Teach Your Dog (And Yourself) Some New Tricks With Online Dog Training Programs

He may not like the smell
You never can really tell
Or maybe they feel bad on his feet
Remember, puppy pee isn't sweet
Slowly switch him over
Enjoy your dog
Is his name Clover

Dog Training Supplies - Dog Collars

  • No matter which Puppy Pads you buy, they are all Utter Rubbish !!!! They teach you're dog that it's Okay to pee&poop in the house. If you want to potty train you're puppy properly.. Next time he has an accident in the house, say "NO" and put him outside, he will learn that if he needs the toilet, he has to go outside. (:

  • How about throwing all the pads out and teaching him to go outside instead.

  • Why are you encouraging your dog to pee in the house? Those training pads are for accidents- not for actually teaching them! You are supposed to take him outside so that he knows to go outside! Teaching a dog to use a pad is teaching him it's okay to go in the house, it doesn't matter that it's on a pad. The dog will pee outside if you take him out often and praise and reward him when he pees. If he is taken out every hour and after every meal and you wait until he goes to reward, he will be house trained in a matter of days.

Dog Health Questions: How to stop my indoor dog from pooping by the door?

My 2 and a half year old dog who was perfectly potty trained for a couple years has started to poop by the front door after I got my carpet cleaned. He's a small dog, trained to poop on dog pads for years, and all of a sudden he picked up this habit. When this would happen before I would show him where his dog pad was, and praise him when he went where he was supposed to go. Fine, everything worked. But now it's not having the same effect. He doesn't care. This has been going on now for 2 months! I live in an apartment, so I tried crate training him but he barked while I was gone and I got a notice from the office that the next time I'll get kicked out. I've lost patience, he's 2.5 years old, not a puppy, when I come home he runs straight to his traveling crate so he knows he does wrong. If this doesn't get fixed soon, he'll be on petfinder next. HELP please!

Thanks.

Dog Training Collars - A Helping Tool

Recommended Answer:
"If this doesn't get fixed soon, he'll be on petfinder next".

REALLY.

You train your dog to "go" inside. On a peepad, whatever. Its still *inside*. And you're going to get rid of him for doing what you taught him to do?

Keep training the dog. Its not his fault that you spend more time worrying about your carpet then you do training him. Get a dog-walker to come by halfway through the day to let him out if that is what needs to be done. You are committed to this dog, and don't think for one second that it is acceptable to burden a shelter with your 'problem'. This untrained dog is no ones problem but your own.

Dog Training - Tips For Consistency

  • That sure would be a shame to get rid of a family member because you didn't want to stick out his training.

Try limiting his access to a single room with a potty pad. BTW, this is a great reason why pads should never be used.

ADDED: Let me get this straight; you solved the problem by putting pads next to the door and its not good enough? The dog can't have two spots? What's the difference? If he had 5 spots at least its not on the carpet. And whats more, you blame the dog and then threaten to get rid of him because of your ignorance. You're a piece of work.

  • well get dog pads aand put a lot of them in front of the door.

  • take him outside, he might want to go outside

  • do you have a family member friend or neighbor that can take him out during the day?
take him out for a long walk before you leave and don't leave him any food or water out till you get home.
can you make a trip home at lunch?

  • try not leaving food down while you are gone. Feed the dog first thing in the morning, wait a half an hour, then walk it or let it out into the yard so it can do it's duty. The dog is trying to tell you something. Maybe you are gone too long. It is using poop as an attention getting devise perhaps. Or you could spend a weekend training the dog to his crate properly.Feed it , take it out play with him, and confine it to the crate. Pretend you are going out, when he starts to bark or whine, come back into the apartment and do not yell, but tell him to be quiet. When he is , give him a very small treat. then leave again. When he barks, throw the door open, say "hi" to him. Sit by him and talk for a minute and leave again. you may have to do this five or six times for him to get the hint that you are coming back and he doesn't have to bark. But he will. When you can stay outside the door for 10 minutes at a time without his barking, you are on the right track. After you spend a couple of hours training him, take him out of the crate, put him directly on his leash and take him outside to do his duty. You might even leave him in the crate while you are at home doing housekeeping. Let him sit in it, not as a punishment, but as a treat. Give him treats while you do things around the house and he is in the crate You should repeat this performance on Sunday, Crate him, leave, come back, praise him, leave, come back, walk him. He should get the message. So by monday, you can leave him for much longer times because he knows you will come back.

  • Oooo myyy LORD!

I FULLY agree with Ty and Hello Sunshine!! You want people who tell it like it is to get it together??! Well I hate to tell you this little MIss, but they're RIGHT.

You taught your dog to eliminate INSIDE. And he's doing exactly what you've taught him to do... it's not his fault you're clueless when it comes to the proper way to housetrain your dog. He's AT the door! What more of a bigger hint can he possibly give you??

There are ways around this, and putting YOUR problem on someone else is NOT the answer.

Don't feed him in the morning, and only feed him 2 hrs. before bedtime. And place those stupid pads everywhere, seeing as that is all he knows. Solved.

  • My chihuahuas are piddlepad trained. The only time they ever "miss" is if I've forgotten to change the piddle pad in a timely manner. They don't want to walk in it anymore than I do.

Have you tried putting a piddlepad by the door where he goes? If so does he go on it? Or pick a new spot. If he goes on it, that's great and can be worked with. If not, he's being spiteful for some reason and you need to figure out why he's unhappy.

Ok, if he is going on the pad by the door. That's great, means he's simply become confused for whatever reason. Leave the pad there for a week or so, changing as necessary, but always putting it back in the same spot. Once he's become accustomed to going on the pad there, you can start moving it. Every 2-3 days, you pick up the icky pad, throw it away, replace with a new one, only you move it about 2-3 feet closer to the old pad. He should follow the pad, pooing on it at will. If he doesn't, put it back, and try again. Be sure to clean any misses thoroughly. If he does follow it, continue slowly moving it towards the old pad, until they are side by side, and you can just put one down.

My female chihuahua, as a pup was determined to potty at the end of the hall, this is how I got her to use the piddlepad in the bathroom that I put down for my male. It took about 2 weeks. Alot less stressful for both of us than other potty training methods I've heard of, and tried before.

Edit: Forgot to mention, his pooing by the door makes me think he's not used to being left alone, and isn't happy about it. If that's the case, it's not a matter of "oops I forgot where to go" but another problem all together. All I can recommend to this, is try and make up the lost time he feels he missed out on while you were gone. When he's happy again, he'll stop this nonsense.

Good luck! And if you have a chihuahua, it's most likely him being pissy, as opposed to him simply having forgotten. I have two, they can be a handful.

  • "when I come home he runs straight to his traveling crate so he knows he does wrong."

Why do people think that a dog cowering or running away when the owner comes home means the dog knows he/she has done something wrong? What it means is that the dog has been conditioned to associated you coming home with a negative consequence and he wants to get away. All that really shows is that the dog is afraid of you.

There are many reasons that the dog may be going on the carpet. In my experience with pee-pads the dog can often start to associate other things on the floor with pee-pads and start urinating/defecating on these things. The simple fact is that it is a lapse in training that has resulted in the situation you have now and this is something you have to correct.

Dog Health Questions: Which would make a better guard dog, Doberman pinscher or Rottweiler?

I AM NOT LOOKING FOR A DOG TO ABUSE NOR AM I THE TYPE OF PERSON THAT WILL JUST THROW A DOG OUTSIDE & EXPECT IT TO BITE ANYONE PASSING BY.

I live on 3 acres, but my house is in the front on one acre. I have plenty of space for a dog to run around, play & be happy. I want a guard dog or mabye 2. I want to buy it as a puppy so that I can raise it & so that I dont buy a dog thats already an adult & might turn out vicious. As soon as it gets old enough to the right age, I'll send it to a Guard Dog Training School. Which should I get????????

A Long Tradition of Dog Training

Recommended Answer:
I have owned both. Go with the pincher. Our rottweilers just like to be scrated and fart alot. the doberman is more alert and barks to alert us , she dosent bite but the intruders dont know that.our front gate has a sign that reads "our dogs can make it from the door to the gate in 3 seconds CAN YOU?"

Dog Training Methods - How to Train Your Dog

  • A dog's basic temperament is set by its genetics, so if a puppy is mentally sound it will not mature into an adult dog that randomly takes a chunk out of someone.

The average pet Dobermann {not purchased from a kennel that specifically breeds their dogs to work....few & far between} would make an excellent visual deterrent & watch dog to bark an alarm, but would not protect its human pack.

You would need an adult professionally trained protection dog .....be prepared to dig deep into your wallet or a puppy bred to work & then assuming the dog passes an evaluation by a professional dog trainer, be prepared to invest fairly heavily to pay for its training.

  • Have you considered getting a "Guardian" breed instead of a "guard" breed? Anatolians, Grt Pyrenees, are just 2 guardian breeds. They are naturals at alerting to intruders (4-legged or 2-legged) they patrol their home turf easily. They are not aggressive but can be quite intimidating just by their size and demeanor. They were mostly bred to live with and guard livestock. But I have found that they adapt to whatever their "herd" is - people, cats, other dogs.
Otherwise, get a well bred German bloodline GSD-- they have the instincts and intelligence left in them to do just about any job you want.

  • Any breed of dog can be trained to be a guard dog - even the smallest. You don't necessarily want a big, fierce, high-strung dog that could attack someone it shouldn't...just think of how much you could lose when the victim of such an attack sues your pants off! Get whichever breed of dog appeals to you and then take it to school - don't send it; go with it - 'cause you need to learn how properly to manage a dog with that special set of skills!

  • I personally love Rottweilers. There very loyal dogs who wont wonder off very far.I have a 2 yr old male he looks scary but hes the most friendliest dog. That's all a person needs is a dog who looks scary that way they will stay out of your yard.Do some research on both breeds,if you can go and meet a rotti pup then a dobi pup.best of luck to you.

  • Neither one of these 2 breeds will do it. Adult dogs that are properly bred and raised do not turn vicious. Look into getting an adult so you know up front what you are buying and be ready to spend several thousand dollars!! Hope I helped!

  • NOT breed specific!
If you're truly this ignorant, you're incapable of proper management.
SANE & trained animals don't...can't..."turn out vicious".

  • Dobermanns don't need guard dog training. In fact, most breeders will tell you to avoid bringing this breed there as it will cause aggressive behaviours that you will not want to deal with.
If you go for a Dobermann, get it from a really good breeder!

Some people say that the "guard dog" instinct has been bred out of the Dobermann and I'm not sure how you can prove if that's fact or fiction. I know my guy is perfect as a personal protection dog (no training) and he's almost 1 year old this month.

Not too sure about Rotties - I've never personally dealt with the breed.

EDIT: Why are so many of you not reading the question properly? lol He said HE DOES NOT WANT THE DOG TO TURN VICIOUS. Not that he does want it to be. So the answers about breeds being bred properly will never turn vicious are irrelevant.

  • "Guard Dog Training School"??? What the hell is that? Billy Bob's Beat'em & Bill ya later Training Kennel?! - Dutchman

LMFAO, oh my spleen! Ahhh man that 1 hurt me! That's exactly what it is.

IF you could find a Doberman capable of the work, you'd spend more for it than an entry level luxury car. If you found a Rottie capable of the work, which would be easier, but difficult for anyone without ties to top importers/an importer him/herself...still expect to pay a good deal of cash. Always best to buy a trained adult and learn how to handle it. Lol Dutch you're too much! Btw I had a Rottie not too long ago from Slovakia, he was a great little working dog! Ugly as sin though, the Slovaks like smaller bully faced Rotties, they pull their weight though.

  • Aphrodite- Your idea of a Personal Protection dog must be very much different than mine.
It would be impossible to have a 1 year old dog without training be a PPD.
A dog that alerts or barks when a stranger is around is not a PPD.

And true PPD training will not make the dog aggressive, quite the opposite in fact.

Whether you can prove the working ability has been bred out of Dobies may be hard to substantiate, but from the many people I have heard from who do this for a living, the consensus is that they are not a preferred breed for that reason. Since this is Greekman's field of expertise, I would listen to his advice.

Dog Health Questions: Dog training problem?!?!?!?

I have two dogs, that are very well behaved I never have any problems with them, they sit, they stay etc. anyway i do however have a problem with them when i take them outside. When we got out side they stick right around the area that i am in and they do just fine until they see an animal or a person and then they take off in a dead run after them. They never bite or attack anything they just are interested in it and want to play with it, but when i yell at them to stop nothing happens. They act like they don't hear me at all, there is nothing i can do to stop them. What can i do?

Dog Training

Recommended Answer:
make you more interesting that they won't want to go investigate.

instead of just walking with them take there favorite toys play with them, play chase ETC. they will then find you more fun and interesting that they won't care who is around.

also take some favorite treats and when you call them and they return praise them so much and give them a treat each. usually when one comes back the other follows

How to Incorporate Dog Training Into Dog Play and Exercise!

  • "Outside" training starts on the leash. You are going too fast and it is DANGEROUS.
Late Entry : thanks for the shitpoits. perhaps you could'd spent that time on research.

  • Practice the "come" command
Do this by positive reinforcement. Take them outside to an area secluded and bring plenty of healthy treats... Let them play, and in the middle of them playing say the dogs name and then come IE "Spot come!" When they do come (((be patient, it will take them awhile, encourage them to come by showing them the treat or saying "treat"))) hand them a treat and praise them like they saved the world. Do this a million more times and eventually they connect "COME" to yummy treat! That way when other dogs or animals approach and they run off yell "SPOT COME" and they will turn around and come get the treat...worked for mine and we have two dogs as well they did the same thing

  • Dog training is done in a small steps. First inside of the house without distractions, then mild distractions then outside. Always on a leash so that you have a control. Get a 20 foot leash, one dog at the time and practice commands, reward the heck out of them when they listen. Dont yell and get mad, they dont listen emotional pack leader, stay calm and assertive.

  • Hi!

Dog Health Questions: Can anyone help me stop my 9 month old dog from chewing everything in the house?

she's a bischon poo. Right now i don't have the money for dog training. She has chewed up all my socks, carpet, paint of the door.....everything. We got her a chew toy and that didn't work. We got her some treats that she had to chew a while. She eats them and goes finds some socks. I also want to know the best way to tell her she is doing something wrong? Any advice would be great....thanks

Dog Training - How to Train Your Dog Successful

Recommended Answer:
Dogs will chew on things usually if they are (1) teething, (2) bored, (3) lonesome, (4) anxious. Bitter apple or Nature's Miracle from PetSmart (or the local pet store) stops most dogs from chewing.

Just say "NO" in a firm voice (not shouting) when you catch her doing something wrong. Approach her and take whatever she's chewing on away from her. NEVER chase or hit her. She'll only be scared of you.

If she has a cage, when you're away from home, put her in it with a toy so she won't be bored. Don't use it to control her if she's misbehaving. She should WANT to go into it on her own.

You might find this website http://101-dog-training-tips.com/Puppy_T… handy for training her.

Good luck! :)

Dog Training Methods Uncovered

  • They sell a product called "NO CHEW" at wal-mart. Very bitter. I had to use it for about 6 months. Spray everything.! It doesn't stain. Give her a small limb to chew. My dogs chewed up a brand new $800. leather recliner when I first started with them. I mean completely chewed.

  • approach 1; use dicipline, keep her out of house etc.

  • tell her NO firmly when she is doin tht.....if tht don't work all the same....we "spank" our dogs cause the word itself didn't work when they didn't kno the meanin....but we didn't do it so hard it hurt and was abuse....we didn't do it 2 soft it was like a pat.....it was just right....then every now and then we still have 2 "spank" them but usually if ur consistant they will learn the meanin of NO.....also get bones.....like tht wht we did w/ ours...and play w/ her enuff where she doesn't have nothin 2 do but chew

  • give her some toys or get her trained

  • well my dog found a toy called the kong interesiing its a toy with a hole in and u fill it with meat and treats they have to knaw and lick it out of toy keeping them and there teeth ocuppied failing that fill a pop bottle with stones quarter full everytime your dog bites or knaws something shake bottle up and down and shout NO i hope this helps you good lick it worked for me!

  • well i have dogs, and they use to chew on everything! i think i found a good method of breaking them from eating stuff up....
i roll up a news paper and wait for the dog to start being bad, and then i lightly tap they' re head w/ the news paper, and say no firmly... you should try this, maybe it will help you out! all yeah, get toys to occupy your mischievous dog....

  • Well naturally puppies do chew things especially even more when they are teething and there is a spray you can buy which prevents dogs chewing on things because thye dislike the taste but if you dont want to buy something just get something bitter and spray it over the things you do not wantt he puppy to chew

  • She needs more exercise. Start by walking her 30 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes in the afternoon. That should help burn off some of the energy. And should reduce te chewing a lot.

Next get a Kong or Buster cube and fill them with some food (Or put some plain peanut butter in the KOng.) and let her munch on those.

You might also keep her crated, if you can't watch her, And for the moment, keep things off the floor. and put bitter apple on things that you can't move - like the carpet and paint.

Healthy, happy dogs will go to sleep if they are bored, but they will chew if they aren't getting enuff exercise. A tired out dog is a good dog.

  • My one beagle did it all the time and one day stopped.

  • hot sauce

  • Exersice, exersice, exercise!

Give her more opportunities for exercise. Taking her for a good long walk a few times a day will help more than you might think.

Touching the back of her neck to get her attention is a good way to let her know she's doing something wrong. You don't have to do it hard enough to hurt, you just want to get her attention away from whatever she's focusing on and get her to be more calm.

  • Give her some old socks to play with and maybe a stuff animal

  • Put away what you don't want her to chew and get several rawhides too big for her to chew up fast, even better are sterile bones made from cow leg and boiled clean. Soak overnight in bullion for flavor. She needs at least a dozen things to chew on and maybe some more exercise. If you could even find the $ to join a class at petsmart it would be worth it.

  • Hey when my dog was a puppy he used to chew everything! So from the pet shop we got him a toy where you stuff treats in it and it takes him foreva to get them out. He still has it now and he loves it so i'll hope that will be helpful. Cheers

  • She needs good toys to play with. But she is a puppy. And they chew things.

  • any dogs usually around 2-11 months start teething at this age.
its normal. but she needs to know it is wrong. give her a swat in the nose tell her no, then put her out side for a while. keep doing this over and over.

also... if you only tried out one chew toy, you might want to try some others.
like squeaky toys or rope toys. dogs can be picky with toys

  • Why Don't you try a Kong. You can fill them up with any thing and freeze it. Your dog will basically never detatch his face from the kong because he will be so focused on getting every thing out of it.

Dog Health Questions: What type of certification would you recommend for an owner of a doggy daycare?

I've been thinking about opening my own doggy daycare (out of my house) when I get the resources. I don't plan on being a dog trainer specifically, but I wouldn't mind working with some dogs for an extra charge.

Would you recommend that I become a certified dog trainer?

OR

take more of a home schooling approach with "Sit Stay Fetch" or "Dog Training Masters" and learn on my own?

The Basic Commands For Dog Training

Recommended Answer:
There are certifications you can get with different organizations, that can demonstrate to potential clients that you're educated on dog care & welfare, health, first aid etc.

Here's some links:
http://www.petcareservices.org/

http://www.petsitters.org/

Both offer courses that you can take at home. It's also best if you have real-life experience at a dog daycare, kennel, veterinarian's office, working for a pet-sitting organization, etc. Work for at least a year or two so that you can provide references, and have hands-on training. You'll also have to look into the laws & zoning requirements in your town for setting this up in your own home.

Dog Training Methods - How to Train Your Dog

  • I highly recommend being a certified dog trainer. You can use the vidoes as a supplement, but hands on personal training is best.

You'll probably also need a business license and specific insurance.

In addition, you should have recent pet 'emergency aid' classes under your belt.

You'll also need to check the CC&R's and laws for your neighborhood/city. I know that in my neighborhood, we are not permitted to run an active business out of our homes.

You should also hire a lawyer to draft up documents that prevent you from being sued if a dog gets sick/hurt in your home. These releases, along with care forms, are virtually mandatory to cover yourself legally.

Dog Health Questions: Small dog training help?!?!?!?

i have a chihuahua mini-pin mix, her name is Lily. she is almost 7 months old, i've had her for five months. she is very agressive to other dogs if they are much bigger than her. i just moved to NY and my brother has a pitbull. The pitbull is very sweet but Lily often attacks her. I'm worried that the pitbull might get fed up and hurt my dog. Also, Lily occansionlly bites people. How can I stop this agressive behavior? I tell her no and give Lily a smack on the butt when she gets agressive, but that just makes her more angry and she bites more. How can I show her that the pitbull is not a threat and get her to stop bitting me/the pitbull?
thanks.

Dog Training - How to Housebreak an Adopted Dog

Recommended Answer:
It's best not to have her close enough to the pitbull that she can actually bite. The pitbull sounds like he/she has a wonderful temperment but even the best behaved dog can be pushed to it's limits if another dog repeatedly tries to bite it. Even a small nip from the pitbull intended just to be a warning could result in serious injury for a small dog like a chihuahua. It can be quite challenging to teach very small dogs that they don't need to be overly aggressive to compensate for their small size. When it comes down to it, your chihuahua is not showing confidence and it does not believe it can take on a large dog- it is fearful and that is why it lashes out. Smacking the dog is not the way to teach it. It wont work to teach a small dog not to be aggressive by being aggressive towards it. First off, if it is biting you it does not respect you as a leader and protector. Try doing things to teach the dog you are the boss. Like always go through doors before your dog, put a leash on the dog and step on it towards the dog's neck gently so the dog is forced to lay down, this puts the dog in a submissive spot- do it repeatedly throughout the day and the dog will learn nothing bad will happen and eventually wont struggle at all. Make the dog sit before you feed her. Etc Etc you get the idea. Have her on leash when she meets the pitbull but don't leash the pitbull. If Lily lashes out simply say no and give a sharp tug on the leash. Do not touch her or say anything else to her. You may also want to have a safe place for her to go to like a small crate. Don't let other dogs around the crate and don't bother her when she is in it. It is her haven and she needs to feel that she has a place to go if she needs to get out of a situation rather than being aggressive. I know it all sounds easy but in real life getting rid of aggressive behaviour is very challenging. But once she learns to respect you as a leader things will improve. Don't think you are being mean either because dogs crave a leader and need to know their role in the"pack". You will have a happier, nicer dog if you show your authority but you don't need to do it in an aggressive manner. Hope that helps a bit. If all else fails consider a personal dog trainer that specializes in fixing aggressive behaviour.

Pick the Best Dog Training Collar to Train Your Big Dog to Walk

  • I have a one year old Yorkie Poo who weighs about three pounds and she went through the same thing when she was a puppy. It's small dog syndrome (not a technical name) the vet explained that my dog was over aggressive to try to prove dominance.. kind of like a survival tactic. In my case my dog grew out of it... she now plays with other, always much bigger dogs all the time. The best thing to do would be to keep a close eye on her and watch the dogs she's around. Once she feels safe this behavoir should stop.

Dog Health Questions: Dog training for kids! please help me!?

i am in the sixth grade and i have about 7 dogs.2 of them are mine. i am trying to train 1 of them to walk on a leash and the other one to sit, come, lay down. you know, the basics. anyway the first dog Bear is not leash trained. i have been trying to get him leash trained but i have had some trouble. the other Andy is leash trained and i just recently trained him to sit. but i still need to teach both dogs the basics. so please help me! BUT KEEP IN MIND I AM ONLY A KID IN THE SIXTH GRADE! I WILL NOT UNDERSTAND YOUR ANSWER IF YOU SAY STUFF THAT ONLY SOME ADULT WOULD UNDERSTAND!

Dog Training Tools and Advice

Recommended Answer:
You appear to be doing pretty good.

I suggest you go to the library and get the librarian to help you find a book on dog training you can understand. One with illustrations would be good.
THAT would be a better source of information than you are likely to find here.

Dog Training Schools - Who is Being Trained, You Or the Dog

  • I hope you are big enough to control the dogs. I like to start with teaching my dogs to sit. I also use treats when I train.

For sit, I do two things. I say, "Sit," and at the same time I point to the floor. I have found that some dogs are better with hand signals than with voice commands. If the dog does not respond appropriately, I hold the collar to keep the head where I want it and push down on the rear at the same time. If the dog holds the position, I give a treat. After I know the dog understands, I only give the treat if the dog sits when told without my making him. The dog must be made to obey every time so that the dog knows that it is a command and not a choice.

For down, I start the dog in a sitting position. I will then say, "Down," and move my flat hand toward the ground as if I am pushing a flat object down. If the dog does not respond appropriately, I put a hand on the rear to keep the dogs rear down and hold a treat in front of the nose. As the dog notices the treat, I move the treat down toward the floor and out a small distance from the dog. The dog's nose will usually follow the treat. In an effort to follow/get the treat the dog will lie down (if you manage to keep the rear from coming up). I will then congratulate the dog and give him the treat.

If you use regular dog treats, you should break them up into small pieces. Dogs do not need those giant treats. I use dry cat food as treats. My dog loves it, I already have it since I have cats, and it comes in small pieces already. It is easy to put in a small plastic snack or sandwich bag and to carry in my pocket.

Another thing that my dogs learn is a certain noise I make that means, "Stop, your behavior is unacceptable." I sort of make a quick growly, "Ah." You can use whatever is quick and natural. I use this any time my dog is misbehaving and I am going to stop the behavior. Do not use it you are not going to stop the dog, or the dog will either never learn the meaning of the sound or will find out that you can be ignored.

I do not know exactly what difficulties you are having with the leash training. There are different techniques to use for different problems. I find that the first thing with a leash is to let the dog find out that the leash is not something to fear. The leash can be put on and then the dog followed or some training practice can occur. If the dog is pulling, you can use the sound that lets the dog know it is misbehaving, or tell it to sit every time. There are also special collars that can help with big dogs.

I have also found that dogs do best when they are trained daily. If you go through a certain routine or do the training at the same time each day, the dog will learn to look and listen for commands and will try to learn. The training sessions should not be too long either. Since you are young, you probably won't want to train for too long either. The dogs retention span should determine the length of the training time. It may be good to start with 15 to 20 minutes of training and then to reward the dog with about 10 minutes of playing.

Dog Health Questions: Dog Training Galore!?

1. How does one become a renown dog trainer?

From my understanding there are no recognized programs that teach training...its more or less having a mentor and training dogs for years and YEARS and YEARS

Sorry to all you 20 something dog "experts"...but ,,,,eh NO

2. How does one become a dog "behaviorist" and who came up with that "title"? WTH is a dog "behaviorist"? Dog trainers KNOW the behavior of dogs...end of discussion.

3. WTF does training dolphins, primates and chickens have to do with dogs?
I've been told by several people here that "oooooh, my trainer has a phd in animal training"...uhuh! There is no bachelor / master/ doctorate program for the behavior of DOGs..NONE. PS. To all you little trolls....how long will it take you to delete this question? Do you take weekends off? or are you still busy on Sudays?

Dog Training - Important Tips

Recommended Answer:
1) You are correct.

2) A bunch of crap. Sorry. I have met 2 so called *behaviorists* when I was fostering. ~Talking to my rescue organization coordinator~

*Sandy, Ralph is dog aggressive*

*Glen, we had him checked*

*Sandy, Ralph is dog aggressive*

*Bring him to Petco tomorrow. The *behaviorist* will make that decision*

Fast forward to Petco:

*Hi, Susy. I am glen. Ralph is dog aggressive*

*I checked him out. He is not dog aggressive. How do you know that?*

*He attacked 4 of my dogs*

*Your dogs started it*

*No. Everyone was introduced properly. He went after the fist 4 and I wasn't gonna let him go after any more of my dogs*

*glen, dear.......it takes time for adjustment*

*I know, Susy dear. But these were full blown 'I am gonna to beat the crap out of you' attacks*
*Ralph cannot be in a multi dog household*

*You have a muzzle on him. Has he had this on the whole time at your house?*

*No, he has been kenneled at my vet. I can't have him in my house. He would be dead*

Fast forward to the behaviorist taking the muzzle off Ralph and walking him through Petco where he goes after a customer's GS and before I could get him away from the GS he turns around and goes after me then he proceeds to go after the behaviorist at which time I had to pull him up off the floor via his leash and collar while trying to get the muzzle back on.

The behaviorist was in shock. I was pissed. Ralph went home with another foster person. I wished her much luck.

3) I have never seen a trained chicken but I have a bird who will tell you to F~OFF if you get too close to her cage.

Things to Consider Before You Go For a Dog Training Career

  • I agree with Rotten Rotts...Experience is the only teacher...Going to all kinds of seminars with already well known trainers helps. You can pick and choose from what you have learned as to what is appropriate with your style.
I have been to many different trainers with all 5 of my dogs...Some like "clicker training", some believe in only positive reinforcement, some believe in positive reinforcement with some correction and still others believe in "discipline and correction" only....
It depends on you....what do you believe?
And no - trolls do NOT take Sundays off!!!

  • Have owned and trained dogs for 44yrs now..
I come with a letterhead stating I am a renowned dog trainer and Magnets for your fridge..
Before that I use to bring home strays and hide them in my parents basement..My training was so good when I was 8yrs old that they were taught not to bark so my mom did'nt realize there was a zoo downstairs:)))

  • I have trained dawgs for dang near 30 years and I am a legend in my own mind.

Seriously no title needed it is all experienceyou can train a chicken?????

  • I don't know about "re known", but, you become a dog trainer because its something you really enjoy and you "feel" a calling for. You do it by working for or with someone that has done it for a long time and whose skills and experience you respect. You become a dog trainer after you have trained a few hundred dogs and that precludes anyone in their 20's...simply not enough time there.
You become a better dog trainer by experimenting with different methods until you find something that works for your type of training and not change your mind when the latest fad comes around.
Only experience is able to teach you that.

As far as the second part, again, I have no idea, never called myself that, never wanted to, I am a trainer, not a behaviorist, but, in order to train, I must FIRST recognize a behavior in order to effect a change in it...
I have never trained a chicken or a monkey, could not tell you about how to do it, I will leave that to those with the experience in that field, however, I also would like to have them leave the dog training world alone to those with the experience in it as well.
How things appear in a lab environment is a VERY different story then how they are in the REAL world. Hope I helped.

Dog Health Questions: Dog training and leashes?

so how far does the animal exploitation thing go, as far as vegan do's and don'ts? I have a dog, rescued from an animal shelter 6 years ago. He's great with the family but bites strangers and other dogs. When I take him out he wears a leash and is only let off when there's no one around for him to bite. I tell him what to do i.e. come here, sit, stay, etc. He seems really happy to me. I wonder what the general opinion is on the leash and the training? I'm asking since the opinions I got on horse riding being exploitation, which fair enough, it is; although I don't think every horse involved is terribly miserable for it. But what about the dog, does vegan values say I should let him run riot biting people and peeing in the house? I'm wondering where the line is drawn, the 'me guy' seems to think it's a clear, bold line, but maybe it's more fuzzy. While people continue to support the animal trade the abandoned ones will still have to be trained in their new homes.

Dog Training Supplies - Dog Collars

Recommended Answer:
The best answer I've heard by an animal rights author was that dogs have similar brain development to a toddler. You wouldn't open the front door and let a toddler wonder out on their own, unsupervised, that would be neglect. The same goes for dogs and cats. They need to be supervised. My dog wearing a leash when we're out on the street is just like holding the hand of a small child. Same goes for training, you teach ("train") kids to behave appropriately, and that is beneficial to them. Same goes for training your dog. Also, my own opinion is that if your dog bites, you better keep him on a leash. If he bit someone and they sued or filed a complaint, the dog will be put down- and I think he will definitely be happier to be on a leash and alive! Good luck and kudos on adopting and being patient with a shelter dog.

Dog Training Leash - A Basic Method You Need To Have

  • DOG WHISPERER

  • I would never own a pet, let alone a carnivore.

most vegans and vegetarians i know are of the same opinion.

  • I don't have a problem with people owning dogs or cats but I do have a problem with people treating them like pets instead of the animals they are. It makes me sick when I see toy breeds in purses or wearing clothes instead of walking around sniffing their surroundings or socializing with other dogs like they should be doing. Or when people get dogs and leave them outside with no socialization what so ever. Dogs live in packs and each pack has a leader. Your job is to establish the rules and make the dog follow. This can be done mostly with induceive training however some compulsion training is required. Pack leaders will often bite at disobedient dogs or pin them to the ground to establish dominance. This is not to be mistaken with abuse. Abuse is entirely different and involves pain not social correction. With my dog I always have him on a leash but the leash has plenty of slack and I never allow him to pull. This way he feels like he can walk freely but is never allowed to walk in front of me. I use a nylon leash with a collar an during our intermediate stages I used a simple choke chain but only used it about three times. As far as pinch collars and shock collars these are unnecessary and cruel. Anyone resulting to the use of these tools has no reason to be training dogs.

As for the biting, dogs will bite for three reasons; fear- fight or flight takes place, prey- they become excited and enjoy the thrill of the chase, and civil- the dog is trained to bite without the use of equipment. In most cases dogs bite out of fear. Most bites on children are due to prey drive stimulation when children run around dogs. You need to establish a positive socialization atmospher for your dog so that he feels comfortable and secure around people. At the same time you need to let him know it's not acceptable by correcting him.

  • i wanted my dog to have total freedom, when i first got him, then he started being a pest and no-one liked him and they used to treat him badly when i wasnt around, so i started some basic training! now he is a much happier dog, and has since been registed as a Seizure Alert Dog, and has saved my life on numerous occasions, and has won awards as best trained dog, and dog of the year! i would never have an un-trained dog again

  • Veganism is about reducing suffering.

How does letting a dog train itself into a dangerous animal reduce suffering? It's bad for the dog and everyone around it.

Would a vegan person let an anaconda go around eating people's babies? It's stupid to even ask ridiculous questions like this.

I will tell you one thing, if someone "buys" a dog from a breeder, pet store or from anywhere else as opposed to adopting from a shelter, they ARE NOT vegan.

Dog Health Questions: How much is a clicker (for dog training) in the Phlipinnes?

Hunting Dog Supplies Can Help Ensure Proper Dog Training and a Successful Hunt

Recommended Answer:
Hmm... I don't know. You can get one on eBay, Amazon, and ect. You could also look for one on a trip or vacation because they sell them almost EVERYWHERE. Then you could send it to the Philippines. I really don't think they cost that much. About $2.50. Here is a website all about clickers, also a clicker shopping one.

http://www.clickercompany.com/?source=google&gclid=CJT6tcjIuKMCFRGVzAodgSjQag

They really don't cost that much.

Hope I helped.

:)

Abused Dog Training - How to Train an Abused Dog

  • I don't know - but you could buy one anywhere in the world and send it to the Philipinnes for just a few pounds / dollars.

OR.... you can do it really cheaply and make the same sound with your mouth which the dogs respond to the same.

Try ebay if you have it in the philipinnes - or google it and find out.

  • It shouldn't cost very much at all. In the US, it's between 99 cents to 3.99 USD for a clicker, depending on if you get a cheaply made one, or a fancy one.

You could also replicate the sound by snapping your fingers.

  • Aggression training is only effective if the trainer can see what precipitates the aggression and how your body language relates to its onset. Find a local training school that can take you and your dog as private students. The Evolution of Dog Training

      Recommended Answer:
      Crate Training!

Morning- let out of crate to go straight out to potty.
If he doesn't potty, put him back in for 10 minutes max and then let him straight back out.
Once he goes, feed him breakfast and put him back in his crate.
1 hour later let him straight out to potty.
Nothing, back in for 10 minutes.
Afterwards he can come into the house for play time.
Every hour during playtime, let him out where he is to potty.
Max playtime-3hrs or 1hr long walk
Right before going back into the crate, potty time.
      Let him sleep.
      Wake up- out to potty.
Nothing, back in for 10 minutes.
Come back in to eat lunch.
Wait 1 hr, then out to potty.
      Nothing, comes in for 10.
      Playtime/ long walk.
Potty walk every hour during play.
      Back in for dinner.
Take away water for the night after eating.
Wait 1 hr, then out to potty.
A bit more play time before bed.
Last time out to potty should be as late as possible.

It is a lot, but trust me it will be worth it.

Dog Training - A Fun Activity

      • If you don't have a yard to go in then you should walk him every 30 minutes or so just until you get his schedule down. After he has a schedule you probably will only have to take him out a few times a day. Just remember that every dog should have at least 45 minutes of good exercise a day! Keep it up.
