Dog Health Questions: What is the Best Large Breed Puppy dry dog food?

I am getting an 8 week old giant schnauzer next week and I would like to know what you recomend for a puppy. Schnauzers are prone to allergies so low allergie is good. No wheats and gains is what I read but i am not sure. I am looking for low salt and fat. I want a dog food that will be good for helping him grow big and tall. Please tell me what you reccomend. Also what kind of dog training treats would be good? Let me know. I really appreaciate it.

Canidae.
Wellness Fish and Sweet Potato.
Canidae is for all life stages so you don't have to worry about when to switch and what to switch him to.
This particular Wellness is for dogs who are prone to allergies, but you might just try the Wellness Super 5 for starters...
All of these foods are made of all-natural human quality ingredients from US suppliers (so no recalls like wih the Chinese wheat gluten and rice protein)
None contain corn or wheat, empty fillers which cause or exacerbate allergies.
Both companies make treats that are compatible with the dry food. My dogs and the ones who come to the doggy daycare where I work, all LOVE the Canidae snap-biscuits.
My 3 dogs eat Canidae, one who is real prone to allergies switches to the fish and sweet potato formula in July/Aug when the grass goes to seed, it seems to help more. These foods have put hair on a little chest that was bare for over 4 years!
Here are links to the products I recommended so you can check them and their ingredients out yourself...DO CHECK!! Sounds like you have already done some research, kudos for that. And congrats on your new baby, may you have many long happy healthy years together.

Dog Training Tips - Training Dogs For Your Own Benefit

  • You should be following the breeder's recommendation here. Some of the best brands are Innova, Solid Gold, Timberwolf Organics, Wellness and Canidae. All of them are first rate foods with none of the cheap fillers like corn or rice gluten, beet pulp, wheat or sorghum that dogs don't digest.

My dogs favourite treats are oven roasted chicken breast strips made by Cadet - the only ingredient is chicken - and the dogs absolutely love them!

  • Lol golden gal is like a tv ad but its true

  • I feed my German shepherd Canidae and he loves it. I did some research when I got him and Canidae is 1 of the 2 best foods you can buy according to just about every source I found. My dog loves it and it's not that expensive. I think I pay $35 for a 40lbs bag.

  • how cute! i have a mini schnauzer. be sure you choose a hight quality dog food like canidae, wellness, solid gold, california natural, and the like. stay away from grocery store brands like purina, eukanuba, ol'roy, etc. personally, if you choose one of the higher quality brands, you can't go wrong. and the price of these dog foods are really no more expensive than some of the supposed good brands of dog food. good luck.

  • Eagle Pack ... It's a bit expensive ... But worth the extra $.

  • I would reccomend the Nutro natural plan. Its cheap about 10$ and it helps alot. My yorkie eats it. Small breed food tho. =]

  • Your pup is a Giant breed not a Large breed. You should feed him Canidae. It is great for Giant breeds like yours. It has only 24% protein which is very important for slow growth to allow stong bone developement and muscle developement.
Canidae is for pups all the way up and into adulthood. So you will never have to change his food. It doesnt have any by products or corn or wheat or soy. It is all natural and human grade.
Start your pup off on the right food with Canidae.

Haha! I guess your right, it does sound like a tv add!

  • Nutro natural is a GREAT food for large breed pups. I used it with my newf that had skin allergies.

  • I don't know who thumbs-downed your good answers... but Canidae is a great food and that's what I feed my dogs.

Innova and Eagle Pack are also good -in fact, they are COMPLETELY GRAIN FREE! Which is great for a dog food.

Merrick, California Naturals, Solid Gold, or Wellness would be good options to consider.

    Check out this site:
    http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com
it reviews all dog foods and grades them on a 6 star scale. It even has detailed reviews explaining why foods were graded the way they were.

As far as treats go, I feed my dogs the Canidae Snap Biscuits and Ark Naturals Sea Cucumber Vension Jerkey. I love the Ark Naturals treats because they have glucosamine, msm, and sea cucumber in them. With a Giant Breed dog, you may want to consider some sort of supplement for joint problems.

  • Well I would recomend IAMS or Science Diet Large breed Puppy and right now you should not have to worry about allergies to foods. Most allergies don't develop until they are at least 1 year of age. Don't worry about it now! If you try to take care of it before they are allergic, you will not be able to use and otc dog food to help with the allergies you will have to get a prescription diet from the vet and they are COSTLY!!

Some allergy signs to watch for are ear problems, itchy face and tummy, excessive licking of feet or legs, pink skin.

We feed our little Oscar real meat. He loves raw beef. Oscar won't even look at food that was purchased in a pet store. The only pet products purchased is for bathing.
