Dog Health Questions: Cant think of anything new to train my dog...any cool trick ideas?

my chihuahua/italian grey hound mix "Millie" is INCREDIBLY smart. ive had her 9 days now. she came from the dog pound knowing absolutely nothing.

so far she has learned:
sit
lay down
take a bow
high five (one paw)
high ten (both paws)
stay
come
back up

this is all in 9 days mind you, so she is super smart and aims to please, i really want to teach her something new (in a few days tho, im giving her time to master these ones though she pretty much already has)

ooo also, when she is sleepy and doesnt want the toy im trying to give her, she will push it away with her nose... then if i keep doing it (just to see what she does) she will cover it with the blanket she always lays on and go back to sleep haha... and if she is sleeping, and i wisper in her ear "millie, wanna go potty?" or any other thing, she will cover her ears with her paws like "no! i dont want to, i want to sleep!!!". XD i wish i could post the video its so cute, but i dont know how to get vids from my phone online. btw, i dont always mess with her when shes sleeping, just once in a while, she gets plenty of sleep while im at work lol

anyway, enough about her, please give me some cool trick ideas. ive done dog training for friends/family, but just basic commands. i want her to learn something really cool. she wont roll over yet tho cause it makes her nervous for some reason, so i cant teach roll over or the *bang* trick where you pretend to shoot them and they play dead, eventually she will learn it though

Sounds like you got a great dog. You two have already accomplished quite a bit in just a short time. Congrats!! I have a pit bull mix and he does quite a bit of stuff and he does it in English and Spanish. LOL.. it was kinda by accident. We picked him up off the street when he was thrown out of a car. We didn't realize that he was trained in spanish by his previous owner. We found out when I told my daughter to sit down in spanish and he did too. LOL.. anyway we taught him in spanish first then started doing everything in english as well.

One of the coolest things he does is I will put a treat on his paw and tell him not to get it until I count to 3. Then I start counting. 1,2,24,62,10,19,3. No matter what numbers I use, I try to keep the tone of voice I use the same and monotone. Then I tell him 3 at the end. That is his release and he can eat it then. It's cute, he looks at me right in the eyes and watches me the entire time and patiently waits for me to say 3. He's a great dog, and I couldn't have a better pet. Good luck with your new puppy.

Dog Training Tools and Advice

  • DUDE GREAT IDEA! TEACH IT TO SPEAK! AND NOT JUST ANY LANGUAGE! TEACH IT FRENCH! THAT WOULD BE AWESOME! I'M SERIOUS! YOU SHOULD DO IT! THAT WOULD BE SO COOL!

  • Get a hula-hoop and teach her to jump through it. Broom & mop handles, storage boxes, laundry baskets, stools/chairs can all be jumps too.

Teach her to turn in circles and figure 8's.

Teach her to count. You teach her a Q to start her barking and another to make her stop. YOU are actually counting, but the Q's are so small people think she's counting.

The book "Dog Tricks for Dummies" has some cool things to teach her too.

  • Speak, Crawl, Beg, Kiss, Jump, Turn Around, Yawn, Dig, Circle, Got to bed, Wave. Good luck on teaching your dog these tricks and check out this site its pretty cool type a trick in the box
    http://idodogtricks.com/index_flash.html

  • Teach her to dance... ^_^ somehow our puppy figure this one out by jumping in circle.. hahha.. Teach her also to shake hands, or speak...(seriously! - i saw videos on youtube dogs really can sounds like what you say), but not all the words, they just imitating the sound with their howling).

That's just a few little ideas, just Have fun !!

  • teach her to blow bubbles in water.

  • Its great that u love ur dog so much.. . . . . Dogs are very clever. They have the reasoning power. They will do anything if u love them and feed them well. U should never beat them or else they will never do the thing u teach them.even if they do they wont continue Have u ever seen dog crying. I have seen it. I worked before in animal rescue. They dont like when u beat them. U should keep talking to them all the time but not when they are sleeping. Coming back to ur dog question, if he is unable to get the move u want to teach, than u should do it ur self when ur teaching. Best time to teach them is when they are playing. If he is sitting in one place them he must be resting. Ur free time may not be his time to learn. So u must co operate with his time, ur dog will not makeup mind whenever u want. . . . . . . .To tell u fact i'm not a dog trainer or something but I know how they react on ur action because I have spent a hell lot me time with them. And one more thing NEVER BEAT THEM OK?

Dog Health Questions: Is my dog trained well enough?

I trained my 9 month old pup the basic training. Sit, stay, come, and down. Is that enough? Did i do good? And if not what else. Fyi i did it all myself

How to use the Remote Dog Training Collar

Recommended Answer:
It sounds like you've got the basics under control. Here are a list of things that well trained should be like:
Doesn't jump up on people
Non-aggressive
Comes when called
Toilet trained
No aggression near food (every dinner time, come to your pup's bowl and kneel down putting a treat in his bowl)
Socialization to dogs, animals, cars, people etc.
Good Luck!

Dog Training - How to Potty Train Your Dog & End Your Frustration - It is Easier Than You Think

  • It depends on how obedient it is to those commands. They can learn those commands a lot younger. The key is having them do them quickly whenever you tell them to.

No it's not enough. Adding more will keep the dog stimulated and build its confidence. Go into tricks or sports commands.
Others already gave you good basic commands like drop it, leave it and sit away from you (rather than coming to you to sit), these are ones you should teach that could save its life.

  • That sounds good to me? This is sort of a strange question. I suppose that you've got the basic things down, as long as you've made sure that you're dog really knows them well. I mean other than that, just training your dog behavioral things like not jumping on people/furniture if you don't prefer it, and not to eat food off of the counter, etc. etc. Normal obedience things. Other than that, I think you're good? xD

  • you should take him to puppy training class. I take my puppy to a basic puppy training class at PetSmart! You could also go to a better place, but PetSmart worked for us! So far, he has learned sit, come, and leave it and it has been 2 weeks. I see you haven't taught your puppy leave it. Leave it is one of the most important basic ones. Say, you drop a bottle of Tylenol and it spills all over the floor. If your puppy is trained you can shout LEAVE IT and your puppy will. It is very simple trick to learn, but it is hard to explain. Good luck! ♪♫
    p.s- It's did I do well

  • well we dont know exactly how good because we cant see your dog. but if he knows the basics and knows them really well, then you can start teaching him new tricks that can be more fun. another trick you might consider teaching him is "heel"(walking by your side) so that when you take him on a walk, he's not the leader, you are.

    a list of fun tricks:
    roll over
    jump
    sit up
    get your tail
teach him the names of his toys..tell him to go find his __________ (fill in the blank with a toy)
    drop it
    leave it
    take it
    boundary train it (if needed)

the most important of these are drop it, leave it, take it, & heel

  • No that is not enough. You should show him the LEAVE IT command. So, when you have to get out of the room and you leave your food or something you say LEAVE IT and he will know to leave it. You can also show him rollover, fetch, heel, speak, 360, and weave. Weave is when he weaves through your legs while you are walking.

    Hope I helped :D

  • Well, I haven't seen your dog so I can't say if you "did good". I taught my dog paw (good for wiping mud off), back (lay on back, good or cleaning), stretch (good before walks), potty train, crate train and I'd also teach your dog fetch for days you don't want to walk :)

  • Well make sure he's potty trained lol and I'd try and test him in different situations and take him on walks. See how he performs. If he's hard to control and doesn't listen, he needs more discipline. However, it sounds like you're doing a great job so far. Hope I helped! :)

  • Right. If you think you have done well now go to your local club and take it further. Go for your Good Citizen Bronze, Silver and Gold. Great sense of achievement there.http://tedthedogbooks.com

  • It's best to take your dog to a formal obedience class...Not so much for the training, but for the socialization....It's a need for a good dog.. :-)

  • Just depends on what you think is well trained! Try teaching him spin. My dog learned that pretty easily and he is a slow learner! Its a fun trick.

  • Id teach him quiet and leave it. Off if that isn't what you meant by down, and if it was then lie down.

  • you did it yourself? WOW amazing. so did everyone else with their dogs!. and no that is not enough.
you should teach your pup more.

Dog Training Devices - How Using One Can Help Correct Stubborn Dog Training Problems

Recommended Answer:
Yes, your puppy is bored. JRT's need at least two hours of vigorous exercise a day, NOT in their own yard, but out with you having fun. Without enough exercise, your problems will get worse and not better. Doggie daycare would definitely help with this, if you cannot exercise him enough. Since the lab probably doesn't want to play, your pup amuses himself by bouncing on him. He steals the toys because he can. Terriers dig because that's what they do. These dogs were bred to hunt rodents, and that often meant digging to get to them. It's not something you can stop. With some dogs, you can redirect this by giving them a sandbox, so they have somewhere they are allowed to dig. You build a nice, deep sandbox, and introduce your dog to it by burying treats and toys and helping him start to dig them up. You have to "reload" the box daily, or he will get bored and dig elsewhere.
If you choose to rehome this dog, do it while he's a puppy and others still have a chance of retraining him.

Dog Training Collar Aka Shock Collar Buyers' Guide

  • First- Jack Russels are high energy - you need to give him a job or give him something to occupy himself with.

If your dogs are unaltered :
(and even if they arent - its just higher with intact ones)
then the JR is doing those things to show that he's the boss.
Whenever JR goes to bother the other dog - get his attention - give him something else to focus on - like a treat or another toy or attention.

the jumping on him thing- thats play behavoir - your Lab is older but your JR is young and wants to play. Interact with him more, he will learn to play with people rather than your old man.

  • Probably because he needs a lot of exercise and some mental stimulation as for the other dog part he is being dominant look up how much exersize your dog should be getting (which is a lot because he is a terrier) and look up games that will stimulate his brain so that he wont get bored and dig holes. You have to be the dominant on not your dog and right now he is .

  • Your dog (JRT) is probably showing some dominance over your lab and wants to be the pack leader. Make sure he's trained well. Also, here's a link to understand the general behavior of dogs and another link on how to control your dog on trying to be the pack leader. hope these help!

Dog Health Questions: Can i have my dog trained to be a service dog in Texas?

I am disabled and i am interested in getting a service dog to help me. Everything that i have read about service dogs says that you cant adopt one if you already have dogs. So I'm wondering if i can have one of the dogs i already own trained to be a service dog? If so where do you take them to be trained. What requirements are there? Any more information on this would be so helpful! It is NOT an option for me to get rid of my other dogs

The Basic Commands of Dog Training

    Recommended Answer:
That's not true. Some programs won't place service dogs in homes that already have pet dogs, but some will. You just keep looking until you find a program that matches your needs.
    http://www.servicedogcentral.org/content…

Hiring a private trainer to train a dog to that level will be very costly, most likely over $10,000. And when starting out with a pet dog there is little chance the dog will have all of the qualities necessary to complete training and actually become a service dog. Even among dogs specifically bred to have the ideal genetics for becoming a service dog and raised from birth by experts in the field, only 7 out of 8 succeed in completing the process. Out of the general dog population it is more like one dog in a hundred. Over three quarters wash out on health issues alone because an issue that wouldn't be a significant problem for a pet is exacerbated by the work of a service dog.

I think there is still an owner-trainer program in Texas, so you should look into that. They should be on one of those lists in the article I linked above. You take your own dog and they attempt to train you to train it yourself. It's less expensive than going through a private trainer yet they'd also be able to evaluate your dog for you and tell you what chance you have succeeding with him before you start.

But if I were you, I'd check out a few more programs before deciding none will work.

    --- edited to add ---

The Seeing Eye does permit pet dogs on a case-by-case basis, but most guide dog schools do not. There's not much point in placing a trained dog in a household where that dog's training cannot be maintained. It's not like they are VCRs that can be programed and left. Other dogs can teach the service dog bad habits, or can become jealous of the time spent with the service dog. So it depends on the dogs already in the household and has to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

The Kinds of Dog Training Collars

    • Each program has their own requirements. Not all service dog programs will not allow you to have a pet dog in your home. I have a friend with a guide dog from a school in NY who has several other pet dogs and even another service dog (medical alert dog for disabling diabetes, and yes she works both at the same dog as the alert dog (Doxie) doesn't guide and the guide dog can't alert).

Is it possible to train your own dog, maybe. It is completely legally, but whether or not you would be successful would depend on your dog's temperament. You would most likely need to hire a professional trainer to both evaluate your dog and assist in the training, and even then there is no guarantee that you will be successful.

    • I have friends who are blind and have seeing eye dogs. They were not allowed to own other dogs as part of the agreement to get a seeing eye dog. But, I have another friend who is wheelchair-bound and SHE got a service dog and already had another dog at home.

I think different corporations have different rules.

As far as getting one of your dos you already have trained....I'm not sure. I'm sure if you had one with the personality for it, there would be someone out there willing to put some time into it.

My experience has been that guide dogs for the blind are generally raised from birth to do so, but other service dogs can come from different walks of life. I have seen shelter pups become service dogs as well as labs/goldens raised from pups.

ETA: This company will consider homes with other dogs- http://myservicedog.com/

This website is dedicated to all things about Texas service dogs- http://ags.tamu.edu/

This website has a whole list of Service Dog Trainers: http://wolfpacks.com/products/servicedog…

THis website has resources for finding a service dog or trainer: http://servicedogcentral.org/content/nod…

      Hope that helps.

    • you can so get a service dog if you have other dogs.
I know of people with service dogs.. they also have dogs that are just pets.

You "can" get your own dog trained.. but the odds of any of your dogs having the proper temperment or drive for service dog work is slim to none. Not just any dog can be trained to be a service dog.

    • If you already have a full grown dog, there are slim chances you can train him to be a service dog. I mean it definitely is possible but it's going to be hard. If you wanted a service dog you would most likely have to buy a new one. They are raised literally from birth as service dogs. They are raised very carefully so nothing goes wrong.

      http://www.servicedogs.org/

      Good luck!

    • I would look this up in your area.I'm sure you could train one of your already owned dogs if they have the personality for it. Otherwise you'll have to get a dog that is already trained, doesn't mean you have to get rid of your dogs.

    • yes

Dog Health Questions: Dog Training Tips...?

I have a 1 yr old Boxer/Lab mix who is a royal pain!! We live in an apartment complex, and our neighbors also have dogs. Whenever we go outside for "Piddle" time, and another dog or person is simply walking by, my dog goes ballistic! He knows his basic commands, but will NOT obey them during this time. I've tried working with treats, toys and bones...Nothing works. We bought a spiked training collar that pinches him when he barks, pulls... but that does not work either. Tonight, was the last straw! I ended up on my butt in the snow, trying to hold onto him (While he wanted to bark senselessly at a neighbor walking w/ groceries).

We've tried 3 diff. shock coll

    Best Dog Training Books

    Recommended Answer:
Was the pinch on correctly? Did you give a hard enough correction? Some owners are afraid to properly use the pinch collar in fear of hurting their dog. It should be a snug fit right under the dogs jaw and behind the ears and stay there without slipping down the dogs neck. Corrections should be enough to get the dogs attention back to you, but not enough to hurt him. Timing is also everything when it comes to giving the correction, look for signs like hackles raising or his attention is drawn to something before he goes crazy. You have to watch for it because it may be something as simple as a glance in the direction which should be diverted.

Is he getting enough exercise too? Boxers and Labs have a lot of energy and if he isn't properly exercised it leads to many behavioural issues.

You have to show him you're the boss if you don't react to another person or dog or anything, he shouldn't either. It all starts at home, you walk through doorways first. You go up/down the stairs first and you eat first. Don't just give him his food, make him sit and wait and he shouldn't eat until you say ok. If you can't manage to take the alpha roll on your own find some help from a trainer.

Abused Dog Training - How to Train an Abused Dog

    • I would suggest getting a professional trainer....?

    • Boxers have a very bad reputation, they are hard to train, i suggest you contact a breeder or the kennel club for some advice and where you can take him for training. You will need to be firm but gentle as you don't want to break his spirit, always have treats with you and when he obeys a command give him one and really praise him. Don't use shock collars they are terrible

    • Your dog needs to be properly socialized. Shock collars will do more harm in a situation like this than good if you understand the behavioral makeup of the animal. It's irresponsible to train via computer, do yourself a favor and call in a professional, even if only to meet once and get some clear direction from someone who's able to witness the behavior and instruct you properly how to handle your dog and his individual needs.

    • It is not only the training aid you use, it is how you use it. especially the timing of the corrections. Get some help from a trainer to help you learn how to correct him.

    • I agree with the last 2 posters on the pinch or prong collar, properly used it is a life saver.
the most important of all is the timing a correct jerk and release should do it, I just trained a lab who would also go ballistic on her owner and pull her every where causing her to suffer from shoulder pain,
after 6 weeks of training the dog no longer pulls and doesn't go ballistic with other dogs or people.

    • KiKeenon is right. If the prong collar is used correctly it will work. It must be put on high on the neck, right behind the ears, not down around the throat. Used incorrectly you can damage the vocal cords.
Please find a good trainer (not Petco) that is probably in the local kennel club. Most groomers or vets can direct you to a kennel club contact.
That's a difficult combination of dog breeds to work with by yourself. Please get help.

Dog Health Questions: Dog training facilities in Tulsa, OK... been to any that you would recommend?

I adopted a very sweet dog from the shelter a few weeks ago and would like to take her to a knowledgeable training facility for basic obedience. She already knows sit, down, and a few other things, but she needs a lot of work on her recall and off-leash obedience. I've been looking into the Tulsa Dog Training Club, and will most likely take her there (when they actually have an opening), but I did find something called the Companion Dog School of Tulsa online today and wanted to know if anyone has been there. I refuse to go to PetSmart or places like that because they don't know what they're doing... so any recommendations would be great! Thanks!

You can buy a few books on dog training. They usually start out with basic obedience & will take you into more advanced training. But go through a few books before you buy to see if the training method suits you. There are lots of trainers out there that have books out but each one has a slightly different way of going about doing things. You will get the same result but the way you go about it differs.

There are sites on the internet that can help, too. I have included a few.

Dog Health Questions: Help dog training. How to train a puppy?

Okay today I buy a dog a male maltese puppy of 2 & 1/2 months old and I wonder how to train him because I don't want him to be peeing and pooping inside my house. he didn't yet thank God so any help will be appreciate.

      The Importance of Dog Training

      Recommended Answer:
I would suggest getting a crate, it makes housetraining SO much easier.

Make sure you take your puppy out about every 2 hours at least. Also after he eats, drinks, or naps take him out for a bit. When he goes outside praise him and give him a treat and be REALLY excited to show him it's the right thing. When he goes inside just say NO (but only if you caught him in the act). Never rub his nose in it or hit/tap him, puppies don't know any better and this doesn't help.

When you go out keep him in his crate (dogs wont go in there crate unless you leave them in there to long) and when you get home immediatly take him outside. At night before you go to bed let him go outside and then after he goes put him in his crate and in the morning get up and let him out again. Also don't let him drink/eat anymore about an hour/half our befor you go to bed so he isn't full and won't have to go.

      Good luck!

Dog Training DVD Review - It's PAWsible!

      • Fill a can with small pebbles or coins. If you catch your puppy in the act of peeing or pooping inside, shake the can to startle him into stopping, then take him outside to finish and to teach him that that's where he should be doing it.
Praise him when he goes outside (try giving him a small treat each time), and ignore him when he goes inside. Make sure you take him outside often because puppies can have trouble holding it in. Try to figure out what signs and body language your puppy shows when he has to pee or poop and take him out when you see them.
There will be a few accidents. Just be patient. There is a product called Nature's Miracle that is good for cleaning up messes left by pets.

      • Heres my advice.....because your pup is still very young,he will have accidents. When I have a new pup I block off the kitchen so he can't wander the house. Then I make him a bed(in a crate)and his water & food area, and newspaper down for peeing etc.I do this because giving free rein to a pup in a big house is too much for them. They can't find were the papers are when needed.I'm not saying don't take him elsewhere in the house, just not without supervision.Once your pup is peeing on his papers, its time for him to learn to pee like a big dog...lol.It helps that it is summer and doors can be left open. You have to watch your dog closely. They will sniff around, perhaps circle around while they are looking for just the right spot for a pee.You need to take them outside, perferably out the kitchen door. When he pees outside you praise him and give him a treat. It will take a little while for him to catch on,be patient!Never rub their noses in it,or hit them!Remember he's just a wee babe,he'll figure it out!!

      • every time he does his Business in the wrong place tell him NO show him ( like point at it and say NO) and take him to the place hes suppose to do his business
(If you want him inside buy those square pads i don't what there called)

      • take him outside every single time he tries to pee or poop

Dog Health Questions: Positive dog training, anyone?

I've been researching the Shiba Inu for a couple of months now and found a breeder within 200 miles that is very respectable. Most the sites say the same thing, independent, smart, good watch dog, and loyal. I have to train the dog with positive dog training methods because they don't take to slapping on the nose. I would research this too, but all the sites want money for a program and others make no sense. Now I was wondering if anyone knows of good positive dog training methods?

      Please help and thank you.

      Hi,

Here are a lot of trainings for your dog that will give you a step-by-step tips without money. These are indeed positive because training is the best investment you can make in your relationship with your dog. Check them out:

Online Dog Training - Train Your Dog Using Your Computer - Seriously!

      • The best thing you can do is take the puppy to puppy kindergarten followed by basic obedience classes. Nothing is free, but the cost of the classes (usually about $100 for 8 weeks) is well worth it. This is especially true with stubborn, independent dogs like Shiba Inus. These classes will teach you how to train your dog. And if you are unfamiliar with positive training, this is the best option.

On the cheap you can go to the library and check out some books on positive dog training and dog behavior. It is good to start before you bring the dog home.

are you a qualified dog behaviorist?? or a qualified obedience instructor?? have you earned your UD? i am confused by this question

      Dog Training Tools and Advice

      • I am also confused.
I am a trainer and behavior consultant.. I answer questions, not ask them..

No offense, but I hope your class is better than your grammar.

      • Why are you asking questions that you should be answering. If you truly have the credentials to be teaching anyone anything you would have these answers, right? And what could be taught in one 45 minute class? Especially when you need to ask what to do to fill up 45 minutes.

      • I certainly wouldn't take a class from you! I'm not a dog trainer but I have taken enough classes to know what I could and couldn't do in a 45 min class if I did have the credentials to facilitate one!

      • Well - we all have to start somewhere -
        http://www.karenpryor.com

      • Shouldn't you already know this stuff before you teach?

I hope that you are not charging anything and that it is for kids. Trainers should be qualified to teach, and if you were qualified you wouldn't be asking on here.

Dog Health Questions: Thinking about getting into dog training. Where to start?

I have trained numerous dogs in the past mostly for hunt tests. These were mostly my own dogs. Now I am thinking about doing it "professionally". I have a good job that I do not want to five up. But I would like to try dog training on the side. Where should I start? Classes, books, etc. Any other advice? I am in VT. thanks.

      Books:
Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson is the best book out there. Anything by Patricia McConnell, Karen Pryor and Ian Dunbar is also great, but start with Culture Clash. After that, you should go on to read grad thesis and scientific journals, (although sometimes you have to pay and subscribe to get this stuff for a nominal fee.)

You can attract clients with your own website, or posting on Craigs List, the problem is keeping them. You want turn over rate and word of mouth, since that is mostly where you make your money. To ensure this happens, you should be kept up to date on the latest Dog Training science so you always give the best advice possible. I constantly check the above Dog Trainer's websites for new info, look up scientific studies and go to reputable sources like the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior, The American College of Veterinary Behaviorists, and The Society of Veterinary Behavior Technicians just to name a few when I'm trying to update on dog behavior and such.

There are courses, schools and the like of course, but the only one that really stands out for me is the Dog Training Academy in San Francisco. There are many courses out there and schools that can teach the same thing, but if you're gonna do it, might as well be with a super reputable one that will look good on a resume. Many of these courses cost upwards of $4,000 and you always run the risk of going with a quack who will teach you many incorrect things. This is why study by self initiative is so important.

Science is important. As Dog Trainers we are basically teaching people how to communicate with their dog what they want and don't want, and unless we understand the psychology of dogs, we inevitably come short on giving out good advice. The idea that dogs are pack animals is now outdated, so much scientific study has come up about how dogs have branched out from wolves and yet people, including some dog trainers still dish out the "dogs are just like wolves" mantra, and they aren't. If you don't keep up with the science you won't know this stuff.

Here's the most recent study I've looked at
      http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story…
It was done by a scholar and researcher of dog behavior, biology and cognition who went to Oxford. This is the stuff you should listen to, not just some TV Dog Trainer who spouts off stuff that has no science of proof to back it up. So don't forget to study, and remember that science is where its at.

Now here's an easy way to get into Dog Training and be paid for it. Many PETCOs and Petsmarts will pay for you to get trained. Apply at a local PETCO that doesn't have a Dog Trainer and tell them you've had experience, they will put you through their training which was developed by Karen Pryor herself and you'll even get paid for it. One of the Dog Trainers I work with started there and she's done quite well for herself.

You can also work for free under an apprenticeship at your local dog training school for experience, perhaps doing odd jobs for them in exchange. They may even hire you once they feel you're ready.

Good luck! Let me know if I can be of any further assistance! The most important thing to remember is: You must love dogs! = )

Pick the Best Dog Training Collar to Train Your Big Dog to Walk

      • Hands on with a seasoned, professional. Avoid "franchise and chain" trainers. FInd the "real McCoy" and learn from him.

      • Do you want to get into training hunting dogs professionally, or another type of training (or all kinds in general)?

For hunting, I would suggest that you get yourself a pup or two, train it (or them) for hunting and then sell the pups, probably through one of the hunting dog newsletters or magazines. Then get another and do it again. Word will get around if you're a good hunting dog trainer. You could try writing short articles for the hunting publications, and run a small ad in some of them. It's a good way to start out.
