Dog Health Questions: I need some dog tips.?

I have a Lab/Chow mix. He's a little over a year old now. My issue is that i'm beginning to think he's untrainable. here's a list of things he does that i havent found a successful way in teaching him not to.

gets in the garbage
pees in his cage
whines in his cage
chews up his pillow
barks all the time late at night when he's outside
gets into EVERYTHING
gets food of tables and counters

now, i watch a lot of different dog training shows and have read things on it, but nothing works. Ive tried shock collars, and a thing that emits a high pitched noise when he barks. he's immune to everything, i cant walk him at all. so if anyone has tips that have worked for them please let me know. im going crazy. i have to sneak into my own house late at night cause hell hear me and bark all night in his cage. its getting out of control.

Have you actually attended any obedience classes or just watch TV shows?

Enroll in an obedience class, now. If you "can't walk him at all" then it's a safe bet that he's not getting nearly enough exercise. You have a high energy mix that needs several hours of intense exercise per day. Without that exercise he's going to channel that energy into the destructive behaviors you are describing.

Between obedience class, increased exercise and increased mental stimulation most of your problems will vanish on their own.

• EXERCISE!!! dogs, especially labs and chows need lots of exercise. If he are given a productive outlet for his energy, then he will be too tired to bark all night or destroy everything. don't keep him in his cage for more than a few hours during the day.
  
  If he chews his pillow, don't give him a pillow. Try getting him a hard rubber Kong (at most pet stores, the black ones are toughest) or a few nyla bones. THis will give him something to chew on.
  
  When he whines and barks does he do this when you are in the room with him? The peeing could be separation anxiety or maybe he just needs to go. Try limiting his water intake before crating him.
  
  To keep him from getting into stuff you can try purchasing some bitter apple spray, or simply keeping an eye on him. If you are persistent, he will eventually get the idea that you are going to stop him from getting into stuff and so he will not try. I cannot stress enough how much exercise can help with several of these problems. Try taking him to a dog park, playing with him in the yard, or going on walks. when walking him, be firm and persistent. use quick corrective snaps of the leash when he misbehaves and don't let him pull constantly. • 1) Never leave a dog in a room with an open garbage can. Get a can with a lid, keep the can in a shut closet or bathroom.
  2) Take the dog out to pee often enough that he willnot have a chance to pee in hos crate.
  3) How long is this dog spending in his crate? Is the dog getting enough exercise? Is the dog being left alone too much? Dogs are social creatures, if your work, school or own social schedule does not give you enough time with the dog, you will always have a problem. If the dog has enough activity and stimulation, the dog will be tired and worn out and will be happy to sleep at night.
  4)Get rid of the pillow and the dog cannot chew it up. A healthy 1 year old dog does not need a pillow.
  5) If the dog is getting into everything, you are not spending enough time doing activities with the dog. Dogs are not stuffed toys. You have an active breed which needs walked for 1, 2 or 3 miles a day or other suitable exercise. The dog needs to be socialized and with people for at least half the day..
  6) Do not leave food on your table and counter . I do not know anyone who owns a lab and leaves food on the table and opened garbage cans around. Put the food away.
  
  I do not want to be rude. I believe you have good intentions. But I think you are the one who needs trained not the dog. Put the shock collar away. You do not have a consistent enough lifestyle and training program in place to use the shock collar effectively. See if there is a local rescue group in your time who might be able to work with.


• This is just all way to much to answer in one. I have alot to say but Ill sum it up as best as I can.
  Getting into the garbage and chewing his pillows - boredom can lead a dog into having destructive behavior. Play fetch with him, take him on a walk or run. He has all this bent up energy and has to release it some how and ripping through garbage and destroying pillows are great ways to waste energy for him. Remember a tired dog is a well behaved dog. Take the time each day to exhaust him by playing out back with him or taking him for walks or to a dog park.
  Pee's and whines in cage in his cage - the dog may feel abandoned and frightened when left in the crate you need to reasure the dog that his crate is a good place to be where he can seek settle not something he should dread being in. You need to not use the crate as place he goes to be punished for doing something bad.
  getting food off tables and counters - thats just bad training on your part. the dog has learned that this is a way to get yummy treats for free. you must never hand him treats or even his own food without him having to work for it to. something as simple as sit can go along way as long as he knows he must go through you first to get what he wants.
  barking at night - sign of boredom or the dog may feel stressed being alone. you need to teach the dog to be more independent and make sure you drain him of his energy.

The show is when he handles different cases of "baddoggieness" with other people. I would definitely watch his show and follow his advise. We have a dog called Annie and she is (or maybe, was) very wild. Couldn't train her. I followed this guy's advise and Annie is now a very well trained pooch. Dog Health Questions: Before a dog goes into heat for the first time, can they get spotting?

I have a five and a half month old standard poodle. The other day I found some scentless red spots on her bed and I assumed she had gone into heat for the first time. I put some puppy dog training diapers on her for that night and most of the next day but I haven't seen any more blood. That was 3 days ago and there are no more signs that she is in heat. I have no idea what else the red spots could have been. Can a female get spotting before, or in between going into heat? I do intend to get her fixed, but at the moment she is at college with me since I am in the process of training her as a service dog and we have no access to a vet until late May. Any ideas?

When you push your dogs nose in his pee, he is seeing Yes there is pee here and you are screaming No. The dog is processing "you don't want my nose in the pee--but then why are you pushing my nose INTO the pee?" As you can see, that makes no sense.

You are training their instincts--telling you when they need to go outside. You can't train them to clean up the rug afterwards. So punishing them afterwards is pointless.

• the dog wont understand whats going on. if you tell him to 'come' to the pee then tell him off he will think he is being told off for coming. he has already forgotten everything else. he only remembers what he has just done and will think he is being told off for that.


• No, it's because it is giving attention which is exactly waht you don't want to do. Giving attention even negative is giving a reward..in otherwords it is rewarding inappropriate behavior.

  If you catch the dog in the act you can simply firmly say "no" and take the dog out to the appropriate place and wait for him to finish and then praise, praise, praise, Saying "no" in a firm voice (no yelling/screaming) usually causes the dog to stop in midpee/poop and gives you the time to get him out to finish.

I have a 11 month old male puggle(or beagle pug mix) He is a rescue and i don't know much about his background besides he lived in a puppy mill with 9 other dogs in 1 cage. I have a black and golden retriever and i want them to learn how to take objects willingly from me. however they do take tennis balls, and doggy toys and bones from me but if its stuff like grabbing blankets (part of waking me up training) and grabbing cloth (part of opening fridge training) or grabbing water bottle or grabbing regular house hold items they just won't do that. How do you teach dogs to grab on to things other than dog toys and bones and balls

6 Step by Step Instructions For Dog Training Preparation

Looks like half the job is already done for you. The problem is that dogs don't generalise well- they understand that they are allowed to pick up certain items, but don't understand that they can pick up other items.

There are a few different things you can do to encourage this behaviour.
The first one is to make a game out of it- if you want your dog to pick up things like blankets he needs to understand that he is allowed to pick up this kind of material. You might want to make a flirt pole and use some old blankets to encourage him to show an interest in blankets and have them in his mouth.
There are also toys out there that you can put water bottles in- so these might be good in desensetising him to water bottles and encouraging him to handle them in his mouth- most dogs love the crackling sound that plastic water bottles make!
Instead of using a cloth on the fridge, make up a fabric tug toy out of polar fleece and encourage him to play with it, then attach it to the fridge and encourage him to play tug with the fridge door.

You can also try a fourced retrieve or similar where you physically put the things in his mouth, hold them there until he accepts it, and then reward him for holding the item.

Remember that these are not easy commands to teach, and most service dogs are trained from a young age and even then not all of them make the cut- so don't be too harsh on your boy if he takes a while to catch on. Start small- baby steps, and gradually work up to the big picture.
It helps if you sit back and divide the command into say, 10 parts.

The first part might be encouraging the dog to bite the fabric- in which case you would encourage any move towards the fabric, then when he starts mouthing it give him plenty of praise and rewards and when he is biting it 10 times out of 10 you can move onto the next step.

The second part might be to play tug with the fabric, etc.

The third part might be to attach the fabric to some small item (Maybe a low cabinet door- something that will open easily) and encourage the dog to play tug while youre still holding the other end.

The fourth part might be to encourage the dog to tug the fabric attached to the small item but you arent holding it.

I got this new book as a freebie when my Koehler book came. And it is very interesting. It's called
"Taste of His Own Medicine" By Alexis Walker... an apparently new dog training star.

In it she explains the new trend in obedience training dogs. So if your dog rushes you at the door, jumping up and trying to nip you in the face, you have to beat him to it. So walk in the door get in his face and start nipping at his mouth.

For leash training, if your dog pulls, you're supposed to continuously try to outrun him.

If he urinates on your carpet... well, you get the idea.

Has anyone heard of this new trainer or her methods? Has anyone tried them?

I don't know if it's for me but I'm open to anything new. It has some high praise testimonials from dog owners and an endorsement from something called the PDTC. Anyone ever heard of that?

And it has the most adorable Yorkie/Staff mix on the cover. So I might just have to give it a try.

• It might work for some dogs, but it definitely won't work for all. I think it could actually exacerbate bad behavior. It's definitely a far from fail-proof training style.
  
  It sure as heck wouldn't work with my dog. He's part Husky so there's no outrunning him on walks. And that's without mentioning that reciprocating a bite to the face could cause an injury. And urinating on a carpet would just encourage the dog to eliminate there. The "eye for an eye" methodology on the whole is seriously flawed.


• You're kidding me right? How many more insane, lame methods are people going to come up with? Why on earth would I want to get in my dog's face and start attempting to nip him? Why would I want to try to outrun him? That's just ridiculous!
  
  No, I certainly haven't heard of this trainer or methods! Figures this trainer is now a star! It's sad how much people lack common sense these days. It definitely shows when people will fall for a joke of a trainer like this person obviously is!
  
  ADD: The jab at Koehler (Even if there was no jab) is fine with me! That method is cruel, dangerous, and outdated. I don't advocate this method and I never will.

• PetSmart and other corporations offer great petsmart training,I had to go to training for three weeks to be cerified! They work from the basics. I am actually and accredited pet trainer for petsmart. In the classes that I teach we work on potty training, discouraging unwanted behaviors such as barking, nipping, jumping chewing and potty training. We also do the basics such as sit, down, leave it, drop it, take it, walking on a leash, loose leash walking, come when called. Shake, hi five, bang bang dead dong, and so much more. The classes are so beneficial to you and your puppy, we use positive reinforcement. =) You should look into it!

• My boyfriend and I, had just got our dog(Max) and it was very hard at first because it was in the apartment. Our dog wasnt really a listener and had like anxiety. Maybe since he didnt really know us, we tried a couple books that really didnt make much of a difference. Then we tried " Secrects to Dog Triaining" it was easier since it explains everything step by step. We have seen a lot of improvement with him. Dog Health Questions: Dog Training....?

Any tips on dog training? I'm trying to re-train my dog, it's working really well so far. The only issue I have is that she is way obsessed with her treats. I had them sitting on the ground, but she was so obsessed with them that I had to put them in a cup. I'm not sure what to do. Also, what tricks should should I teach her-- I have sit, lay, we're working on roll over, and heel. She can also do come and stay.

So You Want A Career In Dog Training

My dog has similar problems when I use food to teach and control behavior. Based on my experience these are some things that have worked for me:

Remember to always associate words with your dog's actions, name a behavior and you will have some control over that behavior.

I've realized rewarding with food is best when it reinforces a behavior not controlling it like a command.

Also it's important to remember that your dog is learning something every time you interact with it, make sure you're always shaping and conditioning good behavior.

As far as tricks go you've pretty much got the basics covered. I personally like the crawl trick. It is easier to have a second person gently keep the dog from standing up while the other calls the dog. But it can be achieved with only one person if you're the only one training.

Here are some basic instructions on what I do...it probably won't be exactly the same for your dog but it's a good starting point.

Get down on your knees and gently grab hold onto collar with one hand and put the other on the dogs back. Now tell your dog to CRAWL and gently pull forward on the collar. The response you will probably get is that he will try to stand up. That's when you use your other hand that you have on his back. Push him down gently before he stands up all the way. Now try it again while giving a little pressure from the hand on his back. If he crawls a couple inches, praise him (make sure he doesn't get up while you do) and give him a treat. Now try it again.

If he is really stubborn and wont budge an inch, then get that second person to help you. The second person (Lets call her jane) will stand a little distance (Start with only a couple feet away) away from you and your dog. Get back down on your knees next to the dog with one hand on his back and one on his collar. Tell Jane to call him. The dog will of course try to get up and run to Jane. Push him down gently and make him CRAWL.

Once you have done this a couple times and he is making no effort of standing up while he is crawling, you can start not putting your hand on his back. If he stands up go back to the last step. If he remains down, lots of praise! Now you can move on with you standing while giving the command. Then move away and tell him to CRAWL. If he does, your work is done!

I also like to lure him into CRAWLING by holding a treat in front of his nose, dragging it along the ground. Keep a hand on his back/collar.

Anyway...that was a pretty windy response but I hope it gives you some helpful suggestions!

• Shake or I just taught my puppy collie to give me a hug when im sitting down. Oh we also hung a bell on a string from the door to go outside and when he wants out we are trying to get him to ring the bell. Its actually working pretty well.

• I wouldn't do anything about her obsession -- obsession is a great asset to have while training your dog, which I say from experience. My own dog is obsessed with toys.

  is only permitted to go through doors on command (which prevents the dog from running out through the door accidentally) -- Geh Draussen, and Geh Rein
  and we're working on Fuss (heel).
  
  Most of these have hand signals, so I can give him just the verbal cue, just the hand signal, or both together, depending on the situation.
  
  I think there are some other things that he can do, but I can't think of anything else specific at the moment.... We also do clicker training; that's a lot of fun. If you've never tried it, give it a shot : )


• You could teach her to crawl, rewind (back up), take a bow, chase your tail, Wave hello. All of these are taught in the Click-A-Trick class @ PetSmart. Its a 6 week course and its fun. As far as treats go, try putting the treats on the counter and have her do a sit, then get the treat off the counter instead of having it in your hand. Then make him do a sit and a down before rewarding. Then 2 sits and 2 downs then rewarding. Slowly wean him off the treats. But dont brake them off completely because hes been taught using positive reinforcment. Basically to him you'll end up being like a slot machine. He'll continue to give you his all because he never knows when hes gonna get it. Dont go to long without rewarding though or he'll give up on you. Good luck.
