Dog Health Questions: Dog training question?

now i know keep your dog on a leash and have a fenced yard....but realisticly i would like to be able to teach my dog to stay by me when we are outside....if your just going to tell me to keep her on a leash dont wast your time....i know people have dogs that they take with them and they stay with them....i would like anyone who has done this to give me some insite as to how they've done it...

obviousely she will not be alone outside and im not going to run around with her off the leash for long periods if i can't watch he....

• If you aren't in a fenced area, it's not a good idea.. You never know what might come up or come along, and sometimes things are just way too tempting, and worth the risk of trouble.. I wouldn't do it.. I don't trust others, and you never know what might happen...


• Whether you can teach your dog to stay with you off-leash has a lot to do with the dog, and how much time you spend training it. The first thing you would have to do, is to train the dog to walk with you on the leash. Walk it every day. Teach the dog that if it strays too far forward from you, it will feel a tug, that will bring it back to you. Walk the dog, then after a little bit ask it to sit. When you ask it to sit, gently pull up on the leash and use your other hand to push the butt down. Praise it for sitting. Then resume walking, saying, "Heel". Sometimes having treats in your pocket helps, and you can offer a treat occassionally, but praise should be the primary reinforcement. When you are in your yard, or another area, put a long rope on your dog, perhaps 10 or 12 feet long. This way if your dog strays too far, you can simply step on the rope, and the dog cannot go any further. This teaches the dog that it cannot and should not wander too far from you. After awhile the dog will learn how far it can go, and to return to you. Teach it to come, by using a six foot leash. Make your dog sit and stay. Then walk about 5 or 6 feet away, wait and then stoop down a little and say, "Come". Praise your dog profusely, and make it sit, right away. Always keep the treats in your pocket at first, because if your dog knows it can get a treat when it comes to you, it will find that a very pleasurable thing. If your dog does something wrong and you call it to come to you, you must not scold it, as it will associate coming to you upon command, with negative discipline, but the treats in your pocket will always be a good reinforcement, and it must always be praised for coming to you on your command: "Good dog, come".


• Depending on your dogs dominance level she may be tryying lead you around. A good obedient dog will follow you were ever you go because you control the food time, play time, and sleep time. First fix the dominance, then if the dog is "sniffing" its way away from you try teathering the dog to your waist. Take a tie out cord wrap it around your waist and then attach the dog with collar to the end of it. The dog will eventually figure out whereever you go he/she has too also. This will establish you as the leader of the pack and help with any dominance issues. Good Luck

Dog Health Questions: Why does my dog growl and snarl when off lead?

I have a 1yr 3month German shepherd cross husky dog (there could be some Rottweiler in there too). I have had him 6months. I got him from a dog rescue home. They have no history of his past all they knew is he has been brought over from Ireland.

He is only let off the lead in our own garden and friends and families gardens (all are fair/good sized) we can't let him off in public as he never comes back when called! He also has issues with other dog and I keep him on lead for his and other dogs safety.

When I have let him off the lead in friends and families garden he runs around in circles in a frenzy. Growling and snarling running very quickly ... no barking... tail up. After a few minutes he slows down and I can get him on his lead. He is wont come when called in this frenzy! My family and friends are now nervous and he does look very intimidating when he does it.

Can anyone help me please? I already attend dog training. Thanks :-)

• He needs additional training, probably with a more experienced trainer. He needs socialization, and clearly has not been trained if he doesn't even come when called. That is pretty basic stuff. You need to go back to training classes until he learns to see you as the leader of his pack, comes when called, and gets along with other dogs.
  
  Then you need to continue to work on the training commands for the rest of his life. Dog training is not a one time thing. It is an on-going process.


• The dog is not properly socialized,you need to show him that you are the leader of the pack. He should not growl or snarl because you need to show him that you are the alpha.
  
  It just takes time & patience,good luck with the training.


• Your dog has dominance issues. Continue with the training and work on the dominance. You should be the dominant one in this relationship. Until you have the dominance under control, keep him on leash.


• Keep up with the training. Make sure 15-20 minutes a day hard training then practice with him throughout the day. He needs to understand that your are the alpha and not him. That is why he does what he wants and doesn't listen.


• keep up the training and he will get used to being off the lead in other peoples gardens. if it get bad like for instance he goes mad. as in the head. which wont happent ask the vet why he does it.


• He is a young dog that needs to let out some pent up energy. If he isn't threatening people or dogs while he is running around "in a frenzy", what are you worried about? Look up the term "frap" or "frapping" and see if this explains what your dog is doing.

Dog Health Questions: Dog training (setting boundaries)?

I have 2 dogs, both chihuahua toy fox terrier mix. I'm going to try to explain this the best way I can. I have a different color different carpets, the regular and one in front of the door about 5 x 5 ft. I'd like to set a boundary around that carpet. I'd like for them to only sit in front of the carpet when they need to use the bathroom, which I already accomplished. However, I'd like for the to stay off of that carpet at all times until I allow them outside. I've tried standing just on the edge of the carpet, putting my hand up (they know that means stay) and saying no which works when they're going outside but doesn't work all the time like I'd like it too. I'd also like them to stay out of the kitchen, but they have to go to the kitchen in order to get to my bedroom where there food is so I'd like them to know its ok just to pass through but not stay and scavenger. I try standing on the edge of the kitchen and putting my hand up and saying no, but that only works for a few seconds. So in a nut shell I'd like to set boundaries.

Also, my one pup loves to eat anything and everything off the ground/floor. Is there any way to stop her from doing that?

Hi, I am 13 and own an 11 month old Kelpie/ Cattle Dog/ Border Collie mix. She is a great dog. Very intelligent, easy to train and VERY active (which was expected of course). Whenever she jumps and bites, ignore her.

Don't say a word to her or even look at her. Just turn your back to her, cross your arms, and look up at the ceiling.

Once she calms down, go back to playing with her. If she bites or jumps again, ignore her again. Praise her whenever she's playing calmly.

She's learned that biting/jumping gets your attention. Even if the attention is negative, like yelling or scolding, it's still attention. You know how little kids will annoy you just to get a reaction out of you? It's the same with dogs. So you have to teach her that biting and jumping gets her absolutely nothing from you.

The most important thing is consistency. You and anyone else in your house, including guests who come over, have to ignore her every single time she bites or jumps up, or she won't get it. You can't let her get away with it even once.

Luckily most dogs learn pretty quickly. Just be patient with her.

I'm 15 and my grandmother agreed to house one of her friend's pitbul puppies. The dog(Stella) is almost an adult know, she has to be atleast 8-12 months old. • Yes, Pitbulls have a bad wrap...but I know many people who have the nicest dogs in the world and they are pitbulls! So as long as she is not animal or people aggressive I think it should be fairly(you will hit a few bumps in the road) easy! If I were you I would start working with her I somewhere fairly small(if possible a fenced in area...if you dont have somewhere that is fenced in get a longer leash) For the first coupld of weeks just start with basic commands such as come, heal, sit, down, leave it(food, something on the ground, ect) and front(the dog is suppose to break from whatever it is doing, come to you and sit right in front of you) are some basic ones my dog knows. This will take time and patience AND some really good treats which will keep your dogs interest(switch it up...cut up some turkey, hotdog, ect and change from time to time so the dog will keep coming back...but you dont always have to give a treat....praise will work just as well sometimes) AND you dont want the dog to ALWAYS associate treats just because once you take them away and not give them as often it could result negatively. Once you feel Stella is listening to you well enough to have her trust invite some friends along with you...to socialize Stella. You go and get Stella and put her on leash and have your friends in the yard with a treat...let the dog go up to your friends, have them pet her a little and then give her the treat...then to just let her do her thing.
  As for taking her on walks I would suggest getting a collar like this one(I am about a 120lbs and I have a Rottweiler mix whose around 70lbs...if I dont use this she will pull me over)

  I know many people dont like these collars but you have a very strong dog on your hands and you are quite young...so I would assume that she would be able to pull you very easily. How this collar works first of ONLY put this collar on when outside...and make sure it comes off when you get in the house(It can easily get caught on things) Just remember this is not as harch of a collar as you think it is...it is merly used for corrections...such as if your dog is pulling first give a warning such as "Stella, Heal" if she does not give a quick tug, then release...your dog will quickly learn that she needs to focus on you while on a walk as well!
  Also another suggestion...see if there are any dog training classes that are in your area in which you would be able to attend with your dog or atleast go an watch to see how they teach and what they recommend doing/trying!

I'm trying to train my dog Whiskey not to pee on the carpet. He is a three week old golden retriever. This problem has been non stop and my wife and i are at wits end. we have tried everything from yelling to rubbing his nose in it. What to Look For in the Best Dog Training Program

This is a method that I use on all my pups and older dogs with great results. This takes time, your dog is a baby and just like with human babies you have to be patient. Rubbing a dogs nose in it or smacking it are VERY outdated training methods and actually harm the relatonship with your dog.

Try this
I have never bothered with training pads. Take your dog into the garden every 30-60 min.
Use a designated toilet area in your garden and let your puppy walk and sniff around the area. Keep it clean to ensure that he will not go somewhere else in the garden that is cleaner. By selecting a specific area, you are helping your puppy understand what you want from him when he is taken to that spot and it will be easier to keep clean.
Every time she goes for a pee say "good girl nice pee (or whatever words you want to use) and give her a tiny tasty treat. Same with poo. These guys obviously don't know that we don't want them to do their busy in the house, there for we have to teach them. Be prepared they cannot hold their pee/poo for long so will have problems during the night. Their bladders are just so small. (Just like human babies).

You should always try to take your puppy out at the following times:
•Immediately after the puppy wakes up
•First thing in the morning
•Last thing at night
•A few minutes after eating or drinking
•After playing
•After any excitement (e.g. after visitors greet your puppy).
Sometimes dogs (adult dogs too) need to run around a bit to get the "systems" going.

What signs should I look for?
If you see your puppy sniffing around the ground, crouching down about to go to the toilet or actually going to the toilet inside the house, quickly get his attention by clapping, calling him excitedly and running to the door so that he will follow you out. If he is actually going to the toilet you may need to shout something extravagant to get his attention and stop him in his tracks (e.g. something silly like 'sausages!!!' will help as it is not personal or aggressive). Make sure the shout does not scare him as this will make him nervous and more prone to toileting in the wrong place. The purpose of the shout is to alert him. By doing so, he will shut his bowels and hold it whilst you walk him outside. It is best that he makes his own way out the door rather than carrying him out, as this will help him learn that he actually needs to make his own way to the door when he needs to go to the toilet.

What if my puppy makes mistakes?
You will need to clean the area thoroughly to get rid of smells. Note that household cleaners do not get rid of all the proteins that we cannot smell. Do not use any cleaner with ammonia or bleach, as it will smell similar to the ammonia in urine and the puppy will identify it as a toilet area.How long should it take to housetrain my puppy?
Like all young animals, puppies do not have full control of their bodies. Depending on the individual puppy, the breed and how much effort you put in the training, it may take up to 8 months to have a completely housetrained dog. Accidents will probably happen at night since the puppy may not be able to hold it in for many hours at a time initially. However do not despair; as long as the puppy is consistently going outside during the day he will soon learn that toileting means going outside when he has better control of his body.
You can also have your puppy in his crate in your room initially so that you can listen for the signs. If your puppy cries during the night pay attention to him and take him outside immediately. Do not fuss him or play with him, just go outside with him for a few minutes until he eliminates, praise him and then calmly and quietly take him back to sleep in his crate. This way the puppy doesn't think that three o'clock in the morning is a good time to play.

Remember prevention is the key to successful housetraining. Take things slowly, have consistency and keep a routine. Be fair and kind to the young life endowed into your care. You will soon be enjoying happy, mess-free days with your best friend.

• Dogs pee in the house because they do not know that it is wrong. To effectively teach a dog that pee-ing in the house is undesirable, you must closely supervise him and "catch him in the act". When you catch him doing it, non-mark him, and take him outside. After she finishes, I praise her very well and give her lots of yummy treats. After some repetitions, she got the idea and prefers to go outside because she gets nice food for going outside.
  
  Note that if you do not catch your puppy in the act then there is no point punishing him because he will not know what you are punishing him for. Instead just move him somewhere else while you clean-up the mess.
  
  If you are not around to supervise, then crate your puppy or put him in a long-term enclosure with puppy pads. Puppies have small bladders and they need to go potty pretty often. I used to take mine out >5 times per day. She usually needs to go when she wakes up, and after vigorous exercise.

Dog Health Questions: The Koehler Method of Dog Training?

I am think about picking up the book "The Koehler Method of Dog Training" what I have read about it it looks pretty good. What are your experiences with this training? What are the pros and cons? Would you recommend this training? and lastly how well does this training work for the different ranges of dogs from soft to hard?

Koehler is definitely worth the read...but in my opinion it's damaged more dogs than I care to think about. People who don't understand being TOO harsh on TOO soft of a dog will create character problems. Also, the people who use it like a Bible will never see the full potential of their dogs because it's a 50 year old book based on 1 man's way of seeing things. This is the same reason Bruce Lee was so kick-***. Everybody thought their style of martial art was gospel...he instead took bits and pieces from boxing, karate, fencing, silat, and wing chun and we all know how that turned out...EXPLOSIVE! As a life-long martial artist I apply this 1 quote Bruce Lee said to all aspects in life, and that is: "Take what is useful, and disregard all that is not". Koehler method has some very useful info and technique, but people who "buy" into it as gospel...well, they don't win the Sch. Nationals anymore now do they? Not just Schutzhund either, the French are the best trainers in the World, they also use treats, so do the Dutch and most Germans...not using treats because you want a dog to "Obey you and not work for treats" is ridiculous, that's what the corrections phase of training is for, to teach a dog he MUST work regardless of whether or not you have a toy or treat or decide to praise him.

• I'm doing Koehler right now - so far BEST training method i've found with my dog. She's never been so in tune with my movements and never paid this much attention to ME without treats.
  
  Thing is you have to throw everything else out the window - you don't "incorporate" it you just follow the book step by step. The book explains why.
  
  You start by working a week of foundation training on a 15 foot line. Then move to a six foot leash. Then start with the sit, automatic sit, stay, down, etc. So yeah, it has a lot of commands to teach (same as any basic class) and has a lot on proofing, too.
  
  Only con is that it's not for any of the "bleeding hearts" who can't bear to discipline their dogs OR let their dog discipline themselves. This book bases training on allowing the dog to make their own mistakes - this includes letting the dog bolt, you walking in the other direction when they do, and letting them hit the end of the 15 foot leash.
  
  Even if you don't use the method, it's a good book to pick up and read. As i already said, my dog has NEVER been so attentive to me and i don't have to carry around a bag of treats to get her to be.


• Wow - just went and looked at the sight that was posted by another answerer. That is exactly how I used to train my dogs (didn't even know that the classes I were taking was a specific method!). Works amazing. They do win in AKC and the dogs are 100% trustworthy off leash. I still use the basic concepts (because that is how I learned to train dogs) and am always told how well-behaved our dogs are (I do not think they are particularly well-behaved because we only do the basics at the moment and nothing "fancy"). Absolutely go for it. This works and your dog will LOVE it!

• Its always worth it to learn something new. But remember when you're dealing with aversives your potential for fallout is higher. The corrections need to be just right in both timing, intensity, etc. A misdelivered correction can ruin a dog. A mis timed click, no big deal.
  
  If you're going to train this way you have to be prepared for the fallout. Not all dogs will suffer fallout, but why risk it?
  
  That's not to say there aren't corrections used here, but I avoid them when possible.

Dog Health Questions: The more i read about dog training, the more confused i get! what's the best known approach to training a dog?

i watch cesar on tv-that makes sense, i've read many books on"positive only" approaches-that makes sense too. i have tried both clicker training and cesar's way. i feel very confused. and opinions are strong and dogmatic(no pun intended) in both "camps". meanwhile, my dog still has problems. one "way" seems to work for some things, another for others.

Really - it depends on the dog! There is no right way for every dog. Personally - I use positive only when first training a new skill (or for something like agility), but corrections (which can be as simple as not getting the toy or treat) when proofing the behaviour.

• The best approach is one that works for you and your dog. One way of training doesn't work for everyone or every dog. It helps if your dog enjoys training. Make it fun, a game, rewards and praise help and tend to get you further than hitting and yelling. Be patient, if this is the first time you've trained your dog you are learning WITH your dog. If you can find a club that trains and your interested in, join it. It's easier to learn from a group of people that have been in your shoes, they can give you tips as your working with your dog... pointers on what might work that you haven't tried. Most of all, do what works for you and the dog as I said before and be patient!


• That's the wonderful thing about training - you can choose any which way you want that works with your dog, or you can choose multiple ways. You don't have to stick to one method so long as what your are doing with the dog in not confusing for the animal and is consistent.
  
  For example - Cesar Millan. I do not approve of many methods (alpha roll) and his methods may not be best for all people.
  
  BUT i use several of his methods that make sense - like setting rules/boundaries/limitations that my dog must follow at all times, exercise daily, consistency, i use touch when voice and smell (calling name and waving treat) does not work, and so on.
  
  Yet at the same time i PRAISE with TREATS (as opposed to his method of just relaxing and letting that be the dogs reward) when obedience training, as well as using play or being with the family as a reward for good behavior.
  
  See what i mean? I mix and match and use what my dog responds to best. For example: My dog loves other dogs but gets WAY too excited. She will not take treats because she is too excited, so the only way i can reward her is by being calm and letting her go over when SHE is calm.


• It all depends on you and your dogs. I use both positive dog training methods and clicker training methods. Both have always worked very well for me. I get my hands on any dog training book I can find, and I use whatever methods make the most sense to me. Also, my family members also use positive/clicker dog training and it's always worked for them. I think Cesar tends to lean more towards punishment and outdated methods. But that's my opinion. Keep reading books and try different methods out for yourself!


• There are always a few basic ways to approach dog training. e.g. whenever any dog does something bad, say NO, forcefully and it is usually accompanies with a hit (not very hard, more like a forceful pat) on the head. Then stuff like sit and lie down is pretty much common sense. For sit you pull the leash back over the dogs head and lie down, you pull the leash down when the dog is sitting down.
  But remember to always praise the dog as much as possible and if you are going to punish it, do so immedietly after it did something to deserve being punished; otherwise the dog would not know what it was being punished for.


• Each dog is different and each person is as well. You have to try a few methods and use what works for you.
  Every person may or may not be comfortable doing things one way. I use a combination of things.
  Some of the positive only stuff but for certain things I find that it does not work well and then I use something more along the lines of Cesar Millans methods. His ways work very well with behavior modification training.
  I train upland bird dogs for hunting and field trails as well as working with behavior modification training mostly with Dobermans.
  I have learned tips and tricks from many sources and when I go and work with a client and their pet I try to give them several options and allow them to use what they are most comfortable with and what works for them.
  There is not really one best way. Be open and take bits and pieces from any method that works. Tweak them to fit your needs.
  Remember to have fun and enjoy life with your pet.

• I would try one way only. Positive only is really the best because your puppy wants to please you. Clicker training works really well and that is what i am using to train my puppy right now. Your dog is probably confused because you are using two different ways... If you are having troubles training your puppy try enrolling your puppy in some puppy training classes. I enrolled my puppy in the PetSmart training and i think it is awesome! Not only do you learn more about puppies and how to train properly but your puppy will get introduced to other puppies and it is a good thing to get your puppy socialized with other puppies! My puppy used to be scared to death of other puppies but thanks to PetSmart's training course he loves other puppies and constantly wants to play with them!


• You are absolutely right. One way works for some things, and other ways work for other issues. I use different words, sounds, and commands for each of my dogs. If a command isn't working, I switch to something that gets that dogs attention. They all train at their own pace too. You just have to do the best you can, and sometimes it seems like you have trained on an issue a million times before the dog gets it, but you can't quit.

The thing to do is check out the trainer first though (there are even bad professionals in private practice). Watch some classes...talk to students and see if it might be what you need before just enrolling. I know some great trainers and some that aren't so great. If you're familiar with Zac George from Animal Planet...he was a petsmart trainer and is well known for his training skills :)

  for basics near me it's about 94 for 6 weeks 10.00 every visit after that. place is great! run by people that show and work there dogs in agility, conformation and obedience trials.

• Depends where you go. I can train at my local kennel club for $150 and that covers the whole year. If I become a member it's more like $40. If I go to one of the more "fancy" places around here I think it's about $110+ for 8 weeks. Some other places are a little more reasonable at about $75 for 8 weeks. I don't have a clue what places like Petco cost, I have never (and would never) taken a class there.


• I paid $90 to take part in a basic class at a dog training club, but other places that do it professionally are usually more per class (I was anticipating spending $200 or more for this club, and was happily surprised by the low price).
