you use pincher or chocker collars that can end up having your dog get cancer and a regular can do this too if you always pull them. get it a harness and you can pull and tug.

      • tritronics has some good ones. or you can just type 'remote dog collars into your search engine and do some research. what you plan to use it for will determine the type you should get . we have tritronics for hunting, and a small inotek for hikes. yu can go directly to the manufacturer, or try bass pro shops or cabella's. but like i said, do some really good research. they have come a long way in the last several years and have a lot of options now.

Dog Health Questions: Does anyone know of any good Dog training schools?

Any area is okay, as I'm willing to travel. I DO NOT WANT LINKS TO THE ABC, I am not an online class person, and I feel that that is a lazy way out. Also, you can only learn so much online, without hands on work.

Any one know of any? Any suggestions?

Dog Training - Instructions to Train Your Dog

      Recommended Answer:
Amy, I would really just suggest you find yourself a good mentor. Some of the schools, even when the come highly recommended, aren't worth anything. I've met several people that have spent a good bit of money on training schools, and they could've learned so much more in their own backyard. Certifications in dog training mean nothing. Once you've mastered your craft, you get endorsed. That would be my suggestion. Good luck.

Dog Training Schools - Who is Being Trained, You Or the Dog

      • here is a good dog training school site.http://www.nk9.com/

      • only the book work is online in ABC. You don't need a class room to read and write. The whole second half of the course is all hands on you log volunteer hours at shelters and then get to spend up 21 weeks shadowing an experienced trainer and working with clients and dogs Its a very thorough program, the best I have seen.

      • Personally I would never take my dog to a training school.
There are lots of good books out there, and free info on the
Internet, besides, it is not only the dog that needs to be trained, it is also the dog owner believe it or not. A friend of
mine sent their dog off to a training camp and it cost them
$3,000. I started off with a dog training for dummies book, about $20, and lots of free info on the Internet, and my
5 month old shepherd really outshines their 2 year old.
I can even walk through a group of people without a leash and he never leaves my side untill I tell him o-k. The number
of tricks I have taught him is unbelievable and at 5 months we have just begun. It is a very rewarding feeling to do it yourself. Get to know your dog real well, and discover the bad habbits
that come naturally to the owner and it is easy. The down
side is that you have to spend about half an hour every day
training and retraining, but well worth it.
