Dog Health Questions: Dog section - I am curious... Anyone else agree?

People come on here all the time and ask questions and are so aggregated about their dogs. Training can be so time consuming and frustrating. But doesn't anyone else get that warm tingly feeling when you've been working on something and your dog FINALLY gets it? Is it not SO rewarding?
Personally I get such a sense of pride and accomplishment, even if it's not consistent yet.
Does anyone agree?

My current very muscular male Dobermann was a devil for forging ahead on walks & had been clearly taught the command "heel". I purchased a prong collar, my Dobermann equated any kind of collar with FUN, I gave the "heel" command & as usual he forged ahead. The command was immediately enforced by a quick pull {pressure not pain} on the prong & he was FINALLY motivated to walk to heel.

He now walks calmly to heel on a flat collar.

Each dog is different & sometimes it takes time to find the right tool & training method for the dog.....but when you do & it clicks for the dog, it is *really* rewarding!!

• I do believe my most exciting recent accomplishment with any of my dogs is with my Pit. We got her from a rescue at 3 months and she had no training at all.

• I truly agree with you. I have been working so hard, seven days a week, to get my little house dog to walk on a leash without wanting to stop and sniff everything. Dog Health Questions: Will a shock collar prevent my dog from chasing wildlife?

I hate posting this question, because I know every PETA freak who doesn't know jack about dog training is going to flip out. Believe me when I say that I'm a huge proponent of positive methods and minimal correction. I also know that there are some lures that dogs would pass a steak dinner for -- and that means that positive training just won't work.

Our 1 y.o. German-Shepherd mixed breed dog might well have the best Southern hiking physiology of any dog I have ever seen. Unlike true Shepherds, her coat is short and requires no maintenance. She is lean and tall and a great rock climber. She is also part hound and loves to chase wildlife -- rabbits and deer. We have trained her to an "emergency come" command with steak and cheesburger, and not even that command will stop her from chasing a deer.
This last time, we lost her for 30 min., only to find her back at the car. She has good recall with other people or dogs. Question: will a remote control shock collar stop her?

• If you're talking about the type of collar that will cause a shock when you use the remote.... that might work, but only if you use it every single time. If you're talking about the invisible fence, the dog may decide it's worth the discomfort to suffer the momentary shock. On the other hand, he will have to endure the shock again when he comes back. German Shepherds are very intelligent, and might eventually decide that tweo shccks aren't worthwhile.... but at first he'll probably take off.

  I know this is a fence, but it's the same idea. If you do do this I would suggest flagging your property so she can see her bounderies until she is used to it. walk the property every day for a while.


• You need to do more training. A emergency come command is all good but every you say come she should be at your side no matter what. You shoudl teach her the check in method and watch me. I have called a terrier off a rabbit with this. Check in simply this start at home every time she checks in called or not called she gets a treat do this for while until whenever you say her name she right there looking for you. Then you shoudl alo teach watch me command - it very useful, soon enough she will be watching you and not every distraction. More pbedience training in a class is a must as well. Until she is reilable keep her on lead unless she is in a fenced in area. that way you aren't worrying about her getting hurt. A year old is young to be off leash all the time and reilable but sound like you are doing great working with her already so keep it up.

There are a few colleges/schools/programs but they're really just starter courses that give you a 6-8 week glance at what being a trainer is like. REAL trainers/behaviorists gain experience by finding mentors, and working with those mentors for years upon years. Titling dogs, working with a wide variety of dogs, seminars, etc.

No trainer/behaviorist is going to be reputable for at least 10 years. No one is going to start their own successful business right out of high school, or right after a one year stint with a trainer. • Well, first, though there are some schools that teach dog training, it is really something you have to learn by training your own dogs to high levels of competitive obedience.
  
  My best advice is if you want to train dogs, become a member of a dog obedience training club, most clubs have requirements before allowing someone to assist or teach classes. At my own club, you must earn a CD (Companion Dog) title thru either AKC, UKC, CanKC, AMBOR before you can assist an instructor in teaching a Beginner 1 or Beginner 2 class.
  
  The obedience and/or agility instructors I use, charge approx $80.00 for a 1 hour private session. However, these people have earned OTCH (Obedience Trial Champion titles) or MACH (Master Agility Champion title) on muliple dogs, not just 1 dog.   I personally would not train with someone who just went to school and got "Dog Training certificate. Dog training is really more hands on.
  
  As for could you live on dog training for a living, it will depend on you, how good of a trainer you become. The people I mentioned above, dog training is a part time job, they supplement their income with some other job.

  Vets office does NOT equal dog trainer..
  Being a vet assistant or a vet tech or a vet, is absolutely nothing compared to being a dog trainer.

  Working in a vets office is stressful, need good skills with people and their pets, and somedays you would prefer to drive your car into the median versus going to work.

I would trie the alpha roll, it's what I do for my dog (shepherd akita mix). It at least teaches him it's wrong and it gets him calmed down.

When he gets snappy with another dog, I grab him, put him on his back and hold his head to the ground. I put one hand on his neck and one on his chest to keep him down. But make sure not to restrict his breathing in any way. It's a technique used my the dog whisperer.

I would put more emphasis on the training...people want to know all the benefits they can get...The last one is best, but I think it could still be better. As a trainer myself...I would not take you as a professional in the training department...you want them to know they can learn more from you than a doggie handbook. Want your dog to listen when you say 'lay down' or something like that...You have to touch on the common problems people have with their dog. No hard feelings just trying to help. Good luck!

• I'd look for a non-corporate dog training facility and go there. I've had experience with both places and honestly, they're not the greatest seeing as how you have an older puppy with strong behavioral issues. PetSmart taught more tricks and basic commands, things that seemed easy enough to learn on your own. I did most of the training on my own outside of class and really didn't learn anything new. I have BIG dogs and tricks just don't cut it. PetCo is pretty disorganized, at least where I'm located (VA). Noone in the store knows when classes are, the trainers can NEVER be reached and the training areas are usually too small. Being a PetSmart competitor, they pretty much teach the same things (sit, paw, roll over, down...). I'm currently enrolled in non-corporate obedience classes and they are absolutely by far the BEST in training and the best value for the money. The classes are smaller, the instructors aren't just trained on a whim, they usually have years of experience (mine has 33) and it's just more comforting. They also really focus on your issues rather than a strict plan of commands and tricks. Hopefully you'll make the right decision!!

Dog Health Questions: How to stop a dog from barking HUMANELY? Training or high pitch noise collars?

My dog barks constantly and it has gotten to the point that when she barks my grandfather hits her- which I cannot stand. When I speak up I get called a "hippie" and blah blah blah. I refuse shock collars as they are extremely inhumane. They have a new collar that emits an ultra-sonic high pitched noise when ever the dog barks, which my grandmother wants me to get. The reason people resort to bark collars instead of training is sheer laziness. It's easier to go out and buy a bark collar than to spend hours running around with your dog.
  
  Combine exercise with a "quiet" command. I use a clicker. When the dog barks, give the quiet command. When the barking ceases, click the clicker and give the dog a treat. He soon associates "quiet" with receiving a treat.

If you see him chewing on your slippers, say "Give it" and then take the slipper, and at the same time, reward him with something better than a slipper (training treats, sm. piece of cheese, sm. piece of chicken). This is a give and take game. He has to get something better than the slipper. Then you give him one of his toys.
  Biting on sofa: If you see him do it, a sharp NO and then distract him once again with a toy he can chew on.
  Pooping in the house: How old is he? If he's a puppy, there will be accidents. Take him out when he wakes up, after he plays, and after he eats. When he goes, PRAISE him like he did the best thing in the world for you!! If you are leaving him to roam around the house when you are not there, you should be crating him.


• Sounds like you got quite a dog on your hands or should I say puppy. Ok the pooping part is easy. Your dog needs to be on scheduled feedings. Do not leave the food down all day. Feeding 2 times a day is fine. Give him/her half an hour to eat. If they do not eat all their food pick up the dish. Keep him/her in eyesight at all times. All dogs will poop soon after eating. Some will go right away, so will go in about half hour. Mine goes about an hour. Keep track. Dogs need routine.
  Now for the biting. Well give the dog something else to chew on. Toy, bone, rawhide. hopefully that will distract them. Always give praise and attention for what the do right and try to ignore the bad behaviors. That means not saying or yelling at them when they do wrong. Dog Health Questions: About the "No Free Lunch" dog training...?

I've become more and more interested in this method as I have an unruly boston terrier who I'd like to work through the program with. She's an older rescue (6 years but acts 1 year old), but the program seems to work equally well for older and younger dogs.

My question is this...how serious do I need to be about the 'no high places' rule. She loves to lie on the back of the couch and sun herself to sleep. This occurs when I'm not on the couch so it isn't as if she's trying to disrupt my sitting arrangement. It's just a fave perch for her. If told to 'off' she moves with out problem. Should I make her give up this spot, or is this referring only to dominance posturing on furniture?

If anyone's interested the main reason I want to work with her through the program is her insistence to play when SHE wants to. I want to be able to ask her to play when I want to throw the ball, not when she whines and asks to play. Also, she tends to greet people in an inappropriate way (jumps and wants to lick). I know she's a hyper boston, but I'm not OK with her jumping and licking. My other dog does not get to do that so neither should she.

I have a feeling she was pretty much able to do whatever she wanted at her old house, so we have our work cut out for us. I was using conventional training when I came across this method. She already knows sit, stay, off and come. I've had her for 2 months now.

The spot on the couch won't make that much difference. What you are after, is the overall attitude that this program instills. Just tell her it is OK to get on the couch back, or pick her up and put her there, so she knows she is doing it with your blessing, rather than stealing the opportunity .

Dog Health Questions: Any dog training tips?

I recently received a dog that just turned a year old a couple months ago. I have started training him, and he is very smart, but I have trouble keeping him under control. He gets excited very easily, and I even have trouble getting him to eat his meal (even if it's a food he really enjoys). I've tried doing his training at times of the day he seems most relaxed, but once I start, he just gets way too excited to continue. He begins to jump if I'm standing, lean on me and lick me if I'm crouching, and lay across my lap if I'm sitting. He starts licking and whining as if he hasn't seen me in ages. I'm not sure how to get him to behave. I have taught him so sit still and not jump on people, but as soon as he begins another trick, or goes on to the next person, he seems to forget everything. Any tips on how to keep him from getting so excited during training?

I would suggest exercising him for an hour or two before you begin your training so that he will already have most of his energy spent.

If he continues to jump, use Binaca. Hide it in your hand and when he jumps say off and then give him a shot in the mouth as fast as you can. The sudden spray scares the crap out of them and most dogs don't like the taste.

If you are still having problems, I would suggest a Gentle Leader Collar or a Scruffy Guider Collar. Every dog should have a GLC. A nice, humane way to show your dog that you are in control, that you are the "pack leader."

You may also want to think about doing clicker training. You can research that.

You can search for a training center in your area. If you like positive reinforcement make sure to include that in your search.

For a collar we use the gentle leader or head collar and this works really well and would recommend that to someone who needs to work on leash walking. If you don't need work on that a harness or collar would do fine.
