Dog Health Questions: My current dog doesn't behave, I want a new dog?

I have seen a rash of questions lately declaring that the poster's current dog is untrained, unhousebroken, human aggressive, dog aggressive, doesn't listen, you name the problem. But they are determined to get a new dog and they think the new one is going to be perfect.

What makes them think that the new dog is going to turn out any better? Don't they understand that their current dog is that way because of them? That if they don't have time to train or retrain the current dog, then they don't have time for the new one? If their training methods or lack of training methods created the monster they have now, why do they think it is going to be different with the new dog?

I don't understand this concept. I was always taught that when you have the current dog trained and under control, and you have extra time and money for a new one, only then to you consider getting another one. Not until then. Am I the one insane?

I have seen a rash of those questions on here lately.

A lot of times people say they want to get their current dog a companion and then go on to state what an ill behaved dog they already have. As if the new dog will have some magic effect on the first one. They refuse to take responsibility that its their fault the first dog is such a mess.

Also you have to remember that a lot of these people think that spaying/neutering equals instant training. Sterilization is the answer to every problem a dog has in their mind.

I think it is Spring Break for a lot of kids this week and we are getting a lot of kid questions.

Only now as I start Utility training with the two dogs I have am I contemplating on adding a new dog to the fold. I am just torn between getting another Collie or an American Eskimo (I love my too tall Pomeranian, I thought this was the only way to get a taller Spitz from a reputable breeder).

ADD: I would kidnap all Diva babies.
As an elite level performance dog she is the kind of dog that should be bred!!!!!
Maybe we could clone her?

Dog Training Basics - Avoid These Five Common Mistakes

  • LOL Don't you know nuttin', the new dog will come already trained from it's momma and it will train the old one.

  • well i'm agreeing with you on this one. to me there are just some un-trainable dogs like humans.
but a lot of the time its lazy owners.
like even though i'm 14 i've had 5 dogs in my life.
    all rottweilers.
not so long ago we got given a large male rottweiler that the owner said just didn't behave so he was getting a new dog.
we managed to train the dog and i've not had any bother from him.
so i do winder about this new dog.
i think its insane if you cant train one dog do not get another.
it most chances isn't the dog but the way you train and interact with it.
be lazy with them you wont get anything from the dog.
work hard and get a loving family dog.

  • LOL@ Rotten Rotts!

They're lazy, plain and simple. They don't want to bother training their dog, because it isn't as easy as just getting rid of it.

No, your not insane. People are insane for thinking that dogs are disposable, they don't train themselves.......

  • The people who want to get another dog when their dog is unruly are idiots and only manage to mess up yet another dog's life.

  • Sigh --- nearly every other question is about a puppy ..... and everytime I wonder how long that puppy will stay in its home ......... huge sigh.

I am sick and tired of seeing people having pups on here that haven't the experience themselves to nurture the pups through let alone place the puppies into suitable homes.

I guess that brings it full circle round to ........ well this one doesn't behave so we'll go onto the next. I haven't answered many this afternoon. I didn't dare as I might have been too rude.

  • I had to laugh at this one. I have three dogs of my own, all of whom I have taken a lot of time to train properly so that they are well-behaved. They all show proper respect on a leash, are not aggressive in any manner, and have basic obedience.

I don't think I appreciated them until I started dogsitting my father's dog this week. For those people who think that a good dog is going to make the bad dog behave they are sorely mistaken. It is far more likely that the good dogs just pick up the naughty dogs behavior. I am here all day long and with all of the dogs. I can catch the beginnings of bad behavior and correct it immediately, but how many people can actually do that? Even then, it is exhausting! :) I'm glad I am only dogsitting!

You aren't insane, you are completely correct. If people have time and money and are committed to actually training their dog, then by all means go get a second.

Take a deep breath, don't let them get to you. Some people are just not gifted with common sense.

  • Nope, not insane. I agree with what you are saying to the fullest.

An idiot is too big of an idiot to think along those lines.

  • I hate when this happens to puppies. Someone doesn't properly train their puppy, and once the pup is 6mos-1 year, they go, "It's not cute anymore! and it's not well-behaved! Time to get a new puppy!" then the "old" dog has trouble finding a home because he's not a cute little puppy anymore AND he's not trained. I agree with you, it's awful. And I've been seeing a lot of ones on here about adding an animal to the household. Idk if you saw it, but one of them had a 7 year old GSD that was extremely dog aggressive, but they were getting another puppy. WTF? Deal with dog #1 before even considering a dog #2!

  • Yeah but see if people did more research before getting a dog, they could pick a breed or mix that matched their personality/lifestyle better. I do think the dog is a factor..that's why I wish people thought it out more instead of got the cute dog in the petstore or the dog they think they want based on popularity or appearance. Like labs, they can be easy to train but if you don't give a lab enough exercise forget it.

For example I got a border collie mix and when I tell people how much time we spend doing activities each day they say something like "can't you just walk him for 10 minutes like other people do with their dogs and they're fine" but no I couldn't and anyone who has a border collie can't just do that either.

"Sigh --- nearly every other question is about a puppy ..... and everytime I wonder how long that puppy will stay in its home ......... huge sigh."
LORRAINE my thoughts exactly. But don't give up, you all who take the time to answer questions are helping many out there even if the question is a troll someone may be searching google for help and find your answer.

There's a pet section in my newspaper and always right next to the ads with pictures for puppymill puppies (you know- the teacups and designer puppy) there are a couple ads and pictures of shelter and rescue dogs needing homes. Today there was a 3 year old lab mix with it written that the owners surrendered him because he was fighting with their other dog. And there was a 5 year old jack russell terrier who was surrendered because the owners didn't "have enough time for her" and she's sweet with children and other dogs. How can people just let go of a life that was with them for years, no sense of commitment or responsibility, that's the way this culture is to get what you want when you want it selfish or not.

  • Because the new dog will come with a written guarantee to be housebroken, a terrific guard dog, and fully obedience trained all for the price of the paper it is written on....LOL

Yep, get rid of the poor dog you did not take time to train and love properly, buy another one, but this time, I hope you get a really huge dog, so it can bite you in the rear, and then hopefully you will never own another dog again.

This is why there are so many poor babies in the Shelters.......grow up people....

If you can't train your dog, what makes you think, you can buy one and have it already the perfect dogs, like People, Dogs are not perfect, but I would say that Dogs are so much more trustworthy and perfect than a human yep they are.....

Dog Health Questions: Is a good watch/guard dog an................?

Australian Cattle Dog? My family is thinking actually almost sure we're going to get one soon, but are they good guard/watch dogs? Because we want a strong. powerful dog that will guard us in any situation, and will alarm us when someone is on our property or coming to our door. I want this dog to be fearless. If we do end up getting one, should we put it in guard dog or attack dog training???? Please do not suggest other breeds to me, we have made up our mind. Thanks

    Dog Training - Basics

    Recommended Answer:
Yes they are very good watch and guard dogs. They're very protective over their family. I have one and she barks and warns us whenever somebody pulls into the drive way. She listens very good and never had any problems with her biting anyone, but she will if told to. She's very smart and learns quickly. She bites the back of everyone's heels but thats why they call them "Blue/Red Healers". Over all they make really good watch dogs.

I do not recomend putting it into training, spend time with it and it's instincts will kick in and will protect your family naturally.

Dog Obedience Schools: 4 Tips For Choosing The Right Dog Training Schools

    • You need to speak to your breeder to ask if he line they breed is for protection? If so what tests of stability and protection have they done on the parents grand parents etc.
No attack training is for bad trainers/owners.
You must obtain a HIGH level of obedience and socialization on the dog for a protection club to consider you for future protection work.
However watch dog and natural protection abilities is not a given in breeds not created to guard. Vs herd or hunt or trial etc. Do your research im sure you will find a good breeder.
      Best of luck .

    • Well I'm glad you can't be swayed to another breed because I would hate the thought of a rottie in your hands.

Dogs are not even considered going for guard / attack training until over one year old, and then they must have a very sound temperament to do the job well.

If you bring a dog up thinking it can protect you instead of you protecting it then it is the leader and will choose its attack times.

You have to bring a dog up with you as total leader and therefore you are in charge of what it does and when.

Anybody that does otherwise just has a loose canon on their hands

    • yes they are very protective breeds (this can be a problem though because they may try to attack friends) and if you get one put it into guard dog training. Attack dogs will just attack and not warn you at all, which will put you into a big legal mess if someone gets bitten and if (depending on where you live) they bite someone three times they must be put down. Also a good guard dog is one that will bark, a bad one is one that bites.

      bottom line yes

    • I think they are good watch dogs naturally. They are very intelligent, naturally cautious towards strangers, and protective of their family. I haven't heard of them being trained as guard or attack dogs, I'm not sure if they have the right temperament for that. But if you decide to give it a try then get it trained as a guard dog.

    • No, and ACD is not right for you. They were bred to work, and unless you can find a reputable sheepdog trainer, and get the dog on livestock, when it's old enough, find another breed. Go to you local animal shelter/rescue and adopt a homeless dog.

    • YES!!! they are excellent guard dogs, and can protect people in any situation. you might want to put it into guard dog training, but it depends on here you get it from.

Dog Health Questions: What is the best electronic dog training collar?

My Dog has a strong prey drive. We have a ton of wild turkeys and he needs to chase them. I want to stop that behavior before he runs into the street or runs after something he can't handle. He is an Australian Cattle dog about 50 lbs. Also do you know if they make collars that if the dog gets too far away from the owner the collar beeps? I want to make sure my dog knows he is not supposed to get more than 20 yards away from me. Will it sense the distance and set off an alarm so the dog knows to come back?

    Professional Dog Training Methods Revealed

    Recommended Answer:
The best brand of e-collar in my opinion are Dogtra. No they don't to my knowledge make the type of collar you are describing. They rely on you to be watching the dog and trigger the collar. If you can't have your eyes on the dog at all times he should be on a leash. Some dogs with very high prey drive will ignore the correction from an e-collar, for them the reward to the chase is worth the correction so make sure you work with your dog in a secure area to ensure the correction will stop him and what level of correction is required to stop him before working with him in an area where if you find out it doesn't work it could cost your dog his life.

Secrets to German Shepherd Dog Training

    • The best one is the one used by someone knowledgable in their use and application.

Tri-Tronics makes the best e collars in my opinion.

This one works up to a mile

      http://www.tritronics.com/pro-500-g3-exp…

    • how about training the dog instead of cheap fixes that don't always work?

    • A lot of herding breeds (or breeds with a high prey drive) will not respond to e-collars as they're so focused on the job at hand (herding or hunting.) Your best bet would be to consult with a professional who has EXPERIENCE with this tool (both in introduction and weaning off of it) as it can easily be abused and over used.

I have not heard of one that can judge distance, namely because it's hard for a DOG to judge distance. The best option for keeping the dog near you (other than using a long leash) would be to teach the dog to automatically look back to you for instruction - it isn't an easy behavior to teach, hence why i suggest a professional. Maybe someone with bird dog (hunting dog) experience.

Keeping your dog occupied and exercised will also help with herding behaviors - if the dog has nothing to do to stimulate that need to work, of course it will go after anything that moves.

    It depends..

You could attend group training classes in your area.

You can get a trainer to come to your house and work with you and your dog.

You can get dog training books which you can borrow from a library, buy at a bookstore or buy online ebooks and courses.

I personally have been to classes but while that was good a book that you can refer to at different times works best for me.

Here is a popular course that has lots of good testimonies.

Dog Health Questions: Im gonna take my puppy to dog training classes ?

im gonna take my puppy to dog training classes i was wonder how does that work like what do they do like the activities

3 Secrets to Dog Training - Immediate Results

      Recommended Answer:
Good for you! They do all kinds of things, and all classes are a little different.

Puppy classes often focus on very basic commands. Sit, down, stand, and coming when called. Recall is the main thing, and it's mixed in with socialization, and orientation to new and strange objects.

The class I took with Sophie worked on proper ways to treat and reward, loose leash, sitting, downing, and coming when called. It was all intermixed with fun little play sessions. So the dogs would have to focus, and learn, then they could romp, then we'd "recall" out of the play session, and learn, then play. It was a fabulous class. They introduced our dogs to wheelchairs, canes, crutches, hats, and new people and sights and sounds. It's an excellent beginning, and an amazing bonding experience. Not to mention a blast!

      Police Dog Training

      • they probably do exercises like make your dog sit, stay, and come. who knows? they might even teach the dog a few tricks

      • Puppy socialization, they pretty much teach you basic commands , some obedience, you learn about nutrition, grooming, exercise etc.. Your puppy also gets to meet other puppies.. some groups meet on weekends for play dates.. It depends on what your course has to offer, you will find out when you go.

      • They will train you how to train your dog. It is up to you to be consistant with the training after you leave the classes.
        Basic puppy classes will teach
        Sit
        Stay
        Down
        Come
        Walking properly on a leash

      • When I took my dog. They gave me a "clicker". What that does is, if your dog runs away or something, they train your dog to respond to it.

They also try and help your do sit and roll over on command. :]

        HOPE I HELPED :]

      • Hi... the ones where I have taken my puppy to are a lot of fun! Usually you gather in a large room and the teacher will go over everything with you. They will teach you basic commands first, such as sit, stay, down, heel, etc. It's great for socializing your puppy too . I'm sure he/she will love it !

      • In the training classes i go to it is all about how to control ur dog in road safety, ( basically how to train ur dog sit, down , stay and basic and advanced recall and stays.) but loads of clubs are different and you will help u with any antisocial behaviour ur dog has :)
        Hope that helped :)

      • I am also confused.
I am a trainer and behavior consultant.. I answer questions, not ask them..

No offense, but I hope your class is better than your grammar.

      • Why are you asking questions that you should be answering. If you truly have the credentials to be teaching anyone anything you would have these answers, right? And what could be taught in one 45 minute class? Especially when you need to ask what to do to fill up 45 minutes.

      • I certainly wouldn't take a class from you! I'm not a dog trainer but I have taken enough classes to know what I could and couldn't do in a 45 min class if I did have the credentials to facilitate one!

Dog Training With a Halti or General Leader Collar

      • I liked "Before and After Getting Your Puppy" by Dr. Ian Dunbar

It was really easy to read, had visuals, and TONS of very useful training and first time dog owner information. If you're getting a specific breed you might want to look into that as well. Some breeds require special care or issues that you should at least be aware of if nothing else. For example, I have a mini dachshund, and I got Ian Dunbar's book (reference from a friend who used it) and Dachshunds for Dummies. :)

      • I don't think you need a book for that honey. It is very simple:

        1. Always walk beside or in front of the dog
        2. Enter rooms before the dog
        3. Exercise daily
        4. Don't let it jump on you without asking it to
        5. Don't let it bark without permission
        6. Read an article about potty training

Its not hard it just takes dedication and you will have a fine dog. I trained mine and he is excellent. Its important that the dog sees you as a leader because dogs think in terms of dominance. An out of control dog thinks that he is the leader.
